‘Divisive’ and ‘Alienating’: University of Minnesota-Duluth Forced to Sever Ties With ‘Un-Fair Campaign’

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) has “indefinitely suspended its membership” in the controversial “Un-fair campaign” pending a change in the group’s “emphasis and creative approach,” the school announced in a press release this week.

Much of the credit belongs to Campus Reform, the first outlet to break the story concerning the university’s partnership with the Un-fair campaign in June. As a result, the campaign saw higher levels of scrutiny and national news outlets picked up the story shortly after.

The Blaze previously reported on the ironically racist anti-racism campaign that put together a public service announcement, posters and billboards, all aimed at raising awareness of “white privilege.”

The university’s decision to sever ties with the organization signifies a dramatic change of heart as officials said just weeks ago the school plans to continue “fully supporting the foundations and principles” of the campaign.

However, the latest statement from UMD now asserts: “The campaign’s recent public service announcement (PSA) and its focus on white privilege are divisive and have alienated some UMD alumni, supporters and others in the broader community.”

The news release also reveals the controversial PSA has been removed from the Unfair Campaign’s website. The video is still up on YouTube and has nearly 236,000 views. It can be seen below:

At UMD Chancellor Lendley C. Black’s request, the controversial public service announcement was pulled from the campaign’s website on June 28 (it had not been aired publicly). Representatives from the 18 partners of the Un-Fair Campaign met on Monday, July 2. While they reaffirmed the group’s fundamental goals to promote racial equality and create a constructive dialogue about eliminating racism, they also recognize the messaging and creative emphasis has been divisive. A subcommittee has been formed to reassess the messaging. The partners will reconvene on July 17 to discuss whether to change the creative direction.

UMD continues to advance its strategic goal of creating a positive and inclusive campus climate for all by advancing equity, diversity and social justice (http://www.d.umn.edu/chancellor/planning/). UMD also remains committed to collaborating with area educational, civic and social service agency colleagues on productive approaches to these challenging issues.

Though the PSA has been scrubbed from the Un-Fair campaign website, all of the posters of white people with writing all over their faces admitting their “white privilege” still remain as does the image of the “It‘s hard to see racism when you’re white” billboard.

There have been no apparent apologies issued by the Un-Fair campaign or any of its sponsors. The University of Minnesota-Duluth did not respond to Campus Reform’s request for comment.

    Blazingaway I have taken my Lillie white ass to a predominately black bar, it was a lot of fun I don’t think I bought a drink all night and I had lots of dances with some pretty cute black girls. Maybe a little boy /girl like you would crap themselves but my tightie whities were still crap free at the end of the night.
    Good times had by all, went back a couple of times after that and everyone treated me like a member of the family. As a matter of fact they had a party for me when the job was over and I had to go home.
    Racial stereotypes are a bad thing blaze you would do better in life if you learned to quit seeing everything in terms of skin color. All whites are not rich, all black folks can’t play basketball, and all Mexicans aren’t lazy. Remember these things and you will get along better in life.

      Here are the facts- No one in upper Miinne SOTA, or anywhere where blacks do not live in large numbers could understand anything! Period!

      Well, let me tell you something….I am a white man, who grew up in Black neighborhoods, and walked with a limp due to hip surgery. I still had bikes stolen, I still got jumped by 2 or more blacks at a time because most are cowards! You can hate me if you want to, but facts are facts!

      Also, it’s not just whiny, NBA, separatists that hate the pledge of allegiance or “Old Glory”, it is most os these people in general, because despite the fact that they have had every advantage over me, since I was born in the 70′s, they still want an excuse for being lazy!

      Cry all you want Minne Sotans, these are facts provided by people that live in close proximity to the group in question! The fact is, instead of feeling like it’s your purpose to take up for people you have never even met, you are acting like mindless drones in order to make yourself feel better about your life!

      it’s time to grow up, and break the chains, before the Mall of America isn‘t the only place you don’t have to worry about your safety!

      Black friends I served with in the Marine Corps, they

      Truth be told race relations were doing very well until Dear Leader took the helm. I consider that War fought and won with good results for everyone but some never got over it nor do they want to. Womens rights were also fought and won and that battle is over but some are still trying to reignite it. When will it ever be so equal that everyone feels good about being who they are? Never, because if one race is built up like Latinos and Blacks in this country then others must be pushed down to do so and its evident in everyday media. Turn on the set, sit back and watch the demonization and dumbing down of White people who were once role models for us all! Truth is very few role models are present in the White American community! The socalled ones that are are sellouts who must continually pander to everyone as if they still have something worthwhile to pander away…like power, prestige, influence etc.

