Did NYC Police Commish Accidentally Reveal Fact in Colo. Shooting? Tells Media Shooter Painted Hair Red and Said He Was ‘The Joker’

(The Blaze/AP) — New York City’s police commissioner says the gunman in the Colorado movie theater rampage had painted his hair red and called himself the Joker — the villain from the Batman movies. But was he supposed to?

(Related: Suspect in ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Shooting Identified)

Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday that he had been briefed about the shootings that killed 12 and wounded nearly 60 others at a showing of the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises” at a suburban Denver theater.

Aurora Theater Shooter James Holmes Painted Hair Red, Told Cops He Was The Joker

James Holmes

Kelly and his spokesman did not say who briefed him, although in a press conference on Friday afternoon Aurora, CO, Police Chief Dan Oates said he used to work for New York law enforcement. He declined to comment on the information when asked by reporters. .

Audio of Kelly’s statements can be heard here.

“We have some information, most of it is public. It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was ‘The Joker,’ obviously the ‘enemy’ of Batman,” Kelly said.

Some have pointed out that in the 2008 Batman movie, “The Dark Knight,” The Joker’s hair was actually green not red.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates would not confirm the information about suspected gunman James Holmes, but confirmed he had spoken to Kelly. The two used to work together in New York.

CBS New York reports that witnesses said Holmes was dressed as a SWAT team member with a bulletproof vest when he burst through an emergency exit of the theater, dropped two canisters of unknown gas and opened fire. The mass shooting has left 12 people dead and roughly 51 wounded.

Holmes was eventually arrested in the parking lot of the movie theater and did not resist police. He reportedly told police he had explosives in his home.

FBI and Aurora police confirmed that Holmes’ apartment is “booby trapped” with canisters of fluid and wire triggers that they think could take “hours” or “days” to sort through, the Denver Post reports.

TMZ speculates that Holmes may have been trying to reenact a scene from “The Dark Knight” which features a scene where The Joker, played by the late Heath Ledger, wears a red wig before he demolishes a hospital with explosives. This can not be independently verified but the scene can be seen here:

Check back for updates — we will add video of Kelly’s comments as soon as it becomes available.

This “STORY” is incredibly poor ‘journalism’!!

The headline could have just as easily mentioned anyone instead of the NYC police commish. for example, insert: Glen Beck, or Obama, or Mahatma Ghandi or Rush, or well you get the freakin point!!

This “story” is nowhere else except for the blaze. Did the Blaze scoop the rest of the media? Or did the Blaze just create their own news for their own agenda??? BOING BOING!! THE BLAZE CREATED NEWS FOR ITS OWN AGENDA. THIS MY FRIENDS IS NOT JOURNALISM IT IS CALLED PROPAGANDA AND BSBSBSBSBSBSBSBSBSBS

Why did Ray Kelly even say anything about this? As far as I know, this happened in Aurora COLORADO, so why is the Chief of the NYPD holding a presser?

Ray Kelly should STFU and mind his own business. This has NOTHING to do with NY.

The legislators will cry for gun control When in fact the government is the biggest shipper of guns in the world from eric holder shipping illegal guns to mexico and our government shipping guns around the world. Not to mention the mind numbing evil movies Hollywood spits out on a regular basis. Its no different than pornography it is addictive. Thats why companies pay so much money for advertisments. Because it influences people. Just like movies . Legislate the crap that comes out of Hollywood.

Agree with everything you said. They can give guns to Mex. Cartel and that’s fine, but when they start wanting our guns, that another story. This was a tragic thing at the theater, but I seriously believe the caliber of outrageous, violent movies are a problem too.
Many die from one thing or another. Killed by cars, gang thugs, and they use all kinds of weapons. Guns are not the cause of that many deaths in America, but here are details of 98,000 deaths attributed to another cause:

“The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) seminal study of preventable medical errors estimated as many as 98,000 people die every year at a cost of $29 billion.1 If the Centers for Disease Control were to include preventable medical errors as a category, these conclusions would make it the sixth leading cause of death in America.”
Personally, I’m more afraid of being killed by a medical error than I am from someone with a gun. It’s only been a few years ago that the average was 90,000 each year
who died due to medical errors, wrong medication, Dr. error, etc.
This should be considered when talk begins again to outlaw guns………………….and the old saying, “that’s when only outlaws will have guns” and we’ll have no defense.

He thought he was the Joker.

He tod the police “I’m the Joker”.

He didn’t say “I’m Rush Limbaugh”.

If anyone, or any GROUP, is to blame…the blame should fall on Hollywood and the THOUSANDS of violent movies they have made.

Notice how, when these people recant their stories, they always say “I thought it was a movie”?

They never say “I thought I was listening to Rush Limbaugh”.

Hollywood isn’t the only one making violent stories. There are books, comics, video games and if you go back far enough, myths and legends. However, they don’t make people violent. Think about how many millions participate in those mediums today and DON’T go out on a killing rampage. Millions. The stories don’t make someone violent, there “crazy” makes them so.

Chief of Police, at the early press conference I saw, said they would not be releasing the mug shot. In retrospect, what the NY Chief said about the red hair, I suspect the shooter was made up like the Joker. The last thing needed is to have mug shot of the shooter looking like The Joker released. I believe that would have put an end to any plea of insanity, because that is the way it looks like it will go. The shooter is sane enough to have planned this, and that shows pemeditation for me.

