Did Singing Protesters at Obama’s Fundraiser Get Paid to Heckle the President?

With the 2012 presidential campaign nearly begun, President Barack Obama has been on the fundraising circuit. Today, he held a Bay Area fundraiser of 200 donors at San Francisco’s St. Regis hotel.

But a bizarre thing happened there. A group of 10 protesters, manning a table, got up in the middle of the president’s remarks and—started singing a protest song.

Via Drudge is this description of what happened at the breakfast fundraiser from a reporter on the scene:

Mr. Obama was in the middle of his remarks when a woman in a white suit stood up and said, Mr. President we wrote you a song. POTUS tried to get her to wait until later, but she persisted and the table of 10 broke into a song that pointed out they’d just spent $5,000 donating to his campaign and went on to protest the treatment of Pfc. Bradley Manning. The woman stayed standing as they sang. Mr. Obama looked to Ms. Pelosi and asked, Nancy did you do this? Ms. Pelosi had a look on her face, as she stared at the singing group, that definitely said she did not. The song – will send quotes after transcribe – talked about Bradley Manning and how he is “alone in a cell…”

The 10 singers then passed around 8.5×11 signs that said “Free Bradley Manning” or had a photo of him. Then the woman in the white suit stripped off her jacket to reveal a black T-shirt that said Free Bradley Manning, with an image of him. “We paid our dues. Where’s our change?” they sang. USSS and WH staff had moved near the table at this point. The woman was escorted out. Two others left on their own. (The rest stayed and applauded at the end of POTUS’s speech.)

“That was a nice song,” a displeased Mr. Obama said. “Now where was I?” POTUS asked. As was indicated by that song, “Over the last 2 and a half years, change turned out to be tougher than we expected,” POTUS said.

Here are the lyrics of the song:

Dear Mr. President we honor you today sir
Each of us brought you $5,000
It takes a lot of Benjamins to run a campaign
I paid my dues, where’s our change?
We’ll vote for you in 2012, yes that’s true
Look at the Republicans – what else can we do
Even though we don‘t know if we’ll retain our liberties
In what you seem content to call a free society
Yes it’s true that Terry Jones is legally free
To burn a people’s holy book in shameful effigy
But at another location in this country
Alone in a 6×12 cell sits Bradley
23 hours a day is night
The 5th and 8th Amendments say this kind of thing ain’t right
We paid our dues, where’s our change?

Apparently, one of the singers gave the reporter these lyrics–which were written on the back of the menu. So was the website: freshjuiceparty.com.

Voila:

Did Singing Protesters at Obamas Fundraiser Get Paid to Heckle the President?

When I visited this website, from which the above screenshot was taken, I found that the group “Fresh Juice Party” is trying to encourage disenchanted liberals to sing the mentioned song at as many venues as possible. For money.

Did Singing Protesters at Obamas Fundraiser Get Paid to Heckle the President? From the website:

FRESH JUICE PARTY is pleased to annouce our newest public service, Loose The Juice! It’s your opportunity to make some quick cash and make a difference!

All you have to do is:

1. Sing the song “Where’s Our Change?” (Lyrics and sound file posted to the right) in a PUBLIC forum. Singing means projecting your voice – whisper singing doesn’t count. Public forum means any public place where it is legal to sing and video yourself: maybe a mall, college campus, a public rally, perhaps on the sidewalk in front of your local governmental offices, steps of your State Capitol Building or the White House. FOLLOW ALL LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS. We do not condone illegal behavior and your video will be ineligible if it depicts or suggests illegal activity.

2. Make a video of yourself publicly singing the song AND handing out our Fresh Juice Party Bucks (PDF download here). Just print a bunch of these and hand them out to your audience. Document this part on video, as well.

3. Upload your video to youtube. Make it shareable and public. If you delete your video or change the privacy setting of your video before the contest is over, you will not receive your payment. Email us your link and we will post eligible videos on this website.

How much money could these singers make?

$50 in a public forum showing at least 20 people in surrounding areas within earshot of the song. Clearly show us your audience and venue in the video.

$75 for singing in a costume in a public forum showing at least 20 people in surrounding areas within earshot of the song. Clearly show us your audience and venue in the video.

$100 for singing the song in a Bradley Manning mask and t-shirt in a public forum showing at least 20 people in surrounding areas within earshot of the song. Clearly show us your audience and venue in the video.

$100 for singing within the legal peramaters of the steps of your State Capitol Building, the U.S. Capitol Building or the White House.

How much for following the guidelines above—AND doing it in front the president? That’s got to be priceless.

Haven’t checked out freshjuiceparty.com yet, don’t know all the details, but on the face of it the Fresh Juice Party is a brilliant idea (not being sarcastic). Obama thinks he knows all about the unspoken, pent-up subconscious thoughts we struggle with each day. He’s going to tap into it and out pours “success”? No. Out pours fresh juice (you #*%! pawn). Can’t wait to see more from this party. Is it wrong to say it is a mirror image of the Tea Party’s attempts to be heard by government?

“Change tougher than we thought it could be…”

    Oh, really?

How is that possible, when O said he would be able to do it, to make us somehow better? A ‘vast right-wing conspiracy’?

    Pffft!

