Developing: NPR CEO ‘Forced Out’ Amid Undercover Video Scandal

Heads are rolling at NPR.
The publicly-funded news outlet just announced that its CEO, Vivian Schiller, has resigned. However, as news trickles out it appears more that she was ousted.
The moves comes amid an undercover video scandal yesterday that showed Senior Vice President for Development, Ron Schiller (no relation), criticizing the Tea Party as “racist.” Ron announced his own resignation yesterday.
However, NPR reporter David Folkenflik says Vivian did not as much resign as she was “forced out.” He offers more information in a corresponding tweet:
The full statement released by NPR Board of Directors Chairman Dave Edwards is understandably vague, mentioning nothing of the week’s controversy:
“It is with deep regret that I tell you that the NPR Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of Vivian Schiller as President and CEO of NPR, effective immediately.
“The Board accepted her resignation with understanding, genuine regret, and great respect for her leadership of NPR these past two years.
“Vivian brought vision and energy to this organization. She led NPR back from the enormous economic challenges of the previous two years. She was passionately committed to NPR’s mission, and to stations and NPR working collaboratively as a local-national news network.
“According to a CEO succession plan adopted by the Board in 2009, Joyce Slocum, SVP of Legal Affairs and General Counsel, has been appointed to the position of Interim CEO. The Board will immediately establish an Executive Transition Committee that will develop a timeframe and process for the recruitment and selection of new leadership.
“I recognize the magnitude of this news – and that it comes on top of what has been a traumatic period for NPR and the larger public radio community. The Board is committed to supporting NPR through this interim period and has confidence in NPR’s leadership team.”
Still, in updates posted by NPR blogger Mark Memmott, it‘s clear that Vivian’s departure was not a unilateral decision.
“The board had a wide-ranging conversation with Vivian last night,“ about recent events and ”how the organization needed to move forward,” Memmott quotes Edwards as saying. “The events that took place [particularly Ron Schiller's statements and Juan Williams' dismissal] became such a distraction to the organization that in the board‘s mind it hindered Vivian Schiller’s abilty to lead the organization going forward.”
Memmott again quoting Edwards says Vivian told the board members that they should have “the flexibility to do what [they] felt was important.“ She ”offered to step aside if that was the board’s will,” he said, “and the board ultimately decided that was in the best interest of the organization.”
Yesterday’s video was not the first time Vivian came under fire for her leadership. She was heavily criticized for the way she oversaw the firing of former NPR reporter Juan Williams last fall. In January — after an internal investigation — NPR‘s board withheld Vivian’s bonus as a result of the scandal.
“The Board has expressed confidence in Vivian Schiller’s leadership going forward,” the board said at the time. “She accepted responsibility as CEO and cooperated fully with the review process. The Board, however, expressed concern over her role in the termination process and has voted that she will not receive a 2010 bonus.”
The executive who directly fired Williams resigned at the time. Now, it seems, it was Vivian’s turn.
Vivian joined NPR in January 2009, and before that was senior vice president and general manager of NYTimes.com. She has also worked at Discovery Times Channel and CNN Productions.
Ron Schiller was initially set to take a job working with the Aspen Institute in Colorado. A spokesman for that organization, however, informed Yahoo’s The Cutline that that will no longer happen:
“Ron Schiller has informed us that, in light of the controversy surrounding his recent statements, he does not feel that it’s in the best interests of the Aspen Institute for him to come work here,” the spokesman said in a statement to The Cutline.
Additionally, Ron’s partner seen in the video, Betsy Liley, has been placed on administrative leave.
The controversy comes at a horrible time for NPR: this week, Capitol Hill politicians are discussing whether or not to defund the outlet and yesterday some anti-NPR politicians ramped up their rhetoric.
This is a breaking story. Updates will be added.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 10:10amNPR has been slanted, bias since it’s inception, and should never have been funded with taxpayer $$. Now that proof has come to light (man I love truth no matter which side gets it shined on) on their left leaning ways the heads are rolling. Not only that but they admit that they don’t need the federal funds.
What is the holdup regarding defunding them NOW? Why have announcements not been made already. And why in the world would Constitutional, fiscally responsible house members or committee members not pronoun that they are going to look into other left leaning (possibly even right leaning if they exist), public $$ supported organizations and institutions, as possible defunding targets.
We need to stop spending and save $$ NOW.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 12:15pmHey lloyd cuts have to start somewhere logic would dictate you cut all UNNECESSARY programs first. NPR,PBS, and the national endowment for the arts. Then you move on to useless and over reaching government agencies THAT NEED TO BE REMOVED OR AT LEAST REIGNED IN FINANCIALLY AND BUREAUCRATICLY FCC,EPA,DOE,FDA,DOE,and at least two of the 5 major federal law agencies I personally would say the AFT,AND NSA. And yes social security and medicare needs cuts as well and those cuts should start with the people who pay nothing into them and are collecting it. More over there should also be an income limit on who can collect it. If some is getting 100,000 dollars a year from a retirement fund they should get a Social Security check.
Report Post »And then theres the most Unconstitutional agency in Washington the IRS needs to have it progressive income tax division total abolished and replace with a simple VAT on purchases.
Point is that doing nothing is only making the problem worst. If a doctor said you had cancer would that was treatable would you put off your treatment as the cancer worsen or would you start treatment ASAP.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 3:46pm$14,000,000,000,000–yes, a huge number, had to check twice to make sure I had the right number of zeros!
FIRST, cut where the spending is spreading most cancerously: Medicare. NEXT cut where the biggest amount of waste is (not the biggest proportion, the biggest absolute amount) and that is defense. THEN Social Security where the retirement age should be raised, and the income cap on premiums should be lifted. FINALLY, minor cosmetic items like NPR. Otherwise, I have to conclude that you are not serious about reducing deficits and reining in the national debt.

