‘Dirty Trick’?: Santorum’s Surprise Robocall to Michigan…Democrats?

Rick Santorum is pulling out all the stops in hopes of a Michigan victory. The former Pennsylvania Senator released a robocall today specifically targeted at Democratic/union voters in Michigan’s primary.

“On Tuesday, join Democrats who are going to send a loud message to Massachusetts Mitt Romney,” the ad says. “Romney supported the bailout for his billionaire buddies but opposed the auto bailout. That was a slap in the face to every Michigan worker.”

And if anyone is in any doubt as to the source of this ad, it ends with, “This ad is supported by hard-working Democratic men and women and paid for by Rick Santorum for President.”

The full robocall can be heard here:

This marks Santorum’s first attempt at picking up the “Reagan Democrats” , to whom he has repeatedly claimed he has the ability to appeal. Whether it will win support from conservatives is another story, as it arguably undercuts Santorum’s swipe at Romney in last week’s debate for “adopting the Occupy Wall Street rhetoric.”

Certainly Romney isn’t taking it lying down. The Associated Press reports that Romney has already slammed Santorum for the call:

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is accusing his main rival, Rick Santorum, of pulling a “dirty trick” by sponsoring a computerized phone call urging Michigan Democrats to vote against Romney in Tuesday’s Republican primary. [...]

The “robocall” going around Monday says Democrats should send “a loud message” to Romney by voting for Santorum. The message says it’s supported by “hard-working Democratic men and women” and paid for by the Santorum campaign.

Romney tells Fox News that the robocall sounds like it’s coming from organized labor, and he says the effort is confusing people and deceptive. Romney calls it “a new low” in the campaign.

No opposed both on same principle, Mitt supported one opposed the other…. So the question is what was the difference between the two for Mitt.

You know the correction under Paul would be a quick and brutal one right, the economy will collapse down to where it really should be. It’s not gonna be pretty and since it will happen faster under Paul then the rest of them (well Obama might do the same for different reasons) the social upheaval will be massive. (Our economy is addicted to government money you cant just cold turkey it, whats more there is several trillion bux they have to pull from the economy too. I fear Paul would do both rather quickly and not use government to ease the shock of the correction.) When people get in the streets rioting like “occupy” I worry Paul will just sit and watch till it’s to late.

      @Christhefarmer

You and I agree that there is going to be a day of reckoning, and I hold that driving us deeper in debt will only make it worse. The government easing the shock is what got us into this mess, and the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results…is it not? Having less debt to pay back is certainly the better choice in the long run.

Also there would be a great deal of money saved by simply placing the welfare state in the hands of the states where it belongs in the first place, as cutting the middlemen in Washington out of the picture would save BILLIONS in bureaucracy that is completely wasted.

Paul is also the only candidate who understands the founders and the need for sound money. We are currently wasting 4 billion a week just to service this insane debt. All of the others will only compound the problem.

There is a very good reason the powers that be just passed the NDAA…because they KNOW what’s coming. Romney goes right along with this Bill of Rights shredding insanity and this clearly demonstrates the fact that he has ZERO respect for the founders wisdom. Same goes for Santorum by the way. How anyone could trust someone who willingly spits on the Bill of Rights is beyond my level of comprehension, as it shows just how evil such a person really is.

In the end doing the right thing will be painful, but it is far less painful than compounding the problem while destroying the Constitution.

A failed attempt to replicate the “Blue Republican” movement. This is actually a Liberal trick. You get the Pro-Obama democrats to vote for the weakest link (Santorum). This way it becomes a cake walk for re-election. OTOH, You NEED to recruit the “disinfranchised” democrats and youth, who are NOT for Obama, to vote on the republican ticket. Only ONE candidate does this authentically and its NOT Santorum.

Now, with bigotry of religion, I have witnessed it more than I care to say, making me have to reconsider just how many racist are on the right. But he has also stated that it was mishandled by Bush and Obama. TRUTH: If TARP hadn’t happened, Wall Street fat cats would have been fine. You and I? The common folk? Our piddly dollars would have been worth crap – we would be the ones hurting. No, Romney supported TARP to save the low and middle class people of America, not to line the pockets of Wall Street. It really is amazing. The sad thing is, Santorum could have not released this robocall and still got the Democrats to turn out. The DNC has been running against Mitt Romney in the state, too.

Santorum just might win MI, but he will lose the nomination because of this tactic. Republicans in other states will not take kindly to this.

Finally, it really is amazing that Mitt Romney has done so well. The MSM, the Right Wing media (Rush, Levin, Beck, most of the rest of talk radio, and FoxNews), the DNC, his Republican opponents all are against Mitt. They have spewed lie after lie (such as he’s a moderate, he’s a flip-flopper, he’s for gun control – all lies), and yet he prevails. Beck may have agreed with Santorum that ol’ Rick feels God is behind him, but he certainly hasn’t had to fight the fight Mitt Romney has waged since 2007. (Obama had attacked Romney in 2009 on his impending run for the Presidency.)

To be fair, according to a report released in January, the news media journalists and pundits (Fox included) have been positive towards Mitt a good 28% of the time. Of course, the other 72% of the time has been negative reporting and commentary. Even Gingrich had had more positive reporting on him (52 – 48).

      @MARTINEZ012577

Romney is pro-2nd Amendment. Just look at his voting record. See http://www.aboutmittromney.com for clarification and complete context

Romney has said he was a progressive in 2002. And he was right, he progressed the state of MA from a $3 billion debt to a $2 billion surplus. But he did not mean that has a liberal progressive.

