Suspicious Package Found Outside Giffords’ Tucson Office

UPDATE:

A loud noise rattled more than 100 people gathered for a candlelight vigil outside the Tucson headquarters of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Saturday night, where bomb squad officials were investigating a suspicious package.

A bomb squad had been working to render the device safe before the loud noise was heard and it‘s unclear at this point whether the loud noise was caused by contents within the package or from authorities’ efforts to destroy the device.  Police authorities say there was no threat to public safety.

People holding vigil outside the local Tucson office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords have reportedly been pushed back and the bomb squad is being deployed to investigate a suspicious package.

The AP reports:

Authorities were investigating a suspicious package sent to the headquarters of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday, hours after she was wounded in a shooting rampage in Tucson.

Police department spokesman Lt. Fabian Pacheco said an officer checking Giffords’ office in Tucson found “a real strange” device that he described as a medal (sic) container resembling a coffee can and with writing on it. Pacheco would not disclose what the writing said.

He said authorities warned people at a candle light vigil across the street from Gifford’s office that they may hear loud noise as a bomb squad worked to render the device safe, but they should not be alarmed.

Pacheco said there was no threat to public safety.

“It’s been a horrible and tragic day,” he said. “The prudent thing for us is to take everything seriously.”

Giffords was holding a forum for constituents earlier Saturday when the violence erupted, killing six and wounding several others, including Giffords.

At the candle light vigil held, more than 100 people huddled in the cold, held candles and read signs that said “Peace,“ and ”Just Pray.”

“She’s just a great person,” said Margaret Robles, 64, a retired teacher‘s aid who knew Gifford’s grandparents. “She didn’t care what color, what race, if you could read or if you were a scholar. She treated you as an equal.”

True Blaze supporters need to be reminded that these acttacks are ment to show us as tightly wound loons. I‘ve been a long time reader just now respondin because i’m sick of the venum on both sides. Lets morn the Dead and pray for the wounded. forget the blame , credit some true heros for stopping what could have been worse. Lets put some effort into getting AG Holde off his A$$ and prosicute some of these treasonous peoole and groups.. And that for both sides. Palin, Beck, Rush and even those crazies on MSNBC have rights to their opnions but those like Van Jones calling for violence and revolution need to be held accoutable.

    I’ve seen Rep. Giffords interviewed a few times on Fox, on immigration issues primarily. She sounded like a fair and reasonable person. I could see the person Margaret Robles describes. I’m so sorry, for her family, and her friends, and I pray for her full recovery.

    I’ll be praying for those whose loved ones were killed and wounded as well. Such a useless, obscene act of violence.

    The suspicious packages appearing around the country have not exploded. They seems to be all fluff as no one has been hurt. Some people might think they are designed to implicate someone other than the real perpetrators. The fact that they, so far, are not lethal. A real bomb-maker would try to achieve explosions, not fizzle. A real bomb-maker might feel embarrassed that his work is shoddy, unless…NAH, I’m probably wrong.

      I don’t want to cause undue alarm, but this afternoon, the Knoxville News Sentinental (Tn.) reported that a 22 yr old schmuck was pulled off a flight in Nashville headed to Las Vegas. His luggage contained knives, guns and inert grenades. Can‘t say they’re related, but it’s suspicious that another 22 yr old screwball was busted today who was headed in that direction.

      @sledgehammer, sorry to jump to conclusions, but I got a weird feeling about it. Something is coming. Only time will tell, but these bombings of federal buildings, another possible attempted bombing, the attempted murder of a congresswoman and the murder of a federal judge. It can’t be just coincidence, especially given the timing of all of it. Frances Fox Piven and far leftists calling for violent revolution and all this happens, within a few days of each other. I just want people to pray for this country. And be on your guard
