Discovery Channel‘s ’Frozen Planet‘ Won’t Blame Man-Made Global Warming — And Enviros are Upset

Since mid-March, Americans with access to the Discovery Channel on Sunday evenings have perhaps been tuning in to the wildlife documentary “Frozen Planet.” The series finale was extended to end on Earth Day — Sunday, April 22 — with its final episode detailing the effects of climate change on the harsh yet fragile ecosystem of the Arctic.

(Related: ‘Frozen Planet’ premiers in U.S. with ‘amazing natural drama’ — climate change rhetoric to follow)

According to environmentalists and some scientists though, there was something missing from last night’s episode “On Thin Ice.” That is, what is causing these effects.

On Friday, the New York Times reported the show was being criticized by some in these groups for being too accommodating and “afraid” of upsetting “dismissives,” or those who don’t consider global warming a man-made problem:

“Many organizations, and it sounds like Discovery is one of them, appear to be more afraid of being criticized by climate change ‘dismissives’ than they are willing to provide information about climate change to the large majority of Americans who want to know more about it,” said Anthony Leiserowitz, the director of the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication.

[...]

“It’s kind of like doing a powerful documentary about lung cancer and leaving out the part about the cigarettes,” said Bill McKibben, a scholar and climate change activist. “There’s no scientific mystery here: the poles are changing because we’re burning so much carbon.”

The Times reports series producer Vanessa Berlowitz saying they did not include a cause to climate change one way or the other because it “would have undermined the strength of an objective documentary, and would then have become utilized by people with political agendas.” She told the Times they didn’t want people saying “‘Don’t watch this show because it has a slant on climate change.’”

Discovery President Eileen O’Neill is reported as emphasizing the fact this was a natural history documentary. Even David Attenborough who narrated the final episode of “Frozen Planet” — actor Alec Baldwin narrated the pervious six of the series in the U.S. — leaves some questions open for debate:

Shown standing at the North Pole, Mr. Attenborough told viewers: “The days of the Arctic Ocean being covered by a continuous sheet of ice seem to be past. Whether or not that’s a good or bad thing, of course, depends on your point of view.”

Mr. Attenborough then noted the new opportunities for energy exploitation and commercial shipping. But he did not note that the vast majority of scientists believe that human activities are contributing to the warming trends evident there.

Others have weighed in on what wasn’t said in the series in comments and on Twitter, including singer and actress Bette Midler.

Frozen Planet Leaves Causes of Global Warming Out of SeriesStill, it should be noted that the majority of comments and tweets on the series were positive and focused on the stunning footage of the environment and wildlife imagery.

What do you think? Was Discovery and BBC, which also co-produced the series, correct to leave discussion over the cause of climate change out of the series?

Agreed …. I am glad they did not discredit the show by accusing man of being powerful enough to change the climate… a COW produces more “green house gasses” then my gas guzzling SUV!!!!
The communists are the ones pushing the warming agenda that has no scientific basis. This is now and has always been about power and control. If they can convince the dumb masses they are killing the earth then they can regulate what we do and how we do it to protect the planet.
I do however agree that we can pollute an area by dumping our crap on the ground or in the water but an area is not the planet…. We do need to be good stewards of what we have but this has become the road to tyranny not about stewardship of resources.
Glad they are making an attempt at honesty it is refreshing :)

Sometimes the funded ones slip up and the truth comes out…

OTTMAR EDENHOFER: “First of all, developed countries have basically expropriated the atmosphere of the world community. But one must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy. Obviously, the owners of coal and oil will not be enthusiastic about this. One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole.”

For the record, Edenhofer was co-chair of the IPCC’s Working Group III, and was a lead author of the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report released in 2007

The problem with the “lung cancer / man-made global warming” analogy is that it is a proven fact that smoking can cause cancer. However, Man-made global warming is a theory backed up by bull-ship pseudo science and relies on misinformation and down right fabrication of “facts” to prove what cannot be proved…a negative. You can’t prove someone murdered someone if the victim is sitting in the court room, eh?

The problem with the left and Mrs. Anthony Leiserowitz is they want to misuse every piece of research that is put forward to further thier cause, and if it doesn’t support said cause, they want it changed to do so or stricken from the record. That failing they will attack with a vengeance what they do not like, regardless of the science behind it…

      Typical.

      ____________________________

Tobacco companies still deny the link since it takes decades for lung cancer to develop and non-smokers develop lung cancer. They can muddy the waters, obfuscate, and question the scientific research so that they never have to actually come clean on the dangers of their product.

It is infinitely easier for the man-made global warming deniers to essentially do the same thing since the time scales are geological and there is natural variation in atmospheric temperatures. Despite this there overwhelming agreement among the vast majority of scientists that the earth is warming and burning fossil fuels is the cause.

Global Warming is a made for scam for the left.

All they have to do is get a few pin-heads in academia to produce some papers that claim to have discovered that the planet is being destroyed by SUV’s and they have their issue. Something to use to gain control of governments with the help of a few high placed devotees and a complaint media.

Their problem lies in the fact they can’t prove it!
Lots of theories, but then when people start to understand the cost of their theories, and start looking for some proof, they find lies. Distorted data, false data, omitted data, all in the name of saving the planet. (And getting your moeny.)

It got so bad they had to drop the Global Warming for climate change!
Now really, when hasn’t the climate been changing?
We used to call it the seasons, now they say we need to stop using fossil fuels, because we have seasons. Some seasons are warmer or cooler then usual! Only they may decide what is ‘usual’.

