Here Are 5 Times Dems and the Media Have Taken Romney Out of Context (Despite the DNC’s Claim)

DNC Executive Director Patrick Gaspard on Wednesday discussed with MSNBC’s Chuck Todd the president’s now-infamous “You Didn’t Build That” speech, the Romney campaign’s reaction to it, and Team Obama’s insistence that, like, the president never said that.

Gaspard and Team Obama believe the Romney campaign has been less-than-honest in presenting the president’s speech and have repeatedly accused conservatives of “twisting” what Obama said that night in Roanoke, Virginia.

“Have you ever taken Romney’s words out of context?” Todd asked.

“No, Chuck,” Gaspard responded. “We take Governor Romney at his word and we try to represent those views when we lay out the differences that exist between the President and that candidate.”

Oh, really? You know what, Mr. Gaspard? You’ve just given us a great idea for another “top whatever” list.

Without any further introduction, here are the top 5 moments where the DNC and the liberal media has taken former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney out of context:

Andrea Mitchell’s Wawa Edit:

5 Times Dems Have Taken Romney Out of ContextCommenting on the difference between private and public sector efficiency, Mitt Romney during a campaign stop in Pennsylvania used Wawa convenience store touchscreen computers as an example.

He noted that you can go into any Wawa, click on a screen, get what you want when you want, and be out the door. Now compare that to the public sector where it can sometimes take months to get anything done.

Okay, so how was this misrepresented?

Andrea Mitchell and her staff at MSNBC edited out Romney’s private vs. public sector comparison and focused only on the moments where he talked about Wawa computers. When they were done “touching up” Romney’s speech, it was less about efficiency and more about “Gee whiz! Look at that! A computer screen!”

Here’s how Romney’s speech appeared on MSNBC:

But here is what he actually said:

Of course, after they got caught, MSNBC didn’t offer an apology.

I like being able to fire people

5 Times Dems Have Taken Romney Out of ContextThe DNC and the media went red in the face over these seven words.

“See? He is a corporate raider! He likes firing people!”

Of course, contrary to the media narrative, there was much more substance to what Romney actually said:

“I want individuals to have their own insurance. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means that if you don’t like what they do, you could fire them,” Romney said.

“I like being able to fire people who provide services to me. You know, if someone isn’t giving the good service, I want to say, I’m going to go get someone else to provide this service to [emphasis added],” he added.

Yeah, he wasn’t talking about firing employees. Nice try, though.

Romney ‘Agrees’ That We Depend on Gov’t

5 Times Dems Have Taken Romney Out of ContextAfter the Romney campaign jumped all over the “You Didn’t Build That” speech, Team Obama tried to fight back with an ad accusing Romney of twisting the president’s words. The video even argues that Romney agrees with President Obama’s claim that individual success is totally dependent on government:

However, contrary to what the ad would have you believe, this is what Romney actually said [emphasis added]:

And, of course, he [Obama] describes people who we care very deeply about, who make a difference in our lives: our schoolteachers, firefighters, people who build roads. We need those things. We value schoolteachers, firefighters, people who build roads. You really couldn’t have a business if you didn’t have those things.

But, you know, we pay for those things. Alright? The taxpayers pay for government. It’s not like government just provides those to all of us and we say, “Oh, thank you government for doing those things.” No, in fact, we pay for them and we benefit from them and we appreciate the work that they do and the sacrifices that are done by people who work in government. But they did not build this business.

That’s a little different from simply agreeing with the idea that we wouldn’t have anything without government, wouldn’t you agree?

Romney Totally once said ‘You didn’t build that’

5 Times Dems Have Taken Romney Out of ContextAfter it became apparent President Obama’s “You Didn’t Build That” remark wasn’t going over very well, the media desperately searched for something to turn attention back on Romney.

Enter MSNBC:

“Now, before you start ripping the comparison apart, give MSNBC credit. This is a creative parallel. However, it’s also a fatally flawed one,” writes The Blaze’s Mytheos Holt.

“Romney very clearly gives the Olympians credit for their own attributes in this clip — something Obama actively disparages in the one floating around of him,” Holt adds.

