Did Obama Exaggerate Truth About Giffords Opening Her Eye for the ‘First Time’?

You may have seen a few viral links this morning that seemed to indicate that President Obama may not have been totally accurate in his description of Rep. Giffords opening her eyes for the “first time.”

A number of sites pointed to a Sunday article in the Tucson Sentinel:

Giffords is in a drug-induced coma in intensive care. Doctors frequently awaken her to check her responsiveness, and she could open her eyes and respond to simple commands Sunday – an encouraging sign, said Rhee said.

I decided to go back and re-watch the doctor’s news conference on Sunday.  I couldn’t find that exact statement.  Since the Sentinel report was the only citation being referenced, I thought perhaps the reporter may have made an error.  The same article said this:

Giffords cannot speak because she is on a ventilator, and cannot see because of the area of her injury and the surgery requires her eyes be kept closed, the doctors said.

I thought perhaps there was some confusion over her pre-surgery responses and how she was being treated after surgery.

A tweet by the paper’s editor also seemed curious:

The Blaze contacted the editor and received this response:

We absolutely stand behind Sunday’s report. But that’s not to imply that the president was “lying” or wrong in his statement last night.

Sometimes the truth is more complex than soundbites can handle.

Look for a report based on this morning’s medical briefing soon.

The paper recently posted a report on the medical briefing today:

“We’re seeing spontaneous eye opening,” said Dr. Peter Rhee.

Giffords was opening her eye for as long as 15 minutes at a time Thursday, doctors said.

Giffords has flickered her eyes in response to commands before, said Rhee and Dr. G. Michael Lemole.

ABC’s Jake Tapper explains it this way:

Doctors today provided a simple explanation: Wednesday was the first time Giffords opened her eyes on her own, which Giffords’ neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Lemole Thursday called “a major milestone.”

“When we examine patients, particularly in this state we have to ‘wake them up,’ give them some stimulus, and with that stimulus they might crack their eyes,” Lemole said today. “That’s very different from speaking to someone and having them open their eyes, or having them open their eyes spontaneously in response to familiarity.”

“Eyes” in the case of Giffords is actually just “eye” since her right eye is bandaged.

The president’s remarks were meant, the White House says, to convey that she had opened her eyes on her own for the first time.

So while the President may have been wrong about her opening her eyes for the “first time,“ doctors seem comfortable with his account to the nation of what they consider to be a ”major milestone.”

    My “curious tweet” meant that we’ve spent countless hours over the past 5 days clearing up mistakes and misinformation by other news organizations.

    We were the first to report that Giffords was not dead, but indeed alive. (Nat’l media continued reporting she had been killed for quite some time after.)
    I believe we were the first to report that she was going into surgery.
    Other outlets reported that other staffers were dead, using their names. We debunked those rumors.
    We were the first to report the names of all six who were killed.
    We were the first to post the photo of the man who turned out to be an otherwise uninvolved cabdriver.
    We were the first to debunk the reports that the Loughner family was not “barricaded” in their home and refusing entry to the FBI.
    We definitively cleared up the rumor that someone fired back at the shooter.
    Etc., etc.

    The one report we did have to correct was using a photo of a young man in a blue sweatshirt and naming it as Loughner. It’s not him in the picture, but that identification was confirmed to us by multiple law enforcement sources at the time.

    Our report on Sunday perhaps should have said “she could open her eyes in respond to simple commands” to be more clear. But the meaning of our report is still evident as originally reported.

    Previously, Giffords could open her eyes in response to commands. Dr. Rhee said Wednesday morning that many times her reactions to commands were also in response to a sternal rub, which he described as “very painful,” at same time as a verbal command.

    She has been unable to see, because her eyes have frequently been covered except when doctors were performing response tests. Her right eye remains covered.

    As to not finding that statement on the news conference video, both Drs. Rhee and Lemole have spoken with TucsonSentinel.com reporters outside the formal briefings on a daily basis.

    While I’m not an editorial writer (as a news organziation, we don’t take sides on issues; we let people talk amongst themselves), I wouldn’t say the president was “lying” in his description. After all, a both rousing and somber speech to a gathering of thousands of stunned Tucsonans isn’t exactly a medical briefing, and Obama isn’t a medical doctor.

    Wednesday was indeed the first time that Gabby opened her eyes and kept them open. She did it on her own.

    Was the president’s statement overblown, as many are saying?

    People are entitled to their own assessment of that, but the opinion of one of the doctors treating the congresswoman is that “this is a major leap forward, this is a major milestone.”

    “In medicine we like to attribute it to what we do, but a lot of what happens is beyond our control,” he said. “We would be wise to acknowledge miracles.”

    Granmaof5, I do the same thing! When ever I hear him speaking, I switch channels because I don’t want to hear his lies! One other thing, you know how he’s supposedly is moving from the Left to more center? Don’t believe him, he’s a snake in the Grass!….. Yes I want the President to suceed, but I also see the Evil side of him! If he gets re-elected in 2012, he‘ll go right back to the far left and he won’t care one bit about the right, and or our rights!… He’s Evil!….. Not what is real, but what they want it to be. That type of thinking has never worked and never will.     He’s the Savior; can’t you see Obama is performin miracles!…. I was thumbing through channels, msnbc was talking about Obama’s speech last night! They were referring to the Left and Right and how Obama’s speech was trying to quell the controversy! They basically stated it was both parties fault that all this bickering started! Everything I have seen, was that the Left was Blaming everthing on the right! It seems funny that they would say stuff like this considering MSN, and MSNBC and there people were the first to point fingers!