The theatre was another ‘happy’, ‘safe’, “gun-free” zone. If at least one or two patrons were armed, the crazy gun man might have been stopped. You have a right to defend yourself, and if a private establishment disarms you, they have a responsibility to keep you safe, or protect you from harm, e.g., guards, security measures, etc. Self defense is a natural and private right. Justice Alito stated in Heller, “citizens must be permitted ‘to use [handguns] for the core lawful purpose of self-defense.’”

my friends all tease me for going to the movies armed. infact I go everywhere armed. God help everyone involved including the shooter’s family. this is awful we were going to go today to see this movie. with all the calls for gun control on this I would like to mention, if only someone was alert and armed this amount of devastation could have been drastically reduced. bullet proof vests are not sufficient against proper ammo and there is always the ability to hit weak areas think of the song head shoulders knees and toes. Prayers for all, and I mean no insult to all there, just saying folks arm yourself, learn your weapon and stay alert. It isn’t fail safe but its a lot better than the alternative

I was thinking the same thing. Once my state Maryland goes “Shall Issue”, I’m staying armed at all times for the purpose of self defense. When in private establishments, I will not disarm myself, unless the owner, or his representative, personally tells me to leave. If a public place or business is a gun-free zone, and provides no adequate security, I will take my money elsewhere.

My 90 year old grandmother lives alone on her farm though and she keeps at least one (if not more in some cases) loaded weapon every room of the house and in her car. I love it! If he was paid there would have been clear evidence linking him to the tea party. They would have made sure of that. Frames dont happen with gaping holes.

No, ABC jumped so fast to accuse the Tea Party because of Trayvon. They saw that in that situation, even though there was absolutely no evidence towards the issue being race related, they managed to make it LOOK like there was.

ABC probably figured that the new standard, especially with the election looming and everyone pulling out all the cheap shots to try to take down Romney, was that everything would always be blamed on Obamas opponents. They wanted the exclusive, first break on it, and they figured that no one else was going to bother with EVIDENCE that he was a tea partier, because no one ever bothered with EVIDENCE in the Trayvon/Zimmerman situation. So they decided to jump the gun and release that he was an alleged “tea partier” before anyone else could.

It’s on the internet. A link was posted in one of these stories by someone. That’s where I read about his hair being dyed and him saying he was the Joker, an enemy of Batman.
Something is fishy, though. How did he get in an emergency exit door without walking through the theater first? Those doors have an alarm on them, don’t they? Where did he get all the SWAT team equipment and explosives, not to mention the guns without triggering a red flag?

It doesn’t work that way. When you prop those doors open they trigger an automatic alarm that sounds both within the building (somewhere, or all over…depends on how it’s wired, but either the staff or everyone knows). That alarm goes directly to the police who were somehow not notified until the violence unfolded. Unless something horrible happened like the wire was bad or the door alarm wasn’t on(never tested, wore out, was fried by a surge, was never a complete wire…whatever…but they’re required to test after install), the police knew the moment that door was opened; even just to prop it open.

The other question remains. His gear was NOT typical of surplus stores. He had swat equipment, where did he get ahold of that?

I hope he does fry, but I would love to know what the story is behind this. Where his motivations came from, who supplied him, how it was possible for him to break in and why they police weren‘t notified if that’s how he actually broke in.

Something doesn’t feel right with this.

Congrats, you win the “I grew up in the 1970′s and forgot times change” award. Nice job dumbass.

Those old theaters you used to sneak in? Where no alarm went off, and no police showed up when you propped open the door for your cheap friends? Ya, they either never rigged the wires to the circuitry to trip when it was opened, or the manager turned it off because of the constant hassle of dealing with teens. Not so much anymore. I have yet to see a teen sneak in through the fire exit, and knowing several theater managers and people who work at multiple new theaters…it’s rather uncommon, particularly when most are hurting for ticket sales.

The helicopter view makes it pretty clear the theater is relatively new, at least in the past 20 years.

Oh, and codes change too, as well as inspection requirements for police departments. Still, you make a valid point, just next time, try to make it without sounding like your balls are in a vice.

He must have paid admission, went through the exit door, taped the latch so he could come back in. Put on his gear, got his guns and came back through the door.

Personally, I think people get these ideas from the freakin movies that are out there.
Responsible people who take classes to handle guns are the ones we wished had been in that theater last night. If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns and we’ll be totally defenseless.
How can an honest person defend themselves if there are no guns to retaliate the thugs who carry guns for crimes? They’re trying to take guns away from honest people every time something like this happens. Then we can’t defend ourselves from the criminals. How fair is this? We should always have a fighting chance.

Guns in the wrong hands is scary, like the Fast & Furious thingie, and our government
approved of this debacle. They arm criminals and try to stop the honest person from having any defense at all.
If you read the paper, cars kill all the time, knives kill, baseball bats kill, geeze you fools it’s not the weapon that kills, it’s the crime ridden thugs that kill. At least
let honest people have a chance to defend ourselves from the criminals.

I don’t think the training responsible gun owners have, covers dark smoke-filled rooms with 100+ people running around. I can see the advantage in a situation in broad daylight, but I could imagine it making things worse in this case.
