Did US Intelligence Drop the Ball in Predicting Egyptian Unrest?

On Friday, President Barack Obama scolded National Intelligence Director James Clapper, saying he was “disappointed with the intelligence community” for not predicting unrest in Tunisia that has spread to Egypt and other Arab countries in the region, the Associated Press reported.

An Obama administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the AP that the White House received “little warning” before riots began to break out in Egypt.

The criticism from the White House comes as Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., demanded to know the details of when Obama was briefed about the unfolding crises. “These events should not have come upon us with the surprise that they did,” Feinstein told the AP. “There should have been much more warning.”

“Was someone looking at what was going on the Internet?” she asked, referring to protesters’ use of social media outlets to organize demonstrations.

The criticism for the intelligence community from the White House and Capitol Hill just one day after the CIA’s associate deputy director testified to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence that U.S. intelligence agencies warned President Obama last year that Egyptian instability threatened the rule of Hosni Mubarak.

“We have warned of instability,” Stephanie O’Sullivan told the committee. “We didn’t know what the triggering mechanism would be for that. And that happened at the end of the last year.” Intelligence reports about protests in Tunisia began in mid-December, she added.

Also during the hearing, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., asked O’Sullivan specifically about how and when Obama was briefed on Egypt. “I am interested in when the president was told how serious this was,” he said. “This goes to the function of intelligence. … I want to get a general sense of when you told the president we were faced with something that was as serious as what we have seen in recent days.”

“The events in Egypt are rapidly unfolding and the intelligence community is working flat out to track them on the ground,” O’Sullivan responded. “But the minute things started earlier on in Tunisia, the intelligence community started looking at the long-term strategic impacts.”

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs on Friday downplayed the back-and-forth finger-pointing. “The president expects that, in any case, that he will be provided with relevant, timely and accurate intelligence assessments and that‘s exactly what’s been done throughout this crisis.”

The sides in Egypt were chosen long ago.

Libs will blame Bush somewhere, as expected. But for the past two years, who has been president? And, what has he done to either support or prevent the situation?

I’m being cynically rhetorical here. Few libs, if any, will post to this thread. They can’t face the hard questions, those queries that might make them think for once and finally get some kind of relevant coherence.

To get ‘opposing opinions’, how about we change the headline to, “Did Bristol Palin’s Dancing Stop US Intel From Predicting Egyptian Uprising?”

Do that, and the libs will invade/infest us.

Recall back in 2009 when the question of how much Pelosi knew about waterboarding came up? Obama threw the CIA under the bus right away on that one and is doing the same here. I cannot imagine the intelligence agency would have not briefed the President and the National Security Council on this. Then again, they can brief all they want if nobody listens.

It’s an endless source of amusement to me, how the Administration of the day always blames the Intel community. Imagine, for a moment the reams of information they filter through.
Consider the number of times crimes are permitted to occur because of a lack of proof against the perpetrator until it’s too late.
Analysts are usually looking at sheaf upon sheaf of data and forced to draw a conclusion. And their answers are rarely enough to enable action because the Authority is unwilling to sign the order without ‘proof’. Why? Because if they are wrong it may affect their career…
Then a disaster occurs and the Admin blames Intel for not warning them.
Damned if you guess, damned if you don‘t and thrice damned if you lie about having proof because you’re damned sure but have no solid evidence! Read: WMDs
So get the hell off of the Intel Comm! I’d wager they work harder to do their job correctly, than 90% of the world’s population. ((That percentage should be adjusted by the number of military and emergency personnel active throughout))
I may be wrong, but I think those people ignorant of the mountains of ‘tips’, that the Analysts sort through, should cut ‘em a little slack.

I agree that Obama and his minions have known what is going on in Egypt and all of the middle east long before the so-called intelligence community shared intel with them. They probably know more than the so-called intelligence community combined. They are designing the whole thing. Why else would Obama insist that the muslim brotherhood be included in the new political process. They are laying the groundwork for their immediate or eventual takeover. It is a mistake to think that Obama is misguided, incompetent, or otherwise ignorant. He knows exactly what he is doing. He is not ignoring anything. He just has completely different priorities than what most commonsense Americans and competent patriots have in mind. What is up is down and what is down is up. Diametrically opposed to what is in ours or frankly the middle easts best interests.