He continues:

Moreover, even if you assume that both Obama and Romney have said peoples’ individual attributes take a back seat to the contributions of others and ignore what the quotes involved actually say about that, compare what the messages being sold here are. According to Obama, people achieve great things because of the government. According to Romney, people achieve great things because of their communities and families. It’s not a stretch to figure out which of those two messages is more likely to appeal to the majority of voters.

Needless to say, MSNBC’s Olympic discovery wasn’t very successful. The fact that Todd and Gaspard are still talking about “You Didn’t Build That” proves this.

I’m not concerned about the very poor

5 Times Dems Have Taken Romney Out of ContextRomney said this during an interview on CNN:

I’m not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I’ll fix it. I’m not concerned about the very rich. They’re doing just fine. I’m concerned about the very heart of America, the 90 to 95 percent of Americans who right now are struggling.

But never let what was actually said get in the way of a good partisan video:

So, is this what Gaspard mean when he said “We take Governor Romney at his word”?

We need to try and start thinking like Americans again because we’re on the threshold of losing America. As for Ron Paul ~ he’s a good American and a patriot for sure but he is not up to speed with where we are today. Hopefully Mitt Romney will oust Obama’s Communist butt and put together a cabinet and administration that is more focused on strengthening our country rather than to destroy it. The Leftists, Progressives, Marxists, Communists or whatever is driving the Obama government leeches and trolls have shown their ugly face. In November your vote will be for a Republic America or a Communist America and if Obama wins ~ I feel sorry for every fool that voted for him because he will forget the election and all of his promises in less than five minutes after he is re-elected. Obama is a narcissist and he is counting on every ignorant voter he can get to support him. I wouldn’t urinate on Obama if he was croaking of thirst.

I don’t believe anything that spews from the lips of any mainstream news media air personality. They are all liberal bird brains. I don’t believe anything that Obama might have to say in any political ad because he is the biggest liar on the planet right now and he is a traitor, a fraud, is anti-American and a Communist. I’m voting for the only American running for president in November and his name is Mitt Romney and nothing Obama could do or say would make me change my vote; mainly because I’d hate to see America fall under the United Nations, lose the Constitution and be taken over by a bunch of One World Order freaks like George Soros, the IMF and the UN. I feel confident that Obama has a golden parachute in his closet and we won’t be seeing the last of him if is is voted out in November. He’ll find a position in the Soros cult or with the Muslim Brotherhood somewhere; you can be sure.

      To the Romney supporters:

Romney is a Keynesian like Obama and Bush (and Santorum, for that matter).

Government interventions are the problem, GOP. You’re not going to solve our problems by electing a right wing interventionist. You’re going to FURTHER drag the perception people have of the free market through the mud by calling Romney “pro free market”, because the economic positions he actually advocates for will fail, and you will allow the Left to deceive people because YOU believe that Romney is for the free market.

I’m voting for Ron Paul, no matter what.

Remember in the beginning years of our country our two parties were Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. We need a real conservative not a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

      @little big man,

“Then you are voting for obama. hey thanks for hating america so much.people like you paul bots are just as bad as obama bot voters.”

No, I’m voting against the statist Left AND the statist Right. Romney and Obama believe the same basic premise about economics, which is that government can help the economy.

      They’re BOTH Keynesians.

The reason we’re in this mess is because Republicans are consistently incapable of recognizing statism in their own party. The GOP has been co-opted by Progressive ideology.

So thanks for doing such a great job, thus far. I think my conscience will allow me to sleep if I vote for the only constitutionalist running, this time.

Your vote for Romney will be a vote for Obama Light, by the way. Good luck trying to defend your choice when Romney’s Keynesianism and interventionist foreign policy seemingly allows the Left to blame the free market for both.

Romney is no friend of limited government, though he says otherwise. His record proves it.

Vote for Ron Paul if you want to try to get your Constitutional Republic back.

When a liberal, think of oh, say Joe Biden or Hussein Obama, opens their mouth and jams their hoof in it clear up to the hip it’s either never covered by the lamestream media, or “they simply misspoke”. But if they can edit, rearrange, fold, spindle, paste, and mutilate something a Republican or conservative says something to make them look bad then they’ll jump all over it to show what a racist, hateful bum that person is. Witness the treatment of Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, and oh, Mitt Romney.

