Did America Overreact to 9/11? (At Least One MSNBC Host Thinks So)

Did you know that America ‘overreacted’ to 9/11?
Another day, another ‘spit take’ caused by MSNBC.
Lawrence O‘Donnell’s nightly show on the cable channel features an opinion segment called ‘Rewrite.’ Tuesday‘s ’Rewrite’ was also an attempt to rewrite history.
Like many folks on both sides of the aisle, Mr. O‘Donnell wants to find a way to associate the ’good news‘ part of Bin Laden’s death with his political party of choice while also managing to lay blame for any bad elements of this event on the opposition. Supporters of GITMO and the enhanced interrogation techniques like waterboarding are proudly stating, we would still be looking for OBL were it not for these tools of war. CIA Chief Leon Panetta admitted that information from Waterboarding helped in locating bin Laden.
Last Word’ Larry disagrees and also wants us all to know that America overreacted to 9/11. See it and hear it with your own ears.
You have to wonder how the families of those who lost husbands and wives, children, brothers and sisters, lovers, etc. will feel when they hear that America ‘overreacted’ to the violent murder of their family members?
The comment about overreacting was not the main focus of this piece, that was merely a political aside. ‘Rewrite’ from Tuesday night had a bigger lesson in mind, that lesson;
If only we had elected John Kerry and not George W. Bush.
Quoting Lawrence O’Donnell;
Everything John Kerry said was right. Everything. And some of it was even a bit visionary. The part about quote, engagement in the Middle East economically, socially, culturally in a way that we haven’t embraced. That carries more than a hint of seeing the possibility of the arab spring uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Syria that we are now so desperately trying to find a way to engage and embrace. As a President, Kerry would have had us begin doing six years ago.
Is this a classic case of ‘woulda-shoulda-coulda?’
Does Lawrence O’Donnell actually believe that back in 2004, John Kerry envisioned the current wave of revolution sweeping the Middle East? Or that Kerry would not have authorized additional troops requested by generals, because that would be an overreaction?
And finally, one has to wonder if O’Donnell realizes the fact that his wistful election of John Kerry to the Presidency in 2004, probably would have prevented an Obama victory in 2008.
(Statistical sidebar that relates to America‘s ’overreaction’: In just two years and four months of the Obama Presidency, we have lost over 920 American lives fighting in Afghanistan. During the seven plus years of the Bush administration, American casualties numbered just under 650. No death of an American soldier is to be politicized or trivialized. We honor their sacrifice and send our condolences to their families. These numbers are here for factual support only.)

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 8:25amIt’s a watse of time defending Bush. Bush is irrelevant. And frankly, the more distance I get from him the more I can see the annoying arrogance others complained about. But that was yesterday. We don’t need to defend him anymore. What we should defend is the tactics he used that resulted in Osama’s capture. We should be focussed on the state of the Islamic threat NOW and how much it still exists.
It is clear that liberals like Larry want to believe the hype about the “Arab Spring” and ignore the factor of the Muslim Brotherhood, the fundamentalist turn of Turkey, the loss of Egypt as a peace partner. Killing Bin Laden was a huge psychological coup. It has massive symbolic value. But the Jihadist world can fuel itself with that value almost as easily as be deflated by it. The war is far from over. Defending Bush’s honor will only be a distraction from the real battle ahead.

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 8:22amO’Donnell is simply in the reelect-Obama campaign mode. The MSM was so in the back pocket of the Dems who, for years, assailed Bush at every turn. Bush is now vindicated, to some degree at least, by his decisions that eventually got bin Laden. Every one of those choices was lambasted by the Left on an almost-hourly basis–up to and including Reid declaring the war is lost– but Obow needed all those assets to get our enemy.
If Larry O wants to politicize 9/11, let him. He’s only making the MSM and other libs look more hypocritical than before.

We claim to be a Christian country and acted just like the Middle East when one of our own is killed. Scripture is not there to follow just when you agree with it. I am ashamed that I took got caught up in all of this and I am grateful my pastor quickly put my feet back on the ground by asking me, “I wonder if God’s justice is the same as ours…”. He is right as usual. I was also very disappointed to see Bill out right disrespect his priest. Not to mention Bill was completely wrong ( on several issues) quoting, “Give onto Cesar what is Cesar’s”, that scripture is referring to money and money only.To add to that scripture, “obey the President” is called assegais. He added an idea to scripture that was not there in print. The point is would Jesus have celebrated his enemies death in such a way?? No! Jesus said, “I tell you, love your enemy!” I will be praying for Bill to set his ego aside and let God be the judge of OBL not us.

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 9:02amWith all due respect, the priest was wrong….but O‘Reilly wasn’t correct in defending it by quoting the verse about Caesar. The command to “do not kill” is correctly interpreted “murder”,….not just “kill” as all Jews know. It was acceptable to God and even commanded to have them kill certain enemies in “just” wars and that did not change with the coming of Jesus. It’s a command not to kill someone that is “innocent”. Yes, you “love” your enemies & pray for them but we are also told not to tolerate evil and yes, there are “just” wars where God expects you to kill your enemies out of necessity/justice. With your & the priests mindset, we would never have had the Revolutionary War, WWII and wouldn’t be here today – free as God wanted. God recognizes that sometimes you have to have wars & kill people. This principle is also true when it comes to the death penalty – they did that all the time to keep order/justice in society. And may I say, this isn’t the only issues that people/priests are wrong about that is destructive & is only part of the problem and not the solution.

