JERUSALEM (AP) — Underneath the crowded alleys and holy sites of old Jerusalem, hundreds of people are snaking at any given moment through tunnels, vaulted medieval chambers and Roman sewers in a rapidly expanding subterranean city invisible from the streets above.

At street level, the walled Old City is an energetic and fractious enclave with a physical landscape that is predominantly Islamic and a population that is mainly Arab.

Underground Jerusalem is different: Here the noise recedes, the fierce Middle Eastern sun disappears, and light comes from fluorescent bulbs. There is a smell of earth and mildew, and the geography recalls a Jewish city that existed 2,000 years ago.

Editor’s note: This video shows a tunnel discovery made in 2007.

Archaeological digs under the disputed Old City are a matter of immense sensitivity. For Israel, the tunnels are proof of the depth of Jewish roots here, and this has made the tunnels one of Jerusalem’s main tourist draws: The number of visitors, mostly Jews and Christians, has risen dramatically in recent years to more than a million visitors in 2010.

But many Palestinians, who reject Israel’s sovereignty in the city, see them as a threat to their own claims to Jerusalem. And some critics say they put an exaggerated focus on Jewish history.

A new underground link is opening within two months, and when it does, there will be more than a mile (two kilometers) of pathways beneath the city. Officials say at least one other major project is in the works. Soon, anyone so inclined will be able to spend much of their time in Jerusalem without seeing the sky.

Did You Know Jerusalem Had an Underground City? See for Yourself

On a recent morning, a man carrying surveying equipment walked across a two-millennia-old stone road, paused at the edge of a hole and disappeared underground.

In a multilevel maze of rooms and corridors beneath the Muslim Quarter, workers cleared rubble and installed steel safety braces to shore up crumbling 700-year-old Mamluk-era arches.

Above ground, a group of French tourists emerged from a dark passage they had entered an hour earlier in the Jewish Quarter and found themselves among Arab shops on the Via Dolorosa, the traditional route Jesus took to his crucifixion.

South of the Old City, visitors to Jerusalem can enter a tunnel chipped from the bedrock by a Judean king 2,500 years ago and walk through knee-deep water under the Arab neighborhood of Silwan. Beginning this summer, a new passage will be open nearby: a sewer Jewish rebels are thought to have used to flee the Roman legions who destroyed the Jerusalem temple in 70 A.D.

The sewer leads uphill, passing beneath the Old City walls before expelling visitors into sunlight next to the rectangular enclosure where the temple once stood, now home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the gold-capped Dome of the Rock.

From there, it’s a short walk to a third passage, the Western Wall tunnel, which continues north from the Jewish holy site past stones cut by masons working for King Herod and an ancient water system. Visitors emerge near the entrance to an ancient quarry called Zedekiah’s Cave that descends under the Muslim Quarter.

The next major project, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority, will follow the course of one of the city’s main Roman-era streets underneath the prayer plaza at the Western Wall. This route, scheduled for completion in three years, will link up with the Western Wall tunnel.

The excavations and flood of visitors exist against a backdrop of acute distrust between Israeli Jews and Palestinian Muslims, who are suspicious of any government moves in the Old City and particularly around the Al-Aqsa compound, Islam’s third-holiest shrine. Jews know the compound as the Temple Mount, site of two destroyed temples and the center of the Jewish faith for three millennia.

Muslim fears have led to violence in the past: The 1996 opening of a new exit to the Western Wall tunnel sparked rumors among Palestinians that Israel meant to damage the mosques, and dozens were killed in the ensuing riots. In recent years, however, work has gone ahead without incident.

Mindful that the compound has the potential to trigger devastating conflict, Israel’s policy is to allow no excavations there. Digging under Temple Mount, the Israeli historian Gershom Gorenberg has written, “would be like trying to figure out how a hand grenade works by pulling the pin and peering inside.”

Despite the Israeli assurances, however, rumors persist that the excavations are undermining the physical stability of the Islamic holy sites.

“I believe the Israelis are tunneling under the mosques,” said Najeh Bkerat, an official of the Waqf, the Muslim religious body that runs the compound under Israel’s overall security control.

Samir Abu Leil, another Waqf official, said he had heard hammering that very morning underneath the Waqf’s offices, in a Mamluk-era building that sits just outside the holy compound and directly over the route of the Western Wall tunnel, and had filed a complaint with police.

