Did ‘America’s Got Talent’ Contestant Lie About Being Wounded in Afghanistan? Fiancee Speaks Out

Tim Poe: Did Americas Got Talent Contestant Lie About Being Wounded in Afghanistan? Fiance Carrie Morris Speaks Out on Joe Pags Radio ShowMINNEAPOLIS (The Blaze/AP) — Timothy Michael Poe won over the crowd and the judges of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” even before he began to sing, with his moving story of blocking a grenade blast in 2009 to save his buddies in Afghanistan – an act of heroism he said broke his back and left him with a brain injury.

When a judge remarked during the episode broadcast Monday on the disappearance of Poe’s stutter during his cover of a Garth Brooks song, he spun another tale: He discovered his talent only after his speech therapist suggested he sing in the shower to help with the stutter.

The truth, according to an ex-wife, was that Poe not only was never hurt on the battlefield, he had been singing “pretty much his whole life” and spent four years fronting an alternative rock and cover band in Rochester, Minn. A MySpace page last updated in February 2009 for the Rochester band Crawl Space lists Poe as vocalist.

In another discrepancy, it was confirmed Thursday that Poe gave “America’s Got Talent” and WFAA a photograph of another soldier and passed it off as himself. The caption of the original picture on the official military website Defense.gov says it shows Staff Sgt. Norman Bone serving in Afghanistan in 2006.

But the contestant’s fiancée, Carrie Morris, tells a different story. According to Morris, Poe, while going through a myriad pictures he has uploaded to his computer, accidentally attached an errant photo in addition to others in an email sent to America’s Got Talent producers. She went on the record with talk radio host and friend of the Glenn Beck program, Joe Pags, who also managed to obtain what appear to be military records reflecting the contestant’s medical condition. If genuine, the records would seem to corroborate Poe and Morris’ story. However, military medical records like this have been fabricated before, thus Pags, and The Blaze remain cautious until the documents’ have been validated.

“It was a complete accident,” Morris said of the mistaken photo sent to America’s Got Talent.

Morris said Poe “feels like America is turning their back on him” and that it’s hard for her to listen to all the attacks.

“It’s hard. I’m about to marry this man,” Morris said. “He is a good father. He is a good man. He is a good friend,” she told AP.

Listen below as Morris discusses the incident with Joe Pags. Scans of the military records follow:

Singing was the least of Poe’s fictions, according to the Minnesota Army National Guard, which has issued statements contradicting Poe’s account on the television show, igniting a firestorm online, especially among veterans and on military blogs, over Poe allegedly claiming glory and sympathy to which he’s not entitled.

The Guard says its records show Poe never was injured in combat in Afghanistan or Iraq.

“It‘s embarrassing for me and it’s embarrassing for his children and it’s embarrassing for the military,” said Shannon Conroy, who was married to Poe from November 2005 until this April.

Below are just a few of the records sent Joe Pags that, if real, might dictate otherwise:

Tim Poe: Did Americas Got Talent Contestant Lie About Being Wounded in Afghanistan? Fiance Carrie Morris Speaks Out on Joe Pags Radio ShowTim Poe: Did Americas Got Talent Contestant Lie About Being Wounded in Afghanistan? Fiance Carrie Morris Speaks Out on Joe Pags Radio Show

In the “America’s Got Talent” episode that aired Monday, Poe told judges Howie Mandel, Howard Stern and Sharon Osbourne that he spent 14 years in the military that included being attacked in Afghanistan.

“I had volunteered for a team to go out and clear buildings and help out with the wounded,” Poe said during a taped interview on the show. “There was a guy who comes up with a rocket-propelled grenade. I saw it coming down, and by the time I turned and went to jump on top of my guys, I yelled `grenade’ and the blast had hit me.”

Poe has declined multiple requests for comment from The Associated Press. Military records show he served with the Guard from December 2002 through May 2011, as a supply specialist. They show he was deployed in Kosovo from October 2007 to July 2008, and then served in Afghanistan for about a month in mid-2009. The sergeant was honorably discharged in 2011 because of a medical disability.

“His voice, and the fact that he was in the military, the true part, should’ve been enough to get him by,” Conroy said. “His singing alone is amazing, and I will never doubt that, but he goes a little too far.”

The 35-year-old San Antonio, Texas, man claimed when he spoke to WFAA-TV of Dallas last month that he was also wounded in Iraq in 2005, when his truck was hit by a roadside bomb.

