Did Mitt Romney Really Say He‘s ’Not Concerned About the Very Poor’?

Did Mitt Romney Really Say Hes Not Concerned About the Very Poor?

CNN

On what was supposed to be a victory lap coming off his decisive Florida win, Mitt Romney made headlines Wednesday morning with a comment that he’s “not concerned about the very poor.”

“I’m in this race because I care about Americans. I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there,” Romney said on CNN. “If it needs repair, I’ll fix it. I’m not concerned about the very rich, they’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of the America, the 90 percent, 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling.”

CNN host Soledad O’Brien sounded surprised at his remark and asked him to clarify.

“I think there are lots of very poor Americans who are struggling who would say that sounds odd,” O’Brien said. “Can you explain that?”

“Well you had to finish the sentence, Soledad. I said I’m not concerned about the very poor that have a safety net, but if it has holes in it I will repair them,” Romney said. “The challenge right now — we will hear from the Democrat party the plight of the poor. And there’s no question it’s not good being poor and we have a safety net to help those that are very poor.”

“You choose where to focus,” he added. “You can focus on the rich — that’s not my focus — you can focus on the very poor — that’s not my focus. My focus is on middle income Americans.”

He continued, “We have a very ample safety net and we can talk about whether it needs to be strengthened or whether there are holes in it. But we have food stamps, we have Medicaid, we have housing vouchers, we have programs to help the poor.”

As The Hill noted, this is not the first time Romney has drawn a contrast between helping the middle class and the poor, and he has previously referred to the “safety net” in place for those struggling the most. Nevertheless, his comments are sure to become a sound bite for his opponents, dovetailing with the narrative painting him as a heartless executive.

What Romney should have said…if he actually believed a word the founding fathers wisdom is…

Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated.
      Thomas Jefferson

“If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the general welfare, the government is no longer a limited one possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one subject to particular exceptions.” -James Madison

With respect to the two words “general welfare,” I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators. — James Madison, letter to James Robertson

Clearly…Romney either does not get this…or he does not believe it.

      Which one do you believe?

More words of wisdom that go right over Romney’s collectivist head…

James Madison, Feb. 3, 1792 “…It is to be recollected that the terms “common defence and general welfare,” as here used, are not novel terms, first introduced into this Constitution. They are terms familiar in their construction, and well known to the people of America. They are repeatedly found in the old Articles of Confederation, where, although they are susceptible of as great a latitude as can be given them by the context here, it was never supposed or pretended that they conveyed any such power as is now assigned to them. …If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare, and are the sole and supreme judges of the general welfare…they may a point teachers in every state, county, and parish, and pay them out of their public treasury; they may take into their own hands the education of children, establishing in like manner schools throughout the Union; they may assume the provision for the poor;… in short, every thing, from the highest object of state legislation down to the most minute object of police, would be thrown under the power of Congress; for every object I have mentioned would admit of the application of money, and might be called, if Congress pleased, provisions for the general welfare”

Who other than Ron Paul get this?

The best way to help the poor is to make it easier to enter and remain in the middle class. Taxes, regulations, etc. have become the largest obstacle in escaping poverty. Current policies help the poor stay poor.

I would love to know how someone making 10 dollars an hour at Walmart being unable to pay for an education or build wealth -because of all of their income goes to staying alive- is related to tax or regulatory burden. If we cut social programs to assist these people then their problems get even worse. Especially considering that I’ve seen many times people push that “47% of Americans don’t pay (income) taxes” is a problem for our country, I am left to wonder what the solution would be if not governmental assistance in bettering the individual through training, debt assistance, etc.

The problem, as I see it, is that gov’t assisstance has undermined American charity. I think we are capable of taking care of ourselves and our own. I think removing the tax-funded safety nets would go a long way in incentivizing people to aspire to higher things. If a friend or family member of mine is struggling financially, I try to help out in any I can. And I hope the same from them if I have to struggle. I think the great adventure of being an American is striking out on your own–being independent. That’s the fun and the danger of living in a free land. Your success is entirely your success and your failure is entirely your failure. Tough? You bet it is. But it’s the price we pay to breathe the free air.

