CNN & Time Each Suspend Fareed Zakaria After He Admits to Plagiarizing Gun Control Article

CNN and Time magazine have each suspended Fareed Zakaria after he admitted to plagiarizing a column on gun control from a recent New Yorker article.

Zakaria is Time’s editor-at-large and hosts the weekly “Fareed Zakaria GPS” on CNN.

“Media reporters have pointed out that paragraphs in my Time column this week bear close similarities to paragraphs in Jill Lepore’s essay in the April 23rd issue of The New Yorker,” Zakaria said in a statement Friday afternoon. “They are right. I made a terrible mistake. It is a serious lapse and one that is entirely my fault. I apologize unreservedly to her, to my editors at Time, and to my readers.”

Following Zakaria’s apology, Time and CNN each released separate statements announcing that he was being suspended.

“TIME accepts Fareed’s apology, but what he did violates our own standards for our columnists, which is that their work must not only be factual but original; their views must not only be their own but their words as well,” Time’s statement said. “As a result, we are suspending Fareed’s column for a month, pending further review.”

CNN said Zakaria wrote a similar blog post containing unattributed portions for CNN.com and they were suspending him as well, without giving a time frame for his reinstatement.

“We have reviewed Fareed Zakaria’s TIME column, for which he has apologized,” the CNN statement said. “He wrote a shorter blog post on CNN.com on the same issue which included similar unattributed excerpts. That blog post has been removed and CNN has suspended Fareed Zakaria while this matter is under review.”

The whole saga began Friday morning after NewsBusters flagged a paragraph from Zakaria’s latest column, “The Case for Gun Control,” that bore a striking resemblance to Jill Lapore’s “Battleground America” for the New Yorker:

First, Zakaria’s “The Case for Gun Control” piece from Time magazine’s upcoming Aug. 20 issue:

Adam Winkler, a professor of constitutional law at UCLA, documents the actual history in Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America. Guns were regulated in the U.S. from the earliest years of the Republic. Laws that banned the carrying of concealed weapons were passed in Kentucky and Louisiana in 1813. Other states soon followed: Indiana in 1820, Tennessee and Virginia in 1838, Alabama in 1839 and Ohio in 1859. Similar laws were passed in Texas, Florida and Oklahoma. As the governor of Texas (Texas!) explained in 1893, the “mission of the concealed deadly weapon is murder. To check it is the duty of every self-respecting, law-abiding man.”

Compare that to Lepore’s “Battleground America” New Yorker article back in April:

As Adam Winkler, a constitutional-law scholar at U.C.L.A., demonstrates in a remarkably nuanced new book, “Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America,” firearms have been regulated in the United States from the start. National Review also noted Zakaria’s final sentence of the following passage uses “almost the exact same language” as Lepore:

Jackson, said the Second Amendment grants people a right that “is not one which may be utilized for private purposes but only one which exists where the arms are borne in the militia or some other military organization provided for by law and intended for the protection of the state.” The court agreed unanimously.

Now the New Yorker:

[...] Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s solicitor general, Robert H. Jackson, argued that the Second Amendment is “restricted to the keeping and bearing of arms by the people collectively for their common defense and security.” Furthermore, Jackson said, the language of the amendment makes clear that the right “is not one which may be utilized for private purposes but only one which exists where the arms are borne in the militia or some other military organization provided for by law and intended for the protection of the state.” The Court agreed, unanimously.

As the Atlantic pointed out, it’s not the first time Zakaria has been under the plagiarism cloud.

    Here is my Take on Gun Control of Any Type….. I am Law Abiding and Pray all the time I never have to use my LEGAL Weapon. I believe with TRUE Conviction that ALL other Law Abiding Gun Owners feel the same.

      How many criminals use their LEGALLY aquired weapons? And using a firearm in crime is a CRIME. But I should give up my right to own a gun because others can’t control themselves? How about drunk drivers, they kill more people a year than guns, should we just ban private ownership of cars. Only the military should have such a devestating and dangerous weapon. Then all of us sheeple can be herded into the city and fed soylent green………ITS PEOPLE.

      Close once. Still have not figured out what the guy was babbling about but when he went back to his car and got out a heavy wooden cane and started toward me I was calm and left him go. I had a point of no return for him, lucky for him he did not pass it. He never knew how close he was to a 40 with hollow points. The point is how calm I felt with no desire to pull my weapon unless I had to.

But I will defend and stand behind the 2nd Amendment each and every time against these liberals who only want criminals owning guns.       Widely accepted and standard practice in Indian culture, from what I’ve been told by actual Indians. The graduate programs in the US actually have to accomodate it, no joke, seen it. The Indians were actually more shocked they’d been called out for it and were amazed it was a problem, which it wasn‘t once the admin found it wasn’t white Americans from the group who had plagiarized. Explusion from the program would have resulted otherwise.

      Actually, Nelson (publisher) has only pulled the current publication, “. . .The Jefferson Lies: Exposing the Myths You’ve Always Believed about Thomas Jefferson, saying it has ‘lost confidence in the book’s details.’” (See: http://www.worldmag.com/webextra/19840 and other linked information from this site.)

      Personally, I don’t know who “World Magazine” is, it’s funding source, it’s ideology or mission. I am “interested” that one of the leaders in reviewing this text was Jay Richards, Senior Fellow of the Discovery Institute (co-author with James Robison in a current book). I don‘t know Richards’ ideology either, but will look into the claims more.

      I do believe that Barton has many source, personal and published beyond what most authors and writers would use to develop their thesis. At the same time there is much “spin” today compared to just a few years ago, concerning history recent and old. I’m basing my claims on history I have LIVED THROUGH that many “scholars” today claim is completely different than what I experienced and/or than what I understood at the time it was occurring!

      Never thought I’d live to the day where truth is no longer truth, and lies are expected and accepted as truth!

      The interesting thing that Fareed pointed out was that 911 was not a reaction to American foreign policy. The left didn’t get the memo (or refused to reads as it was heresy). Mr Zakaria does not at the visceral level understand the 2nd Amendment because he can choose fairly easily where he is going to live, so he never sees a need for self defense. If he is honest considering his Yale debating days, then he could be deprogrammed.

      It‘s almost as bad as David Barton’s Christian publisher pulling his book on Thomas Jefferson due to inaccuracies.

      Not that I agree with plagiarism, though, no matter what the political persuasion. I think it’s horrible that he did it.

      And I will be surprised if many conservatives correctly spell “plagiarized” in the comment section even with it being printed in the article’s title.

    American’s were far less suspicious of their government then, and, of course, the Federal Government was much closer to what it was supposed to be than what it is now. To have politicians passing unconstitutional laws doesn’t make then constitutional, just like having a Supreme Court that upholds a patently unconstitutional law still doesn’t make it legal either.
    They have been allowed to “get away” with it and unless we stop them from doing this we will have slammed the door shut on our own jail cell, because America will merely be a huge prison!