In a detailed rebuttal Thursday, Lt. Col Kevin Olson, a spokesman for the Minnesota Army National Guard, wrote that none of the military records that Poe’s fiancée, Carrie Morris, provided to reporters back up his claims that he was ever injured in combat. However, he said, other documents indicate Poe suffered the injury that led to his medical retirement while training at Camp Atterbury in Indiana in mid-July 2009 before he deployed to Afghanistan. He also said there were no official records showing that he ever deployed to Iraq or was injured there. He said Poe reported to Camp Shelby in Mississippi “for pre-mobilization training on Sept. 21, 2005, but ultimately did not deploy” to Iraq.

Conroy told the AP that Poe broke his back in November 2005 in Mississippi, and was treated at Fort Benning in Georgia until March 2006, when he returned to Minnesota for back surgery. She said Poe was in Afghanistan for a short time in 2009, then went to Germany for medical treatment.

The ex-wife said she got “very conflicting stories” from him and people in his unit about what he was treated for. She says Poe told her a rocket-propelled grenade had gone off near his convoy, while people in his unit told her Poe was never hurt in battle and instead had been injured during a training exercise before he went to Afghanistan and then experienced symptoms of the same problem while deployed.

Poe is being savaged by veterans and on military blogs and in social media.

Nick Colgin, a medic who earned a Bronze Star for valor during his 15-month deployment in Afghanistan, said fabricated tales of heroism dishonor other veterans whose service goes unnoticed.

“There’s 2.4 million veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq and for someone to go on national TV and bring disrespect to them and their service – it’s inexcusable,” said Colgin, who came home in 2008 with a brain injury after a rocket-propelled grenade hit the side of his Humvee.

John Kriesel served in Iraq until a roadside bomb hit his Humvee, killing two of his buddies and costing him both of his legs.

“He was a veteran. He has nothing to make up. Being a veteran is honorable,” Kriesel said. “Why lie about what you’ve done?”

It’s unclear whether Poe could face any legal action. While the federal Stolen Valor Act allows prosecution when people make false claims about receiving medals, Poe didn’t say anything about medals in passages that have aired. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule within a few weeks on whether the law is constitutional.

Kriesel said he hopes someone does prosecute Poe if he lied about his service.

“The thing I think is funny is he lied to become famous,” Kriesel said. “He got his wish, he‘s all over the news now and I don’t think it’s for the reasons he wanted.”

Am I the only one wondering why they keep sifting through military records rather than just asking his Company Commander and the “his guys” who he allegedly saved? If he’s telling the truth, wouldn’t he just say – go ask Sgt. so and so? Seems pretty simple.

When I first logged on this story, a copy of his orders was present. For some reason, it is gone or my PC won’t let me see it.

In any event, there was a section entitled Significant Awards: None

Seems to me that if he was wounded in combat, he would have a Purple Heart.

You never hear a Real Hero brag about his exploits in the wars. In fact if someone really has been decorated for actions like that you would be hard pressed to even get them to tell you.
I served in Vietnam and the only people I knew that constantly talked in public about all the “heroic” things they did there, were the Posers. The Real heroes didn’t need public adoration. They had live buddies.
The guy is a jerk. And so is anyone who uses their military record to try to impress

Horrors, a reality TV show with a little taste if reality today!
One of the benefits of removing morality from our public schools was the feels good mentality.
Is anyone really surprised that some guy would use a little lying to get ahead?
He’s not the first to make himself sympathetic, using someone else’s heroism. The haughty John Kerry Heinz, who served in Vietnam, comes to mind.
When he tried to use his own heroism, a bunch of fellow heros showed up to destroy his story. At least the good people of MA believed him. Sen. Heinz is still a hero in his own mind!

Did you happen to see the head law man in DC perform his dog and pony show yesterday? How about our dear leader and all the lies he tells. (Republicans want dirty air and dirty water!)
Now these are folks that are given the reins of our government, and they lie every day to hide their incompetence!

Lets face it folks, if your going to turn a lie into success, what better place then on a reality TV show?

He did lie about learning to sing in the shower. I found his old band’s web-site, plenty of pictures of him singing shows for a rock band called “crawl space”.

Also, he’s not even a good singer. Had the story been true, I wouldn’t have voted for him anyhow. The last thing we want is another ho hum singer winning for the 5th year in a row when there are exceptional talents, even geniuses, who have auditioned. He is a mediocre singer who would not have made it out of playing in bars without this story.