But where is the story about the blown up gas pipeline in SinaI ? Blaze , you are a little slow on this one.

Was watching Al Jezeera very early this morning when this happened and the images of the flames shooting 100s of feet into the air was striking. I was transfixed to the live pictures and in my mind was taken back a few thousand years BC to the time when Moses was leading the Jewish people out of Egypt through this area, the Sinai, and eventually into the promised land, which is present day Israel. In the Sinai the piller of fire followed the Jews at night and must have looked something like this. There are earth shaking events happening right now, and what happens next is anyones guess, but Israel is very concerned and God is watching over his people. Pray for Israel and the rest of the region as well. We do live in very interesting times.

I just watched that whole video you posted. The only hope i have is that the EU falls after the Middle East, giving us here in the U.S. time to properly prepare. I don’t mean physically prepare, but rather mentally prepare and ask ourselves, “what if”. “What do i do if this comes to my community, or if 250,000 show up in the halls of Congress demanding ousters”.
Will we sit back and watch on cable news, or will we stand, and maybe die, for the Constitution? What if you live in a big city (most likely starting points…) and rioters are calling for the heads of those in your local government? Will you stand by and cover your head under the sheets and wait for the “boogieman” to go away, or will you stand, and maybe die, for your neighbors?
What if these crazy revolutionaries come to your door and demand fealty to their cause? What then? Do you kneel before them and kiss their ring of fealty or do you what is your right under the Constitution and make them pay for daring to violate the safety of your family?
We all hate this, and can post whines and complaints all day, but in the end you have to ask yourself the hard question.
      What will YOU do?

      Impeach Barry Soetoro.

He’s sabotaging the United States by using the EPA to shut down our power plants. They also plan on taking over our water and food. They’re poisoning our water and food.

I’m gonna make a big old sign saying “IMPEACH BARACK OBAMA” and go stand by the freeway exit with it like those homeless dudes.

Which exit? I‘ll be there with a bucket o’ fried chicken and some “ernge drink’.
Lol, yeah, I’m white, but I am from the south, so I dig on me some KFC and sunkist!

Semper Fi and rally on, my Brother!

      Brigite Gabriel…actforamerica.org
I transcribed this from a speech she gave…(wish we had the ability to post things in italics or bold so I could highlight the real critical info)…I know it’s long…but I think, worth your time…note that the Muslim Brotherhood was started because an Islamic caliphate (Glenn has been talking about this very topic this week) DID exist, but was destroyed by an Egyptian President in 1928…

We in America should be very concerned…

The Muslim Brotherhood is the oldest Islamic terrorist organization in the world. It was founded in 1928 in Egypt, as a response to President Ataturk ending the Islamic caliphate; giving rights to women to vote, to not wear a hijab, to go to work, to get an education. So a group of Muslim radicals in Egypt said, “How can this man end the caliphate? Islam is the best religion in the world. Islam is the supreme religion. It is above Christianity and Judaism.” Therefore, they founded the group in order to bring back the Islamic caliphate and re-institute Sharia Law. Most people did not pay attention to them thinking them a small, insignificant group. However, this group has grown and grown and grown. And, today, the Muslim Brotherhood has 70 Islamic off-shoot organizations around the world including Al Qaeda and Hamas.

The Muslim Brotherhood is the mother ship that launched modern Islamic terrorism as we know it today. Ayman Al-Zawahiri, the second man of Al Qaeda, used to be one of the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. He was actually arrested by the Egyptian government, thrown in prison and then later sent into exile. Osama Bin Laden was also a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Mohammad Atta, the ring-leader of the 9/11 attack was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Shak Waheed Mohamed came out of the Muslim Brotherhood as well. This is exactly why President Mubarak immediately shut off the internet connection to Egypt because he knew that Ayman Al-Zawahiri, the second man of Al Qaeda, would be trying to connect and communicate with the street in Egypt; rallying on, pushing, giving instructions to the youth that were rioting right now and to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt who are continuing on to topple the regime. That was the reason why the Mubarak government immediately shut off the internet.

