Do Conservatives Have Stronger ‘Yuck’ Reaction Than Liberals?

Perhaps some stories on The Blaze have made you wrinkle your nose in a distinctive “gross me out” reaction. If not, check out the edible insect food cart or the graphic images of Gadhafi being pulled from a drainpipe. Or take a look at the picture below.

Study: Conservatives More Likely to React Adversely to Unpleasant, Gross Images

This was one of the photos University of Nebraska researchers showed study participants to gauge their reactions.

How did you do?

Chances are, if you had a “that’s gross” reaction to any of the above articles or the image, you may lean a little more to the right on the political spectrum.

Researchers at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, showed people a series of unpleasant images. What they found is that those with a stronger gut reaction — literally — to photos of people eating worms or an open, bloody wound, were more likely to identify themselves as conservative. Scientists measured participants reactions to the photos through electrodes placed on their skin.

According to the press release, these findings play in to a growing area of research:

“The proper interpretation of the findings (in the current study) is not that biology causes politics or that politics causes biology,” the authors write, “but that certain political orientations at some unspecified point become housed in our biology, with meaningful political consequences.”

Acceptance of the role of involuntary physiological responses is not easy for many, however: “Most are proud of their political orientations, believe them to be rational responses to the world around them, and are reluctant to concede that subconscious predispositions play any role in shaping them,” they write.

The researchers believe that if the connection between politics and involuntary physiological responses become more widely researched and well-known that it could help reduce “frustration from the perceived illogical inflexibility of political opponents and reduce political hostility.”

This study was published in PLosOne.

    Total BS. I’ve practiced survival. I’ve eaten magots and they are not only high in protein but the taste good too. Ants make great seasoning (salt) and you can catch live minnows using your shirt as a sein (sp? net) and swallow them head first to make a great meal. Raw beef is tasty too when you haven’t eaten for a couple days and your too hungry to cook it.

    Now if I prepared some spadderdock (cattail root) for a liberal, I guarantee they would gag like any conservative.

      The right wing are the same people demanding that photos of the murdered osama be made public.They’re just annoyed that the arabs pulled the rug out from under them by killing gadagfi themselves and rejoiceing about it. The right glorifies violence when done by their idols[the military]so this is a bogus claim. Disgust [at certain foods] is cultural.There are smells from “ethnic” foods that make me want to vomit-but other people relish. That’s cultural. But even there individuals can innately like or be revolted by foods their family eats.

      It‘s not that people think maggots don’t taste good that makes people have aversion to them-it’s the way they look and the knowledge of what they are.Where rot is-maggots are and though maggots are not rot -that association is encoded in our visceral revulsion.nature’s way of protecting us from eating harmful foods[though maggots themselves may be nutricious].I used to love tomatoes . Then one day a saw a rotting tomato with maggots in it on my windowsill-i havn’t eaten a tomato since.[not quite true-in a salad chopped up from a testaurant I will eat it].Living things [organic life] is also disgusting-where there is life there is death[rot,putriffication]. So it is a delicate balance-eating food.

    Could be might not be, but it brings up my point. Liberals and Conservatives self destruct without each other. To much Liberalism is bad. Too much Conservatism is bad. When the two come together and compromise we move forward as humans. Think about it. Everyday in your personal and your business life Liberals and Conservatives work together building America. Please site examples of how too much conservatism is “bad” Moderate, middle of the roaders accomplish nothing, achieve nothing. Name one moderate who has achieved greatness.       Who’s middle? Where can you find middle ground between a dyed in the wool communist revolutionary and A small businessman just trying to feed his family? A person who refuses to do anything productive yet screams for free stuff and a person who works his butt of day in and day out to be succesful?

      There is no middle ground between these two. Conservatism, which is Classical Liberalism, is the only way to go. Small government, rugged individualism, and free choice is the only thing that will lead to true prosperity for all who choose it.

    I wonder where Libertarians fall in this study. The problem with almost all political type science (as in this article) is that they buy the left/right paradigm wholesale. The entire premise of many studies has to be recalculated for libertarians from what I’ve discovered so far, since we share so few “common” traits with left/right psychologically.

    The gross factor? Dunno. Some things gross me out, some things don’t.

      we are all desensitized to what we consider gross in life anyways. after dealing with horses all my life I have taken my gross level and desensitized it. same with hunting and cleaning animals and general first aid. I say this study stinks and it depends on the person.

