Did the Accused Family Research Council Shooter Target a Second Christian Group Too?

Family Research Council shooting

Local and federal investigators work to gather evidence after a security guard was shot in the arm at the headquarters of the Family Research Council Aug. 15, 2012 in Washington, D.C. The head of a second conservative Christian organization said Friday the accused shooter had a note with her group's contact information and may have targeted them, too. (Getty Images)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of a second Christian conservative organization said Friday she was told by authorities that a note containing her group’s contact information was found in the pocket of a man charged with opening fire at the Washington offices of another such group, wounding a security guard.

Traditional Values Coalition President Andrea Lafferty said FBI agents visited her group’s Capitol Hill offices hours after the Wednesday morning shooting as part of their investigation. The next day, she said, members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force came by and confirmed that “our information was in his pocket,” including the location of the group’s offices.

“I was stunned,” Lafferty told The Associated Press, adding that she believes her group may have been targeted.

It wasn’t immediately clear if that was the case.

An FBI representative could not be immediately reached for comment late Friday.

The accused shooter, Floyd Lee Corkins II, of Herndon, Va., was ordered held without bond Thursday on accusations he opened fire in the lobby of the Family Research Council in downtown Washington.

Corkins, whose parents said he strongly supported gay rights, had a backpack full of Chick-fil-A sandwiches and a box of ammunition when he said words to the effect of “I don’t like your politics” and shot a security guard, authorities said.

The guard was shot in the left arm but nonetheless managed to help take down the gunman, preventing what the police said could have been a deadly attack.

It wasn’t immediately clear why Corkins, 28, had the chicken sandwiches.

Like the FRC, the Traditional Values Coalition has supported the president of Chick-Fil-A and his staunch opposition to same-sex marriage.

Tony Perkins, who heads the Family Research Council, hinted Thursday at a news conference that the FRC was not the only group targeted, although he did not elaborate.

“Maybe, going forward, you may find out more information that we may not have been the only one,” he said.

While blaming Corkins for the shooting, Perkins also faulted the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based civil rights organization that tracks and litigates against hate groups. On its website, the law center labels both Washington conservative organizations as “active anti-gay groups.”

Lafferty also was critical of the law center. “We have been on their hit list longer than any other group,” she said.

Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the SPLC, had called Perkins’ accusation “outrageous.” He said the council earned the designation for spreading false propaganda about the gay community, not for its opposition to same-sex marriage.

Lafferty said she has written Attorney General Eric Holder seeking protection for her group, but that authorities have not been responsive.

“Under this Justice Department, Christians are a very low priority on their lists of concerns,” she said

Corkins had recently been volunteering at a D.C. community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. He lived with his parents in northern Virginia.

Prosecutors requested a mental health evaluation, and Corkins’ public defender did not address the allegations in court.

Corkins faces charges of assault with intent to kill and bringing firearms across state. The judge ordered him held pending a hearing next week.

Well, let’s see: Guy shoots a guard at the Family Research Council as he headed in with 15 chicken sandwiches. Guard has a gun, so shooter gets no further; if he got inside to distribute his sandwiches, all hell could have broken loose. Guy was LGBT volunteer and told guard he didn’t like the political orientation of the FRC. Strange how the LSM find nothing to see here: No political motive whatsoever; appropriate target if there was one; move along, nothing to see here. What was once the major media are now the progressive media; part of the problem. Turn to FOX for a half-decent shot at the news (only half; fair and balanced, you know.)

Every Liberal Marxist Media station reported that the CEO of Chick-Fil-A gave money to Hate Organization. Why do I know this, because the day after Appreciation day I was confronted by a Liberal dork – she told me that the CEO of Chick-fil-a gave to hate groups. I asked her to name me just one of the Hate Org. She could not do it.

Then on the way home, I hear the CFO for Avante go weird on an attendant at Chick-fil-a. He too repeated the same talking points of the Liberal Media that day – CFL gives money to “Hate Groups”

Now this young , filled with hate useful idiot will spend the rest of his life knowing that the Liberal Media lied to him about this so called Hate Organization – shame on the Liberal Media.

The CFO of Avante – loses his job and will spend the rest of his life knowing that the Liberal Media lied to him about these so called Hate Group – shame on the Liberal Media.

My brother, a liberal, said the same thing-that the Church is a hate group. While he’s boycotting CFA, I was wondering if he was going to boycott Mom, as well, seeing as how she tithes to a hate group (AKA the Catholic Church) every week.

