‘Do as You’re Told’: Here‘s How Australian Tobacco Companies Are Fighting the ’Nanny State’

Recently The Blaze reported on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration releasing nine new and grotesque warning labels for cigarette packs. The labels feature graphic images, including corpses, rotting teeth and gums, and a man with a tracheotomy smoking, along with the phrases “Smoking can kill you” and “Cigarettes cause cancer.”
But while proponents of the anti-smoking campaign see this as a victory in the public health arena, others fear it is a major step towards an all-intrusive Nanny State. It makes one wonder if they will start displaying photos of a cirrhosised liver on liquor bottles, or a list of all diabetes-related ailments on a box of Twinkies.
And people in Australia who are currently faced with the same cigarette packaging and smoking restrictions — and who aren’t pleased with the “over the top” degree of state intervention — seem to feel the same way. To combat the creeping effects of government intrusion, Australia’s tobacco industry has launched a“No Nanny State” ad campaign, featuring a dour-faced Nanny instructing you to “do as you’re told.” She also doesn’t seem to mind collecting her tax-dollars from each sinful pack of cigarettes:

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 5:34pmThe Federal Government cannot add. (timothy Geithner, either) If cigarettes ceased being made today, all of them, and there were no more cigarettes on the planet. What or should I dare say WHO is going to make up for the financial loss? The unemployed due to the loss of the industry…the city’s and states would lose money those people who are now unemployed contributed to the economy, WHO would replace the federal taxes that cigarettes generate for the Federal Government coffers? We Would, on groceries, milk, bread, cheese, alcohol, rent, lights, water , gas, gasoline, you name it, it will sky rocket. The government got used to living with those tax dollars, they are not gonna go quietly into the night without that money.

I suggest this artistic rendering of a famous photo being shown at the opening of every televised Presidential address:

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 4:55pmThe government wants to keep marijuana right where it is because legalizing it would remove tons of profit for them. The facts with marijuana.. No packaging costs, no distribution costs, no excise taxes or regulations, Eager to work staff that works on profit, not salaried. aka, dealers. All of that equals huge profit for the state run marijuana industry.. Second income stream the fees and fines levied on those that get caught. Third, keeps the police busy, The DEA busy, the courts busy, keeps the jails filled thus a good reason to tax even more. If it’s legalized a huge can of worms opens up and the income stream for the government controlled marijuana trade changes drastically. Do you know who controls the heroin trade? Take a huge guess and it’s all a sham.

Report Post »Stupid, stupid, stupid. You wanna make people own their behavior on this? Make the folks who receive incomed-based entitlements or health coverage related to disability claims own their vices with limited coverage… like those of us who must pay our way AND theirs. This just affirms you can have too much governance. Australia is an odd bird… a ruff and tumble history, but in the end defined by being cowed and subjugated. This produces some very nasty and intolerant characters… kinda like the Scotland of the South Pacific.

My mother on the other hand, never tasted liquor in her life, never smoked a cigarette, and she passed at 71, and it was cancer. And it wasn’t from second hand smoke either , since my dad never smoked around her, ever, and went outside to smoke because she didn’t want it in the house. Me, on the other hand , have smoked since I was 9 years old, and I’m now 73, and ,though I have some medical problems, they can’t attribute any of them to tobacco use. So, it depends on the individual, and there surroundings.

Where were you when the Cal. government came after cigarette smokers in public buildings, then Restaurants, then any enclosed space, then public parks etc. etc. etc. Thats how this has been done for generations… The nanny state started in 1887 when the federal government assumed control of a private commercial enterprise, the railroads, and, with the Interstate Commerce act, we got the camels nose under the tent.. Posted on June 25, 2011 at 3:30pmTo fix the problem you first have to understand where the nanny arguments gather their power. The government spends 50 cents of every health care dollar and that is where they see the authority to tell you what you can eat, smoke etc. First you have to give up the govt goodies before you can expect to live how you please. For my conservative friends out there, you have to learn to allow others to be free to do as they wish so that your rights to do as you wish are preserved as well. As long as you are not taking from someone or hurting them you should be able to do as you wish. This means some people will smoke pot, others will visit prostitutes and some others will gamble at casinos. When you start infringing on the freedoms of others you can well expect that they will begin infringing on yours. I am willing to tolerate the activities of others so that I can preserve the things I wish to do. You can cite any bible verse or study you like but if you want the power to be free you have to allow freedom to others, even if you view it as destructive or immoral. Morality is not the domain of government. The govt is there to protect our rights handed down from the Creator.
Give up your govt health and welfare in all its forms and the nanny state disappears. Give up your bans on private activities engaged in by adults and the nanny state disappears. If you insist on instilling your morals on the rest of the nation we will never be rid of an over reaching govt.

