Did Rapper Common Say God ‘Was Able to Barack Us’ at White House Event?

Rapper Common has sparked controversy since it was announced he was set to perform his poetry and rap at the White House on Wednesday. His pro cop-killing lyrics, as well as his song supporting a cop-killer, were chief among the critics’ arguments against his appearance. But despite drawing ire, Common ended up performing. And while there was no mention of cops, that performance wasn’t without at least one curious line.
(Watch Glenn react to Common’s past lyrics.)
(Read our initial story on the invite.)
The pinnacle of his performance was a poem set to a beat and more lyrical in nature. It’s untitled, but suffice it to say it references “shorties,” Noah, Moses, “the struggle,“ and then a curious ending that seems to suggest God ”was able to Barack us.”
First the video, which doesn’t include the first little bit of the song:
Call me crazy, but it sounds like he’s saying that God sent Barack as the fulfillment of Martin Luther King, Jr’s “dream.” Here are the full lyrics for you to decide yourself:
“I woke up with the sunshine. A sunshine I had never seen. There was light at the end of it. Reminded me to forever dream. I was dreaming I walked into the White House. With love on my sleeve. And love for each and every one of you. Reminding you to believe. These are the words of a believer achiever. Leader of the globe, feed the souls of those in need. I bleed the blood of the struggle. Walking over troubled puddles. The hustle is in my chest. No hustle no progress. Extremities of life in this process. The birth of a son. The death of another. With love I caress both mothers. And told ‘em whose in control is the one that’s above is. I walk where money talks and love stutters. The body language of a nation. Going though changes. The young become dangerous. Spent into anger. Anger gets sent through the chamber. It’s tough when your own look like strangers. We are the sons of gangsters and stone rangers. If he could how would Ernie Barnes paint us? Look at the picture. It’s hard not to blame us. But time forgives in the shy where the young die often. Do they end up in a coffin because we haven’t taught them? Is it what we talkin’, we really ain’t walking. Dudes, hustlers, paid. How much did it cost them? I find myself on the same corner that we lost them. Real talkin’ in their ear like a walkman. My thoughts been around the corner to the world. So when I see them I see my baby girl. The Lord lives among us. The youngest hunger, recover. Means to get it by anyways necessary under pressure. Children feeling lesser with the spill upon the dresser. Killer, willer aggressors. Destiny’s children, survivors, soldiers. In front of buildings their eyes look older. It’s hard to see blessings in a violent culture. Face against rappings. Sirens holsters – that ‘aint the way that Langston Hughes wrote us. So controllers on the shoulders of Moses. And Noah. We go from being precious to Oprah. Cultivated to overcome. Ever since we came over. Seize the day in the way that you can see the determined. The soul that keeps burning. Shorty’s know to keep learning. Lessons in my life are like stripes that we earning. I took Grant’s advice that Christ is returning. Like a thief in the night. I write for beacons of light. For those of us in dark alleys and park valleys. Street hits spark valleys of the conscience. Conquerors of a contest. Even the unseen know that God watches. For one King’s dream he was able to Barack us. One King’s dream he was able to Barack us. One King’s dream he was able to Barack us.”

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 9:02amI saw this performance on “The Last Word” last night. I thought it was very moving and eloquent. I am no fan of Rap, but this is a poem about how African Americans have struggled for generations in a violent, urban culture. He’s talking about overcoming that. The last line isn’t some evil chant, it says God was able to raise a Black man to the Presidency and that Martin Luther King used to dream about that day, now, with God’s help, that is a reality. That isn’t an evil message, that is inspiring.

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 9:25amMLK’s dream was that all men be judged by the content of their character. Not that one man gets a pass due to his hue. God didn’t put Obama in the Oval Office…. A liberal press, white guilt, and 60 years of creeping socialism did it. Had the genetic dice given Barack his mothers skin tone he would of never of been elected to the Illinois Senate. It is just as insulting to like a man because he looks black as it is to hate him for it. You have an affirmative action president…. How is that working out for you?

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 9:29amRather than God raising up a “black man” to become president, He allowed us to chose a man proclaiming near messiah powers to rule over us because we had lost faith in our ability to continue as a “self governing” people.
If we recall Israel initially existed, for 400 years, as a loosely self governing people under “judges” appointed by God. Against God’s admonitions, God allowed the Israelis to put themselves under a king (Saul) because they lwanted to be like others and grew tired and fearful of governing themselves. The Israelis split as a people after 120 years of rule under kings.
Have we as a people grown tired and so fearful of our neighbors that we too demand a king?