This should be punishable and I hope that the soldier Norman does take legal action (the real soldier in the pictures Poe sent to AGT). This is disgusting.

I think a lot of people are turned off by the show. No more stories please, just let them play. Also, I think wolf eyes goth boy needs to be investigated. His story is BS too.

You have no idea what you are talking about. I take exception to you degrading veterans and portaying them as liars. It is the VA that determines if someone has a disability. I served for 20+ years, never in combat as I am female, yet I have conditions that the VA states are service connected disabilities. I don’t claim to be disable, the VA does. Why, you may ask? because the military is strenuous. They require us to work in very austere conditions and under extremely stressful OPSTEMPO. That takes a toll on ones body, but I doubt you would ever understand that! I doubt you have ever had the cahones to volunteer to put your life in harms way for anything. How dare you denigrate disabled veterans and portay them as fakers! Since you have no idea what you are talking about, just keep your mouth shut and stop embarrassing yourself!

      Agreed.

The definition of “disability” has changed substantially since the Greatest Generation returned to civilian life.

Ever notice in the post-war biographies about the soldiers from Easy Company all of them had employment and successful careers in spite more than half of them having taken a bullet at some point in time?

I agree with the touchy suggestion that I think was first made here (maybe not), that liberals found it was unpopular to spit on returning veterans, so they now convince them all they are ‘disabled’ or mentally damaged (PTSD). It makes it so much easier to discredit them. I know as a veteran myself I find it tough to take them seriously. My first suspicion was right after Gulf 1 when an Air Force reservist I knew managed to win partial disability for PTSD. He was deployed to Saudi for four months guarding airplanes…never saw an Iraqi (or even Kuwait) and never fired a shot in anger…but somehow he was “traumatized” and stressed about it when he came back.

His favorite story to tell was when he allegedly struck Colin Powell on the head with his rifle because he claims Colin refused to comply with instructions to exit an airplane when a scud alert was sounded.

      Embarrassing.

Yeah, veterans, like every other group in this society, are “entitled”, right – no matter whether they are actually deserving, correct?

Also, I am a veteran and I’m tired of you people and your candy-assed, entitlement mentality – which has essentially destroyed the foundation of this society. The whole concept of the American experiment is that nobody gets special treatment. Be independent and persevere.

Sorry, but the Obama admin is trying to get as many people as they can on disability. Voters. All of the requirements have been loosened. Practically anybody with a good story and doctor in tow can get it. Military people know this too, and rather than try to find a job, where there is none, it is easier to get disability. Military people are like everyone else in our country.

It takes more than being wounded or taking a bullet in combat to become a disabled veteran. Of course those of you who chose to denigrate our disabled veterans are not veterans and have never served, so you have no idea what conditions any of our service members have served in. In 1990 while training at Ft. Benning’s School for Wayward Boys otherwise known as the Infantry Officer Basic Course I heat stroked. It was the first of June. Approximately 10:30 a.m. The temperature was already 95 degrees and the humidity was 100 percent. We were instructed to suit up in full chemical protective equipment at 10:00 a.m. I lasted thirty minutes before I fell out and my brain cells started dieing! I was unconcious for six hours and spent fifteen days in Martin Army Hospital. Thirteen of those days I had an 18 guage needle in my arm attached to an I.V. that ran wide open until is was empty and replaced with a new one, 24/7. Guess what? I didn’t go on disablility. I manipulated the system and was able to stay in another six years. Do I deserve a disability payment maybe, maybe not. I don’t really care. I don’t need it. However, 99 percent of our service members that draw a disablility went through some type of hell that you will never understand to qualify for that disability. Shut up about it already. You sound like you’re jealous because they get paid for their pain and suffering.

As a former veteran from a family with a broad military tradition (honorably discharged “combat medic” with zero combat experience, stellar record, never did anything more dangerous than try to swim in the Caribbean off Los Machos Beach while substantially intoxicated)…one thing I’ve learned is that MOST veterans “enhance” their description of their military experiences.

I served with tons of soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines who scrubbed toilets, repaired runway lighting, pushed paper, banged on a computer, maintained airplane electronics, or served as glorified security guards…but one thing I’ve learned is that nearly all of them will present the “special ops fireteam leader scout sniper combat recon rescue jumper” version of their military tenure.