If the right wing is so ‘minority’ and insignificant, as Tingles and Olbie keep saying, how can we possibly be ‘vast’ and so ‘powerful’ at the same time? Realistically, you libs–how does that work out in your heads? Any logician would tell you those two are dichotomous and mutually exclusive.

How can the change Obow said was mandated to him possibly be ‘tougher than we thought’? Either the ‘change’ was mandated, or it wasn’t what the people wanted. Which is it?

No wonder liberals are so angry. They can’t get their own heads together, let alone a genuine conscience. Liberals have no authentic base. All they have is “the moment”–if it feels good, do it! All of which changes according to a clock on a wall.

    Pffft!

Most liberals don’t hate capitalism. You assume that everyone who is left is some deadbeat. I work two jobs and go to college. I wouldn’t mind a raise at my main job. Never had one and I’ve been here years. Wouldn’t mind a vacation. Don’t get one. That‘s everybody’s raise and vacation going up to that 1%.
You can call me a lot of stuff but thinking I don’t want to work and want something for free is bull. My insurance for a family of 4 goes up every year. gas goes up. food cost goes up. my pay stays the same while my responsibilities increase. my republican boss tells me there’s not money for a raise yet there is money for a new truck for him each year, money for him to take vacation for weeks at a time, etc. You think I want something for nothing. My boss wants to keep squeezing more out of his employees, laying people off and putting that additional responsibility on other employees. I can tell by looking at our numbers that we are up over last year but he just pockets all of it and makes you feel like crap if you expect compensation for additional hours or work load. I’ve taken 1.5 sick days since 2008. I’m not a layabout. Republicans just worship money and power and Jesus in that order.

We all know that people who own and operate businesses are the lazy ones just trying to scab off of their workers. We should have a law that limits bosses so that they can only make what their lowest paid worker makes. That would be much more fair, I think. We should also have a law that bosses cannot buy new trucks with their salary unless everyone who works for them votes that it’s ok. Or better yet, bosses (especially the republican ones), should be forced to donate their time and capital, and only get a salary if the workers decide to let them have one. That would be the best.

I serve God above all else, and money and power are not even on my list, so do not try to tell me what is important to me. I try to do everything through the prism/filter of how did and would Jesus respond.

you can’t say you believe the teachings of Jesus and crave more money. You’re full of it. I, on the other hand, am free to crave more money. Jesus was just a man.

The boss can buy whatever he wants. But if you’re going to deny ALL your employees even incremental raises over the course of years and give them no vacation days and not want to let them have a sick day ever but yet put them on salary (so you make the same even if you miss a day, he says) and have them work on average 5 hours more per week and you justify the lack of any of this by saying that there is no money when I can see our books and see more money than the last two years then at what point are you taking advantage of your employees? I‘ve been job hunting for a year and there’s nothing else that fits with my other job and school so it wouldn’t be wise to quit. but I‘m not stupid enough to believe there’s no money for raises for ANYBODY that works here. Republicans are huge fans of paying people as little as possible while wanting to squeeze out more and more than what they originally negotiated that rate for.

I live in a Red state. no green jobs here. and yes, if he tried to replace me then he would need more than one person in the short run while one was trained to do the job that 3 used to do. also, considering that losing one person would account for 33.3 percent of his workforce then, yes, he would feel it. he might not even be able to afford another new boat for at least a few extra months. tax cuts for the rich don’t create jobs. proven under Bush. they just pocket the excess. Raising taxes on them works as proven under Clinton. My boss is a real republican. he hates any kind of government handout that he doesn’t get a piece of.

Wow, you certainly are in the toughest spot I have ever heard of. Doing the job of 3 people and never getting a raise while your evil boss slacks it up and buys gas guzzling trucks with the money he should be using for your raise. Not only is he a cheapo, but he’s ruining the environment and causing the global warming.

You should start a company to compete against him and undercut every job he does. Certainly with that fine education you are getting you are smart enough to do this. And if you don’t have the capital to invest, I‘m sure you’ll have your pick of banks who will loan you the money. You might have to put everything you own on the line, and that might make for some sleepless nights, especially if you fail miserably, but you can handle it.

And just remember, when you’re the big boss, and some self-important, whiny, ungrateful sack of ballz is always on your case for a raise, you better give it to him, cuz if you don’t, he’ll sulk about it on internet news boards. Of course, if he quits on you, (and unemployment is still around 10%) you could always fill his position in about 5 minutes with someone not as annoying.

Capitalism means, an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.

This smells like a “staged” protest to me, if not the protesters would have been treated differently and forcefully removed. How could a group of 10 get through the USSS without raising suspicion ? Obama is wanting PUBLICITY for his 2012 campaignt]that has already statrted in April 2011. Campaigning is his specialty, the lime light, the thrill of the crowds cheering his name. Barry Soetoro, Barry Soetoro, no wait minute, I didn’t get that right, “Barack Obama, Barack Obama, yes we can, four more years”. .Has anybody got a vomit bag, I feel sick at my stomach…..

Everything about this guy is like a bad movie. Check out this video on how Obama is being treated over the high gas prices. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKdScVerrBU Who could forget how Bush was bashed in 2006 over gas prices?

      ……..
      It’s San Francisco.
Who knows why they sprang into song.
That probably happens all the time.

      Or:
They are professors at Berkley, and wasted $5k each so they could tell Obama
      he’s not communist ENOUGH!!
