Did Sarah Palin Sign an American Flag?

The Flag Code is clear — you should not sign an American flag. But it seems Sarah Palin may have done just that at a rally in Reno. The Guardian posted video of Palin talking to folks at the rally (the key part comes at 1:30 or so):
(via Gawker)
A Salon writer noticed the moment. Here’s screen grab #1:
Emma Mustich believes the second screen grab (from the 1:41 mark in the video) confirms her suspicions:
Mustich points out that the Flag Code is pretty clear:
Subsection 8, part (g) reads: “The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.”
Awhile back there was a flurry of blog posts about President Bush reportedly signing flags. One instance is said to have happened during a stop in Vienna, Austria. Another from a stop in Livonia, Michigan in 2003. This is the picture they referenced:
I did check on the blogger claims. This is an actual licensed AP photo from the Michigan event.
I have two poll questions for you:
I think we can all agree that signing a flag should be off limits. Though if forced to choose in some bizarre psychology experiment I would probably side with a patriot who signed an American flag than some numbskull who burns one because Karl Rove is evil. I’m sure for President Bush and Sarah Palin there is a well-motivated desire to quickly please the eager folks who press for a handshake or signature. My guess is President Bush likely realized he should have skipped the flag signing and probably didn’t make it a practice. My guess is that Sarah Palin will do the same thing.

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 11:54pmBattle flags from the shietholes of Iraq and the Stan are SIGNED and sent Home all the time… by American Patriot/HEROES…
…I have 3 battle flags from friends made during my work for the soldiers in-country, all signed by the platoons I dealt directly with (including a recon-sniper team that served 2 tours in Afghanistan, and one from one of the first groups at Camp Stryker).
Some of those named didn’t come Home.
I never asked for them, they were given out of honor for my work (and utterly humbling, considering THEIR WORK AND SACRIFICE). I wouldn’t trade those flags for anything… and don’t give a diddle-damn for the sterile application of a ‘code’… unaccompanied by any wisdom or common sense.
I’m CM Sackett, and I damn-sure approved this message.

I also have several Combat Mission Flags… Afghan, Iraq…
and older ones from Nam and areas not to mention.
Those who have served and have bled for the Flag have a totally different take on what it means.
It would however, be nice, it the general public, Hollywood producers, TV writers, had some….
just some of the protocol.

Posted on October 20, 2010 at 11:49pmKarl Denninger, an original organizer of the Tea Party, is out with a livid blog post blasting current leaders of the conservative movement and the apparent hypocrisy in their views of the economic issues that originally catalyzed its creation.
According to Denninger, “Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Bob Barr, and douchebag groups such as the Tea Party Patriots“ are to blame for the bastardization of a movement that now seems focused on ”Guns, gays, God,” instead of the Tea Party’s original mission: to castigate the federal government for supporting the “rampant theft” of taxpayer dollars that went toward “propping up FAILED private businesses.”
Here’s the down and dirty of what Denninger believes the Tea Party was all about:
In short, The Tea Party was and is about the the corruption of American Politics and the blatant and outrageous theft from all Americans that has resulted. It is about personal responsibility and enforcement of the law against those who have robbed, financially ****d and pillaged the nation.
Tea Party my ass. This was nothing other than The Republican Party stealing the anger of a population that was fed up with The Republican Party’s own theft of their tax money at gunpoint to bail out the robbers of Wall Street and fraudulently redirecting it back toward electing the very people who stole all the ****ing money!

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 8:14amMore often than not … the Flag is disrepected in our country by those who should know better.
It is very often shown backwards… the UNION in the right upper corner. WRONG!!!
The UNION… the blue area with the Stars ALWAYS goes in the upper left when viewed from the front.
That’s why when you place a Flag on your house…if you own a Flag…it should go the the left of the door… or on the left side when you are facing the house.
And this stupidity and lack of knowledge is in movies, television and yes-even polictical ads.
More than half of our people have no clue as to Flag protcol
AND MORE SADLY many homes…many who profess to be proud Americans
do not fly the Colors anyway, but they have Red Sox flags, Yankee flags, Halloween flags
and even Welcome Spring flags.
Kind of makes a Veteran a little sick to the stomach.
Maybe Every TEA PARTY member should consider flaying our Flag.
The correct way!