I have thought of it, the main sight where my gallery is located, which is artinphoenix.com has only so much space for each artist; unlike other sights for blogs in general, there is a part for local artists in phoenix to tell what there gallery is about, and it has limits as well.
I will send a e-mail to the people who maintain it suggesting room for a small biography though, that indeed is a excellent suggestion.
I will try to post more of my earlier works over the next few weeks so everyone can see just how my art looked in the beginning, with my cat girls…you will probably enjoy the laugh at the way they looked then.

Did you ever really think that the Brass at NPR could be anything but blatantly progressive, smug, overbearing, and extremely liberal?
It reminds me of Bill Clinton and his lack of respect for authority when facing a grand jury.
“Clinton‘s rationalization to the grand jury about why he wasn’t lying when he said to his top aides that with respect to Monica Lewinsky, “there’s nothing going on between us.” How can this be?
Clinton’s Answer
“It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is. If the–if he–if ‘is’ means is and never has been, that is not–that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement….Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true.”

Wasn’t this the witch that “fired” juan? I am so glad to see another one gone. Maybe they won’t need the “funding” after all. They are not going to have any employees left to pay. Yeah!!!!

Hi, SissyKatz!
Yes, she’s the one who fired Juan. (Fox News, DO NOT HIRE her!)
I’m wondering what Juan is thinking about this . At least Vivian Shiller knows how it feels to have the same thing done to her that she did to Juan. (Gotta love karma!)

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 2:04pmNote to Harvard Hicks, Yale YaZoo’s, and any other university elite handicapped individuals: While you and your fellow students/professors have glorified yourselves in your insulated fake-world castles of hypothetical knowledge, the rest of us… and most people in general (those without ego problems) have been getting an ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION in the real world; that would be the world of learning to be useful citizens and generally nice people. You know… “folks” (got-cha!).
This message comes to you from an Engineer with a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, and I’ve seen how you university guys all get so full of yourselves and lost in yourselves first hand, having spent 13 years in university research myself. Don’t assume that your degree makes you any better than those with real-life educations in the real world. In fact, in ways that matter YOUR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IS A SERIOUS HANDICAP UNLESS YOU REMEMBER TO BECOME HUMBLE. This takes extra effort. I suggest you make the effort.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 3:19pmGeorge Soros will probably find another place for these people to work. I love these undercover videos. I think O’Keefe is a true patriot. O’Keefe is willing to put his own life on the line to show the world how sleezy these organizations really are. I think he is a hero for exposing these organizations that get money from taxpayers. I hope more will be brave to do what O’Keefe is doing. If NPR is such an important news organization, they will be able to stay on the air by getting money through private donations and advertising. It doesn’t feel right that the government would subsidize the news.

Posted on March 9, 2011 at 6:07pmDoes anyone not see the real reason why she resigned?
I bet you 10 – 1 that it’s due to the fact that she was also caught on a future video. Normally when these videos pop up there are more than one that are released over a period of time. The ones who created the video even made their own website which costs time and money so obviously a lot more videos were done on NPR before hand and Vivian here was probably in one and she knows it.

I’ve always preferred news-format radio to music stations, so 30 years ago (early 1980′s), in the dark days before Rush Limbaugh, I tried listening to NPR – because their commercial-free format promised to waste less of my listening time. They actually do have their own forms of ‘commercial’ messages but it’s subtler and briefer.
After a year or two I realized I was spending at least 30 minutes/hour listening to yet more stories about AIDS, gays & lesbians, and the communist Sandinistas in Nicaragua – all for the sake of avoiding 20 minutes/hour of commercials. Their progressive agenda was so ’round the clock’ constant; I began to wonder if the only way I could avoid getting AIDS was to send money to support gay communists. So, I returned to commercial-format radio stations and haven’t missed NPR since.
Thank God that Rush Limbaugh came along in the late 1980′s to make sitting through all the commercials worthwhile because he at least had something to say worth waiting for.
As someone who strives to be fair and balanced, I can honestly say I gave NPR a fair shot at gaining me as a listener, and had they been more balanced in their programming, I’d be sending them money to keep them on the air, but they were so clearly in the tank for the progressive agenda that they must be weaned from the taxpayer’s teat and required to stand or fall on their own. That doesn’t make me a homophobic, gun-toting, anti-science, ignorant Christian zealot as NPR obviously thinks, – it just means I want to be presented with balanced reporting of the news. Just give me the facts and I’ll make up my own mind.
If NPR’s Progressive format cannot survive without taxpayer support then so be it… Good riddance to a bunch of crybaby elitist snobs.

Report Post »Since a “shill” is a pretender or a decoy used to dishonestly get others to participate in something, I’m going to add both these NPR “SCHILLERS” to my list of people whose last names also defined their careers – like baseball pro Cecil FIELDER and former White House spokesperson Larry SPEAKES.
