Did Glenn Beck Really Tell His Audience to ‘Shoot’ People ‘In the Head’?

There’s a 22-second Glenn Beck clip starting to make its way around the internet. It reportedly shows Beck telling his audience to “shoot them in the head” (and never explaining who “them” are). Liberals have used the statement as proof that Beck is calling on his audience to take up arms against the government. So is he? Was he?

Not even close.

The website Patterico’s Pontifications went in depth to look at the clip and its full context. What it found can only be considered depressing for the liberals and progressives trying to incite anti-Beck anger.

First, the clip making the rounds:

Pretty damning, huh? One commenter on YouTube even wrote, “This is why Comedy Central is my news channel and Fox News is my comedy channel.”

But there’s just one problem: the video actually means something completely different from what is being portrayed. Patterico’s Pontifications tracked down a transcript of the show and found what Beck was really saying — he was discussing what might happen if the progressives succeed in rallying the left to violent revolution:

When you read it, you will see that the word “you” refers to the leftist politicians in Washington and their pals in the media, and “they” refers to their radical leftist friends — who, Beck warns, actually believe there must be violent revolution . . . and if they don’t get what they want, they may start one.

Here’s the full context included in the transcript:

Just because you in Washington and you who are so out of touch with life in the media, just because you don‘t believe in anything doesn’t mean nobody else does. We do. You know why you’re confused by this show? It’s because I believe in something. You don’t.

Tea parties believe in small government. We believe in returning to the principles of our Founding Fathers. We respect them. We revere them. Shoot me in the head before I stop talking about the Founders. Shoot me in the head if you try to change our government.

I will stand against you and so will millions of others. We believe in something. You in the media and most in Washington don’t. The radicals that you and Washington have co-opted and brought in wearing sheep’s clothing — change the pose. You will get the ends.

You’ve been using them? They believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You’re going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.

They are dangerous because they believe. Karl Marx is their George Washington. You will never change their mind. And if they feel you have lied to them — they’re revolutionaries. Nancy Pelosi, those are the people you should be worried about.

Beck telling his audience to take up arms? As Patterico’s Pontifications says, “Nothing could be further from the truth.” NewsBusters says there’s, “nothing to the charge,” and RedState goes as far as to say, “I’m almost embarrassed for anybody gullible enough that they fell for this one.”

Funny how things change once you get the full context.

    I DVR Beck and I watch that show and it was not hate speech it was the truth. If they watched more than the 22 sec. sound byte they would have know what he was saying about the radicals who are out calling for violence. Oh wait then they could not let the truth be known. They cannot let their plans be known. So they must keep lying. Got to twist the truth make him look like a voilent person. I must be violent and dangerous too then.

    But all my lib friends INSIST they have seen Glenn Beck…all of them…oh, you know, clips like THIS one…THAT is what they’ve seen…but NONE of them have ever sat down and watched even ONE of his shows, begining to end…so, they LIE when they say they’ve watched Beck. They couldn’t make it through even ONE of his shows…because what he stands for is individual freedom, honor, charity, and hope…the ability of a group of people called America…to govern themselves, and take care of one another. They would completely and violently retch the contents of their stomachs if they had to submit their ears to those messages, for, you see, we are all ignoramuses, that need their superior intellect and moral fiber, to make our lives right.       First, he says “you in Washington” and “you…in the media”. He then tells us that those two groups “don’t believe in anything”. He also says that the “we” (Glenn Beck and millions of Americans) DO believe in something, namely the principles put forth by our Founding Fathers. He then makes the extreme point that he will have to be shot in the head before he stops talking about the Founders. And that he would rather be shot in the head than watch “you” change our government.

      He then goes on to say that “you” (see my first sentence) have brought in “radicals” that also believe in something…“communism” and “revolution”. And that because they hold to their beliefs just as strongly as we (Glenn and the millions of Americans) do, “you” will also have to shoot them in the head before they will turn away from those beliefs. He then warns them that the very radicals they have brought in may turn the tables and shoot them first.

      “YOU” are the radicals that believe in revolutionary change/violent revolution. The radicals have been co-opted and used by the liberal/progressives to achieve their ends.       I am truly amazed everyday at how Glenn is portrayed. I can also speak from experience of being a liberal (although only for a few years during college and a couple years after) that most liberals and people for that matter listen to sound bytes and that makes it true.
      Probably the only thing I disagree with Glenn on is that the American people are smart. Maybe he‘s right that they are smart but just asleep or maybe it’s lazy. I pray everyday for people to wake up to this chicanery.