Governor Mitt Romney seems poised to take the nomination for the presidential election primaries of the GOP, with a win in the Florida primaries tomorrow. It would take a miracle for Newt Gingrich to upstage the Governor in this race and maybe that is what Newt and his fans are counting on, as the polls have drastically and dramatically swung in favour of Governor Romney in the past few days. What the GOP electorate may need to consider is a few very salient factors that will come to play, should the governor win the Florida primaries and go on to win the nomination. Here are those factors. 1. Like Rush Limbaugh has said severally, it has become apparent that The Governor and his advisers employed a very new primaries’ campaign tactics. Usually, even with the DNC, the candidates ran to their base at the primaries and then pivoted to the center for the General election. What Mitt and his handlers have done is to run to the middle from the gitgo. The result has been what we can easily call a soap opera of a primary. In an interview last week, Reince Priebus, the GOP chairman said that hard fought primaries produce better candidates. I cannot disagree more with him. Show me a hard fought primary that has not left an indelible scare on the people and the candidates.. The political field today, is a product of the so called hard fought primaries of yesterday, and the hard fought primaries of today

I appreciate the reply. I can see the argument you’re making, and while I think the government should provide more of a “spring” rather than a “net”, I do think the current role it is playing is helpful. I don’t think anyone is happy to be poor, or is necessarily complacent. Programs like the Pell Grant are geared to help those who wish to better themselves get access to what they or their families could not provide.

I feel as though we can enjoy freedom within a country that is still actively trying to improve its less fortunate citizens. Strategically, I believe this is beneficial for our country. I admit though, there is a price to be paid for each step the government takes in controlling one thing or another.

Anyway I am glad to have read your reply.

Take away their credit cards, expensives cars, maids and live in housing comparable to their monthly take home pay.Than and only than can they understand the hardships that come with being poor.

First of all it is true Romney doesn’t care about the poor. Why would you expect any different from anyone born into a wealthy family like him, and having received every benefit that goes along with that?

Do you notice how now that Romney feels he has gotten the nomination locked up, he’s now talking about the middle class and his support for them? Don’t be fooled, Romney doesn’t care about the middle class but does care about the rich. That’s why his budget busting tax proposal benefits the richest at the expense of the poor and middle class. His proposal, in fact, would dramatically lower his taxes while raising taxes on the poorest, the people he’s not concerned with.

You‘re going to hear a lot about Romney’s support of the middle class. But don’t believe it.

Americans working at wallmart getting $10 an hour spend everything to stay alive? Your joking right? Less than 6% of income is what Americans pay for food. Most of their income goes towards entertainment, to include booze and tobacco. $10 an hour is actually pretty good money for the type work they do, it is more than I make.

“The transformation of a contented and silent Majority into an irascible and
vocal Majority will break many conventions in the United States and in
other developed nations as incontrovertible evidence piles up weekly and
perhaps daily over coming months that the status quo is broken for young
and for old, as well as for workers and investors alike,” he warns.

Ortel foresees that civil unrest will intensify in the United States and in
other developed nations that have been following ineffective, re-
distributive economic paths for decades, including the creation of elaborate
European-style social welfare programs providing extensive government-
funded benefits to a wide range of increasingly dependent constituencies.

“In our view, the stage has already been set for continuation of protests
that first began to surge in 2010,” he writes. “Some will manage to contain
their activities to peaceful protests. However, we believe the far more likely
scenario is that violence will result, especially in the United States where
the wider population has more ready access to weaponry and where mobs

well if you think about it, the rich and middleclass provide the safety net for the poor, and it looks like the middleclass is starting to disintegrate into the poor themselves, so the very few rich people are the only ones left providing the safety net for the poor in which is increasing now. the rich can only take care of so many people..

Dannyo, care to provide reasoning, or are you happy under the bridge, troll? This goes to the rest of the blips here without anything to contribute to the conversation.

Speaking as a college instructor, the safety net that needs to be repaired is education, not welfare. It’s a giving fish versus giving fishing lessons kind of thing. Our people are very hungry… for knowledge. It‘s too bad it’s going to get worse even under Obama.

