‘I Could Say I Rented an Apartment From the President’: College Students Surprised to Discover Their Landlord Is…

Did you know that former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum owns and rents five State College apartments to Penn State students?
If that’s news to you, you’re not alone: very few of the apartment tenants know that the Republican presidential candidate is their landlord.
Students Lucy Barnhart and Shannon Kane didn’t even know who Santorum was – let alone the fact that he owns their apartment, writes Jessica Weber for the Collegian Online.
Another tenant, Emma Martin actually knew who Santorum was (it’s a start!) but also didn’t know that he was her landlord.
“I didn’t think that someone running for president would be the landlord of this small apartment in State College,” Martin told Weber.
Jamie Long, yet another tenant living in a Santorum-owned apartment, had no idea the former senator was his landlord.
“Wow,” he said when he found out a presidential candidate own his apartment, “That’s pretty interesting.”
Mallory Kern, a Penn State senior, has been renting out one of the apartments for the last two years.

Mallory Kern, left, and Alex Smith, both Penn State seniors, study Tuesday in their apartment at Beaver Plaza. The apartment is owned by GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum. Christopher Weddle CENTRE DAILY TIMES
“I knew he was our landlord, I just didn’t think much about it,” she said, adding that it would be “nuts” if he were elected president.
“Then I could say I rented an apartment from the president,” she said.
Property Manager Mark Bigatel said Santorum is “one of the better owners and ‘always’ updates the apartments.”
“He takes such good care, because he is a real proud Penn State alumni,” Bigatel said.
Each of the condominiums net Santorum between $15,000 and $50,000 annually and each is worth between $100,000 and $250,000, according to the Centre Daily Times.

The video clearly reveals that when the topic was broached and the camera shot opened up, Santorum was the only person on that stage whom did NOT applaud Specter’s pro-choice stance. Santorum recently admitted during a debate that he supported Specter primarily because he sat on the judiciary committee. he furthermore added that politics is a team sport. Ergo, just because he supported Specter‘s ’96 presidential bid, doesn’t necessarily mean that he also supports the wanton slaughtering of defenseless babies in the womb or the concocted progressive notion of the so-called “separation of church and state”. That’s a huge leap, pal. Moreover, IT IS LYING. You’ve been exposed. Epic fail.

The Republican Party establishment told me he was more elecatble and that it was for the “good of the party”. I accepted that rationale and supported him. It was a mistake. I won’t make that mistake again, and I encourage all Americans to avoid making the mistake of supporting the moderate, establishment supported candidate because they say he’s electable. Posted on March 3, 2012 at 12:39amAt Senator Arlen Specter’s official presidential campaign announcement in March 1996, then-Senator Rick Santorum showed his public support and encouragement of Specter by sitting directly next to him as Specter denounced the GOP’s war on abortion. It was at this event that Specter proclaimed his total opposition to social conservatism and declared he is in fact running to make the GOP pro-choice.

Just because someone says a few things you disagree with doesn‘t mean you don’t listen to anything they say. Specter did say a lot of things that I would clap for, and so would you if you are honest. ” with Santorum seen nodding and applauding at Specter’s side” is just an outright lie and a really bad attempt at a smear. Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:35pmExcuse me! I am a landlord. It is part of my retirement savings. When Obama got elected I pulled all of our retirement out of my IRA and instead put it down on a rental house in a college town. Was the smartest thing I ever did. The IRA plummeted! Bought the rental property in a down market and the tenants make the mortgage payment. In 30 years when I am ready to retire it will be paid off. $1800 a month is better return than most retirement plans and certainly better than social security. Not all landlords are what you picture. Every truly successful person I know has income property in there portfolio. It is smart investing.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:07pm@3MONKEY – You are right, you don’t get it. I’m not criticizing his business, or his right to do business. You need to look at what he has said over the last 10 days about college educations. It’s easy to find. He was doing it to fire up a conservative base that seems to think that all higher education is a waste of time and money. Many people in the press called out his hypocrisy, and wondered why he would even say such a thing. It was a major gaffe.
It’s about putting the puzzle pieces together. One should be careful about what one criticizes in life. Santorum had a tendency to not think things through before he gets spouts off. He has done this with people who have criticized his record, only to shortly prove that the criticisim was justified and the charges true. Typical of a Senator. Not something we need for a president.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:11pm@GTrissel – Until we know how involved he is in the management of the property, it could be that it is something that is in his portfolio. If someone else is handling the day-to-day operations and business through an outsourcing agreement, then it is just another item in his investment portfolio. If he runs it like a business, that is another matter all together, and he would have small business experience.
You need to remember that he lives in Virginia, and has been on the campaign trail for a while. I doubt he is managing the properties. Probably just signing off on needed improvements, and other expenditures required to run the property.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:21pm@USAMAMA – You don’t get it. It’s about what Santorum says, and what he is/does. In his campaign speeches, Santorum says what the crowd wants him to say in order to win the hearts and minds of conservatives and/or Tea Party types. Yet his record speaks to something else. Hence my initial post.
If you read the comments on The Blaze article a week ago about what Santorum said about college, you get a pretty good idea of the crowd he is trying to mobilize and fire up. Most of these people do not place any value on higher education, and the Federal Student Loan system.
To really lay it out clearly so that all understand… Santorum really does not line up with the values of the people who purport to support him. Neither does Newt Gingrich, yet the Tea Party loved him and put their support behind him because he is the anti-Romney.

Posted on March 2, 2012 at 11:30pm@USAMOMA – And one more thing. It’s ridiculous to assume that Santorum (or any other real estate holder) is renting to college students to help encourage independence and responsibility. A rental contract is a business transaction between a tenant and a landlord. Most real estate owners are not in that business to encourage people to be more independent and responsible. It is to make money.
If I were in the same position, I would also be looking to make money off of my investment. The best way to do that is to add value to your property, be able to charge a higher rent, attract a higher calibre tenant, and take care of the property and the tenants in a way that they would want to stay. This is business. Not a social responsibility issue. From the comments in the article, Santorum seems to be doing this. No criticism from me on that.
