Did Herman Cain End the GOP Debate With a Line From Pokemon?

Herman Cain Uses Pokemon Quote At End of GOP Debate

You know Pokémon, right? The cute, Furby-like creatures have been amazingly popular in video games, television and movies for more than a decade. Now, it seems the little monsters, having already conquered these venues, are working their way onto the American political stage.

At the end of last night’s debate, while issuing his final comments, Herman Cain told the crowd the following:

“A poet once said, ‘life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, but it’s never easy when there’s so much on the line.’”

Surely, there is wisdom in these words. Is life a challenge? Sure, sometimes. Can it seem impossible? Absolutely. But, as Daily Intel looked further into Cain’s words, a bizarre realization emerged: Not only is there apparently no poem that includes these inspiring lines, but the words, strung together in exactly the same way, appear to come directly from Donna Summer’s song, “The Power of One.”

According to Mediaite, this tune, which undisputedly includes these words, was used in the film, Pokémon: the Movie 2000. You can listen to the lyrics yourself:

As Mediaite quips, “It gets even weirder.” Daily Intel continues:

…it was hardly the first time Herman Cain had quoted, and incorrectly sourced, the lyrics from “The Power of One.” On a seemingly official website, Cain quotes the lyrics but attributes them to “the closing song to the 2000 Olympics.” He made the same mistake in his official campaign announcement on May 21.

Here is video footage of that campaign announcement:

And if you don’t believe us, go ahead and watch each of the candidates — including Cain — make their closing statements:

Of course, it could be possible that someone in the campaign heard the quote and decided to pass it on to Cain (clearly not thinking through the ramifications). Or, maybe Cain heard it, liked it and and couldn’t remember the original source.

Considering that he was addressing the American people (who, coincidentally, love consuming media), it’s hard to imagine that he would have used it had he known where it actually came from. Alas, it remains a mystery.

I care, there is always something to see!

If Cain has the intelligence to pick up wisdom no matter where it is found (even pokemon), then he will be a better president. Maybe if Obama would listen to the “little people” instead of thinking he is omniscient we would live in a better country.

First of all…the quote is from a Donna Summer song.
Second, it has very little to do with Pokemon…but that won’t get people to click on a link.
Third, if it is from the lyrics of a song, it can most certainly be said that “a poet once said”.
Are not the lyrics of a song essentially poetry joined with a melody?
Could not the songwriter be referred to as a poet?

But all of that isn’t news. So we have inane stories like this to read. Sheesh.

I have been really disappointed at the coverage Beck and the Blaze have been giving Cain. He is the only candidate that can win this election. His race, unfortunately, will prevent the media from crying racist and he could pull as much as 50% of the black vote. He is not only qualified, but principled and more articulate than most if not all of the present field. I would like to see a Cain/ Bachman ticket. It is an unbeatable combination.

He is a big Donna Summers fan and if she sourced her song from another “POET” before her and he was referring to that original source in a generic term. And it is not originally a “POKEMON” saying.

SO WHAT!!! This is what Newt Gingrich was referring to the idiocy of picking little nits and then saying your not fit for the Presidency by saying this or that…

It is why we have a President that does not know a thing about the peoples needs for a job. He is a Tool of the Progressive White Party and when they are done with him they will throw him aside like yesterdays dogfood.

I think Cain was running on the anti-Muslim ticket, anti-freedom-of-religion platform. But I think his handlers explained to him there weren’t enough Muslim haters to get him elected. I did not vote for Obama but had hoped that since he was the first black man elected to lead this great country, that he would ease the racial tension in this country. That he would help to put an end to so many black people thinking that whitie owes them a living.

Man was I wrong. He made it worse.

I do however think that Mr. Cain will not only have the opposite effect, that he will tell ALL the people (no mater what your skin color is) that if you WORK hard, you will be rewarded, if you do not, you will punish yourself. I think he would make a great President. We need an expert business man not another expert politician. I also like his outlook on religion.

The ONLY thing that Barney has done for this country is that we will NEVER again elect a liberal progressive Moslem Democrat to the office of the Presidency again.

When I was a little boy, we had a small white gas heater in the bathroom. My mother was always telling me and my brother to NEVER sit on it because it would burn us. Well my brother forgot and when he stepped out of the bath tub, he turned around, grabbed a towel and sat on the heater to bend over and dry his feet.

Mother NEVER again had to tell that boy,(or me either, after hearing him scream) to not sit on the heater.

Moral of the story is, once burned, twice learned.

I will give Barney credit for one thing.
He did give the go ahead to kill his brother Osama. But to have stopped it would have been the end of his rule. The people would have marched on Washington and demanded he be hung like the traitor to America he is.
      That still might happen.

That is not true. His take right or wrong, but his take is to not raise taxes on the American people and to lower or eliminate corporate taxes to bring business back to America. In his opinion that would produce more revenue because it would create jobs, thus people spend, thus revues come in. Like it or not that is his position. You r just looking at it from a different angle/opinion.

      Posted on August 12, 2011 at 1:37pm

The assertion “Lower taxes, thus more jobs” does not follow though and there is no proof for it actually happening. The proof goes more in the direction of “Lower taxes, thus more money hoarded”. This actually follows logically as companies do not pay taxes on money they reinvest, they only pay taxes on pure profits they keep. So higher taxes actually force companies to reinvest their money (creating more jobs in the process) instead of drawing it out of the company (thus destroying jobs). Of course there is more to it, but this is the core of the issue.

      earbin,

I know you honestly believe what you are saying, but it is a load of horse manure. It is backwards thinking that will only sink us deeper and deeper into debt. You can raise taxes all you like, the people with money do not need to stay and pay them, they have the option of operating elsewhere and they will. The reason why people are hording money today is the uncertainty of tomorrow. You can ignore that fact but when the very people doing the hording are telling you this it seems silly.

      Fightingamerica,

I understand his position, thanks. But the truth lies somewhere between you and earbin’s positions. Simply cutting taxes is not enough either. We MUST cut the budget and we must also relax regulations, which is something Cain also supports. The spending is out of hand, if we revamp SS and Medicare half the battle is won right there. Cut the federal government back down to ~25% of GDP and we are golden. We do not need to eliminate entitlements, just clean them up and make them sane. Cut the corruption. And pay China back the 2 billion we owe them and be done with it.

Both sides are so caught up in their ideologies, but the problems are not that hard.

All songs are poems. But not all poems are sung. The first Christian hymns were the psalms, which are called both songs and poetry.