The closest thing to an excavation on the mount, Israeli archaeologists point out, was done by the Waqf itself: In the 1990s, the Waqf opened a new entrance to a subterranean prayer space and dumped truckloads of rubble outside the Old City, drawing outrage from scholars who said priceless artifacts were being destroyed.

This month, an Israeli government watchdog released a report saying Waqf construction work in the compound in recent years had been done without supervision and had damaged antiquities. The issue is deemed so sensitive that the details of the report were kept classified.

Some Israeli critics of the tunnels point to what they call an exaggerated emphasis on a Jewish narrative.

“The tunnels all say: We were here 2,000 years ago, and now we’re back, and here’s proof,” said Yonathan Mizrachi, an Israeli archaeologist. “Living here means recognizing that other stories exist alongside ours.”

Yuval Baruch, the Antiquities Authority archaeologist in charge of Jerusalem, said his diggers are careful to preserve worthy finds from all of the city’s historical periods. “This city is of interest to at least half the people on Earth, and we will continue uncovering the past in the most professional way we can,” he said.

This is really cool! I knew about the medieval Knights Templar digging under the old temple, but had no idea of the extent of the Jewish network of underground rooms and passages. To me, it further cements the fact that this land is and has always been the land of Israel or Judea, the land of the Jews.

Obviously, the Palestinians and other Islamics are complaining about it, or feel threatened by it. Even though they have much more land than Israel, they’ll never accept the idea of allowing Israel to exist peacefully in their tiny sliver of land, about the size of New Jersey. They should be thankful that Israel is nice enough to allow the holy sites of 3 major religions to be accessed by those who desire it without being challenged. Do you think the Palestinians or other arabs would be so generous if they held that territory?

Once again, the Jews have reiterated their righteous and fully legal claim to the land that is the sovereign nation of Israel. Both on the ground and below it.

here is a idea. The book of Daniel,(old testament) and the book of revelations(new testament) both state the the temple has to be rebuilt on the temple mount. What if it is but in that it is underthe new city,in the old city. It would been then built right on the original bed rock.It was alway a hung up to this been done with the muslim site there now. This could be a way around this.

I believe there is something very important known that the muslims want to unjustly keep for themselves. This must hold alot of power otherwise they would not fight tooth and nail to keep what is not theirs. The campaign of propaganda still carries on as the muslims lay claim to this as their property, as do the Jewish in Israel, its ‘rightful’ place as history will show.

In America I find it revealing for generations now the wheels of propaganda have been spinning to chip away at American exceptionalism–faith in God, belief in our country, in our self as a good people. I believe this was ordained to get us out of the way, the last power that would ‘stand’ with Israel. Once we were out of the way, it would be quite easy to take over Israel, take over what is under that temple mount.

We must not let them get away with this. We must do this for God. God has put us in charge also. We are a power to be reckoned with. We are the one nation, outside of Israel, that is so hated! Why? Because there is something so right about us/Israel! We must never let them do this. Remember, they cannot take what has not been given and I have not given my country to ‘them’! How about you?!

At times it is found that cities are built on TOP of the old original city which will tell the true history.

I personally think it is time for Israel to do a little cleaning out around their homeland.
Every country at one time or another has claimed and taken what is rightfully theirs. And taken what they want or need. Israel is too political sensitive but they need to tell the world that they have had enough. For whatever reason that people think Jews must continue to be prosecuted………[what woes their crime?] Israel needs to stop their world and tell the rest to get the hell off.

ALL JEWS are DAMNED ETERNALLY, UNLESS and UNTIL they ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST as the SON of GOD and their ONLY CHANCE at SALVATION. They will continue to be “persecuted”(not prosecuted) until they yield to the will of GOD. Who owns the real estate won’t change that fact in the least part.

So Israel is right not to split up Jerusalem. I have been studying it for a long time. Seen a story on it a few years back on PBS. There is a lot more to the city that has not been publicized yet.

Marylou7 – “There should be no doubt that Jerusalem belongs to Israel NOT THE ARABS.”