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 9:34amBlacks deserve and can do better than this. If a white person created and performed such pitiful stuff and called it poetry and art they would be accused of satirizing and parodying blacks and promoting negative racial stereotypes – and the accusation would be just. Yet blacks do this to themselves and are actually applauded by other blacks and some whites! There is a deep current of self-loathing in such behavior – although a handful of people grow rich off of it. Whites who cheer and praise such rubbish are guilty of the soft bigotry of low expectations. Goethe: When we take men as they are, we make them worse. When we treat them as what they are capable of becoming, we help them to attain it.

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 9:47am@Tony and Artier, Sorry, I don’t see Obama as a king or a tyrant (in the ancient Roman sense) nor do I see him as a messiah. I don’t know a single Liberal who sees him that way. However, it is a very common complaint amongst Conservatives. It’s these same Conservatives who get so indignant because they feel they are unfairly being accused of being racist. I didn’t vote for Obama because he was Black. I voted for him because he was the nominee of the Democratic party. In the primary, I went back and forth for weeks before I decided at the polling stand, to vote for a woman, a wife and mother before a man my own age. When he won the party ticket, I voted for him. I am a deeply religiuos person, but this is a secular nation. Bringing up the Bible in relation to Obama’s Presidency is a little weird and very sad. I find it offensive when some “Christians” stroke the Bible and use it as some sort of Ouija board. And tribes of Israelites, three thousand years ago, don’t have much parallel with us today. Obama is a middle class kid, the son of a single mother, he has a lot more in common with the average guy on the street than the son of a President, the grandson of a Senator and the scion of a very long established wealthy elite who used his family legacy connections to get into Yale because his grades were, at best, mediocre. And Artier, he isn’t an affirmative action President, but he’s not doing half bad consider the economy he was saddled with.

The idea that lots of people do, is simply a canard floated by the right wing.
It is Obama’s enemies, not his followers, who with obvious sarcasm call him “messiah,“ ”anointed one,” etc.

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 10:24amOf course Barack Obama is an affirmative action president! A white man with his resume’ would have been laughed out of the running as soon as he announced. There is absolutely nothing that we know about Barack Obama that should have made anyone think he was qualified to perform the duties of the presidency. No experience. No accomplishments. No demonstrated talents or abilities. Family background dubious – to say the least. Lots of Marxists, radical, un- and anti-Americans in his murky and largely secret background. He has never shown success or achievement at anything in his life, despite having been given a free ride by others. If he has ever held anything resembling a real job, we have yet to hear of it. Jack Cashill has proved to all reasonable people that ‘Dreams From My Father’ was written by William Ayers. (Read ‘Deconstructing Obama’ if you think I am exaggerating. Ayers wrote that book.) Barack Obama was given the presidency by Americans as a gesture of good will because he is 1/2 black, talks like he knows what he is doing, was massively supported by the MSM, and people thought it would be nice for America to have its First Black President. His presidency is an example of racism and has done what anyone might have foreseen, caused all kinds of problems and fomented MORE racism. Being black is not a qualification for anything any more than being white is a qualification. The only real racists in America today are on the Left. The Left is obsessed with race.

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 12:25pm@Teleologicus, And what exactly were Ronald Reagan’s qualifications to run for Governor of California? A B-movie actor with union connections, who had to be told what to say as union president. He then went from B-movies to the rubber chicken speech circut when his career stalled, and yet he was elected to the governorship of California. Eisenhower may have been a fine general, but what made him qualified to be a political leader? And Harry Truman was a failed business man who got into politics through a dirty city machine, and yet, he was a fine President. Oh, and what about Richard Nixon, who got into the Senate by the use of the anti-Semitic “Whispering Campaign”. Maybe the reason Barack Obama overcame a middle class background, a funny name, and a broken family is because he is that much brighter and more ambitious than the average guy. No one seems to have given him anything, he earned it by overcoming negative little minds, like yours.

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 12:51pmYou seem to be skipping over the points. Rose are you saying that if Barack Obama had been a freckled high yellow mulatto that he would of still been elected president? Are you saying that he was as qualified than a Governor of one of the most populous states in the union?
Point two Obama’s solution to economic problems is to spend our county into oblivion and to degenerate those who want a limited government and tighter purse strings. Are you really of the mind that Keynesian spending and bigger government are the antidote to big spending of previous administrations….. (keep in mind that democratic congress spend more and created the fred/fannie Mae.) ???????

