Usually Internet deaths are localized issues, like a tree falling on a cable line or your modem not working. But this morning, the Internet died for many customers across the country and Time Warner Cable seems to be taking ownership.
The problem is apparently resolved and seems short-lived, but customers are being told to connect again.
According to Time Warner Cable’s website, the company serves high speed data services to about 9.7 million residential and commercial customers. According to Business Insider, outages were reported in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Raleigh, N.C., Dallas and New York so far. Business Insider also reports that the outage flashed off for about 30 seconds.
Silicon reports that some Internet service providers in the United Kingdom were also affected and as to what happened:
Several of the affected companies blamed the downtime on a problem with the firmware in Juniper Network routers.
“This outage has affected other networks running Juniper routers with the majority of them seeing their devices core dump and reload,” affected ISP Phyber Communications said.
The problems at several of the ISPs appear to stem from the Juniper routers being reset at tier one network provider Level3, which routes internet traffic between the US, the UK and the rest of the world.
“Shortly after 9am ET today, Level 3′s network experienced several outages across North America and Europe relating to some of the routers on our network,” Level3 said.
“Our technicians worked quickly to bring systems back online. At this time, all connection issues have been resolved, and we are working hard with our equipment vendors to determine the exact cause of the outage and ensure all systems are stable.”
The Twittersphere was hot on the story this morning with one report of the outage lasting 20 minutes. There is also speculation that other Internet service providers were affected as well, but this has not yet been confirmed.
CNET reports that this trouble, which apparently hit sometime after 6 a.m. Pacific Time, is not the first of late for Time Warner Cable:
A couple weeks ago, my Time Warner Cable Internet service went down for several minutes. Upon calling the company, I was told I needed to call back due to a large number of customers calling for support. A subsequent Twitter search at the time revealed that many people were without service both in my area and outside of it. Like today’s outage, that issue was quickly resolved.
CNET also suggests other providers could be involved in an outage, stating that RCN customers in Boston and Philadelphia were also experiencing Internet problems around the same time, but RCN has not yet publicly confirmed or denied an outage either way.
Stay tuned: This story will be updated as we get more information.
This story has been updated since its original posting to include more details at 1:07.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 10:45amI’m from upstate ny and shut down my comp off at 1:00 am, no problems at that point . I do have a minor concern, both Glenn Beck TV and The Blaze, freeze quite a bit on me, what’s curious is, no other sights or programs ever freeze my comp! With that said, I will freely admit to being paranoid when it comes anything with OBAMA AND HIS MERRY BAND OF CHICOGO THUGS. I don’t believe this nov9 test is really a test, and if so, then what is it a test for ? I’m telling the goverment now, LEAVE ME, MY FAMILY AND MY COMPUTER ALONE. Get ready people, IT”S TIME TO LOCK AND LOAD !

Also from upstate NY–I have DSL. Frontier just here to fix it–I only had half a “signal” they had to rewire form junction box to house. Have been freezing/locking since inception of GBTV but I have also had other video’s freeze. Had freezing at old house using Time Warner too!
Don’t know if affected by the “big problem,” got bumped off three times between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 11:47amFreezing up on my GBTV plus is so bad for me I usually watch the rerun later (still freezes but it restarts where it left off whereas on the live show I miss what it being discussed) , and I pay for a dedicated business DSL 400 mbps service so fast I can open a dozen utubes and seamlessly view them all at once. I could probably watch two dozen at once if I could get small enough windows. So speed of connection is not my problem. Either it is Glenn’s service or as you suspect GBTV is being severely interfered with. Also twice when I paid my $75 extreme account yearly fee, within a day my card has been hacked forcing me to hotcard it and get a new one. Two years in a row. Yet the hundreds of electronic parts purchases in most countries in the world each year have never resulted in a hotcard. Gee I wonder who but government (if card thieves then why is even Thailand safe to buy parts from but GBTV here is not safe to pay for) could get into my secure connection and why only when I pay for my insider extreme? How easy is it for a federal agency to hack my card after they see me pay Glenn and just exactly how many lists of conservatives do they have? Conspiracy is when you think it is going on. Reality is when you experience it going on.

Strange but I can get to blaze by proxy yet some say my IP is banned from the blaze, my browser says page is not there. I can get to it by proxy in one window at the same time my browser it does not exist in another. Clearly illegal things are going on by the powers in government targeting only their conservative ‘enemies’. Who do you call when the people you are supposed to call are the criminals?