      Thankfully they got their collective acts together up at this Big U. racism is racism when you single out a race and put a dunce hat on it.

      I‘m not sure I’m getting your point.

      The original Un-Fair campaign video was trying to push the stereotype that white people were privileged (”privileged that we don’t get stared at when we walk into a room”).

      How, exactly, does your going to a black bar and being treated well somehow vindicate the divisive stereotype put forth by the Un-Fair campaign? The objection to the campaign is that the stereotype is wrong, so you would seem to be proving the point.

    I gotta be honest, I have met very few racist people of any race. (but I dont live in the south either) But the racist people that I HAVE met tend to either be Asian or African American, NOT WHITE. Asians tend to be more racist because they do not have multiculturalism in their culture and when they come to america and see that 80% of the people in the prisons are black, they fail to realize that that is a cultural and socioeconomic, rather than a racial problem. Therefore, first generation asian americans are occasionally racist.

    African Americans tend to be racist because Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Barack Obama, and others of their ilk are CONSTANTLY trying to foment it. They constantly preach to black people that they are discriminated against, so they start seeing imagined discrimination all over the place, when in reality, its nowhere. I would bet that most black people have never had a negative encounter with a racist white person. Again, its not the African Americans fault so much that they are brainwashed as it is their leaders who are constantly lying to them. Like the whole Trayvon thing…seriously? Zimmerman was HISPANIC. Yet white people get blamed.

    However, as a white person, if I want to find a black person who is willing to be racist against ME, its pretty easy, just go spend the day in a black neighborhood. If you sat there all day and smiled and waved at 100 people, and at least one of them would tell you to, “go back to your side of town whiteboy.

      Wait until they are denied a job because quotas….. Wait until they need that job and they will be told that unfortunately the company needs more “minorities”. I was born in Romania but lived most of my life here in the US. How come I don’t qualify as a minority( (not too many Romanians around) but millions of blacks, millions of Hispanics and millions of Asians are considered “ minorities”. All that I am considered is a working class, tax paying white American………. And I am just fine with itand proud of it.

    I am glad to see this campaign and other activities like it that shine a light on what the leadership at this and other teaching institutions belief system’s are. As my children get closer to college age I am building a list of unacceptable places for my kids to go and for me to spend my money at.

You can’t be black, you can’t change what you are except to have compassion for those less fortunate (the less fortunate are not only black). There are plenty of white folks who are discriminated against–trying being female of any color in a corporate environment. Get over it.

I guess they never considered some blacks were born with privilege, Asians were born of privilege, Muslims were born of privilege. They just see “Whites” as the only race of privilege.       Blacks(sub-Saharan indigenous peoples) haven‘t contributed anything to western civilization outside of the handful of instances totally contained within another society’s construct. Whites(Europeans) on the other hand have either designed, constructed, invented or perfected everything used today in modern society, all in their own purview.

      I did not say blacks haven’t contributed anything. When you put the ratio in proportion, it is miniscule to whites along with many others. The point I was making is all contributions which blacks have made have been in the construct of another civilization and never within their own purview.

    grossly bizarre and mistrustful campaign. I really don’t know where these morons get their information from. Obviously the University programs of social science are dabbling way to much and influencing our youth.
    I fail to read or experience any form of entitlement privileges being directed to White people in general on the scale that these people clearly are selling to the public.
    So the question I’m asking, where are these morons getting this specific information and who is getting right to release all these claims these morons keep spewing out? Does the universities have any credibility permiting them to use their public spaces as mass poster pin up points for lies? Obviously the universities are not screening the groups using the public viewing areas within their grounds.

    FUNNY the change in attitude probably came when the white privileged alumni probably stopped writing checks to these commies. I’d love to see a chart on Alumni contributions base on color or ethnic background we already know Conservatives give way more to charities then the commie libs do.

    As long as hate is taught in universities and school there will be hate. The universities and schools should teach how in the U.S. it was possible to overcome these barriers instead of dwelling in the past. Which other country in the world has done so much for so many and yet the only thing they focus on is hate. Hate that they themselves are creating.

      I really don’t recall it being taught until Obama came along. They may have taught socialistic crap.. but hate no! This President has divided the whole country.. divided races and those with and without money.. Democrats and Republican’s. This President divided father from son and mother from daughter or vice versa.. Never in my almost 60 years do I ever remember not being able to talk to the Democrats in my family! So hate it came with Obama and his term! I don‘t hate my family there’s only two out of the dozens of Republican’s that I know of. Just can’t talk to them about politics or God!