IMHO if these saviors of our climate want another tax dollar, they MUST provide actual proof of the ability to use those dollars to ‘improve’ the climate. No proof no dollars. JMO

Global warming. Meh, I honestly don‘t it’s a man made problem. The Wold climate always changes, at on point it is believed that North Africa was once a vast jungle. At other points Antartica was once a habital land mass. And of course every 10,000-20,000 yrs we end up with a new ice age. Our last one was, what 10,000 yrs ago give or take, and now the planet is starting to heat up little and the polar ice have melted a little bit? The planet is still thawing an so yeah we’re warming up a little, but technically speaking the planet has warming up since the end our last ice age.

Before the first “iceage” melted, all that is now “above-water” was underwater…all that is underwater was above-water. As the earth cooled-all-over , it shrunk, rinkled, and cracked, and wrose-and-fell. Water condensed, evaporated, rained-down, and saught it’s own level, flowing into dips and cracks in earth’s surface(ever-changing). The shrinking caused the molton(very-HOT) minerals to squeeze-out to the surface(mountains for those in reolinda)…the largest active volcano in the world=Yellowstone! It’s agenda is still in the forefront…boiling, roilling, heaving… .

Actually, we have mini-ice ages & warm periods in different parts of the world every few hundred year. There was an ice age in North America & Europe in the 19th century: people skated on the frozen Thames, it was possible to sleigh from Manhattan to Staten Island across the frozen Hudson River, Germany – literature & old records are filled w/ descriptions of the excessive cold. During the “middle ages,” there was another ice age. On the other hand, warm periods during the past millennium allowed the Vikings to place settlements on Greenland & travel to North America; not so many years ago we experienced several extremely warm years when the el nino tide had a powerful affect on the weather. The is a living planet in the sense that it is in constant change & growth. Great climate changes usually do occur in 10 – 20 thousand year cycles but smaller changes occur over much briefer periods.

I do wish the anthropomorphic climate change scaremongers would stop shouting because we need to be prepared & help those who need it prepare for colder & warmer periods. The scaremongers are anti-human. We need to accept the earth changes & ask what we need to do to care for ourselves & our less fortunate neighbours.t

The Barbarians, Attila, Khan, the Moslem hordes and the Vikings raping and pillaging, and burning villages, coupled with the Greeks, Persians and Romans duking it out, burning ships and cities, put excessive CO2 in the air, causing the Northern Poles to melt, creating the legendary “Northern Passage” allowing the Chinese to sail over the top of North America and Vikings to raid Northern port villages in Russia in November. This is not to mention the American Indians driving around in their Mustangs and dancing around fires.

Avengerk – wow, all i said is that this program, and many others like it (Life, Planet Earth) are brilliant. i personally believe that man is the cause of global warming, but that’s b/c i’ve actually looked at the data (peer reviewed) and i tend to believe the scientists, who incidentally, toil in obscurity and do not drive fancy cars and live in mansions. there’s not a lot of money to be made in Science, but there sure is in denial – i.e. Glenn Beck, Koch Bros., Rush Limbaugh, ALEC.

regardless, admitting warming is the first step. it‘s not unreasonable to disbelieve in man’s role in this as the Science is far from finished. most evidence, and logic, show that releasing millions of years of “fossil fuels” into the environment in the geological blink of an eye is not helping our planet, and likely adding if not fueling (pun intended) Global Warming. hey, if you can at least admit that the Earth is warming it’s a start.

I don‘t think it’s all manmade, that’s an incredibly arrogant view that man alone can cause such great changes on such a large scale. But like throwing a dried out piece of cedar on a bonfire, man’s addition to the global heating cycles is a small part of something much bigger than global warming paranoiacs want anyone to believe, yet it doesn’t make that much difference in the heat of the fire.
Since I don‘t know what’ll happen tomorrow, or the day after, it’s too soon to tell if this changing weather is good, bad or indifferent. I just want to be around to find out.

I had pegged this as more global warming propaganda to legitimize raping the American people from the start and didn’t bother to watch any of it.

I actually watched this this weekend, it was on the Chanel so I let it run. I commented to my wife ,once I had watched a bit ,my surprise that it left the issue alone for the most part. I enjoyed the program, which surprised me,

At least the folks at Discovery are courageous enough to accept the truth that we don’t know of any actual effect of CO2 emissions on the environment. There are lots of people willing to toss out poor correlations, but actual evidence is surprisingly missing.

We do know how clouds affect the environment, though. And we know what makes clouds. And we know what controls the things that makes clouds. The answer to all of these questions involves many words, but “humans” and “CO2” are not included.

The climate has changed constantly for millions of years, so humans didn’t create that. However, in recent times, what certain lying humans have done, is invent the conspiracy to lie about climate change, and use it as a political tool to control and subjugate others.

I saw a show about mining in the Bolivian desert for Rare Earth minerals. They dug through layers in the desert that indicated that it was once jungle with heavy vegitation. Thousands of years ago the jungle turned to desert, long before the use of fossil fuels. Did alien SUVs once roam the Earth?

I had an environmental history prof. who said there was a 111K warming : 89K cooling trend that has existed for millions of years, using ice cores samples as evidence. (Ohio State stores many of the samples) He said we’re supposed to be on a cooling trend, but temps are rising. He was actually fairly conservative for a history prof, so wouldn’t rush to any judgements about wheter or not it was man-made. Dude was sharp. 3 Ph.Ds. Evironmental history, Physics and Math. I wish there were more like him, because as sharp as he was, he still would say, “I don’t know”. I‘m pretty sure if he doesn’t know… neither does anyone else. Regardless, even if they did, there’s nothing ethical that can be done about it.

Yep, rising 1.5 degrees over the last 50 years. I don‘t deny it’s rise, just the proposed cure.