Not all of the Egyptian people accept the Muslim Brotherhood. Of course not all of the peoples of Egypt are members of the Muslim Brotherhood. However, the Muslim Brotherhood does have a huge membership in that country. But, what the Muslim Brotherhood has in common with the Egyptian people is that they DO represent the majority of the people in Egypt. The worldpublicopinion.org did a survey in Egypt where they went in Egypt door to door interviewing people face to face asking them if they would like to bring back the establishment of an Islamic caliphate around the world. According to the survey, 67% of those interviewed, more than 2/3rd of the population…hardly a fringe minority, desire this outcome: A caliphate throughout the world! In the poll, they were also asked if they want the implementation of Sharia Law across the Islamic world and 74% of those surveyed want and support the strict application of Sharia Law in every Islamic country. So, as you can see, the population of Egypt…the people themselves, are not people just like us. You know, they think just like us, they believe in women’s rights, etc., this that and the other. One very important thing to mention is that Egypt is that Egypt is the second largest Islamic region in the world. It has 80 million people (second largest after Indonesia). Egypt comes number one in the world of women who are genitally mutilated. Whether their husbands are doctors or lawyers or millionaires, or educated, or whatever, at 97%. So that gives us an idea of what their basics are…where they come from religiously into all this and why the Muslim Brotherhood is so entrenched in Egyptian society. If elections are held today, the Muslim Brotherhood will win hands down. Most of the population in Egypt are in agreement, hands, down with their point of view. And that is why they will have representation in government and will take over the government.

Mohammad El Baradei was the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He was supposedly monitoring Iran’s nuclear development. It was actually El Baradei who turned a blind eye to what Iran was doing and allowed the Iranians to advance as much as they have in their nuclear development. AND, as a thank you to El Baradei, the Iranian government gave him over $7 million in September of 2010. They wanted him to run for president of Egypt to bring about “political change in the country”. The money was funneled to him in Bucharest, Romania through an Arab businessman known only by the initials A and E. That being all we know about him. Iran wants to prop up El Baradei to be able to work with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt to get rid of the Mubarak regime. The Mubarak regime is friendly to Israel and who signed a Peace Treaty with Israel and gave Israel the “green light” last year to allow Israel to use its’ submarines to take its’ subs through the Suez Canal in case Israel gets into a confrontation with Iran or does a pre-emptive attack against Iran. That is why Iran has a vested interest of making sure that there is instability in Egypt, the Mubarak regime is toppled and that someone who is friendly to Iran is appointed to the leadership of Egypt.

It is for certain that all of our allies in the region are thinking that if the United States is throwing Mubarak under the bus this fast, considering that Mubarak has been such a stanch ally to the United States; Mubarak who was actually standing on the stands when Anwar Sadat was assassinated for signing a peace treaty with Israel (that’s how Mubarak became President). Mubarak stood with the United States. He enforced the peace accord with Israel. He allowed Israel to have an advocacy in Cairo, representation in Cairo. He kept the diplomatic relationship. Mubarak actually worked with the coalition (Egypt also being a part of the coalition) actually went and attacked Sadam Hussein to liberate Kuwait in the first Gulf War. Mubarak stood with the United States as well throughout the 1990’s in our war as we were looking at radical Islamic organizations as well, especially in the last 10 years since September 11th. He worked with the United States providing intelligence to us about radical Islamic operations all around the world. He stood with the United States. So Arabic regimes who are friendly with the United States like the Saudis; like King Abdullah (Jordan) , who know that there are a lot of people in their populations who detest the fact that they are working with the Americans or even considering talking to the United States and Israel are looking at America and how easily we have disposed of Mubarak or threw him under the bus. They are thinking, “What type of ally is this. America will stab you in the back in a heart beat”. That is why this is actually damaging our relationships with our allies around the world and they are not going to be as helpful or as loyal to us knowing that that is what America now does. Look we have betrayed the Shah in Iran and now we are betraying Mubarak!

