Did Palestinian Officials Choose Violent Terrorists’ Mother to Launch UN Statehood Campaign?

On Friday, The Blaze reported on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ declaration that he would ask the U.N. Security Council to endorse his statehood bid. While this has come alongside mixed reaction and angst from both Israel and the West, Abbas has pledged that his peoples’ fight will be a peaceful one.

But a recent development has sparked fear and worry regarding just how peaceful officials truly plan to be. Back on September 8, reports about the Palestinians’ bid to become a full member state indicated that about 100 officials and activists had gathered at the U.N. offices in the city of Ramallah.

During a short ceremony, the group discussed their statehood plans and expounded upon these elements in a letter addressed to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. According to Press TV, the letter read:

“Families of the tens of thousands of victims of Israeli occupation, including those martyred, wounded and imprisoned, and countless others who were expelled from their homes or lost their homes and their property, hope that you will exert all possible efforts toward the achievement of the Palestinian people’s just demands.”

Here’s the intriguing factor: A Palestinian woman was hand-picked to deliver the letter to U.N. staff. Latifa Abu Hmeid — a 70-year-old who has seven sons who are imprisoned because of their alleged militant activities — was handpicked and deemed an excellent choice for such an honor.

According to UKPA, officials said that her personal story “reflects the plight of the Palestinians.” Some sources claim that she lives in a refugee camp in the West Bank. Her home is said to have been targeted and demolished by Israeli authorities who were responding to her sons’ crimes.

The issue here, of course, is why the Palestinians would choose a woman whose sons have purportedly committed violence against the Israelis. It would seem that such a selection would create even greater issues between the two Middle Eastern foes. Upon learning about this woman’s selection to deliver the statehood letter, The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg wrote:

The Palestinians — at least those under the Palestinian Authority on the West Bank, as opposed to those who live under Hamas control in Gaza — are said to be be embracing non-violence as a tactic, and bully for them — the occupation would have collapsed 20 years ago if non-violent tactics (genuine nonviolence, not “non-violent” rock-throwing or “symbolic” Molotov-cocktail-tossing) had been used. But this news does not fill me with hope.

Palestinian Media Watch claims that four of Hmeid’s sons face long-standing prison terms for purportedly killing Israelis. Below, PMM provides a recap of their crimes:

Nasser Abu Hmeid- 7 life sentences + 50 years – commander in Fatah’s military wing the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades in Ramallah. Convicted of killing seven Israeli civilians and 12 attempted murders.

Nasr Abu Hmeid- 5 life sentences – Member of terror faction of Fatah, Tanzim, and convicted of involvement in two terror attacks and arms dealing.

Sharif Abu Hmeid- 4 life sentences – a member in one of the brothers’ units carrying out terror attacks against civilians and soldiers. Accompanied a suicide bomber to his attack in March 2002.

Muhammad Abu Hmeid- 2 life sentences + 30 years – involvement in terror attacks.

Last year, PMM also reported that Hmeid had been honored for her sons‘ actions by the PA Minister of Prisoners’ Affairs, Issa Karake. According to PMM, she received the “Plaque of Resoluteness and Giving,” which was inscribed with her sons’ names in it:

The PA minister explained then why the mother of 4 murderers of Israelis deserves such honor:

“It is she who gave birth to the fighters, and she deserves that we bow to her in salute and in honor.”

If peace truly is the goal, selecting a woman who has been honored for what many Israelis likely consider to be her sons‘ terrorist acts against them certainly isn’t the best foot forward. But rather than choose a moderate and non-violent individual to kick off the campaign, radical fanfare was apparently in order.

    The Palistinians got themselves into this situation by threatening to attack Israel. Dyan just attacked first and could have done to them what they wanted to do to Israel. They are lucky that the Israeli Defense Force was stopped before while there was still a Palistine.
    It always amazes me that people who get what they wanted for someone else. They cry because Israel acted first.
    Israel captured so much equipment from the Arab states that the US Army , at Aberdeen Proving Ground, had wet dreams having Russian tanks, trucks and artillery to study.
    Palistine does not deserve recognition as a nation until they start acting like one and quit supporting terrorists.
    Obumbler may back the request to show his support or the Muslim Brotherhoo. If he does he will be responsible for the consequences.

      Study this thing out and if you have half a brain and any integrity I will see a post from you again agreeing with the truth of historical facts…Israel has only ever acted in it’s own defense. One easy proof for you to understand is that Israel gave back rightly conquered land. Terrorists do not give back anything they only kill and the only terrorists I have seen wear a towel on their heads a bomb vest and yell “god is great” ….then BANG a bus full of children is destroyed leaving behind tears and shattered families!

    No palestianian state. Not now, not until they agree to the original lines formed by the 1947 land agreement to form an Israeli homeland. When are people going to realize that the palestinians do not want peace. They never have. No matter how many times Israel has given concessions in efforts to broker peace the palestianians cry foul, and continually are the agressor.