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 12:26pmA lot of the freezing on video depends on the speed of your computer, your OS, and/or the frame rate that the video was created. On my XP machine, I had trouble viewing some video as it would buffer then play, buffer then play, sometimes it would not play at all. If the video allows you to change the rate, such as from 480p to 360p, then videos played fine. On my new PC I5 with Windows 7, this is not an issue.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 4:53pmIf it will ease the rampant paranoia that is demonstrated here (it’s really pretty bad), the word from the techoids is that was caused by a software update to the Juniper routers that caused an inadvertent core dump. Posted on November 7, 2011 at 7:32pmBe sure to file a tech support request with GBTV! I had problems, too, which emerged a month into their service. I kept getting replies to be sure your equipment complies with minimums. But, I kept complaining and they found something! I don’t know what–these guys have pulled off a miracle, from zero to full service in a heartbeat! Just keep reporting the problem and they will learn from it, isolate it, and deliver the high-quality they aspire to! Thankfully, all their program mateial is availble by archive, so aside from the inconvenience and uncertainty, the material isn‘t lost until ’reruns’! Kudos to the GBTV team!!!

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 7:50pmI have had the same issues with the GBTC stream. It isn’t due to out of date hardware, internet bandwidth available, or interfering browser add-ons. I have streamed on my laptop, home PC, and iPod Touch 2G. All have the same issues. I have used Netflix and Youtube at 720p and 1080p without issues beyond occasionally needing to wait for higher quality streams to buffer. You don’t get the wait for buffer ability with GBTV option because the stream keeps trying to adjust for real time play y adjusting image quality resulting in annoying hiccups, out of sync audio, and freezing. I also end up losing my place trying to restart the feed when the stream freezes because the slider bar doesn’t always tell you how much of the program has elapsed. I use both the latest versions of IE and Firefox with the same symptoms on both. Glenn choose an unreliable streaming provider plain and simple. I sent support tickets and despite providing very detailed information, all I got was a canned response that didn’t really address my complaint. Also they bill it as an HD stream which it clearly isn’t. At best it streams around 720×640 and at less than 30fps no where near the quality we got from Fox news(if received in HD) and looks terrible on an HDTV. The definition of what HD video is starts at 1280×720. I don’t believe they are taking the complaints seriously and I terminated my subscription after just a month as a result. I love the GBTV show but I won‘t pay for it if it doesn’t work.

YouTube has also changed the way they report searches. I once searched for “Ron Paul” clicked “by date” and had a nice list in chronological order. Now, I get all sorts of off-topic and conflicting reports. I think it‘s YouTube and Obama’s “too much information on internet” and forcing the search to include unrelated data that YouTube considers important.
It’s all censorship, no matter how one looks at it.

I recall the datastorms that hit the internet in the late 1990′s and would pull down entire segments of the nation, but those types of events were accounted for a long time ago. Posted on November 7, 2011 at 10:33amFrom Cincinnati to Canton, TW was out. Where I am, we are not on TW, so weren’t affected. I don’t think it was a conspiracy or anything, though. Shtuff happens, sometimes.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 10:41amThere is so much redundancy in all these networks that in order for all of it to go down, even just TW network requires intentional action. They slammed the door shut for some reason and its no conspiracy theory to recognize it. It is interesting that the day after tomorrow the first nationwide emergency alert is scheduled.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 10:28amWe are way to reliant on the internet and it will be our down fall if we don’t figure out how to protect it. Many power systems rely on the internet for switching and monitoring their grids. There are countless systems throughout our critical infrastructure that could be catastrophically affected.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 10:28amI don’t have Time Warner, but my internet acted up a few minutes into Glenn’s show. I rebooted my router and all was fine, but I lost my Glenn connection. I did not lose my VPN connection until I rebooted my router, so my internet must have slowed down greatly but not lost entirely. Weird, no coincidences, I trust no one anymore when it comes to garbage like this. Something is going on, but we will be lied to and 60% will believe it.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 4:27pmLive in Nebraska, don‘t have Time Warner and wasn’t on my computer this morning BUT have recently been having a lot of trouble logging into GBTV (and holding the connection) plus have been having trouble with “page not found” message when I try to log into the Blaze. Never had these problems previously – just the last couple weeks or so. Haven’t had this problem with any other sites that I frequent often. Wish we didn‘t live in times where one has to be so suspicious of ’unusual’ events. God Bless America and please watch over us. Stay safe my friends.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 5:38pmAn excuse will be given. They will deny an complicity with the outages and “BOOBUS AMERICANUS” will say,”Told you everything is okay.” When they do shut it all off what, exactly, will you people do? My only plan is to avoid people. After all, it is people who have given us this rose filled utopia. Just read The Turner Diaries and know your future. I ask again; “WHAT WILL YOU DO WHEN THEY SHUT DOWN ALL COMMUNICATIONS?” Don’t hesitate. Hesitation Kills. Enjoy

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 10:27amI have to agree, I was wondering why the Internet went down last night (northwest US). Now that everything is all connected up, we can expect to see more and more “outages” that require increased tax revenues to address. Legislation so government has a “back door”. A “safety net.” Work on hardening government communications (already well under way) while leaving civilian communications sufficiently weak and exposed. Get used to it, we’ll see more.