People like this clown live in the greatest, most prosperous country in the world as a result of the suffering of their ancestors. They should deeply appreciate their sacrifices or they either wouldn’t have been born or would still be living in Africa. Not many countries in Africa look that great to me. Reference grandma being a “typical white person”…The main stream media shapes so much public opinion and unfortunately most of the base is unaware it is even happening! You are exactly correct though…If a Caucasian person said the same things some of the Latinos or black people have said recently, they would be proverbially crucified. “Barack” is the Arabic equivalent of Hebrew “Baruch,“ which means ”bless.”
Hence, “God was able to bless us.”
Does anybody have any questions?

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 9:33amYep, we have been Barracked, the Barracked the economy and the debt. I like at least to be kissed first before I am Barracked. Most of the people in my small town, as soon as they heard Barry was going to be elected they said; “Well, we’re Barracked”. Ever since, we continually get Barracked. Pretty soon, people will be throwing up single fingers and tell us to get Barracked….well, we all feel that way. All I can say to the president, thanks for Barracking up this country…..OSOC

Report Post »“I bleed the blood of the struggle”-Struggle, what struggle? With Affirmative action, welfare, food stamps, blacks are about the most helped minority in the US.
“I walk where money talks and love stutters.”-Meaning, he will do anything for money?
“We are the sons of gangsters and stone rangers.”-What is a stone ranger?
” It’s hard not to blame us.”-Perhaps because you are the sons of gangsters?
“Children feeling lesser with the spill upon the dresser. Killer, willer aggressors. Destiny’s children, survivors, soldiers.”-???????
“One King’s dream he was able to Barack us.”-So now Barack is a verb. Not how I’d use it. The US got Baracked is how I would use it. Man, he is Baracked up.

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 10:17amThis is what you get for electing a black President. I told a black guy I worked with that if Barack Obama got elected President, we would see a big “get even” attitude from the black community. They would turn to him and demand everything they could get under the guise of being paid back for all the wrongs they thought were done to them, real or imagined. And he would bend over backwards to do it. He told me I was nuts. I needed to curb my racism, because I didnt know the guy. I think I was dead on. What do you all think?

Now we know why rapper Common was invited to the WH. He’s an Obama sycophant and truly a useful idiot for the administration to get the gangsta wannabe vote.

nope, not for you progressive amoeba, but you’ll be having plenty to think about soon enough – when the economy crashes, and it will, look no further than the ‘blessed’ Marxist in the WH, and the progressive who preceeded him for all your answers.

When popular “ Poets” glorify killing police officers, the results are predictable! To have the president “honor” this aaaaaassssshole tells you everything you need to know about him!

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 11:39ama non story. since baracks approval is up to 60% and people are freaking out, grasping at straws to find some problem with him, to stop his impending re-election. a better idea, would be to focus on the issues, and get a decent republican to run for the job. but neither of those things will happen.

Wrong, this poll you cite is bogus – AP took a poll of 35% Democrat and 18% Republican, those numbers are skewed! As to putting up a good contendor, you are right. But ALL of the issues COUNT, right down to the Marxist in the WH…

“Cultivated to overcome. Ever since we came over.”
I get censored for saying that Obum now has an official court rapper and that their intention is to enslave whites? Doesn‘t Obum’s man sound like a Black Supremacist? Maybe I got censored for saying I wouldn’t vote black post Obama. Never mind the polls that show that 90-92% of blacks continue to support the Maarxist. The New Blaze should let us know which ideas are forbidden on this forum, so we don’t waste our time speaking truth or common sense.

Posted on May 12, 2011 at 6:28pmThis whole “controversy” has been manufactured simply to score political points against Obama. In no way is Common a “gangsta” or a “thug” or “misogynist”, or one who condones the murder of police officers. He simply disagrees with a court decision in a particular murder trial, which is not all that dissimilar from how 99% of you believe that O.J. Simpson is guilty of killing his wife, despite being found not guilty by that same justice system.
The truth is that your racism and/or ignorance prevent you from appreciating anyone, or anything that doesn’t fit neatly into your little lily-white box of acceptable things. What common wrote for that White House event was certainly deeper and more rhythmic and more culturally relevant, than anything that some low IQ redneck like Toby Keith has ever created. If you disagree, then you are obviously a bigot, or simply a terrible judge of talent.
You people do nothing but hinder the advancement of the conservative/libertarian movement. All you do is burn bridges, and fail to demonstrate that you have any level of cultural understanding at all. At his core, Common promotes personal responsibility and the importance of faith in his community. If you fail to understand the relevance of that, then you should probably turn off your computer, and stay away from political activism, because you obviously have no idea what the hell you are doing.
Jon Stewart’s take on the matter was ABSOLUTELY right.