This is a huge victory for the US Military and this country. It represents closure to those who lost their loved ones on that day. Yes, he will be judged by God, not man, but at the end of the day, we have should all be glad this man has been removed from the earth. I am very happy that we accomplished something that has been an objective of this country’s for some time now. God bless the USA!

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 9:15amI think you mean eisogesis rather than assegais. Eisogesis means reading meaning INTO the text rather than OUT of it, which exegesis does.
But you are right, Bill does that frequently. His knowledge of Scripture is not great, and no one, even himself, would call him a DEVOUT Christian. I didn’t watch the segment myself but I can imagine the finer points of Christian ethics going right over his head.
Still, to say that we acted “just like a Middle Eastern country” is, I think, unfair. We did not rejoice in the death of a man simply because he was our enemy but because he was a great murderer. Read some of the psalms and you will see that a desire for justice is strong and not ungodly. “How long?” is a cry that goes up to God frequently in Scripture. The relief felt at long suffered injustice finally being answered should not be disparaged.

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 1:43pm“Tell that face to face to all the thousands of American families who lost love[d] ones on that dreadful day.” Fair enough, but what of the thousands of American military families who have lost loved ones in Afghanistan and Iraq in unnecessary wars in the decade since?
True, Osama declared “war” on the US, but since when do you allow your enemies the nature of your reaction? This was a crime, not a Pearl Harbor-style attack carried out by a sovereign nation. Reacting to it was always a job for small, special ops teams acting on human intelligence, not for massive military operations costing hundreds of billions, wasting thousands of lives and making America look blundering and clueless.
“Look first to the rectification of names,” said Confucius. The name “War on Terror” has confused us about the real nature of the threat. Osama has paid for his crime, but the nature of our response to it has severely weakened and divided America.
Rose-Ellen: we have not tortured and killed “millions” of Arabs! Dial down the rhetoric and make your case less offensively, and you will make it more effectively!

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 12:45pmOverreaction? No, but definitely the wrong reaction.
In the aftermath of 9/11, we ought to have nuked Tora Bora, both to demonstrate our displeasure and to make sure that OBL and most of his closest henchmen would no longer infect the planet. Yes, innocents would have died, but it would have been quick.
But no, instead we had to attempt “nation building” in a country that for most of its history has been a collection of feuding warlords and tribes, an exercise in futility that defeated the British (twice), and contributed greatly to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Compounding that blunder, we then attempted the same thing in Iraq, which had had nothing to do with 9/11 but was a mostly Arab, Muslim country. Never let a crisis go to waste! In this case, a crisis was used to sell a gullible American public eager for payback on somebody, anybody in that general area of the world.
The ensuing wars have cost thousands of American lives, and hundreds of billions of dollars, almost all of it unfunded by adequate tax revenues. A good deal of our current national debt would not exist if Americans (excluding of course the military) had been asked to help pay for these military adventures. But all we were expected to do was shout patriotic slogans, be afraid, take off our shoes and settle for tiny little shampoo bottles at airports, and go shopping, instead of ponying up as a mature democracy ought to have done.
In this sense, O”Donnell is absolutely right.

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 8:55amOver reaction is probably the biggest understatement of our lifetime. Instead of using an air craft carrier and taking out strategic targets in Afghanistan or Saudi? for 6 months to a year at a cost of probably 10s of billions of dollars, we chose to send our Armies across the globe to occupy a foreign sovereign nation for at least one decade, a couple of years later declaring War on another sovereign nation which had absolutely nothing to do with what happened on 9/11, creating the biggest security agency ever placed on earth called the DHS which includes the TSA, and passing the un Patriot Act which has the potential to become a nightmare for every Constitutional Red White and Blue flag waving American!!! Now the cost of these operates the last I heard was approaching a TRILLION and a half dollars, thousands of dead US soldiers, and tens of thousands of maimed soldiers, and a total and complete hatred from almost every corner of the globe of everything American for decades to come..
Now what have we got in return? Is everyone confident in the future of a free and democratic Iraq? I sure hope so… What about Afghanistan? You confident in the future of Afghanistan after we withdraw? Lol What about Israel? Do you think Arabs have a greater interest in the peace and security of Israel now than before 9/11?
So we have basically taken out the head of a terrorist organization and many of its minions at this very heavy cost to our Republic and in the process have probably created thousands of more just like them to carry on their mission.
We never addressed the root of the problem which according to OBL was our military bases in the Middle East and our support of Israel. In the end it’s been just a big colossal waste of American blood and treasure for nothing!! Nothing!!! And you fools are too blind to see it for what it is!
I can’t wait to hear how we are better off as a result of our actions from the War on Terror. Please inform me so I can join the celebrations.

There’s no sane reason we had to occupy those nations.. Especially not Iraq.
As far as Israel goes I didn’t say turn our back on them but if we are going to arm them militarily enabling them to slaughter Palestinians and support them finanically enabling to project their power over the entire Middle East then expect Arabs in the area to not only oppose us but to attempt to fight us… I mean that‘s what I’d do if I were an Arab. Just saying..
Anyway, my proposal would have cost us maybe 100-200 Billion over a year and probably loss of no American lives. So who are we kidding? This was never about taking Al Quaida in Afghanistan.. lol