    Just saying…

Is there any part of your military experience that you have divulged that has been enhanced?

I guess I must be part of the “1%” of the veterans who do not embellish their record. I was in the army during the Vietnam war, but did not serve in combat. I was on a missile base in Germany. I had one opportunity to become a helicopter pilot but it was pretty much a forgone conclusion that after my training I would be sent to Vietnam. Many times I have wondered how my life would have changed had I taken the training. I may have died back in the day or I could have been flying choppers after the war. Thats part of what life is about. Making choices.

@ Blazingbakedbeans…what do you see that I might’ve enhanced? I didn’t claim to take a grenade for anyone or say (as this clown did) that I served in combat when I never did. I specifically pointed out the boring nature of my enlistment.

@ LIRight…no doubt. The link you shared reflects the tendency to embellish. I recently had this discussion with a former Army Ranger who agreed that although he had a non-descript enlistment along with most of his fellow Rangers, almost everyone he encountered who were post discharge had fantastic stories to tell of their military accomplishments.

@ Crazyotto…who do you ‘not agree’ with? Are you simply not agreeing with the fact that so many ex-military add a bit of spice to their enlistments? I also came from a broad military tradition…two siblings, both lifers. Both parents, dad was a lifer. I believe that what most veterans tell their families is not necessarily the same as what they tell anyone else. A family does not need to be impressed with a relative who served and they have a different vestment.

most ww2 vets will talk to there families about funny or enjoyable things that happened in training. However the combat experience was another story. He didn’t talk to anyone about it I got a few bits and pieces of it out of him as I got older. It was truly horrible.I understood then why he didn’t want to talk about it.Back then part of training was permimeter training. It wasn’t for civilian duty or even base duty.It was meant to teach patience and endurance.[The difference in it is that those who gaurded usually had 12 hour shifts. Those who were going overseas could have up to 48 72 hour shifts]
Don’t bother trying to explain to some of these people the difference. They will just claim you don’t know what you are talking about. They will minimize.

Just signing the papers to enlist doesn’t make one honorable. It takes the experience of the whole tour/time in rate. It said he was injured before he could actually GO so he didn’t see any real service. He’s probably making up the story to ease his manhood injury (ego). Still doesn’t make it right. I have only 4 years service (and only one “war story”) compared to my husband’s 20 years and numerous stories. I feel a bit embarassed swapping stories when I have only one to tell and I’m done. But I won’t make things up. My nephew, while still in training, came home on leave with a broken camera. He told the local Walmart it was broken in combat in Afghanistan in order to get a free one. His first duty station was a ship that went to Haiti for earthquake clean up. I bet he doesn’t tell false stories anymore.

That completes this ………well choreographed charade ….
That is nothing more than bread and circuses …for the sheep.

I saw him on the show and a little bell went off in my head when he said he yelled “grenade” when he saw an RPG and jumped “ON TOP OF HIS MEN” ….

He was a veteran, he did not have to make anything up.

The sad thing is that it really wasn’t necessary. He could have moved on to the next round based on his talent alone.

No he’s not a good singer. My first thought was “oh great people are going to vote for a mediocre singer b/c of the backstory and we’ll have another ho hum singer winning for the 5th year in a row”. He’s very average in his singing and playing. Plus there are others on the show who are exceptional even geniuses.

I don’t think my last comment got posted but I found the web-site of his old band “crawl space” with tons of pictures of him singing on stage in Minnesota. So he most definitely lied about learning to sing in the shower and singing for therapy.

I’m totally turned off by AGT and all the stories, I’d rather people just perform, no stories at all. I also hope that the real soldier in the picture, Norman takes legal action. If he “accidentally” sent 4 pictures of somebody else, WHERE ARE THE PICTURES OF HIM? We still haven’t seen any.

Lastly, I think wolf eyes goth boy needs to be investigated. His story is also BS.

Wow. I knew from the second I saw this act that something was not right about his story. Always trust your “gut” feelings I guess.

I believed his story at first. But I noticed that the longer he spoke to the judges, his stuttering “changed”. That‘s when I felt something wasn’t right.

How did he think he could go on national TV and get away with it?

Mannnn, I saw this episode of AGT and I was touched by his story….what a disappointment. He stated he had started stuttering because of a war related head injury and singing was his therapy. His stuttering would cease while singing (like Mel Tillis). Sadly, it looks like he has a history of embellishing his military experience.

    He’s got problems…