Actually the last time Jerusalem was fully owned by Israel was just before ancient Babylon destroyed that city in 607 B.C. Since then Jerusalem was under the control of various foreign nations until finally, Rome completely and fully ended the nation of Israel in the year 70 A.D., destroying the city and scattering the Jews to all quarters of the then known world.
Now it is true they claim the land again, but in reality Israel is no longer a nation in God’s eyes, and as a result of rejecting God’s Son, Jesus, other people have occupied the land since 70 A.D. Matthew 23:36-39

There is an archway that has been sealed by the muslims that runs along the west wall (just north of what is known by non-Jews as the “Wailing Wall”). It led under what was the original Temple of Solomon… a team of holy men, Christian & non-Chrisitan, & archeologists explored this tunnel… they found something that prompted them to back out & seal this tunnel with 20′ of cement & rebar..!.. Could be…Leen Ritmeyer, who has conducted research on the Temple Mount and inside the Dome of the Rock claims to have found the spot on the Mount where the Holy of Holies was located during the First Temple period. In the precise center of that spot is a section of bedrock cut out in dimensions that may match those of the Ark as reported in Exodus. Based on his findings, Ritmeyer has postulated that the Ark may be buried deep inside the Temple Mount. However, it is unlikely that any excavation will ever be allowed on the Mount by the Muslim or Israeli authorities.

Israel is a part of our roots. Quite a number of us have some Hebrew ancestral ties whether we acknowledge it or not. Our laws and most of our religion come from those ties. The biblical recounting of Moses and the journey the Jews made is factual. Whether you want to believe it or not is your choice. I believe it. The biblical recounting of Christ and his experiences in Israel are factual, whether you want to believe that or not. I believe it. My Jewish ancestral connection is real although I am a Christian. I believe Israel should exist and we should stand by it. If you deny Israel, you deny a part of our past. If you are of some other religion than Christian or Jew, more power to you just don’t try to force us to not believe in our own history. If you allow the Muslims to destroy Israel, you better start trading in your prius for a camel and start getting a callous on your forehead because your history is about to change. A Temple must be built sometime during the last seven years as Dan 9:27 declares that the anti -christ will cause the sacrifices to cease three and a half years after he signs a treaty with israel. The Priests have been trained and the temple furniture has been remade. The Ark is the only item that can’t be duplicated as it contains the Ten commandments,Aarons rod that budded, and a pot with manna in it.

      @betterdays,
I believe BO was speaking of the ark Moses was instructed to build – which Hebrews states was a copy of the ark in Heaven (which Rev 11:19 refers to), one not built w/ hands, not of this creation:
Hebrews 9:11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

      Hebrews 9:23-24 Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. (24) For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

As was stated earlier, the second temple (Herod’s) did not contain the ark. There is no indication in scripture that I’m aware of that the (third) temple will or must contain it either (though they could fashion a replica). That said, it is possible that the original could be “found” – which itself is a likeness of the true ark in Heaven. The “high priest” is also a likeness of the true High Priest who is also in Heaven – but the Jews don’t (yet) recognize Jesus (Yehoshua) as thier Messiah. So they will rebuild the temple such that Daniel 9:27 will come to pass.

You must admit (if you can read) the lowly joos NEVER kept the covenants God gave them and rebuked Him instead. They have spit in His face ever since. They falsely try to claim Him as their God alone when He is in fact the only God of ALL CREATION and ALL mankind. The Muslims call Him Allah which is God in Arabic.

And neither do you coyote2 – “keep the covenants (I suspect you mean commandments) of God”. No man has, no man can save the God-Man, the Messiah, Jesus. That is the point of the Cross. Christ fulfilled the law & became a propitiation (substitute) for the sin of the world. The Lamb w/out blemish.

Most of the covenants God made w/ “the joos” as you refer to them – the most significant – were unilateral and unconditional. I.e. there were no conditions placed on the Jews, that includes the Abrahamic covenant (the land grant) & the Davidic covenant (the Messianic). They (Israel) couldn’t vacate the covenants if they wanted to, and the God of the Bible cannot lie, nor will He deny Himself (so if He said it will come to pass, it will come to pass).

A side note: Abraham was not a Jew. Nor was Jacob (he was the first Israelite). Jews came from the line of Judah, the fourth of Jacob’s twelve sons.

As for islam worshiping the same God that Jews do, you need to do better homework than to listen to NPR. Allah was derived from al Ilah, the arabian “moon god”. Mohammed consolidated a polytheistic system into a monotheistic one. However he consolidated it around the arabian “moon god”, not the biblical God of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob (YHWH).

