Did Chris Matthews Really Compare Kansas’ Abortion Regulations to Racist Jim Crow Efforts?

On Thursday night‘s episode of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” host Chris Matthews compared the way in which Kansas’ new abortion regulations were implemented to the instillation of Jim Crow laws in the South. He said:
…is this basically setting a whole bunch of conditions like they used to do with literacy tests in the South to keep blacks from voting. Is this a bunch of regulations that basically kill any chance of having an abortion legally in Kansas?
While Matthews does, indeed, go on to claim that his analogy isn’t “exactly parallel,” the comparison is a bit outlandish. Jim Crow laws were tragically utilized to discriminate against a specific race. It is hard to imagine that new regulations being set in Kansas at all compare to the livelihoods that were destroyed through institutional racism.
At the least, Matthews comments were over-the-top. Watch the video for yourself below:

Posted on July 1, 2011 at 8:51pmNot sure why anyone calls attention to him. His ratings suck and he gets more attention on these sites than his program attracks. He‘s hard to watch and they have to hand out towels to the guests to wipe themselves after he’s done spraying them with his saliva. Never seen a host who has to slurp it back after every sentence. Very gross.

Posted on July 1, 2011 at 8:40pmWhat is the problem with abortion? Or with homosexuality. Liberals abort their children and gays usually don’t have any unless they adopt. If it weren’t for the Marxist teachers union we could end liberalism in one generation.

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 11:30amIndeed. Chrissy seems unaware that abortion was originally championed by the left to control and eventually eliminate racial ‘inferiors’, which included the mentally and developmentally disabled, ethnic and racial minorities, and so on. And now it is being used as a mere from of birth control, but much more than that: it is the instrument by which the west is committing cultural suicide; as developed producer nations abort their children out of convenience, they are not replacing themselves. Meanwhile, cultures that produce little and consume much are reproducing at incredible rates. This means fewer and fewer will be providing for the needs of more and more of those unable to care for themselves. We are headed toward a world that looks like Somalia or Mexico.

Posted on July 2, 2011 at 2:12pmOk we do understand what analogy means right. In this sense he was referring to the development of seeming reasonable medical care regulations that were developed and implemented for no other reason than to effectively ban abortion in Kansas. So in that sense they are similar to Jim Crow laws which we enacted to restrict ability for blacks to vote, among other things. The analogy derives from the use of these regulations to restrict a woman’s right to choose. But than again this is from a state that wanted to teach creationism in science class.
