Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has faced increased criticisms over the last 24 hours in regards to his tenure at the firm Bain Capital, with many accusing him of being a corporate raider who destroyed jobs rather than created them.

At a Chamber of Commerce breakfast in Nashua Monday morning, the former Massachusetts governor provided his critics a now-viral soundbite that falls in line with that criticism. He said, in part, “I like being able to fire people.” But were Romney’s words taken out of context? Some seem to think so.

Here are the remarks:

While recognizing that the “I like being able to fire people” quote will be taken out of context, Washington Post blogger and MSNBC contributor Jonathan Capehart notes that the unforced error and look on Romney’s face when he says it “is right out of evil-boss-man central casting.”

Still, fellow WaPo blogger Greg Sargent thinks the criticism is unfair:

Dems are jumping up and down this morning because, as Taegan Goddard puts it, they’ve “caught him on video saying he likes firing people.”

Let me go on record saying it would be misleading and unfair to clip the video in question in order to quote Romney this way: “I like being able to fire people.”

But what has been lost in Romney’s remarks is the point he was trying to make about preserving choice in health insurance, which is clear when you read the entire “fire people” quote:

“I want individuals to have their own insurance. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means that if you don’t like what they do, you could fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me. You know, if someone isn’t giving the good service, I want to say, I’m going to go get someone else to provide this service to.”

It‘s worth pointing out that this wouldn’t be the first time that Romney has been involved in a context debate. Back in November he released an ad with a potentially damning Barack Obama quote. It was eventually found that Obama was quoting Republican John McCain at the time.

Romney’s comments, even if out of context, are ill-timed considering a new DNC attack ad along with a the trailer recently released by Newt Gingrich’s super PAC alleging that “When Mitt Romney Came to Town(with Bain)” jobs were lost.

      Kind of interesting. Romney drew first blood in Iowa with his super Pac‘s despite all of Gingriche’s pleas for the Republican Candidates to play nice in the sand box. Romeny got caught in an outright lie saying he had had not seen any of his super pac adds and then in the same paragraph stated he saw one and thought it was not that bad. What a lying politician he is and Newt called him out and watched him sink himself. Only those of us who are engaged will know. The rest who watch from time to time and only hear what the lame stream media states have no idea. They just know that the “Republicans” are rooting for Romney. Of course most americans don’t know that most establishment Republicans are progressives who like the status quo and want to keep it going that direction for their own monetary gain. Seriously, the lame stream media is rooting for Romney and that does not give any republican pause. Obama thinks he can beat Romney. He’s scared to death to deal with a Gingrich or Santorum or Perry. If your company is failing, you are not talent that should be given millions to hang around. Cut your losses and find someone who can run the company or country. Geez. How hard is that?

    I love the way everyone loves to twist Romney’s words. IF you listen to or read all of what he said, he said he wants to get rid of providers who provide lousy service. Don’t we all? A good manager or consumer gets rid of lousy employees or seeks providers who are competent. This whole idea of not firing lousy workers is like giving baseball trophies to every kid, even the one who warms the bench. I agree with Romney 100% about getting rid of providers who do not serve me well.

    MItt’s comments were spot on. Being able to “fire” a service provider is the heart of the free market! In other words, if a company is not meeting your expectations, you can choose to use another company that will – thereby ‘firing’ the first company.

    The only tool the democrats have against Mitt is class warfare. I can’t believe Newt is joining in.

      This is the same garbage Rush Limbaugh spews literally every single day. This is merely wishful thinking on his part, because he wants to portray himself as the “true conservative” against the “establishment.” He has, of late, found himself defending his self-contradiction, as it has been pointed out that he supported Romney last cycle. He said, “well that is because McCain was the one to beat.”

      So there you have it. Rush Limbaugh isn’t concerned with the best candidate; he is only concerned with beating the candidate that he feels the “establishment” wants, which actually just translates to the candidate who is most likely to win.

      Are you saying you’re entitled to a full time job and health benefits from a private company?

      If you’ve ever owned a company (small or large) then you would realize that you run a business to make a profit, not to give people benefits. Benefits are exactly like the word implies – a benefit of working at that employer rather than another. If a company chooses to give benefits to attract better qualified employees, then so be it… but you are NOT ENTITLED to ANYTHING from your company.

      If you don’t like what they offer, then go work somewhere else.

    WE NEED SOMEONE THAT IS READY TO DO THIS… SHRINKING # OF GOVT WORKERS

    Though it will hurt him politically, we need someone like this. Someone that is ready to fire a ton of government workers. When Romney dissolved two state departments in Massachusetts he had to lay off hundreds of government workers, which saved Massachusetts millions.

    We need someone who is willing to shrink our government and Romney sounds like the one to do it.

    Then again this is not what he meant but this is how his opponents will say. he needs to think before he speaks, especially running for president.

    Does it mean he and czars will work for free if he is elected Pope? The present czars fired congress by proxy maybe the government drones will be next.

    I totally agree with what Mitt is saying! I had to do that with a lawn service who were supposed to mow my lawn weekly and did well on that for a month. Then they didn’t come at all even tho I paid each week when the service was done—you don’t show up to do the job after about three weeks, the job was taken away from them because they didn’t do what was promised! That is what Mitt did and you have every right to fire someone if they are not doing their job–except for the union idiots who do whatever they want and when they want to–if they worked for me, I would do exactly what I did with the lawn service!

      I think anyone in charge of any organization would want the ability to get rid of those who are counter-productive. I hope that when he wins the White House, he starts firing a lot of people, starting with the czars. Go get’em Mitt!!!
