‘Discriminates Against a Population’: Boston Mayor Vows to Block Chick-fil-A From City

BOSTON (The Blaze/AP) — The mayor of Boston is vowing to block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant near the city’s “Freedom Trail” because of the company’s stance on gay marriage.

“Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston. You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion,” Mayor Thomas M. Menino told the Boston Herald Thursday.

“That’s the Freedom Trail. That’s where it all started right here. And we’re not going to have a company, Chick-fil-A or whatever the hell the name is, on our Freedom Trail,” he added.

Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press this week that his privately owned company is “guilty as charged” in support of what he called the biblical definition of the family.

Of course, people flipped out and the company was eventually forced to issue an official statement on its position.

“The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect — regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender,” the company said in a statement.

“Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.”

But, apparently, that’s not good enough for Boston’s Menino who says he’s going to contact the comapny’s main office and tell them exactly how he feels.

“If they need licenses in the city, it will be very difficult — unless they open up their policies,” he threatened.

This isn’t the first time Menino has turned a business away. He blocked Walmart from putting in a development in 2011 because of the store’s supposed “impact on neighborhood businesses and lower-wage workers.”

And it looks like he’s set to do the same to Chick-fil-A.

“It doesn’t send the right message to the country. We’re a leader when it comes to social justice and opportunities for all,” Menino said, utterly oblivious to the irony of his statement.

Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A has more than 1,600 stores nationwide but just two in Massachusetts, both located in suburban malls.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Hey MONK, My question is just how does the Cathy family and Chick-Fil-A discriminate against anybody when the CEO merely states that he does not believe in gay marriage? Anybody seen any “No Homosexual Allowed” signs posted at any of their restaurants? Or “We Treat Gays Differently”? No, nothing of the kind, when questioned he spoke from his heart. No hate was displayed….well, except on the left.

      Hi RJJ,

That Mayor is probably thinking that he doesn’t hire gay people and/or that he should be open on Sundays and not respect the (Sunday) Sabbath.

Mr. Cathy should relocate the stores and the employees (at his cost) to a more Christian friendly town. I’m sure most of the employees would be happy to leave Boston. I know I would.

On the bright side, I am sure there are other communities around Boston that would love to have a Chick-fil-A in their town. Just think of the jobs and the boost to the economy.

They are not refusing to sell chicken sandwiches to a population. This is absurd. If Truett Cathy decides he will not do business on Sunday, what next? He is discriminating against a day of the week.

I am frankly surprised that Chick-fil-A has not been sued by PETA for making torturing cows making them work on billboards without safety gear and keeping them at war with the chickens.

We need MORE people with integrity running businesses (and quite successfully I might add) like Cathy and Chick-fil-A and not less. This has been a man and a business that has always been blessed with success because they would not bow down to PC and sacrifice their morals and ethics. What the right thing to do and what is ethical should always be the same thing but what is moral does not always fit in with business ethics. It is quite difficult to walk that line but he does it nicely. They may discriminate against cows and are obviously guilty of that but taking a stance on gay marriage is not discriminating against gays. That is absurd. Not liking the color “red” does not mean that you would never find a use for it or put it in your skittles rainbow. I say we should EET MOR CHIKN!

Chik-fil-A didn’t discriminate against anyone. They simply chose not to support them.

Even if they did discriminate, each human being discriminates thousands of times a day. To discriminate is to make a choice, to favor one thing over something else. How do the Communists keep making perfectly legitimate words into “un-words”, words that are somehow bad?

The mayor of Boston is clearly a Communist. Boston should keep him.

resistance to tyranny is obedience to God and they held that Religion ,Morality and Knowledge were necessary to good Government and the happiness of mankind.(Twice passed Northwest Ordinance) And note fornication/Sodomy was an infamous Crime punishable by death when we were One Nation Under God.

Discrimination against a company because their core beliefs do not agree with a city’s degenerate members is still discrimination. The company should sue for equal protection against storm troopers in the guise of mayors attempt to coerece them into accepting what everyone knows is aberrant behavior. They never refused to serve a homosexual that I know of. If a business must be punished for the belief of its owners, we must close up every Muslim-run business since their beliefs are not in agreement with the Constitution.

This is a country that has a right to believe whatever they want, and as Christians we believe that homosexuality is a “sin” and so does God. If I want to open a business and what I believe about what my God says about a peticular sin causes my business not to open then that is reverse discremination, and if I were Chic-file I think I wouldn’t even want my business in that town, especially with a mayor that is such a bigot himself, or i’d file a discremenation law suite against Boston. Again we see the power and tension between worldviews. The secular/atheistic worldview and the religuous/traditional worldview. The gulf grows wider and the antimosity intensifies. Going forward in this country are probably several basic worldviews that will compete with each other for dominance. Some will combine forces if they perceive a common enemy only to turn on each other later when that enemy is weakened. This is my list of what to lQQk for.

I’m not discriminating against them, I talk to them, I live next door to them, I support their belief in pro life.
Chic-fil-a owner never said they weren’t welcomed in his store. He never said he didn’t want to serve them. So since when is a difference of opinion, discrimination?

The left have lost their ever lovin’ minds. They are continuing to grasp at straws to cry foul against those who believe and think differently. They expect us to say yes it is an acceptable livestyle, and if we do not we are wrong and biggots for thinking differently.

