DNC Produces ‘Etch-A-Sketch‘ Romney Attack Video Hours After Adviser’s Gaffe

Mitt Romney’s campaign slogan may be “Believe in America,“ but ”Two steps forward, one step back” seems more appropriate considering the momentum the candidate and his advisers consistently manage to throw a wet blanket on every time they see some success.
After winning the Illinois GOP primary Tuesday and securing the key endorsement of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the Romney campaign had everything going for them. Then campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said this on CNN:
JOHN FUGELSANG: Good morning, sir. It’s fair to say that John McCain was considerably a more moderate candidate than the ones that Governor Romney faces now. Is there a concern that the pressure from Santorum and Gingrich might force the governor to attach so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?
FEHRNSTROM: Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch a Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again.
Rick Santorum’s Communications Director Hogan Gidley and Obama Senior Adviser David Axelrod jumped all over the remarks. Democratic operative Matt Ortega immediately launched a Mitt Romney Etch-a-Sketch website highlighting the former Massachusetts governor’s flip-flops, and the DNC has now released video pounding the Republican presidential candidate on his adviser’s gaffe:

This was the primary problem most conservatives had with Romney… he has reset one to many times. So now we are supposed to believe this comment was just in regard to message? (BTW, even if it was just referring to message, we need a leader who will communicate the conservative message and educate the American people.)
Being that this came from someone high up in his campaign, it smells of letting the inside plan out of the bag.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 6:34pmPoor way to say it but he was describing the transition to general election,
Reason why Romney was seen so highly by indies in the beginning is because his message was in the center of the base and the indies. He most likely felt that he would have enough support without moving one way or the other and could stay steady. Come to find out the base wanted him to talk more to them and the message they wanted and so he directed his message on the concerns of the base. Not position, message. So he started talking more on the message that concerned the base more than the indies, the social issues and economy. In the middle he wouldn’t speak on the social issues. Now history of politics is, and Santorum and Gingrich have agreed, that when they get into the general they will focus their message towards the indies and not just the base. (This is the history of politics which is the industry I am in). Much like court.
Indies don’t want to hear about the social issues, they want more about defense and the economy. So the message would be focused on that. I will agree that it sounds iffy unless you listen to the whole interview. Did you know that Glenn Beck’s Will Cain was one of the interviewers and they were talking about the message and the future. The history of the transition between primary and general is, when you transition, indies will listen to the message you have for them and judge you on that. Could they be concerned that he‘ll hit the ’reset’ button once he has the nomination? You know, just like an Etch-A-Sketch…..
The bigger question is why the RNC is pushing Romney down our throats? Could it be that whomever is pulling the strings wants us to choose between Obama and Obama-lite?
If people would actually read and study the Constitution they‘d understand that the duties of government are clearly defined and enumerated and don’t change based on the political philosophy of the office holder.

Media, and those running against him, take everything Romney says and tries to make it look like he’s changing position, because that’s all they got! You take away the flip flop accusation and Santorum/Obama have nothing left to use. As a die hard constitutionalist I want Paul’s vision…as a realist I want Romney to change America. Change requires more than commitment to an idea…it requires a skill set to change people’s view. Making a liberal more moderate. Romney can actually make change happen and that change will be down the conservative path I can guarantee you that.

Well, let’s see… for the same reason the other 3 candidates can’t. Because there’s 4 guys in the race. Divide 100% by 4 and you’re at 25%. Shave a little off for Gingrich and Paul and add those to Rick and Mitt and PRESTO… you’re at around 30% or so.
Geez. This aint’t rocket science, genius!

with 4 people in the race, it is impossible to know who the majority of republicans support – that is what a convention is for. You cant have it both ways. Either we have a convention because nobody gets 50% OR romney can refute that argument by getting near 50% of the vote.
Mccain did the exact same thing romney is doing. Mccain was winning states with only 30% of the vote. That was because the rest of the field had about 4 conservatives spliting 70% of the vote. You saw in 2008 that just because you win a state with 30% of the vote – does not mean you are supported by the republican voters

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 5:31pmSo let me get this straight. Everyone is taking the rhetoric of the media that the spokesman was talking about Romney changing positions? Are you denying that he meant that he was instead talking about changing his message and his target of that message.
If you don’t remember the transition between primary and general election here is a heads up. When you are in the primary you target your base. When you in the general you target the indies. Much like what Santorum and Gingrich have already said they would have to do in the General. When you transition you redirect your message, not position, message. Instead of talking a lot about faith and social issues, you concentrate more on economy and defense. That is how you get the independent vote, same thing Reagan did and Santorum and Gingrich is planning, if they win.
Yes he should have said it a better way but he basically described the transition, and the media and opponents are going haywire with it.

Well, that’s not how it looks to me — and I make my living in logic and communication (I’m a lawyer). Quite frankly, last night, I was O.K. with the result in Illinois. I only gave money to Santorum in the primary, but I was thinking “Well, at least Romney does well in the “swing states”, so the general election might go well. Time for this nomination to be done with.” Then I read about Fehrnstrom’s “Etch-a-Sketch” comment and I am close to freaking out. That is a plain and simple description of where I am on this. Not saying that I am indicative of any big demographic, but it sure seems to me that Romney needs to address this very swiftly, very forcefully and very PUBLICLY.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 5:14pmLame ad…Fehrstrom was not talking about changing positions…he was referencing a change in tone and opposition. You campaign differently in a General Election verses a primary election. In a general election you neutralize the tone to attract a broader group of voters. Independents and moderates are not as receptive to the conservative red meat rhetoric. This has nothing to do with changing positions or platform. Some pundits thought Romney ran the risk of losing the GOP primary because he was running more of a general election campaign than a targeting GOP campaign with lots of incendiary rhetoric.
So now we will have to hear sanctimonious Santorum drone on and on about this gaffe. Knowing Santorum he probably assisted in the creation of this DNC ad.