Romney’s flip-flops. Those points are laughable. See my previously linked site. Plus, fact checkers have reviewed many of these and determined he is not a flip-flopper. Now, you could say Romney has “flipped” on some things, but he has gotten MORE conservative, not less.

Romney is pro-life. In 1994 he stated “Despite my personal opinion, I will not change the abortion law.” In fact, his stance should agree with your position as a libertarian – Romney did not support government’s intrusion on a personal decision. However, when it came down to it, after Romney studied it out, he voted for life. His actions do count.

Romney on the NDAA. This is the one of the very few sticking points I have with Romney. However, this is rearranging deck chairs while the house is on fire. That is, we are in a dire financial situation. This is something that Romney can and will solve if given the chance. I am sure if he studies it more, he will repeal it.

Looking at Santorum, he also stated he was not pro-life, he also called himself a progressive, he actually voted for earmarks and grew the national debt.

Romney is pro second amendment? You obviously don’t understand the 2nd amendment or the founders intensions then.

“We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them,” he said. “I won’t chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety.”
      Mitt Romney

      http://www.awareandprepare.com/mitt-romney-and-his-stance-on-gun-control/

Taxachusetts has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, so no matter how you spin this Romney is no friend to gun owners nor of those who understand “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.”

Also, when Santorum said he was a progressive, he meant it…and when Romney said the same thing, he didn’t? What a laughable position.

Your so called fact checkers need to check their facts.

Here’s Al Gore praising Romney on “Global warming”.

      http://blog.algore.com/2011/06/good_for_mitt_romney_though_we.html

Romney, Jan. 14. 2008: “I’m not willing to sit back and say too bad for Michigan, too bad, too bad for the car industry.”
Romney, June 3, 2011: “That’s exactly what I said…. ‘Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.’”.

Romney is a Bill of Rights trashing charlatan who will say anything at any time to fool those with short memories.

Ron Paul actually has a consistent record that has opposed all of this progressive nonsense, and he also stands firmly against the NDAA.

You should really reconsider your supports for Romney the flip flopper.

Well Freedom pretty much crushed your response for me, and you must think I want Santorum. I dont want a progressive, a globalist, or a social engineer, or a black liberation marxist in the white house.

I will vote for a Constitution following libertarian. RON PAUL 2012!!!

Amen Amen Amen to all of that. It amazes me how blind people are to truth. Here is a great website that has a ton of honest and truthful things, a very well and in depth information about Romney… http://teapartyforromney.com/

@Martinez: I know you are a Paul fan, which is why I referenced you as a libertarian. I respect you for that. But Freedum, didn’t destroy my argument… let’s follow:

      1. Romney supports gun restrictions? Well, let’s look at context shall we?
      http://aboutmittromney.com/gun_rights.htm
      http://aboutmittromney.com/gun_myths_part2.htm
You are right, MA has VERY restrictive gun controls. Romney actually signed a bill supported by both the NRA and GOAL that reduced those restrictions.

      2. Romney/Santorum claiming progressivism. Actually, you make my point. You can‘t call out Romney’s words for calling himself a progressive when Santorum did the same thing. Of course, if you support Paul, then you can call them both Progressives. I‘d counter that Santorum’s *actions* show that he is fiscally progressive, while Romney’s *actions* show he is neither fiscally nor socially progressive.

      3. Al Gore can praise Romney all he wants. What I do know is that Romney has stated umpteen times, and has it written in his book, that while he is unsure whether global warming is man made, he is NOT going to put American jobs at risk for the sake of politically motivated science.

      4. I disagree with your characterization of Romney. But we are all free to our opinions.

George Washington was an honest man and slow to anger. Santorum is not nearly comparable to George Washington. Santorum basicaly cannot hide his natural side by simply embracing the devil’s technique to win the election. Where is the conservatism that he claims to have? What moral principles and values that he stands for? As far as this nasty robocalls is concerned, Santorum has sold himself cheap.

Michigan is the biggest state with a true open primary. He probably would have gotten even more votes out of an ad telling liberal Democrats to vote for him because he has less chance than Romney of going the distance against Obama. Of course, it would have to be an ad from a PAC that people might not recognize as being his, not one directly paid for by the Santorum campaign; it wouldn’t do for the actual campaign committee to publicly acknowledge that he has no chance in the general election.

So Santourm turns to Democrats to win in Michigan?! Does he think those same Democrats will support him in November?! I can think of nothing dirtier than turning to the other side to win an election!

It worked for Reagan. It may well work here. These people actually want somone who hasn’t changed their mind on every major issue in the first year of their election attempts. I don’t like the wording of thecall either but I get the point. He could always pull the Ron Paul arguement and say he never heard it.

@Samuel: Do you know anything about Santorum’s record? In the 70′s, 80′s, and early 90′s he was very much against Reagan and stood with Democrats most of the time. He became a Republican, changed to a Pro-Life stance (he wasn’t before), and became a good Conservative representative. Then the longer he was in DC the more corrupt he got. And now he voted for Planned Parenthood bills, bridges to nowhere, and other pet projects – getting named one of the 3 most corrupt Republicans. He got booted and went to K Street to wallow in the mire with the Washington insiders.

What a turncoat! So Santorum cannot win Michigan without the help of Democrats? And does he think those democrats would support him in November?! I cannot imagine anything dirtier than turning to the other side to win an election! Santorum has no moral!

I think if George Washington knew that Rick Santorum was being compared to him, he would roll over in his grave.

A life that was lived with such honor and valor should NOT be compared to this.