As long as your rules apply to all discrimination, I may agree, however it seem all one sided. I also wonder if you would have any businesses or enterprise left in Boston under your rules. Just because a person refuses to recognize the union between a man and a man or a woman and a woman as “marriage” dosn’t mean they discriminate against homosexuals, it just means they oppose the union between homosexuals being classified as “marriage.” Nothing wrong with that is there? What happened to FREE speech or is free speech just another cover for the spirit of antichrist to say what he wants? “Marriage” has for literally thousands of years been understood all around the world as meaning the union between one man and one woman, and now in a short period of time we‘re supposed to understand that we’ve been wrong all along and it means something else? Uh, uh. Not so fast, my friend. Do what you want in private but don’t ask me to accept as normal what is clearly an aberration. If you are “a leader when it comes to social justice and opportunities for all” and say things like “Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston. You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion”, then are you not being a hypocrite? What you really meant to say is Boston has sided with the “gay marriage agenda” and opposes those who do not accept the gay marriage agenda. If you are open minded you accept both sides of the coin, if you are closed minded then you accept just the one.

DO YOU REALLY THINK YOU KNOW MORE ABOUT CONSTITUTIONAL LAW THAN AN APPELLATE COURT JUDGE?———————-The ruling on Thursday by a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, based in Boston, marked the first time a federal appellate court had ruled against the 1996 law, which excludes same-sex couples from federal benefits accorded heterosexual married couples. (like being allowed to filed joint tax returns and to receive Social Security survivor payments).

The case was heard by two judges nominated by Republican presidents and one Democratic nominee. It involved married couples in Massachusetts, which is among the handful of states where gay couples may lawfully wed. The marriage law was being defended by lawyers hired by the Republican majority in the House

(paid for by U.S. taxpayers including the gay ones, and why in an era of austerity???)

after the Obama administration finally acknowledged that it was unconstitutional and decided to stop defending it in court.

The panel’s key finding was that there was no “demonstrated connection” between the law’s hurtful treatment of same-sex couples and “its asserted goal of strengthening the bonds and benefits” of heterosexual marriage. It also said another rationale for the law — that it preserves scarce federal resources — was simply not true.

———————-Even so, the panel took unusual care in reaching a conclusion grounded in current equal-prot

Angelina Spencer, the executive director of the Association of Club Executives, which serves as a trade association for strip clubs, said an informal survey of convention business in New York and Denver had determined that Republicans dropped more money at clubs, by far.

“Hands down, it was Republicans,” she said. “The average was $150 for Republicans and $50 for Democrats.”

As further evidence of the clubs’ nonpartisan appeal, Don Kleinhans, the owner of the 2001 Odyssey, said when the Promise Keepers, a male evangelical group, came to town years ago, business was rollicking.

“We had phenomenal numbers all weekend, and they walked in wearing badges and name tags and weren’t shy at all,” he said.

James Davis, a spokesman for the Republican National Convention, declined to discuss Tampa’s prominent strip clubs.

Oh and I have known some gay people but I have none I associate with on a regular basis that I would call a friend. Your comment comes from watching too much Hollywood. Hollywood is currently on the push LGBT bandwagon by putting gay characters on just about every show on TV so you think they are everywhere. The numbers say differently.

Saying that opposing gay marriage is discrimination worthy of government intervention belittles those who faced real discrimination. Is Chick-Fil-A denying service? Do they have straight-only dining rooms, bathrooms, or drinking fountains?

6th trump=Satan 7th trump=Jesus, the Christ….don’t get fooled…We won’t meet Christ in physical body. “there he is, there’s Jesus!!” is a lie, from helldog himself. Antichrist comes first, deceives the WHOLE world. Don’t be part of that. Just have no fear of death, and Satan has no leverage on you. You could very well die, because of your faith, or you could be fooled into believing antichrist is Jesus. There are very, very few options….

I think it would be hysterical if Chick-Fil-A pulled what Walmart did in one town. When the idiot city council voted to prevent Walmart from opening a location (with the hundreds of jobs that it would provide and MILLIONS in tax revenues) in their city, Walmart opened a store across the street from the city limits so that the adjacent town got the tax revenues. So for their “principles” of not wanting a Walmart in their town, they lost out on MILLIONS of dollars in tax revenues annually.

Correct me if I‘m wrong but isn’t the Mayor doing the exact same thing that he is accusing Chick-Fil-A of doing?

I’m sure like every other privately owned business, the Mayor understands that he can not dictate to them what their personal beliefs are, right?

the mayor is either ignorant or is catering to the majority, which means that Boston is a gay community.

Solution…Move out of the cesspool called Boston. Let’s see what the tax base looks like after they turn the place into liberal mecca…Oh wait, it almost is there now!

Chick-Fil-A does NOT discriminate against homosexuals. It just does not support the homosexual agenda.

Mr Mayor, why not let the people of Boston decide w/their wallets if Chick-Fil-A belongs in Boston? Or are you too chicken to trust them?

Good One, Elena. The mayor is acting-out over their personal beliefs, instead of their ‘stated company policies’ !

Excellent post Elena2010! Chick-Fil-A has the best food anyway of any fast-food restaurant. Best service, and glad they are not bowing down to be “politically correct”.
