‘Disheartening and Saddening’: Woman Behind Military Breast-Feeding Photos Reportedly Fired

View the group’s controversial breastfeeding photos here.

Crystal Scott, one of the driving forces behind the controversial photos of women in uniform breast-feeding their children, has been fired from her job as an X-Ray technician, according to reports, and the women in the photos have been reprimanded.

Having served in the military herself, Scott now lives on the Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane with her husband, who is on active duty.  She is also the spokesperson for Mom2Mom, a support group for breast-feeding on the military base, and she claims that her employers blamed bad media coverage when letting her go.

However, she suspects the decision may really be rooted in a complaint she lodged several weeks ago about gender discrimination.

“I was doing something for the good of people. I feel like our organization is making positive changes for women all over the world. To be punished for something that was good was unfortunate,” she said to Right This Minute in an interview.

The women in uniform, on the other hand, have reportedly been reprimanded for violating a rule stating that military uniforms cannot be used to promote a product or cause.

Though the photos were meant to be released for National Breast-feeding Awareness Week, the Mom2Mom group reiterates that they were never intended to “exploit, promote or to use the military uniform to help [their] group” in any way.

Scott explained: “We love our military.  We don’t want to go against them at all.”  She only hopes, she added, “that it brings positive changes not only for military but for women across the board to show them they don’t have to hide in the closet.”

Regardless, the images have caused a firestorm of controversy, and have been featured on almost every major news network.

Some supporters maintain that breastfeeding is a “universal right” and the women are incredibly strong to be serving their country as new mothers, while at least one commenter on Facebook compared the photos to “defecating in uniform.”

Mrs. Scott explained to the Daily Mail: “No one can agree on everything and everyone is 100 per cent entitled to their opinion.  But to compare breastfeeding to other bodily functions like defecating and urinating?  It’s disheartening and saddening.”

According to law, a woman may breastfeed her child in any federal building or on any federal property, but the criticism is more from people who deem it “unprofessional,” rather than illegal.

Amid a flood of Facebook comments, one wrote: “I can’t believe someone would have the audacity to judge or criticize this photo, or any nursing mother. It’s pitiful.”

However, another concluded: “I [was] one of many women who fought long and hard to be accepted and respected as fellow soldiers and the right to wear these uniforms [and] feel shocked [and] angry at these published photos.”

This is no different than advocating a politician while in uniform; they “should” have known this.

Can you point to the exact law/policy that says you give up your constitutional freedoms when you sign the dotted line please.

I’m not saying breast feeding in uniform is or is not protected under the constitution, I just hear a lot of people say that very phrase out of ignorance to the actual facts. No where does the contract say you agree to give up your constitutional rights that I have ever read, signed or seen. Look up SGT. Gary Stein and what happened to him.

Typical spoon-fed military member…(you can’t be belt-fed unless you are part of a branch besides the chair force)…political statements and personal choices are two different things. You and those like you are the type of people who continue the cycle of stupidity in our military today. Military members aren’t robots, don’t treat them that way. (I’m active duty, so I can talk)

While I agree I do not ever want to see women violating the uniform regs for breast feeding which is very insulting to most women like myself who are currently serving, The Marine Corps did not punish a male Marine who appeared in gay porn flicks while wearing his uniform. It is disinformation and you are doing a disservice to the men and women who willfully and knowingly take the oath to defend and protect the Constitution. The problem is there are too many effing whiners out there!!! Even on this website!!!! Who flipping cares? If they want to take pics of there who ha’s and plaster them all over the internet knock yourself out! In uniform, on a boat, under a tree, in a car, flying a kite who cares! I have the choice not to look at it! Now in public, that’s different. My wife breast fed both of our boys. First one never in public. Went to the car, to the bathroom, ect. With the second, she said never again would she feed her child sitting on a dirty toilet next to someone taking a dump or in a hot car! They make a real nice blanket with a hole in the top to go over your head like an oversize apron with pockets. Worked great! She could feed them discreetly in public. What is sad is that even being covered she still got dirty looks and smirks. Ridiculous. We as society are so worried obout our feelings and others feelings its pathetic! You can’t do anything without offending someone or some group and having it make it to the news! Grow up get some thicker skin and quit whining America!

There’s a huge difference between that and what those photos are. These women aren’t being discrete at all. They’re not doing this to show how “natural” it is either. They’re clearly trying to get attention.

Just take a look at the photos. Only one woman is pictured where all you can see is her shirt and the baby. The rest clearly wanted to have the world see their breasts.

Show some modesty for God’s sake. Your child and your husband should be the only ones seeing this.

Do you REALLY believe the ignorant comment you made? Perhaps you need to consider the very real issues that this poor choice caused. It sets our military up to look like a total joke in terms of national defense. It places individual female soldiers at risk when on active duty both from their own co-soldiers as well as enemies. Rules are rules for a reason!

