Did the Crowd Boo Mexico During Last Night’s Debate?

Did the Crowd Boo Mexico During Juan Williams Question to Mitt Romney? There was an awkward moment during last night’s Republican presidential debate that has political observers, pundits and journalists buzzing this morning. When moderator Juan Williams prefaced a question for Mitt Romney with the fact that the presidential contender’s father was born in Mexico, a portion of the audience began to boo.

“Governor Romney, your father was born in Mexico. You still have family there — yet you have taken the hardest line of anyone on this stage on immigration reform,” Williams said.

The booing seemed to intensify when Williams uttered the line “you still have family there.”

This moment, which is causing many to charge that the Republican Party is anti-Mexico, may not help the GOP gain support among Hispanics come November. But did the crowd really boo Mexico?

Watch Williams’ question and the resulting boos, below:

It didn’t take long for these boos to evolve into enthusiastic praise, as the crowd applauded Romney‘s response to Williams’ question about his stance on immigration.

“I think Latino voters like all voters in this country are interested in America being an opportunity nation,” Romnney said. “I absolutely believe that those who come here illegally should not be given favoritism or a special route to becoming permanent residents or citizens that’s not given to those people who have stayed in line legally. I just think we have to follow the law.”

Did the Crowd Boo Mexico During Juan Williams Question to Mitt Romney?

Salon’s editor-at-large Joan Walsh summed up the interaction between Williams and Romney, writing, “…he asked Romney how he squared his harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric with his own family’s story of moving to and then from Mexico seeking religious freedom.” While Walsh dubbed Romney’s statements as “anti-immigrant,” the presidential candidate was clear that he favors legal immigration.

Former Bill Clinton adviser Paul Begala wrote:

The crowd booed the mere mention of the name of the country of Mexico. Just the name. I might understand it if they booed, say, North Korea or Iran or Texas A&M—centers of evil. But Mexico? Good luck with that Latino vote in November, guys.

Then, when Ron Paul said the Golden Rule should guide our foreign policy, the crowd booed. They booed the Golden Rule. Apparently nobody told them that Jesus wrote the Golden Rule. On second thought, they’d have booed Jesus.

While live-blogging the debate, Andrew Sullivan quipped, “Jeers and boos for someone who has Mexican ancestry. Wow. The rank xenophobia in the GOP base sometimes surprises. And Romney of course aims to please: he’ll veto the DREAM Act.”

Judging from the above clip there are a few possible causes for the booing. The audience members could, in fact, be showing their dissatisfaction with the fact that Romney’s father was born in Mexico. They could also be voicing their displeasure with a country in general that hasn’t seemed to curb the tide of illegal immigration into the United States, and even the rampant drug lords that seem to run the border cities. Or, they could be showing their dislike for the question Williams is asking.

A similar incident unfolded at a separate debate back in September, when a few audience members booed a U.S. soldier’s question about “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Similarly, people debated over whether the individuals were booing the fact that the soldier was gay or if they simply had an issue with the question he was asking.

What do you think? Were select audience members in this most recent debate booing Mexico? Take our poll, below:

I am sorry, I did not hear any boo’s from the audience. I hear a couple people that sounded like they were in the north 40 who “yelled”. It was hard to tell if it was a good sound or bad sound.

I don’t care if Romney has relatives in Mexico, I mean I have relatives in Salt Lake who are Mormon, I am a Christian.

And this man is one of the unbearable Liberals from Media Matters / W.H. working in Fox News to disseminate the indoctrination. It was probably OWS plants. These people are shameless. Now for something completely different…who cares? The whole idea of the GOP garnering anything but a slim portion of Hispanics is laughable. I say again. The GOP needs to forget pandering to the black, Hispanic and middle eastern demographic. IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY. THEY ARE NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR YOU…EVER. They need to pay attention to the 70% that work and pay taxes and are supporting the aforementioned demographic groups to a great extent.

@Mountain, there are plenty of legal Hispanics who are conservative and will vote with us. They have a very strong work ethic and are largely Christian. So far as I know, no-one is pandering to the middle-eastern folks, except if you count the democratic party, who thinks they will make friends with the Islamists.

Juan is just trying to ingratiate himself with his Progressive masters after they fired him from NPR for not toeing the line. They threw him under the bus for daring to speak the unspeakable just as they did with Joe Lieberman. I actually pity the man. He is probably shunned at company picnics and family gatherings and called an oreo. And worse. The Republicans should hold their debates without the Propaganda Arm of the Global Marxism/Islamic Alliance in attendance. Really, who needs them? I don’t watch them. It’s all done purposely to try and wear us down. But it won’t work. The Democrats and Progs, the Union thugs and bosses, the racists and Jihadis know this is their last chance to destroy Western Civilization. Man, will they ever rachet up the hate. Look at the stories. Newt is racist because of how he pronounces Juan. Romney is racist for an act of charity. These are the tactics of desperate people watching their malevolent and malicious plans slipping into oblivion. They are losing and they know it. More violence from the Progs will come; more darkness before the dawn. But the dawn is inevitable. There is only one way to stop us now. They tried sporadic and limited violence the last 2 years beating up the black man in St. Louis and biting off that man’s finger in California & Fort Hood & Arkansas to name just a few. Beheadings in Oklahoma and Texas. The battle is here and now. I regret the lack of brevity.