Life is not fair but God uses negative things that happen to us to glorify him by opening other doors of great achievement. I speak from experience. My husband refused to go along with corruption, lost his job but got a better paying one. God honored his integrity. That is what it is all about.       @ Nickderinger. I’m an atheist, (except I allow I am not totally sure) but I’m not a lefty. I avoided mentioning that that when I was in the USA as I like Americans and didn’t want to upset them. I didn’t try to persuade anybody but I found that some people became a bit agitated when they found out.

      In New Zealand about 40 – 45 per cent of the population considers themselves athiest or agnostic (if I remember the census results correctly) but no-one considers it a “belief” or promotes it. It is just our opinion.

      Back on topic, I remembered that particular show vaguely and knew the clip was a cheat. Glenn’s show is broadcast twice a day here so we can watch it regardless of the time difference. The guy that stooped so low as to do this probably thinks he is particularly clever but I won’t damn all leftwingers because of him. A number of my friends are lefties and we have some very enjoyable debates – usually lubricated by beer.

      @ Untameable Kate, some people’s minds are made up and they refuse to be confused by facts. If they are otherwise likeable just avoid politics. Try and find some lefties who allow that they don’t know everything and have a friendly debate. I find it a lot of fun and its a good way to test one’s philosophies.

      Don’t just explain that this clip had to be taken out of context to reverse the meaning. Note that if Glenn really thought what the clip edit was meant to portray there would be ample footage in context. The only reason this clip had to be editted is that Glenn actually believes, as have I and many of his fans long before he cam along, that Conservative principles are the compassionate answer and that liberal ideas no matter the intent of the supporters are simply a means to power for the ruthless.

      That episode gives me chills. So ancient as far as t.v. shows go, but SO relevant as far as current events have transpired – and will transpire unless people smarten up.

      I wish Glenn Beck would devote an entire episode to it. Very powerful message.

      The left/obama says we need civility..well, telling the whole truth is a form of civility…maybe they should try that for a change. Since Obama made his remarks..the left hate speech has intensified.

      @MOUNTAINCLIMBER, It is my understanding that the reason the U.S. military changed from 7.62mm rounds to 5.56mm rounds is just for that reason. If you kill an enemy, you only take one out of the fight. If you injure him, then you take out at least two. However many needed to come to their aid, not to mention keeping their docs busy.

      @benditlikebeck, I have your answer. beck is not suggesting AT ALL that ‘someone shoot someone else” in the head. He was describing to the liberal sheep such as yourself what will go down if they actually (laugh) win this fight, and that is the elitists in power will USE you simpleton posters/propaganda believers to do their bidding, which will be to riot and die in the streets to propagate their agenda, while they sit and watch it all unfold on CNN. Kinda like what you ******** described when “Shock and Awe” was happenning. That the right ring war mongers were sitting back and letting American Soldiers and Marines die for their cause. Wise the eff up and grow the eff up.
      What Beck was describing was a “bullet to the head” of you sheep followers who will do their bidding until your usefulness is done, then you will feed their machine in a more useful way: organ farming. And if you say “no way they will do that” look at the story from China where they do that all the time!
      Beck was in NO WAY advocating for us (tea-baggers) to shoot ANYONE in the head, he was illustrating that YOU will be shot in the head by your “leaders” once your usefulness was over.
      If you see the whole clip and pay attention, you will understand. If you are here to just follow the orders of those who want you to “do their bidding”, then maybe you should take a step back and ponder. if you are lock-step with these liars and propagandists, then God help you. Not only have you not founf salvation and repentance with the Lord, you will find death by the bullet and nothing to comfort you but the thought, “But they said…” BAM!

      I find it ironic that the the liberals who consider themselves so well educated and better than conservatives don’t know what a metaphor is. For you libs who don’t- Websters Dict. definition (when used in figurative language) : a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them . eg. He was drowning in paperwork.

      Glenn didn’t literally mean “shoot them in the head” any more than “I’m gonna kill him” when you’re mad, means you will literally kill someone. It means once no longer useful those who advocate for the left will be “kicked to the curb” (another metaphor by the way).
