Did Ohio Dem Have a ‘Macaca Moment’?

The term “macaca moment” (also spelled macaque) refers to an event in 2006 that derailed the re-election campaign of Virginia Senator George Allen. Allen’s use of the highly-charged, offensive term at a campaign event and the controversy that followed are credited with turning an almost certain re-election for the GOP Senator into a victory for Democrat Jim Webb. Will a politician in Ohio face a similar result following his insensitive and incendiary statements from the past weekend?
Social networking chats are a similar to a high-tech town hall meeting, allowing elected officials the ability to connect with the people they represent without having to face them. Ohio State Representative Bob Hagan was in one such social networking discussion with constituents over the weekend when he made what is being called a racist comment. Some the people in the “conversation” agreed with Hagan’s position on the union battle being waged in Wisconsin and headed to Ohio, others did not.
As the back and forth between Hagan and others in the discussion became a bit heated, with one poster saying;
“I’m guessing your from an entrenched area ripe with corruption. I don’t recognize your name as a Cuyahoga County resident, but I’m guessing you’re from the land of Traficant.”
Rep. Hagan’s reply;
The suburban Cleveland woman to whom that comment was directed has taken exception to it, calling Hagan’s use of Buckwheat racist. Hagan disagrees, and claims this is an attack from the Tea Party in an effort to make him look bad. That is an interesting position to take as it was Hagan who printed and used the word “Buckwheat” and suggested that a voter “take your personal shots, and shove them where the sun don’t shine.” In a follow-up interview Hagan has some choice words for both the Tea Party and his accusers;
“They are so full of —-. They’re so negative, these teabaggers.”
and
“I have no apologies for telling her to shove it where the sun don’t shine.”
So Mr. Hagan’s response to questions about his use of a potentially racially offensive term and a vulgar insult to voters is not to apologize for the insensitive behavior, but rather to pile on additional disrespectful and vulgar language. The term “teabagger” has been shown to be an offensive and distasteful insult that was frequently used on TV in an effort to marginalize the movement now-credited the sea change in last fall’s elections.
Bringing all of this back to the questionable word from Hagan’s online discussion. Here is the image that most Americans conjure up when they hear the word “Buckwheat.”
And from the UrbanDictionary – #1 definition of the word “Buckwheat” is not exactly flattering;

Posted on February 21, 2011 at 1:21pmOh the hypocrisy, when Allan made that comment about the ‘macaca’ he was just speaking gibberish. The progressive’s had no idea it was an insult to anyone. They had to hit the “dictionary of seldom used terms’ to find a negative to use to start their bashing campaign. That’s Media Matters job!
But ‘Buckwheat’ has been a common label since those ‘little rascals’ shorts of the 40′s, like ‘Keystone cops’. Everyone over 50 knows the meaning! But we all know now that Dems don’t have to pay taxes, up hold laws, or worry about being racist. They are just that much better, then those horrible tea party attendees. That’s why all those MSNBC host, can sit there and call anyone they want any derogatory name they can muster, and be proud of it.

The southern Democrats were the ones that threatened to sucede from the Union if Lincoln was elected Prez in 1860……they followed through on that threat since they knew Lincoln was a commited abolitionist and work tirelessly to reverse that wrong….it’s interesting to note that after the defeat of the Confederate States the southern democrats vowed to fight on by forming the KKK, a terrorist group that would target blacks and whites with the hopes of keeping people in check….that was pretty effective for 100 years more or less.

Posted on February 21, 2011 at 1:19pm@Nigel2 & @Insipid – point taken. To me it’s not as bad as “Uncle Tom”. That’s completely derogatory and it is very offensive to hear it. But growing up, my friends and I found plenty of funny things about Buckwheat, and you have to keep it in context with The Little Rascals. Even the little girl was imitating “women of that time” to an extent. Remember, part of the underlyinig humor was that the kids were MUCH smarter than they let on.

Posted on February 21, 2011 at 1:29pmWhile the characters of Buckwheat and Farina were grossly stereotyped, the Rascals showed that white children could easily be together with black children. None of the kids were ever mean to Buckwheat and Farina, making them the endless brunt of jokes, racist name-calling, and cruel pranks.
The same with the black chef in the Three Stooges. That poor guy always ended up suffering for the Stooges’ mishaps and incompetence. Again, he was never a target for maliciousness. I still can’t watch those episodes, most notably with the Stooges as plumbers, without feeling sorry for that poor chef getting all but drowned.
Also, those series were made during the Depression. The idea of a black man having a job (both in reality and for the episodes) was, in a sense, a liberal concept for the time. Heck, the Stooges themselves were all Jewish, and had to use stage names (Moe Howard’s real name was Moses Howerstein, if I recall correctly).
We came a long way since those times, only to regress again. This time it’s a Dem, and I hope he’s called to account for it.

“A statesman is supposed to think of today, tomorrow and the future. I’m a human being. I am prone to make mistakes. This one was a mistake,” Poitier said.
Poitier also said he was considering a call to the White House to apologize.
It’s no excuse for saying it but the difference is after saying it, he realized that it was a mistake to say something like that and promptly apologized for it unlike the hypocrat here. Instead of saying “Ya know what that was wrong of me to say I’m sorry” he instead continued to insult and act as if he did nothing wrong. That is the big difference. SO your argument is stupid and pretty much baseless. Slink away Tifosa because you are in over your head here at the Blaze.