It doesn’t matter to NeoCons, nor their brainless sycophants that he’s ok with NADA ( probaly ok with EEA as well ). They live in a fake world where presidents NEVER abuse power even if they can. Sadly the rest of us know that many recient presidents have done just that, and Obama is the worst by far! NeoCons belive in righteous “mans” war, which is why at Armageddon they shall be suddenly very, very, hot, and permanently gone.
I believe that trying to “educate with facts” the NeoCon is as futile as doing so with their half brothers the liberal/socialist/progressives, neither has any interest in doing anything but shoving their lucifarian doctrines down other peoples throats as their boots slam down on the necks of those who DARE to desire “stand up freedom”.
As a Christian , I am far more ashamed by the so called Christians who are neocons than I am of their counterparts in progressivism, but both are utterly false to GODs word.

Don’t forget the estimated $20B of American untaxed revenue that mexicans export to mexico. That sure would help our American economy if it were spent here. That is mexico’s 3rd largest source of revenue after drugs and oil.

And then there is the theft of unpaid for services from our American hospitals, schools and welfare. In my small business, the only ones that try to negotiate ‘no taxes’ on their purchase are the Mexicans. Not even the asian indians or arabs try that.

I disagree with his sentiment that Latinos or any other group outside real conservatives want to see America become an oppurtunity country. People right now are in it for themselves period. No one is thinking how can I structure mylife to make my country a better place and hope that others copy their behaviours. Its just not happening but it once did and my generation was the last one to care about raising kids right to be good honest and moral citizens of this country. We are not going back to that because we are not going back to God in this country, we are in fact moving away from all things Godly and towards everything dark and freewheeling.

When Ron Paul supports leaving Iran alone, to get nuclear weapons then invokes the “Do unto others…” this is where the audience and me have an issue. If you don’t think Iran will attempt to wipe Israel off the earth, then I have some dry land in the everglades I can sell you. I love it when you try to read into a statement a subject that is just not there. Were you born dumb or did public school do this to you?

Remember, Do unto others… can apply to both sides of the spectrum.

As Somerset Maugham so succinctly phrased it
“Even the devil may quote scripture to his advantage.”
Scripture is quoted in isolation and out of context all of the time. As often as not out of ignorance, but every now and then by those who know better.
As an example (as a politician), I might refer to scripture and say that it exhorts us to:
“Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears.”
as a justification for defense spending. Those who use scripture, per se, in political discussion are fools. Wait…, were speaking of Ron Paul?

The booing sounds like it might be in response to years of invading illegals resulting in the consumption (waste) of tax dollars that should be used for to pay teachers and firemen.

      @your a sardine
No, first off after reviewing the sound source directional data, a specialist was able to identify the source of the proported “booing”. It seems a small, isolated group sitting in the far “left background” did in fact boo Mexico.
When followed by an independent observer so to ask them why, the observer reports that these “booers” went straight to their office, Obama 2012. One is reported as smelling distinctly like a sardine out of water, hmm EncinoSArDINE, where were you last night?

You must have missed Newt’s response to Juan Williams, as well as Perry’s comments about fencing the border, among other things. Moreover, it is not a press Q&A. The moderator’s job is supposed to be the posing of issues, not an inquisition, in spite of Juan Williams shameless dealing from the race card deck.

As an Arizonan, facing a law suit in which Mexico has filed an Amicus Curiae brief I would have booed Mexico. This has nothing to do with Constitutional law (foreign countries can’t sue individual US states, although an Amicus brief is not a suit), nor does it have anything to do with racism (my son-in-law is of black descent along with my beautiful grandsons or my daughter-in-law who is of Filipino descent along with my beautiful granddaughter or my Uncle and Cousins that are of Hispanic descent).

This is plain and simple, Mexico is as corrupt a country as it comes (almost as bad as ours) and it has no business messing around in the internal immigration laws of the US when they are already the largest group of legal émigré’s to our country by a two to one margin of the next group.

So in a nutshell, yeah it is ok to boo Mexico and if you don’t like it, suck it up cupcake. It’s not racism; it’s the character of a corrupt, violent and extremely racist country to our South. Think Mexico’s not really racist; look up the minor revolution that’s been fought for some time on the Yucatan peninsula by Native Mexicans trying to end the misbehavior against them for many, many years.

@ DemoLoser (listed above as 2012Obama2012)

Well, I believe we have an incident of pot loudly calling kettle black here. Your President has seen fit to blame 80% or more of his problems on Bush, instead of blaming himself, his incompetent staff, or the true genesis of his problems (Carter). Might behoove Demos to actually do some internal analysis and figure out where the problem started, not who to blame at the moment for political expediency.

Until you get that mess sorted out, we will continue to blame Obama AS IS PROPER, since political myopia works both ways. If it is valid for you, it works for us just the same.

      @2012Obamanaion
Well, you could give us something utterly false to blame his utter failure to lead all Americans upon, like blame BUSH? So?
What does personally accountability mean to a socialist utopian like Obamney ( nice seguay BetterDays ! ) ? It means “ the other guy is personally responsible ”. It doesn’t matter at all what one “inheirits” either good nor bad, it’s what YOU DO THAT MATTERS. And in this OBAMA has willfully pleased the most UNAMERICAN portion of AMERICA, the far LEFT socialist UTOPIANS, and been a cataclysmic failure for the other 79% of Americans. Actually he’s PURPOSEFULLY FAILED specific demographics in the democratic arena with the INTENT TO MANIPULATE THEM INTO ACTIONS THAT FURTHER HIS SOCIALIST UTOPIAN AGENDA. Top down, bottom up, inside out.
Funny, but my comment is now a stunning hit at the NSA, they are sure to shake there heads in full agreement with me as they add my name to the NADA list. Sadly the people we depend upon to have honor and courage, against our enemies foreign and domestic have turned out to be working for someone besides us. They know that America as a republic is toast, and they won’t do anything about it. History points to a collective mound where such as these repose, done in by the elite who bought there treason and silence, one used worthless and disposed of. Ask 75 million graves in Russia and China how Utopia worked for them?
