Did MSNBC‘s O’Donnell Call RNC Chairman Steele a Black Minstrel Dancer?

Lachlan Markay of NewsBusters points out an odd statement from MSNBC‘s Lawrence O’Donnell on yesterday’s “Last Word”:
As the first congressional election during his party chairmanship approaches, Michael Steele is dancing as fast as he can trying to charm independent voters and Tea Partiers while never losing sight of his real master and paycheck provider, the Republican National Committee.
Did O’Donnell just effectively call RNC chairman Michael Steele a black minstrel dancer?
“I … am not a fan of ‘reading racial tea leaves just for political gain,‘ but O’Donnell’s statement … leaves very little room for interpretation,” says Markay:
Markay then uses the “R” word:
So a black man is dancing to appeal to voters while still miniding his Republican masters? I’ll have to check with Rev. Sharpton, but that sure sounds racist.

Posted on October 6, 2010 at 12:30pmHmmm., It seems the problem here is Markay’s. I see no racism.
Report Post »The same analogy could have been made about ANYONE in Steele’s position. Why? Because it’s true!
Lawrence O’Donnell is an “ EQUAL” condescending opiner.
He’s liberal, he’s democrat, and he knows better than YOU if you aren’t in his little club.
That’s the attitude
How else would he have landed a gig on M.S.N.B.C.?

Posted on October 6, 2010 at 11:26amAs much as I cannot stand this guy, he’s one of the most biased and ignorant people on the planet, I think its stretching it A LOT to say he was making some kind of racist remark. In fact, if the reporter that puts this together actually thought that O’Donnell was making a racist remark I would have to believe that the reporter is either overly sensitive to racial remarks, to the point of being irrational, or he/she is fanning the flames.
I’m probably one of the most anti-democrat, anti-progressive, anti-Obama people here, but come on, let’s stick to what is actually real…. not try to make something out of nothing.

They love to have Americans broken down into demographic pigeon-holes, makes us easier targets for election dollars and welfare slavery. Posted on October 6, 2010 at 12:13pmlol yeah thats racial…lol im more than sure as an employee to the company I work for, so long as they pay me the fair wages i get paid, I call them master. well maybe not master but so long as he holds my money i worked for he is pretty much my master, and that is the point he is trying to get across. And you guys say everything we say has to be racial, look at you trying to take everything out of context just to find anything regarding race. way to go hypocrits of America aka REPUBS
Report Post »Prospero
Posted on October 6, 2010 at 12:21pmYou might have an argument, Tess, if “dancing as fast as he can” was all that was said. It’s foolish to strip away context, and then argue from a self-inflicted vaccuum.
Once you add the “being paid” by his “master” so as to maintain the actual context, the phrase you cite has a pretty clear racist inflection.

Posted on October 6, 2010 at 1:39pmThere is absolutely nothing racial about this comment. The word “master” is used interchangeably with the word “boss” ie your employer. Not once did he say ‘“white master”.

Posted on October 6, 2010 at 2:01pmWell, seems rather biased to me. Michael Steele does represent the Republican Party. He was voted in, so why shouldn’t he represent it? Stupidity of a so-called journalist. Does he say the same thing in a derogatory way about the Democrats and their dancing trying to turn around the tide against them. No, they are just insulting and do not make any points with truthful people.

Posted on October 6, 2010 at 2:22pmActually “dancing as fast as I can” is a reference to the title of an autobiographical story about drug addiction. The reference is to frantic activity. It has no more to do with dancing than “I’m running late” has to do with running.

Posted on October 6, 2010 at 10:04pmIt actually isn’t…In no way was race mentioned until you guys got a hold of the comment in this forum…Why is Race so quick to jump out of everything you people think…That’s what actually makes you Racist…The fact that race has nothing to do with this story or his comment completely slips past your small brains because race is always at the forefront of your thoughts when you see a person of color no matter who it is…You call Obama Kenyan and therefore not American…If you had any since you would know that all African Americans are descendants of Africa and therefore not originally American…Including the Uncle Toms you place in positions of sight to give the impression that your party relates to people of all cultures while simultaneously making slick racists comments under your breath…Case in point the Porch ***** of slavery times who was singled out and given a position of command over the other slaves because he was easily manipulated and thus most susceptible to deny his culture and people…Also you would know that none of you supposedly pure bred White folk are originally descended from America either…The only true Americans are Native Americans so you don’t fit or belong either and are as Un-American as you charge others for being…You stole this land and enforced your Government rules and regulations on its original inhabitants…Read a book and know your History.

If you read about progressive and socialist tools and agendas it is reasonable to assume that the comments reflect a desire to agitate racial anxiety. The ends justifies the means in their view. If a few pundits draw fire for race-bating or notorious attorneys throw their clients under the racial conflict bus, so be it, as long as the goals of the collective are met.
They want us angry about anything but the real issues. They want us talking about race or who they’re going to run in 2012. Please don’t let them hijack the discussion.