The United States needs to be very, very careful right now. It has been leaked that we are working with the Mubarak regime behind the scenes in making certain to identify people with whom we can negotiate. That we can talk with. Like an interim government to fill the void. At least to figure out something between now and the next election. We need to use whatever boots we have on the ground over there to identify true leaders within the protestors who are pro-western, pro the west, pro-democracy, who can be trusted. We also need the Mubarak regime to let us know who these people are. Someone we can work with. Someone we can prop up and give support to. So that the people on the street will feel that they have a spokes person representing THEIR point of view to the world and that America is standing on the side of Democracy and freedom and at least that will allow us and give us the time to actually think about a true ally that we can work with and prop up and support because things are moving so rapidly right now that it is proposing a major challenge to the west because we are seeing the political landscape changing in the Middle East right before our eyes.

The real problem is that it is unknown if the Obama administration even knows what it is doing. Obama talking about working with the Muslim Brotherhood. Giving them rights in the government. Giving them representation in the government. You would think that he has learned nothing from what happened in Lebanon or with Hamas when both terrorist organizations came to power. Hamas in the Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon when Democratically they were given representation in the governments. Right now Hamas completely controls the Gaza strip and Hezbollah literally just took the government in Lebanon two weeks ago. America has just within the past 3 weeks lost 3 Islamic secular regimes who were supporting the United States. One in Tunisia, one in Lebanon and now we are losing Egypt right before our eyes.

It would appear that the Obama administration does not know what it is doing when it comes to foreign policy and especially what is happening in Egypt based upon what Obama has been saying in the last few days about the US needing to work with the Muslim Brotherhood because they are changing, they are just not as “bad” as they used to be! What? Of course they are not as “bad” as they used to be because they are saying whatever “needs” to be said in order to secure a position in this government. It is very concerning that we basically have a community organizer as our President who is going to be even more damaging to our country as Carter was during the times of the Shah of Iran and ushering in Khomeini and the Mullocracy in Iran and Iran with nuclear bombs that we are looking at today. The decisions that Obama is making, not only right now, but those that he has made over the past two years, are not only causing major destruction of the United States from within in our own capitalist system. Obama is causing destruction around the world because of his words, his actions and his weaknesses. He is seen as an appeaser who is causing evil and radicals to rise up because they are emboldened by these weaknesses and signs of cowardice. These perceptions are causing up rises and creating regime change across the Middle East that will affect not only the Middle East, and America and the West. Right now, only the Muslim Brotherhood can fill in the regime and the void that exists in Egypt. The Muslim Brotherhood is the most organized and they are communicating with Iran.

You have to remember that over 60% of the people right now in Egypt are under the age of 30. This is not because this society is educated. It is because radical Islam is growing and they are marrying multiple wives and having multiple children at the same time. That is what has caused the rise in the Egyptian population of today. We saw the same thing happen in Iran since the Mullahs took over the regime in 1979. This is why in Iran today, 70% of the population is under the age of 30. So the writing is already on the wall in Egypt. What we in America have to do is be very smart in the way that we handle the situation.

CIA and FBI was too busy spying on US citizens to know what was going on in Egypt. I bet the Israelies knew and told the WH(Obama). Since he hates them he just ignored it. Obama knows if the MB get control of Egypt then Isreal will be attacked. Obama was in on this from the beginning. That is why he has rushed to destroy US energy production. He must create a crisis so we beg him to fix it by becoming a dictator. Worked in the past in other countries why not here among the stupid?

Bring back the Secret Service. Since It was consolidated into the Department of Homeland Security it has been a dismal failure. Here is the Muslim master plan, here is my prediction. The Muslim Brotherhood, first takes over power in Egypt and then several other Middle Eastern Countries. They take control of Israel preserving their nuclear warheads. Their long range nuclear missles are capable of reaching the US. You can fill in the blanks from here.

I think most people asked themselves that question Hence the ammunition shortage. The Rioting you see overseas will most likely take place here and what the police can’t handle citizens will. The fact that 60% of our population is armed will prevent a complete overthrow. This is why the rioting in the 60s never got very far.
