Did You Know Planned Parenthood Has a Clinic Inside an L.A. High School?

A Los Angeles high school has teamed up with Planned Parenthood in an effort to combat the number of its unplanned teen pregnancies — a unique partnership thought to be the only one of its kind, according to a profile by the Los Angeles Times.

Separate from the nurse’s office, the on-campus clinic at Roosevelt High School provides free birth control, pregnancy tests, counseling and screening for sexually transmitted diseases. Roosevelt is located in L.A.’s Boyle Heights neighborhood, a low-income, heavily Latino area with a disproportionately high teen pregnancy rate.

According to the Times, the partnership has been in place for several years and has been effective:

The campus began offering contraception and counseling in 1997. But in 2006, a collaboration with a local hospital ended and the school no longer had the resources to provide free contraceptives. In 2008, [nurse practitioner Sherry] Medrano said, she saw 32 positive pregnancy tests during her peak period between March 1 and June 1 — around the time of spring break and prom.

Medrano then reached out to Planned Parenthood, which now provides a medical assistant, the contraceptives and the pregnancy and STDs testing. The organization bills Family PACT, a public program that provides family planning to low-income and uninsured California residents.

In 2009, Medrano said, she saw three pregnancies during the same time period. The numbers have since climbed to about 10. Only a few parents have complained about the program since it began, she said.

Medrano said students feel more comfortable seeking out the school-based health clinic than they would going elsewhere.

Planned Parenthood Teams Up With L.A. Roosevelt High School to Reduce Teen PregnancyOne 16-year-old student who first received emergency contraception from the clinic before returning for regular birth control told the newspaper she was relieved knowing she could get such treatment without having to tell her parents.

“Just knowing you can come somewhere to get birth control just feels good,” she said. ‘It’s a relief.”

According to the Times, Planned Parenthood also trains students at the school to be peer advisers and teach their classmates about STD and pregnancy prevention.

Still, not everyone believes the level of Planned Parenthood’s involvement at the high school level is a good idea, according to KABC-TV.

“I know the birth control, obviously, it teaches girls a lot, it prevents pregnancies,” Anne Hennessy, executive director of the Right to Life League of Southern California, told the station. “We would hope that the care in that part of their lives would be done in collaboration with their parents rather than through the schools.”

The Times’ profile of the program comes at a time when Planned Parenthood is facing increasing scrutiny and battles over public funding. Last week, the organization found itself at the center of a “gendercide” controversy when a pro-life group released a video allegedly showing a Planned Parenthood counselor in Texas giving advice on how to obtain a gender-based abortion.

Margaret Sanger rotting in Hell must be SO proud one of her genocide clinics is actually in a LA high school, what better way for them to wipe out the minorities there. and after all these years, how totally stupid of the minorities not to realize the ultimate democrat plan is the total genocide of the black and brown races by abortion and birth control.

They claim to be concerned about the health of these teens. Yet, they will put them on medication without their parent’s knowledge putting them at a greater risk of medical consequences. As someone who experienced problems with hormonal contraception, I know firsthand that everyone‘s bodies don’t respond the same way to the “pill.” And to start them on this when they are already experiencing hormonal surges of puberty seems like a recipe for medical problems and potential lawsuits.
So, if anything happens to one of these girls and the hospital needs to know what medications she’s on, mom and dad won’t know. Or, what if she happens to be on other drugs and cannot be on the pill for health reasons. Not to mention, the horrid side effects some women experience when on the pill, such as blood clots, mood swings/depression, and the potential for long-term effects of hormonal contraception.

I couldn’t agree more. I took birthcontrol from the age of 16. It was the worst thing ever. It damaged six of my organs, the disease spread further. I got cysts, fibroid tumors, a fatty liver, depression, massive weight gain and gallbladder disease. Once I stopped, about six months later, most of the symptoms cleared up, but now I am stuck with a messed up body, which has costs thousands to repair. People shouldn’t play God unless they understand how hormones work. They’re not good for everyone.

HHS can get the school all the condoms they could ever want – what gives?!

That is way out of control! So if the Church of Death & Destruction, I’m sorry, not PC enough, Planned Parenthood, can co-exist with the school system, Why can’t the Church of Life be present too – Liberals got an answer?! Its bad enough that PP is a few blocks away…. but in the school???

I think someone had better move this PP – I feel a Supreme Court Case coming on.

After all, a child that is guided to kill a baby after having un-educated sex must be a victim of some kind?
Is there not Any child protection service we could pay to avoid paying for the crime? Oh yes I must have forgotten… Killing Field 101 is a program! Sad credits at the end.

if parents are legally responsible for their children until the age of 18, I say the parents who find out their child is having unprotected sex, became pregnant, and the school enabled the “child” to abort the “grandchild”, I say aborted Grandma should sue the school district….

not sure if “kicking” or “inviting” imaginary contrived concepts like gods and devils is what the problem is… morals don’t come from supernaturalism.. Where were the morals of the crusaders? where are the morals of catholic priests? cant get any bigger god fans than them…

Just incase you return … I bet you really factually know very little about the crusaders, and if you do and it would be a correct account, one instance does not disprove the whole.
As far as the “catholic” preists … probably almost none of them are “ christians” and if one had a chance to personally ask them some basic questions it would be telling.

You use the same old worn out lies of the devil. You speak with his spirit as you deny his spirit, at the same time you accuse others of being deceived, while it is you who is such. Do you really want to live you’re entire life as a deceived person?

Here’s a thought how about returning to teaching MORALS to our kids instead of sex classes that hightens their couriousity about sex instead of sex ed morals ed do away with paying for abortions and illegitimate babies if the kids or their parents were to be held responsibile for their kids actions I bet there would be less pregnancy in high schools

Good. I would rather have teens get access to condoms and emergency contraception before they get pregnant and drop out. Also HPV vaccines, pap smears, general gyno stuff. It is good to start early, because healthy habits start at that age. Getting used to going to the lady doctor is a good thing.

Honestly, do you really think teens are going to be responsible enough to take the pill the way they’re supposed to?? What the hell are the colors of the clouds in your world?? Why do you think there are so many pregnancies aborted?? It’s not because of the “Pill” failure, it’s because of USER FAILURE!