Breastfeeding is a special bonding experience with benefits for both mother and baby. All women should have the ability to breastfeed if they chose to do so. However; the issue here is that a rule was broken that doesn’t just impact the mother and child, but all Americans. On a personal note; the idea that anyone would want to whip out a ta-ta in public just to “exercise their right” to breastfeed with no concern for strangers leering at them is disgusting.

I agree with Jennifer. I’m tired of people playing the “it’s natural” card as justification for being gross. I am no more interested in seeing a woman breastfeed as I am seeing a male stripper. You say it’s natural? So is urinating. That doesn’t mean I want to sit back and watch you! Besides girls are being taught today that being a woman means looking and acting like they belong on a street corner. It’s time for real women, ladies, to speak up and put a stop to this nonsense. Most Americans have no interest in following Europe. Keep you nudity to yourselves.

It’s not that breastfeeding is in any way “unnatural”…but the fact of the matter is that you are openly exposing your body for others to see. And it’s NOT the same as a bathing suit.

I am in the Navy, and as it stands, women who breastfeed/pump have designated locations in which to do so.

I agree that she be reprimanded for having any kind of pictures taken of her breast-feeding while in UNIFORM.

If a woman is going to breast-feed in public, which I completely understand and respect….at least do so with a little bit of decency and modesty. Cover it up!!

No RESPECTABLE man or woman needs to see your body. If pervs want to see boobs, let them go watch pornography on their computers.

I expect all of those GBLT people who are in the military and who constantly are promoting their damn cause and agenda in the media to be FIRED, Relieved of Duty. All of their damn special events to celebrate their damn sickness, mental illness, demonstrates how truly unfit for duty they are and is another example to their hypocrisy.

Because their will turned away from what was right it changed to an intense longing (lust), and an intense longing yielded to becomes habit, and a habit not resisted become necessity. Thus I came to understand how the flesh lust against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh … we are losing our spirit in this country and now in our military …

I don’t really see the big deal about breastfeeding, it’s a natural function of the female human body and female mammals, that is important to life. Compairing feeding a baby to crapping your pants is just wrong If a woman want’s to show her teets more power to her, bring it on.

This is so stupid I can‘t believe I’m even reading or replying to it. First of all, breast feeding an infant is so ordinary and has been done since the beginning. What‘s people’s problem with it?
Perhaps it’s because mothers these days show no modesty. I remember seeing mothers breast feeding infants all the time when I was a child, but they always had the modesty to cover their boob with a diaper, so it was nothing out of the ordinary. The morals today seem to be toward exhibition and considered by some to be offensive toward others in public. Case closed! I’ve seen enough boobs, it’s nothing new, but not enjoyed by all.

It seems you forgot or just don’t know that there is a very powerful trend among some women towards replacing breast-feeding by bottle-feeding, which is very much supported by producers of “formulas.”
That craziness is spreading like metastasis: many damsels are much more concerned about their **** than babies.
On the other hand, I think army is not the place for women at all. In essence, any army is about KILLING. Women are about giving lives.
What a feminist idiocy to demand permission for women to participate in battlefield military service!

I personally am an advocate for breast feeding. However, I’m tired of the “in-your-face” aspect of it. For example, a woman I know (not very well) just had twins. We’re at a dinner party and afterwards we all go into the livingroom to watch the game on tv. She sits down right next to me on the couch, pulls out her breast, and begins feeding the twins. Seriously, I’m all for breast feeding, but please at least try to be more private! I don’t whip out my private part in front of others whenever I have to go!

I nursed all 3 of my kids…best thing for them and its great for bonding…easier and more economical etc….but the one pic that this woman had posted featured a woman with her shirt open feeding two babies at once and there is absolutely no modesty…its pure exhibitionism IMO…….nursing your baby is a beautiful and natural thing, and if one values it, one should perhaps provide for the bonding between mom and baby in a quiet private way…..at least a little discretion……besides….who the hell nurses two babies at once…I’ve never heard of that….moms of multiples usually try to have some “alone” time with each baby, so each baby feels special…..

something strange about this story…..btw…I’m from this area….not too much commotion….I think the woman with her two breasts hanging out like a porn pic should be kicked out of the guard….if nothing else, a complete lack of judgment…

I’ve known the woman in the pictures with twins since we were kids and I assure you she is not in it for attention. Furthermore, until you‘ve had twins I don’t think you can comment on how easy it should be to be discrete when both are hungry at the same time. She was on a radio program a week or two ago talking about it. Also, the pictures were never meant to be this public, a mistake on the photographers fault.

Before my wife and I were politically aware, she asked the La Leche League for help in breast-feeding our first child. These people were crazy, militant progressives. We finally had to ask them not to call us anymore. My wife did her own research and became very knowledgeable on the subject enough to help other people and warn them about the LL.
It’s unfortunate that this woman chose to wear her uniform while promoting this. The advantages of breast-feeding FAR outweigh formula-feeding, though less convenient.