The way to hold politicians like Romney to their promises is to NOT ELECT THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Allow me to ask you one question. Which was the keystone of RomneyCare: 1) The individual mandate or 2) a free-market, consumer driven, deregulating insurance market for people to buy their own insurance?
NOTE: Gingrich wanted a federal individual mandate, a “variation of ObamaCare” as he put it. Santorum wanted an employer mandate. Paul would be the only one to be safe in this issue, yet again his other stances are sometimes scary. That is why I call for Romney to ask Paul to advise on the Treasury and Fed.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 3:50pmSeriously, is this all they’ve got?
What a lame ad.
Quotes out of context again, who cares?
These hacks like Chruch Lady Santorum, are amateurs.
Romney is an outsider who will indeed shake things up.
Romney should run a similiar ad with his great lines, with the tag, Romney is going to Washington to shake it up.
As for resetting the campaign in the Fall, well Duhhhh….

No true conservative will stay home on election day. You see, a true conservative loves America and recognizes that four more years of Obama will finish this country off. Therefore, true conservatives will get off their butts and vote for whomever is up against the Tyrant. See you on election day!

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 3:48pmThis is a perfect example of why a protracted Republican Primary is a GOOD thing. Every dollar wasted on any GOP contender now is simply a dollar and an attack that cannot be used again effectively in the General. Fire away, DNC!

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 4:32pmObama will have $1 billion to work with, he ain’t short on cash. This primary needs to end and the country needs to rally around Romney to beat the Tyrant. Romney is far from my first choice, but the race is over, I’ve accepted it. Stop living in denial.

You are right, Obama has 1 billion to spend on this campaign. None of it would be worth a cent if he was running against a candidate that was different from him. The problem is you and your buddies are trying to put a self proclaimed progressive, creator of Romneycare, pro NDAA, pro war, pro choice, pro gun control, and pro tax up against him. What can Romney actually attack Obama on and not be a hypocrite?

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 3:59pmSantorum attacks Romney but you know he would have to change his message to talk to the indies who don’t want or like him right now. They think, thanks to the media that all he does is talk about contraception and religion. he would have to focus his message on what is important to Indies, not change position but message. This is what Romney’s campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom was talking about. After the Primary people know that your message would change as long as your positions don’t.
GOOD TRY ANTI-ROMNEY COMMENT MAKERS AND DNC AD MAKERS, YOU GUYS SEEM TO BE WORKING ON THE SAME AGENDA… TAKE OUT ROMNEY IN THE PRIMARY

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 4:05pmSantorum did not think about it because he does NOT know how to manage his campaign $ wisely! He would rather blow money on these toys – which are not cheap!! Posted on March 21, 2012 at 4:07pmLOL, ok lets play.
Can you explain why Romney would put a budget out that only cuts future spending and cuts nothing from current spending levels?
Can you explain why Romney would support the signing of the NDAA?
Can you explain why Romney says he didnt raise taxes in Massachusetts yet created 33 new fees and 57 fees were increased?
Can you explain why in 2007 Romney said we need a national healthcare mandidate?
Can you explain why in a interview with Tim Russert that he is “from a politically perspective life begins at conception”? Well from a moral perspective he follows his mother and her support for abortion when she ran in 1970.
Can you explain what Romney means when talking about gun laws in Massachusetts “I believe the help protect us and provide for our safety”?
Being blinded and voting because the guy is a Mormon(White Horse prophecy) and voting for someone because they are black are just as bad.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 4:17pmNope. I can’t explain a single one of those. I wouldn’t even try. I don’t much care for Romney.
But I will tell you this: he’s better than Obama. And if the Right and the sane Middle continue to tear themselves up over this primary, then we’ll have four-plus more years of the Dictator in Chief.
So I guess my answer to each of those questions is: “He’s not Obama”.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 4:40pm“He’s not Obama.” isn’t good enough.
Why prolong the destruction of America?
It’s a done deal.
We passed the point of no return decades ago.
Four more years of Obama just might destroy America. Or, more accurately, let her die a natural death rather than keep her on life support for another few decades while our children continue to suffer pointlessly.
It’s been over. Let go. Move on.
Only then can we do something that matters; creating a new nation where people who believe in Freedom can live away from the 2/3 of these gutless, ignorant fools who populate this nation today.
We can’t change them; we must leave them behind and start again.
The longer we wait the stronger they grow and the more we fight for nothing.

How are they lies in his own words? I have the videos from youtube. I watched Romney say he would support the NDAA during a debate. I watched the debate in 2007 were he said he would talk to his lawyers about attacking Iran. I dont need Santorum( who is a fake) or the DNC to show me these things. Going to Mitt spin sites is a waste of time. I will take him at his word, in his own words.

Posted on March 21, 2012 at 6:47pm“He’s not Obama” isn’t enough to win the election. Look at 2004. Kerry ran on “Anyone but bush”. People don’t like to unsit a current president unless there is a major reason too, and a rescued economy from the brink of depression isn’t a reason to oust him, it’s a reason to keep him.