I have a gay friend at work and he showed me an anti-CFA meme and I had to carefully *eggshell walking is a talent of mine* ask him if he saw any hate coming from me. He said no. I asked him were was the hate in Cathy’s statement. He couldn’t tell me but he came back with how Cathy supports hate groups. I asked him to tell me how any of those groups were hate groups. He told me that they make it harder for him to get married. Because one day he wants to get married in a church because all of his family were married in a church and now he’s an outsider because of a book that was written a thousand years ago. I stopped the conversation, went in and prayed for him as I do now. As far as I’m concerned the whole movement is contradictory to its goals and I am angry at the people behind it that think by criminalizing one point of view they can justify another point of view. And meanwhile they’re using my friends by ******** promises of freedoms and rights in exchange for never ever being able to go back and change their lifestyle. By attacking Chick-fil-A and the groups they support go further than just hating Christians. They hate their own that turn straight because while the argument is “born that way” and mine is “choice,” they try to make sure that it’s instilled that being gay is permanent and there is no going back. Well honey, I did, so when you attack CfA or any of the groups they supported, well, you don’t know any better.

I hope the FBI checked the 15 Chick-Fil-A sandwiches to see if they had been poisoned!!! He was posing as a delivery man (sounds like plan “A” was make them choke on Chick-Fil-A sandwiches but the guard was having none of it and duffus had to switch to plan “B” start shooting).

I think the FBI dropped the ball by throwing away the sandwiches before anyone could check them for poison… everything is going to hell under Obama, it would seem.

Christian leaders need to research this stuff and start suing. Our government is not permitted to target US citizens for political murder…er…wait a minute! The Black Panthers & Nation of Islam says this all the time. They never get arrested. I see a double standard here. When you allow one group to foam at the moth & get other fearful & do nothing (as the government), you can expect others to get agitated.

Of course that is a cynical strategy too. Do nothing about one group threatening violence against another group. Do nothing & wait long enough when the latter group gets agitated& them clamp down on them.

Islam and Marxism parallel in mindset. Both of their founders decreed that each idealogy is fatally predestined to come about, which is why both will never tire, never give up. Not so long as they breath, they will continue to lie, connive, and conquer.

The Muslim brotherhood has learned some tactics from progressives, that evolution beats revolution. Just look at Egypt, a bloody coup is not necessary to bring about totalitarian regime. The communists have taught the Brotherhood their most effective tactic: patience.

That‘s not to say the Muslim brotherhood will not take what they can’t through treachery with force. They are not above such strategy, and neither are progressives.

In this context, it seems rather funny that so many of you are dedicated to bringing religion into government–to breaking down exactly that separation of religious and political/legal issues that prevents the U.S. from becoming a theocracy like the Islamist countries you hate.

Yes, clearly Christianity has no central figure (Jesus, the Pope, megachurch pastors, etc.).

The Sikh temple shooter = not a conservative, so Nazi = wacky lefty. How isn’t a lefty? OK City and Norway killer perhaps. Doomy,

You’re assertions there make no sense, and merely reflect the most unsubstantiated claims that inevitably circulate on right wing talk radio. Loughner cannot be consistently pinned to either side of the spectrum, there is no evidence that the V-Tech and Amish school killers were leftists–what motives have been found for them have nothing to do with the political left. And then there is this gem:
“The Sikh temple shooter = not a conservative, so Nazi = wacky lefty.”
Sorry friend, but that’s not how logic works. That doesn’t follow, and if it did, the Nazi’s were not lefties. The very definition of “right wing” politics is the belief in political hierarchy, and the denial of equality, and those are two of the most prominent facets of Nazism and the broader doctrine of fascism.
So, basically it seems your qualification for being a “lefty” is to not be proven a tea party conservative (regardless of whether your motives are political or not). The logical behind this is so obviously flawed that I don’t have much to say here. Please, stop merely repeating this talk radio drivel.

How come they can have their opinion but nobody else think differently? We have a family member like that and they have been mentally ill their whole life. They never take responsibility for the awful things she does either. She is completely alone and now she is old, she is all alone, cut off from the rest of the family in a retirement apartment where nobody goes and sees her because as you grow older with this mental disease of “liberal progressivism” (narcisstic personality disorder” and you never repent or change, you also die completely alone and nobody has to listen to their crap anymore. They need to start labeling “ extremist ” groups which all of these nut jobs are. Right or Left doesn’t matter. Bullying, intimidating and violent language should be the issue.