I’m sure there are a ton of other things like this. The earth is a rather large place. There was a story the other day that they found new pyramids.. how you could overlook a pyramid is beyond me. Don’t forget the majority of this planet is under water. There’s a lot more to discover out there. Hope we don’t nuke the planet before discovering some of these things.

Don’t worry Joe, I’m sure Obama/ Sotero/Bounel is hard at work having Cass Sunshine come up with myriads of new and unnecessary regulations specific to the exploration industry. The EPA will stipulate that any and all exploration must leave Zero trace of it’s having taken place. The department of Geology will stipulate the scope of all exploration to the most minute detail. And the Department of education will insure that only Unbiased liberal whiz brains get to engage in any future explorations for educational integrity reasons. The department of the interior will bicker with the department of the anterior over wether the department of the posterior gets oversight of the undersites.

      @Joe
      Lol, I h8 no one.
What’s the difference between acceptance and tolerance ?
Acceptance says “you have the right to be as screwed up as you desire to be.”
Tolerance says the same but with these words added “, but not on my front lawn”
America, Joe is my front lawn, I think your a bright kid, but I think you’ve wasted your vote on someone you know nothing about. That’s not only unwise but highly detrimental to yourself.
Here’s some homework Joe, if the have the courage to look into it.
      www,CFR.org
find Michele Obama’s name, Chaneys, Clintons, both Bush’s, Geithner, Bernankie, Kissinger, Bidem, John Bolten, John Huntsman, Carl Rove, and the who’s who in American wealth and power.
Find BP, Boeing, GE, Chase, BOA, Chevron, Conoco Phillips, Monsanto, all the multinationals and the MIC.
Read what all these players stand for on the CFR Global Gocernance Page.
Then find out who is not out to enslave you (like Ron Paul) and vote for him. Other wise you only support those who mean you very seriousl ill, and that my friend is the description of clinical insanity.
Jesus loves you so I am able too Joe.

JoeAmerica, Yes, there are lots of things yet discovered. Besides the Indian ruins in Mexico & Central & South America restored, my favorite was Borobudur, Indonesia on island of Java. This was magnificent stone work, built around 750AD and discovered in 1814 and restored in 1973+ 3 stories high and beautiful. It was covered by ash during eruption of Mt. Merapi and became a hillside. Many discoveries in America of Indian Mounds that contain many relics. I’m sure there are many ruins yet to be discovered. Some are being hidden from the public to protect them.

But, the slur against Texas I take exception to. I only lived there 3 years and want to get back some day. My coffee mug says, “If I lead a good life, Say my prayers & Go to church, When I die, I will go to Texas” so Mr. Joe, don’t mess with Texas. It’s a great state with much history & much pride and I love it there. I love the Texas pride they have in their state.

It is amazing what the Jewish people know and do not tell the world!! There are many things being discovered in these days……..http://www.copper-scroll-project.com/

There is a Hebraic Roots television station, very supportive of Israel, who has lots of guest speakers from Israel, speakers who are doing excavations over there like Dr. Steven Collins, the Trinity Southwest University’s College of Archaeology & Biblical History (Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA) and the Department of Antiquities of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on the excavation of Sodom/Gomorrah. http://tallelhammam.com/

They also have a “David Fund” which directly supports the Barak Armored Brigade (tank) division with articles of clothing, gloves, warm jackets, that Israel cannot afford to supply to the IDF soldiers. Many of the partners donate $20.00 to ????? to the David Fund each month for the soldiers.

The station in very good, but let me warn you, that when I first started watching it, it scared me to death to find out how little I understood my Bible!! http://glc.us.com/site/index.php

“But many Palestinians, who reject Israel’s sovereignty in the city, see them as a threat to their own claims to Jerusalem”
So what they are saying is that the palestinian terrorists see this as a threat to their own claims because it PROVES that their claims aren’t worth cr*p and that it shows that they are only there to try and steal the land of Jerusalem and Israel from the Jewish people when they actually have exactly zero claim to any part of it. Of course the Palestininans would want to downplay any Jewish activity thousands of years ago in the area. Israel has developed, upgraded, and vastly improved the region in the years following its official creation as a country.

Do you really think that the land would be so developed if the Palestinians had been given the same opportunity? I doubt it. It would still be an unarable land with cities that barely eke out an existence, instead of the rich farmland and vibrant, thriving cities that the Jewish people have created out of the desert.
