Did Rick Santorum Really Use ‘Race Card’ in Critiquing Obama’s Abortion Stance?

Liberals and many in the media are criticizing former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, R-Penn., for playing the “race card” during comments he made analyzing President Barack Obama’s stance on abortion.
Santorum told CNSNews Thursday that he found it “almost remarkable” that a black man like Obama would want to deny legal recognition for the human rights of an unborn child. Santorum’s comments came just after he noted his agreement with the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., who argued in his 1963 letter from Birmingham Jail that “a just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God…”
CNSNews also notes that Santorum’s comments stemmed from a one-hour and forty-minute interview in the context of “a discussion about the advocacy of natural law by the first-century-B.C. Roman senator Cicero, the Founding Fathers’ belief in a God-given natural law–which Santorum said he shared–and the natural law’s application to contemporary policy issues.” Santorum used America’s past laws that allowed slavery as an example of an immoral policy that violated the natural law and needed to be changed.
Nevertheless, the Huffington Post dubbed Santorum’s comments a “racially-charged attack” on Obama.
“The question is, and this is what Barack Obama didn’t want to answer — is that human life a person under the constitution?” he said. “And Barack Obama says no. Well if that human life is not a person then I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say ‘now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.’”
HuffPo characterized Santorum’s comments as “clumsy” and mischaracterized his sentiment, claiming he “seemed to suggest that it was objectionable for Obama to be pro-choice because he was black.”
Santorum‘s comments also raised the eyebrows of anchors at ABC News who wondered what effect Santorum’s “interesting” comments would have on his chances as a potential 2012 GOP nominee for president.
Other media outlets, including Politico, National Journal and the Daily Beast, also accused Santorum of playing the “race card.”
By Thursday evening, the Media Research Center’s Brent Bozell released a statement publicly defending Santorum’s comments and accusing the media of working to undermine conservative thought:
This has nothing to do with a supposed “race card.” This isn’t even just about Rick Santorum. The media whirlwind whipped up on these accusations are nothing more than the continuation of an ugly and dishonest attempt to distort, delegitimize and damn conservative principles and conservative leaders.
Anyone who actually watched this interview can see that Santorum paralleled what many pro-life leaders have compared in the past. Just ask Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Day Gardner, Rev. Childress or any number of other black leaders who have also called abortion the civil rights issue of our day.
It’s sad that many of these same outlets also failed to report news yesterday of the Philadelphia abortionist charged with the murder of 1 woman and 7 babies born alive and then killed with scissors. It doesn’t get more gruesome than that. But that story doesn’t threaten liberal ideology, so I guess it’s just not news.
Santorum does threaten liberal ideology, so they create a false controversy — and call it news.

Posted on January 20, 2011 at 10:43pmI’m actually in favor of abortion, but I say do it right. If you want an abortion you must have a judge hear the case and rule. The issue is whether someone can be deprived of life limb or property without due process. To have an abortion there must be due process to defend the unborn child. This would be an excellent system if augmented with adoption so that anyone who wants to step up to raise the child may do so and save that child’s life.

The same point could be made of Jews who have any regard for the dehumanization and suffering of Jews in the Holocaust.
The Left have spent decades trying to whitewash the history of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger. She was a negative eugenicist, and therefore, by definition, a racist, who believed, like Hitler, that the “unfit” should be culled from the gene pool. She wrote that her goal was “to create a race of thoroughbreds”. Personally, I agree with Rick Santorum that any black man should be against abortion. Slavery was permitted for several hundred years in America for the same reason abortion is permitted today. Blacks simply weren’t ” full human-beings ” and therefore could be enslaved, beaten and killed at the whim of their owners.
Report Post »Pro-abortionist use the same argument to legally kill thouands of little babies each year in America, saying that a fetus is not a ” human-being ” and therefore can be legally killed or disposed of in the most inhuman manner. It’s only logical for a black president to be pro-life and adamantly opposed to abortion at any time of prenancy. if he or she is anti-slavery in their politics.

Report Post »Ronald Reagan, Jesse Jackson(when he was prolife), He had credibly defended himself. That would be a radio transcript worth having a copy of. And one that ought be taught in any political science class, or civics(do they still teach such? Or Journalism. Hey he is in top form.

Posted on January 21, 2011 at 9:58amPeople do not have the “right” to terminate a pregnancy. The rights of one individual end where the rights of another individual begins. This includes the rights of unborn children. This is especially true for those able to survive outside the womb.

Posted on January 21, 2011 at 10:26amLiberal media must latch onto any comment to generate outrage and discredit conservatives.
Report Post »If an obvious opportunity to attack conservative ideas doesn’t present itself, then they will manufacture it!
Watch for the attacks to become more and more farfetched and outrageous.

Posted on January 21, 2011 at 10:42amWhat makes you think plan parenthood is anything more than a way to control ghetto population.
Report Post »It’s eugenics packaged in a women rights issue. 5 minority children are aborted for every one white child….hmm looks like Sanger got some of what she wanted.

Report Post »I agree with your points. My point was that the Democrats saw Barak Obama as the “reliable” Progressive. I believe that there is a lot of mistrust by liberals towards the Clintons because of how Bubba was willing to compromise during part of his Presidency. Wasn’t it odd that Hillary declared herself a “early 20th century Progressive” during the Democratic primaries? I believe that she was trying to re-assure the Progressive base that she was willing to fight for their ideaology. Remember early in the Healthcare debate, many Progressives felt “abandoned” by Obama because he wasn’t fighting hard enough in their estimation? There is no doubt that no one will be nominated by the Democrats unless he/she is a hard-core Progressive. I believe that Obama recieved the nomination more out of a “trust” issue because the Clintons certainly had the political machine geared up for Hillary. That is why she shed the tears….all of those best-laid plans gone to waste. No doubt electing a black man as President gave validation and cleansed the guilt of the white liberals, but I still think that it all came down on who they thought that they could trust more.

Posted on January 21, 2011 at 11:08amSomeone answer me this question.
If unborn babies are considered “living” (both in the eyes of God and the eyes of the state) then why does a child not get a SSN until birth. And why is someone life (as defined on gravestones, obituaries, and death certificates) defined as from birth until death?
If you really want to make the case that life starts at conception then we need to start issuing Social Security Numbers to fetuses in the womb.
As far as I am concerned, you are not alive until you can live on your own. Until such a time the mother has much right to remove it as she does to remove her own kidney.