If it wasn’t disrespectful to sign the flag, one might consider it patriotic. See what I mean? I don’t know, I just don‘t think it’s reasonable to expect every politician (good or bad) to know every single little code or law that this country has (the number is way too massive). Approaching it from that perspective, it is common sense that the flag should not be signed. Our national symbols only have as much honor and integrity as we bestow upon them. Yes, it’s just a piece of cloth with colors on it, but our choosing to view it as a sacred object (like a bible, menorah, or koran) makes it sacred.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 12:17pmI’d even say “Big deal” if Obama did it. I think that some (not all) of the flag rules are a little silly anyway.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 12:42pmSo it is fine for protesters to burn the flag, but not for anyone to sign it? Ridiculous.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 12:44pmDon’t worry the flag was made in China… most likely didn’t have the right amount of stars and stripes anyway.. I don’t see the point of someone wanting a flag signed by Palin but maybe there was no paper available.. While I know know the flag shouldn‘t be signed had NO idea before this must be something that doesn’t come up often or EVERYONE would have known.. At least she knows her rights are endowed by her creator and SHE doesn’t run the country..

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 1:22pmWhat we need is an INVESTIGATION of those who CONTROL the public airwaves. It would appear channels would rather LOOSE money than report the TRUTH. The same goes for the newspaper industry. Has SOROS really infected the American body so thoroughly? We need people who know how, to chase this information out. It needs to be done quickly and thoroughly! Only threw the light of day can America SURVIVE this insidious INVASION into our POLITICS, our SCHOOLS, our NEWSPAPERS, and finally our CHILDREN. We must move quickly or face COLLAPSE!
WHERE IS THE FBI? They are responsible for PROTECTING our government from FOREIGN and DOMESTIC interference. No one citizen can fight the AMOUNT of money flowing in to these left-wing COMMUNIST insurgence organizations. Only when all of the citizens finally STAND UP and FIGHT back are we going to have a chance at regaining our FREEDOM!
Please call the FBI and give them any information you may have on this invasion against our constitution, our government, and our schools.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 2:38pmI never knew there was an actual code against the practice, but my gut instinct told me it is not a proper thing to do. It is disrespectful. But in the scheme of things it is not worth making a fuss of it.
Now the guy down the street from me that was using a huge American flag (a real one) for a boat cover really chapped my hide. I reported it to Clark County. They tried every which way they could to get the guy but there was nothing they could do. It laid on that boat until the sun ate it away. Then he got ANOTHER one! Freakin’ idiot. Probably is a huge Obama supporter.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 3:48pmThe fact that people do not know about the American Flag is just another thing that is wrong with our country. I suggest that our schools call their local VFW post to learn about the American Flag. They will teach anyone about it. It is our responsibility as citizens of the United States to know about our national symbols like the Flag, Bold Eagle, etc…

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 6:16pmThough a retired military person, I did not know of that rule. However, the rule should be changed if it is my flag, I claim the flag as a patriotic act or I want a hero or prominent person’s name on my flag.
Report Post »That flag may have been the only item in hand to get Sarah Palin’s signature. No big deal to the flag owner.

Posted on October 21, 2010 at 6:32pmTotally agree Miami. I see nothing wrong with writing on a flag if the intent is to keep it an a family heirloom.

Posted on October 22, 2010 at 1:08amI signed the same flag and never gave it a second thought. Do I feel guilty for have broken the flag regs, yes. Do I think I’m going to burn in hell for it, no.
Now that I know, I won’t do it again, but I don’t think anyone from any side should be chastised over it unless they are doing it to dis-respect our flag. You know, like Bill Ayers (Obama’s buddy) wiping his feet on our flag!