The notion that the middle class needs more help than the very poor is just plain stupid. Think about it–following that logic, it should be responsible to allow the middle class to transform into the very poor. Problem solved! Romney is pandering, counting on the ‘very poor’ to stay disenchanted at home on election day, and his numbers are grossly overestimating the middle class.

In short, Mitt Romney gaffes harder than Joe Biden.

Obama could throw $10 trillion worth of negative ads on our candidate and it will NEVER sway my vote towards Obama. “We have a very ample safety net and we can talk about whether it needs to be strengthened or whether there are holes in it.”

      WTH? Talk about strenthening it?

How about talking about the fact that nowhere in the Constitution does it mention allowing the Federal government to pay money to the poor?

Seriously, until folks like you figure out that what Romney said was downright blind in light of the wisdom of the founders, the Republican party is lost.

Jesus said, that the poor would always be amongst us and Mitt Romney knows that.. He is worried about the middleclass because they are the ones whose taxes pay the bills and Obama has us so bankrupted somw of us will not live long enough to see this debt paid off. He should be worried about the middleclass more than any other class because.. they are the lifeline that makes America great. And how many are unemployed now? We will always have the poor and thats not just America thats everywhere. And what has America always done, we have taken care of our poor.. Not to mention all the money ever given to disaster area’s, given once from our taxes and then again given freely from our wallets, whether by giving to our churches or to some group of people raising money for such disaster. We are the most giving country ever! Its time to save America NOW. Vote out Obama, President spend spend! God help us!

Romney is concerned about the Middle class because this nation is losing the middle class. This country is turning into a 2 class system. You are either mega rich or you are poor and dependent on government programs like food stamps welfare and unemployment checks. The good jobs are going away. People with expensive college degrees can’t find work. 401K’s have been on a roller coaster ride due to QE1 and QE2.

In order to create good paying jobs that will help the middle class, we need to reduce corporate taxes, remove regulations and make the business environment competitive with other countries around the world…this in turn will help the wealthier business owners.
The needy and poor always have been taken care of in America, either through charity or govenment programs.

Mitt isn’t my first choice but I do agree with him on this subject. We have gone off the deep end from helping the poor from the 1930′s post-Depression to helping today’s poor. From social security to Medicaid to homeless shelters to emergency room healthcare, our poor is not only well taken care of the government programs have become a hotbed for corruption. I have seen the bills of what the govenrment pays on behalf of the poor and it is mind-numbing. One poor person racks up hundreds of thousands of dollars EACH YEAR……..far more than they ever would have contributed in their lifetime. Our country cannot sustain the cost from the wealth generated from those making money off of the poor.

Mitt doesn’t have to be too concerned about losing many votes from his comment. The poor will vote Dem until they die. It has been ingrained in their minds that “Dems help the poor”. No matter how much one tries (and I surely have) there is absolutely no changing their minds about that.

And they would be poor again… Just like we will never change Afghanistan.. The poor will always be poor… Cuz it aint a financial issue, its a mental issue, a state of mind, a way of life, a condition that cant and wont ever change, and they like where they are… Just keep sending the checks, thank you Democrats….And you could also take away the money from the very wealthy, and in a year, they would have it all back…. Cuz , that too is a state of mind, a way of life, a disciplined work ethic…. PERIOD !

Amen Paperboy! I cant believe how much is being made of this comment and its misinterpretation by both the lefties in Obamas camp and the righties who can‘t stand the fact that Newt is a has been and that the average american citizen sees through the religious bigotry that Mike Huckabee started throwing around in 2008 and is alive and well amongst the ’Evangelical’ voters of today. They would vote for a serial adulterer and proven prevaricator as they demonstrated in South Carolina over someone whose true values are much closer to their own, albeit from a different religious denomination. Pathetic and sad. Anyway, the middle class needs to be the focus of this country for the first time in years. We own the small businesses that provide the vast majority of jobs in this land. We pay our taxes, we are involved in our communities, schools, churches. We keep this place rolling on and I am tired of being ignored, disrespected, and flat out despised, while being asked to fund the lives of those who are the source of the derision. Romney gets it, he understands the difference between the power of a State and the Federal Government and that States should have many more rights than people realize, while the Federal Government should not have what they do.