Obama is a socialist and marxist. He messages demonstrated that. He’s indicated it more than once, especially with his “share the wealth” and “you didn’t build that” comments. The problem is, most democrats agree with it. So, what exactly has the democrat party become? The party platform is a far cry from the 50s and early 60s. Way further to the left than it has ever been before. I would hope many democrats would realize this and abandon this party. Otherwise, we will be done as a republic and the United States will be replaced with a marxist government and be called the United Socialist States of America with Obama at the helm.

There are a lot of people in government who help us and allow us to have an economy that works and allow entrepenuers and business leaders of various kinds to start businesses and create jobs. We all recognize that. That’s an important thing.Or if he said this:
I know that you recognize that a lot of people help you in a business. Perhaps the banks, the investors. There’s no question your mom and dad. Your school teachers. The people that provide roads, the fire, and the police. A lot of people help.

We tend to help each other, and this nation provides more charity than most other countries combined. We do want and need a right of center style of government, because frankly we can’t live a safe life without it. But, you have to understand that it is the people, and especially the people who actually pay taxes, and especially those businesses that pay large amounts of taxes. You really should learn how we became a Republic.

OCRAP..it’s fun to play the “Take Mitt out of context” game isn’t it champ?

Look..I know why you’re doing it..you’ve got nothing. No really..the “Bain” thing didn’t work. The “war on women” didn’t work (hint: you dont say a woman who’s raised sons while battling cancer and MS “hasn’t worked a day in her life”). The “show us your taxes” thing hasn’t worked. The “he’s an out of touch rich guy” thing hasn’t worked. So over $100 million in commercials in battle ground states later…Obama’s running at a deficit (nothing for little Barry) with nothing to show for it (again..not new for little Barry). So I don’t blame you sport. You really do have to make it up at this point..you’ve got nothing.

Thing is..you‘ve offered absolutely NOTHING where Mitt Romney says anythiing resembling Obama’s unteleprompted gafferoo. Nothing. That’s ok…just keep hunting Elmer Fudd..you‘ll find your waskewy wabbit I’m sure.

@ocrick obviously english isn’t your first language if you think those two statemnets are the same. How about the you‘re not any smarter or you didn’t work any harder? Smarter sure there are a lot of smart people, but I don‘t know a single succesful small business person who didn’t bust their arse building their business.

To start with, Romney didn’t take Obama out of context. I’ve watched the entire clip several times and he said exactly what he meant. Take the teleprompter away and the Marxist shines right on through.

honestly GONZO..a lot of us will hold our noses and vote for Romney but Obama has to go…period. This country can’t take another four years of the neophyte do-nothing/know-nothing.
Seriously this pair of clownshoes looks you in the face and says his policies have worked? He sees the costs of Obamacare triple after he crowed about it coming in under $900 billion and he doesn’t say a peep about it? He adds what?..2..3 million illegals to the competition for jobs in a country that has a reduced workforce already under Obama and for what? A few cheap votes? Obama is a menace..he has to go.

      @gonzo

      Yes garbage.

      1. Romney’s budget doesnt cut current spending levels. That is a endorsement of Obama’s spending.
      2. Romney is pro gun control.
      3. Romney created Romney/Obamacare and now wants to repeal and “REPLACE”. He doesnt get that government needs to get out of the healthcare business.
      4. Romney has said Bernanke is doing a good job and he will not waste time on the FED.
      5. Romney wants to continue the endless wars and even expand them into Syria and Iran.
      6. Romney has been pro choice his whole life. He even said on Meet the Press he is only pro life now for political reasons.
      7. Romney is pro bailouts.
      8. Romney shares many of the same big banks as donors just like Obama.
      9. Romney will be get the UN out of the United States and the United States out of the UN.
      10. Romney supports freedom stripping bills like the Patriot act and NDAA.
      11. Romney is pro amnesty.

YES HE IS GARBAGE!! You people will not see it until after he loses this election just like you see McCain for who he really is. We dont have time for this. We are bankrupt and we need drastic actions now. Romney doesnt have the backbone for the job.