    Obama telling a lie isn’t really news and using it for his campaign speech/memorial rally isn’t all that surprising, either. I am glad for the Congresswoman and her husband that she is continuing to improve. I will be happy to hear that Loughner gets the death penalty.

    In the case of these reports of Grifford’s condition, I will take the doctors who attend her with more credibility than others. The one thing is that pundits, sound biters, and extremists will twist these bits and peices around to their own advantages and agendas. If they state a fact was wrongly given, and then use corrected and accurate information, that is one thing, to fabricate matters or twist them is another kettle of fish completely (or electric eels if you wish to use them instead.)

      It CAN occur that a person comes out of a semi-unconscious state, for example, if you call their name. That does not qualify as “opening your eyes.” Frankly, I agree that we on the right should not spin. Let’s leave the fact-twisting to the putrid left.

      In the past, I have had to FORCE myself to LQQK him….AND in the eye.
      You can see true evil and deception at work. You can actually see him thinking and plotting the direction of his words, AS HE SPEAKS ….and depending on the reception OR rejection he recieves from his audience, he RAMPS UP the rherotic.

      And, it is done PURPOSEFULLY to cause friction and contraversay….He’s smart enough to KNOW that IF he says things that people DO NOT LIKE – it pulls THEM INTO THE SPOTLIGHT – and LABELS THEM AS STANDING IN THE WAY OF PROGRESS – which he then gets a BOOST IN POPULARITY.

      If this speech effected your opinion of Obama either way then you haven’t been paying attention for two years anyway. The best thing we can do is pray for Griffords and the other families and insist the politicians get back to the job we sent them to DC to do.
      I do find it interesting however that Griffords sided with some Repubs to try and get control of Arizona’s illegal immigrant problem and has been frustrated by not being able to get most of the people there yesterday to come. Where’s the news on this story?

      Then there is the fact that the Tuscon article kept disappearing for some reason but others kept reposting it.

      I’m sorry if I sound “conspiratorial” but Obama’s thing when campaigning seems to be to sound “messianic.” He obviously was kicking off the 2012 rerun campaign last night, as it seemed more about him and the show than the victims.

      It is my understanding that Gabby has been able to respond to commands (per every interview done with the neurosurgeon from the very beginning) and as reported by her aide who was with her before the paramedics arrived…she has ALWAYS been able to “respond” to stimulus…the doctors have been using an agent called curare (or something like it) to induce a “false” coma…they have told us all along that they have been bringing her in and out of this state from pretty much the day after her surgery…I have personal experience with this drug…they are SLOWLY bringing her AROUND and with each lowering of the dosage this is what you can expect (more like hope for) in order to see just where she is at…that being said, there is no reason to believe that Mr. Obama’s visit or the visit of her friends was not coordinated with her medication reduction time in order to make her more aware of their visit…I can’t think of a better way to “stimulate” her reactions than to have her surrounded by her friends…as far as the Obama thing goes…who cares? Unfortunately he lies so much that it is difficult to know where the truth begins and ends…that’s his fault…we need to continue to pray for her and pray for her husband that he will be able to be the support that she is going to need.

      I can‘t believe the number of conservative people who are expressing positive comments over the President’s Tucson speech. In the first place, the speech should have been centered on courage, the American spirit, the will to overcome adversity, or any similar theme. His topic, “public discourse,” had nothing to do with any of the shooting victims or the deranged shooter. He might as well have read something on his teleprompter about terrorism, the war in Afghanistan, or the current recession. Secondly, we on the right did not bring up this idiotic blame game that was started by Paul Krugman and a number of other liberals immediately following the shootings. Public discourse, or rather the progressive liberals’ failure to pursue it, is their doing… not ours. And as for the tone of the “memorial ceremony,” does the name Paul Wellstone mean anything to you?

      Listened to your show tonight and could not believe my ears!!!! After all the times i heard you say “wake up America” and educate yourself and with all the educating you do on your show and you gave Obama pass on that horrific display of a so called memorial service you felt it was not his fault…Who are you kidding…You mean to tell me Obama did not know the itinerary and could not help what the crowed did.. ,or about the t shirts that were passed out….Please ,the American people are awake and we know what a fraud and fake this president is and i for one do not believe one single thing from his mouth…I really like what you are doing but lets start to call a spade a spade and Obama‘s’s actions speak louder than words…I can not believe he fooled you on this one……

      And the lie’s and propaganda go on.These new progressive’s have not one ounce of integraty.they would sell there damn mother’s if they thought Obama would get a bump from it.
      This has gone beyond sideshow,now it has become a spectacle,the Democrat‘s should be ashamed by now but I don’t think they have the ability to be ashamed anymore or imbarressed to be a part of the Obama circus.
      I have become ashamed to be an American with this president.I don’t have a problem at all saying this president is a “damn lier”.

      And as with ALL of it– Obama was using the crisis to build the Myth that he is the Messiah. Listen to what he said about this. how he repeated She opened her eyes. How he spoke of her as a near and dear familiar friend. “Gabby” hos he carefully suggested she opened her eyes when he was in the room
      for the first time (suggesting he was the reason?) The entire thing was a Socialist Scam by the seed of Satan.

      Come on, this guy makes John edwards, Dan Quayle, and let’s not forget the King, Bill Clinton look like alter boy’s. Anybody need babysitters for your 13 year old daughters?