Report Post »You make several good points. However it should be noted that the government is in the business of legislating morality. And they should. No murder, no theft, etc…. The question is how much morality should they legislate? Most libertarians, and I would consider myself one as well, would say government involvement begins where one’s actions affect the lives of others. But that does raise an issue. How much of an effect is neccessary to justify government involvement? This is why we need debate on these issues. Because almost all actions affect someone else on some level or another, a debate could be had about justifiable government actions. All this being said, a state should be the government being discussed, not the federal, because then we could see which laws are the most successful. I’m not condemning your post as much as commenting on the principles behind the discussion.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 11:05pmSorry for my terrible grammar, this key board is crap and I can’t type and watch the screen just yet…Spell check doesn’t reveal my stupidity and I I should at least read through my statement before I post, I just get so fired up at these people. AS I know it is this mentality that lead me to addiction in a million different ways. It is Faith that has restored me to sanity and got me sober.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 11:23pmSnowleopard {gallery of cat folks} says, “Exactly, the government is imposing its control tighter and tighter upon us all one piece at a time; just under Mr Obama, it is in the open now and no longer hidden in the shadows. Soon enough I would not be shocked if they made breathing or living a criminal offense.”
Thanks Snowleopard for perfectly illustrating the disconnect between reality and the Tea Party version of reality. Cigarettes kill those who smoke. That is reality. Smoking cigarettes is deadly, one of the most preventable causes of premature death in the United States.
The government is requiring additional, graphic warnings of the consequences of smoking on packs of cigarettes.
That’s a good thing right? No, not according to Snowleapord. A warning on a pack of cigarettes, according to Snow, is “control by the government.”
That’s where you are wrong Snow. A warning of the deadly effects of smoking is not “the government controlling your life.” It’s education. Smoking will kill you. Telling you that isn’t “controlling you,” it’s just warning you.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 11:28pmThat is right all they want is control over us and the companies. Nanny state. Really sick of it. My entire family smokes and the ones that died were 90 and they didn’t have any thing remotely related to smoking. Maybe they will now say old age is caused by smoking? I am really sick and tired of this government telling us what to do. Freedom, yeah right. Every chance they get they find something else that is for our own good. Do as your told. Do they really think this will cause any one to quit smoking? Just go out and get your cigarette cases now. Months ago I bought mine on ebay and sent one to my sister too. Maybe it is time to go back to the cigarette cases where cigarettes were always kept. Who is going to keep the packaging. I guess they didn’t learn from prohibition. Maybe they will never learn. But I took statistics and the entire bad cigarette thing is about as scientific as global warming. Think genetics. Climate change, read history. It is all about money for the government and their new world order.

I freed your mind-cleansed your thoughts, kept you free from those “anti-life delusions” of non-sequitors called, “Individuality” and “Free To Think For Myself.” You suffered under such beliefs! Suffer no more! My gift to you: a plus-good, pro-reality, thought-life system called: SAMENESS. Yes, we are One, we are Same. Why? Because your Differences caused your sufferings, but in SAMENESS we all have Peace and suffer no more.
Our Motto is: DIFFERENCE CAUSES PAIN-SAMENESS CAUSES PEACE. Let us blessed as
ONE IN-SAME!
Oh my children! I am Father and Mother to each of you! I Love You! I Want What Is Best For You! Every day I pray for you to receive the wisdom of the “I’M-MORALS” that you might attain such lofty status. Be an IM-MORAL as it will lead you into CONFORMITY; for this, also, is the great good in life. SAMENESS and CONFORMITY!
One last thing: I work hard for YOU, and invest MY MONEY to keep you healthy! Smoking is being DIFFERENT, and DIFFERENCE CAUSES PAIN! See the pictures on cigarrette packs? They reveal the TRUTH of the suffering of DIFFERENCE!

If the government REALLY cared about people being harmed by cigarettes, then cigarettes would be illegal. But as long as the tax money keeps rolling in…….

Cronyism. Several (not all) large companies in America have some kind of relationship with the guys in Washington. They don’t want to jeapardize their sweet deals, so they keep their mouths shut.
Progressive CEOs are AT LEAST as dangerous as Progressive politicians. In fact, they might be more dangerous.

If that’s how you feel about graphic warning pictures on cigarettes, that they’re educational, then how would you feel about requiring that photos of aborted babies be hung in every abortion clinic? Would that still be merely educational, or would it be interfering with a woman’s right to choose?

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 1:28pmYou are so correct in your post, and this is just a drop in the ocean of all ‘OUR GOVT> has planned for us. They‘re not content to see that we’ve already lost 2 generations to drugs. They want to finish dumbing down the rest of society, so they can finish destroying this country, and not have to worry about anyone trying to stop them. Its past time folks. We’ve got to rise up and stop this now.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 2:57pmMaryJane is still better for you than cigs [has been PROVEN to not only slow cancerous cell growth, but completely HALT it (I like to imagine that the cancer gets too high and sits around like a loafer all day instead of doing its job: killing you :P)]. Sure, there’s more tar when you combust it, but, IF YOU USE A VAPORIZER, there’s literally no tar being inhaled. There are also e-cigs that are basically water/nicotine vaporizers! Just sayin – there are BETTER ways of catching a nicotine buzz than smoking a paper tube filled with tobacco and additives! ADDICTS, GET WITH THE TIMES! THE FUTURE IS HERE!
