President Obama‘s speech alleging that business owners didn’t build their own businesses and aren’t responsible for their own success has become a lightning rod among his opponents, and an awkward subject among his supporters. So polarizing is the speech that it has attracted enough refutations to fill a full-length book, just on the subject of that one speech.
However, most of those refutations have focused on the idea that businesspeople aren’t responsible for their own success. This isn’t surprising, as that premise is the most blatantly ridiculous part of the argument. However, practically no one has asked whether the President’s argument adds up, even if you accept the idea that businesses aren’t responsible for their own success, which has given the Left cover as long as they can cower behind that self-evidently absurd premise.
Until now. One writer at Pajamas Media, calling himself “zombie” (in spite of evidently having a fully functional brain), has written an epic takedown of the President’s speech, dissecting every single piece of the argument with a scalpel and showing that it simply does not add up, no matter how much you torture the logic. Highlights of Zombie’s takedown follow:
When Obama implied at the Roanoke, Virginia rally that some businessmen refuse to pay for public works from which they benefit, he presented a thesis which, like a three-legged stool, relies on three assumptions that must allbe true for the argument to remain standing:
1. That the public programs he mentioned in his speech constitute a significant portion of the federal budget;
2. That business owners don’t already pay far more than their fair share of these expenses; and
3. That these specific public benefits are a federal issue, rather than a local issue.
If any of these legs fails, then the whole argument collapses.
For good measure, we won’t just kick out one, we’ll kick out all three.[...]
OK. Fine. Let’s absolutely concede this point to Obama and Warren: There are some government activities that benefit us all, including business owners.
And for the sake of argument let’s just allow for a moment that the federal government is the best, most efficient and only supplier of these benefits. You win, Elizabeth and Barack.
But having conceded this central point, let us now ask the key follow-up question, which is the first leg of their three-point hypothesis: What percentage of the federal budget is devoted to these universally beneficial public works?[...]
What Obama and Warren are really stating is this:
Only one-fourth of your federal tax dollars go to projects and programs that benefit the general public and entrepreneurs; the other three-fourths are essentially a complete waste, or are at best optional.[...]
So yeah, I agree with Obama: Let’s slash the federal budget by 75%, and only fund services and programs that directly serve the public good.[...]
Obama and Warren have intentionally conflated local taxes withfederal taxes. In most localities across the country, public education, police and firefighters, and street repair are primarily paid for by property taxes, local sales taxes, and state taxes. Federal grants can supplement local funds, but rarely is a school district or a police department propped up entirely with federal money.
So if we revisit Obama’s and Warren’s speeches, they’re actually making an argument for increased local taxes. And yet they and their audiences somehow imagine that the arguments given are a legitimate rationale for increased federal taxes.[...]
We should thank President Obama for finally revealing the central justification for his economic policy. Now that we see what’s at the heart of his fiscal philosophy, we can demonstrate that he has only ended up proving the opposite of what he intended.

What the PRESIDENT said was that businesses didn’t build the highway, communications, shipping, airports, transportation, schools, etc. infrastructure that supports businesses of all levels. In fact we have some “forward” thinking governors who believe that giving tax breaks to companies, leaving no money to replace aging infrastructure is a good strategy. And it is a good short terms strategy. Makes them look good in the short term while sticking the bill on the next governor. Kinda like the baby boomers sticking their children with their Federal deficits.

That the public programs he mentioned in his speech constitute a significant portion of the federal budget; NO clearly the Defense and Medicare budgets that clearly benefit private defense contractors, medical equipment companies and pharmaceutical companies is the biggest portion. So you see they get quite a lot of the federal spending.

Local hospitals were built with Hill Burton money, Federal highway money goes to every state, federal money flows into every level of education. Federal research grants and DOD spending has been the genesis or prime developer of many advanced technologies. Federal contracts assisted in the dramatic growth of many large corporations. IBM, EDS, ATT, etc.

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 10:47amJROOK; Government didn’t build any of those that you listed, private industry did in other words government can’t do anything without the private sector (unless you want to government to start using low wage and/or slave labor as in China) and most of that list is from state and local taxes paid(mainly from private businesses) to companies that had the capability already to do the job. You talk as if the Federal Government is a monolithic entity that makes all things possible just by it being there and the private sector would still be in the horse drawn era if it weren’t for the generosity of the government. The one thing government can do that private industry is not allowed to do under the Constitution is emniment domain. I looked at all the infrastructure in our area other than the interstate it was all built and is still owned by private industry, most of the roads in our area were laid down by the landowners to be later improved by the local government when they had the funds available and was approved by the PEOPLE (this includes private industry) of the area.

He started off talking about himself, his campaign, and how appreciative he was of those in the crowd who had worked to help him. Then he mentioned the Colorado shooting. I am impressed that he is staying on message and keeping it simple about the massacre. What amazes me at the moment is the crowd clapping while hooting and hollering as he finishes certain statements. Something is just not right about some of these people.

Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

If they take it down to the family restaurant owner, or the garage repair shop, etc. and explain in clear language what punishing these businesses will do for the general public then they may just get through to the ignorant voter. This is not about 1% versus 99%. By overtaxation on business you either drive people out of business and workers out of jobs or you inflate the prices the business charge you to make up for their increased costs. We, as a country, need to pull together and not be divided based upon who is more successful. Obama can only attact the losers and the ignorant. Republicans need to be more INFORMATIVE and CLEAR! You are absolutely right!

While Obama‘s statements should’ve been a political suicide, Romney’s lack of conviction and determination to win, can mean only one thing – there is a foul play and the candidate is there just to make pretense.
I believe Romney doesn‘t want to win so either he’s afraid to inherit this job or the source of his fear stems from a threat of some sort…If there is such a threat, it means he can’t even get out but must make sure he loses. If this is true, all the IRS and other charges won‘t kick him out of the race but only make sure he will look ’dirty’ enough to scare the voters.
The other option is that I’m wrong but then, since the president is also the Commander-In-Chief, how can a spineless man who can’t even run a reasonable fighting campaign for the position, command a platoon, let alone the whole army?!

OTOH, Romney seems to be merely ACTING the role of handsome, rich, candidate. He’s never had to fight for anything, doesn’t know how to fight, doesn’t need to win, and has nothing to lose. He’s just going through the motions against Obama, who’s in it for real and will do and say ANYTHING to win.
This election is just a re-run of the 2008 drama in which McCain played the Republican candidate. Future Americans will be astonished that so many of us were duped and manipulated by so few.

Obama and the progressives believe that the collective is supreme and that the individual exists to serve it . They believe that the government is the proper arbiter of what the collective thinks and demands from the individual. They believe that the individual is dependent on the government. The collective has all rights and grants them to the individual as they believe is proper. The collective determines what is appropriate behavior and mandates the individual conform and now can actually tax him if he doesn’t. The collective owns all property and allows you to possess what they believe is proper and may take away what you think is yours if it serves the collective will. Obama has been telling us that he believes in the collective over the individual all along. His comments about collective salvation, social Justice, redistribution, fair share, etc. No one quite understood. It all seemed so esoteric, like some kind of philosophical ideology that was just beyond our comprehension. He has finally expressed his belief in a manner that every American can identify with and therefore understand. Obama has explained how you (the individual) don’t even own credit for your own achievements. Not for managing to acquire a home, not for advancing in your job or profession, not for starting a business, NOTHING. The collective deserves the credit & the proceeds.

You are absolutely right about “The debate and the opposing positions between Obama & Romney are about the collective vs the individual.” I used to live in Moscow (1 year) and learned so much–half the people who think socialism or collectivism is a good thing for people would change their minds quickly if they would live in that type of country.
A good way to illustrate the difference in the way of thinking is by looking at how letters to individuals are addressed–then make up your own mind.
Letters to people in the US which honor the individual look like this:
Your name
Your street address
Your city, State
Your country
Letters to people in Russia which honors the collective are addressed like this:
Your country
Your State (region),
Your City
Your street address
Your name
Which government do you want in charge of your life? The one that puts you first or the one that puts everything else before you?

Posted on July 20, 2012 at 5:25pmYou are wrong about no one understanding the Obama Agenda…GB and a lot of us here (who signed up quite a while ago) has this agenda pegged more than 2 years ago…..no one back then would even entertain the thought (in the MSM and in conservative radio) but as the clues and evidence mounted GB and those of us who smelled a giant rat were and are vindicated now that the obvious is plain to see.

Posted on July 19, 2012 at 9:51pmI agree that this argument cuts off Obama’s arguments before they begin, but let’s take it a step further. NO government has ever built a road. They may legislate and appropriate, but they hire private companies to build the roads. Roads are built only because someone took the initiative to invent the methods that make roads durable and strong. On the second point, yes there are some teachers that help, but the public school system has absolutely failed. Saying that teacher have something to do with businesses being built is ludicrous. Look at the turn of the 20th century: people who built businesses worked for other people, learned the business and then branched out on their own; they invented procedures or products to make the process better, or outright invented new things.
Government does not invent, they only utilize. Look at the defense industry. Yes, the Air Force and Navy use jet fighters, but they only tell the engineers what they want the planes to do. Obama is way out there on this one, as usual.

Without private sector contractors (or communities vounteering to do the work if that is what it took/takes) there would be NO infrastructure at all.

He stood up there with a fools hat “JOKERS HAT” and tried to make business owners think they owe everything to the gov. “POTUS the FOOL” and the democrap party! Does anyone get, that he‘s brainless and can’t talk unless someone writes his speeches for him? He’s just a puppet for SATAN, a mouth piece speaking Great Things! I’ve heard that saying somewhere.