    Conservatives have common sense, and values.
    Liberals take more risks, even if they know something to be wrong.
    Conservatives have better survival skills, because we not only learn from our own mistakes, we learn from the mistakes of others.
    Liberals want special treatment, and think the outcome of their actions should always benefit themselves, even if their actions are wrong.
    It is not that conservatives are too inflexible, rather that many liberals are not grounded in their thinking, their actions and thoughts follow their whims.

      Conservatives are rigid-they believe their values are rational and just. Till it becomes socially,politically unacceptable [when the liberals change the culture] Then they acceept and embrace it and find another Conservative value that they rally round as rational and just [till that gets overthrown by the liberal culture and again they jump on the bandwagon.[Their fear of not being "respectable" trumps all.]This is how progress takes place.       We have to take the offensive with regards to the discussion, do we not?
      I would agree that we need to make it a simple question of Americanism (Constitutionalism/Individual freedom), vs Communism (Collectivism/equal results).
      I usually ask a ‘Liberal’ …”so, why do you think our system should be changed?”..or “what type of system, exactly, should we have?”
      Interestingly, they never can articulate, exactly, what it is they want ther utopian system to be. Oh, of course, they hate the rich because they have too much, but never can they make the connection that for everyone to have the same (money/home/status), the motivation for living will be greatly reduced, and life would be pretty hum-drum and boring.

      Democratic Socialists/Communists and their agents in education have done a remarkable job of poisoning the minds of our youth. They have not been taught history in unrevised form. Therefore, those same youth have absolutely no perspective on why our country became the most economically prosperous and militarily powerful and, therefore, freed all the oppressed people we did.
      The youth have no ability to think through all this , and this is why we see and hear the nonsensical answers at the OWS protests.
      So….back to the point. Why not a light-hearted topic here at ‘the Blaze’?

Yet I am a vegetarian…I don’t like seeing animals killed and I thought the rebels who killed Khadafi were animals. I didn’t enjoy his death, nor his daughter’s pain in the least. And in case you have’t been keeping up…Obama has been having our military help the Muslim Brotherhood take down our alliances in the middle east so that Sharia Law could be establlished among other things. What they have done will not benefit us.. nor will it benefit the middlle east. Have you by chance checked out the George Soros funded revolutions such as the Rose Revolution in Georgia? Those useful idiots overthrew their dictator only to hand their government to good ole George and the NTO and now the government has seized their lands and refuse to let them farm or ranch. They have lost what human rights that they had. So not everyone who is a Conservative is cruel and heartless and not every Conservative has their eyes closed

    Not sure I buy this science. I need to see it replicated with a larger study group.

    I believe that Conservatives, who tend to be more of the rugged individualist, outdoorsy, get out and do stuff variety, will see more of the real world, which includes many gross things, than will Liberals, who tend to be more of the crowd following, urbanite, wait for government to do things for them variety. How many times have the meat eaters among us discussed hunting culture around the squeamish Left? I’m reminded of the scene from “Red Dawn” where good-ol-boy Matt assures everybody, “We still got plenty of meat left.” Mayor’s pampered prince, Danny responds derisively, “Just stuff you shot.” Matt inquires, “So tell me, dork, where do you suppose hamburgers come from?” Danny answers cluelessly, “Nobody shoots them.”

    Makes me wonder if showing Danny a captive bolt stunner in action wouldn’t loosen his bowels.

    Too many Liberals, at least the ones not of the vegan/vegetarian bent, who when asked “Where does meat come from?” would only have enough experience to say, “The grocery store.” Meanwhile, lots of Conservatives would answer that question, “From my freezer. Took a 12 point buck last season and field dressed it myself.”

    Liberals look at the blooded Khaddafi and ask, “Where is the UN? Where are the authorities? Someone should step in and restore order.” Conservatives ask, “Where is my .45? I’ll restore order right through his brain pan.”

    The make up of a Conservative is One who sees and faces the truth, no matter how harsh or frightening.

    Libs live their lives denying the reality of what they can not face. When they are confronted with worms they scream. When they are confronted with an unpleasant truth, they go into denial. They spin reality into something they can find acceptable. It is the result of living a life without God. They have no faith or trust in a high power, therefore they feel they are in this world alone. I can only imagine how frightening that must be. Fear is the greatest weapon of evil. They don’t possess the biological make-up for a yuck factor. That’s because they ARE in fact the Golem, who are the biological ancestors to the genetic engineering of early Mesopotamia between the daughters of men, and the fallen angels.       Regarding Boehner. I have to confess that I voted for the guy, and have lived to regret it every day now. He went from a man of principle and character to a puppet of the elite. A spineless drone like George Bush, and Barack Obama. That’s why I call them Golem in an above post.

      We say that we have to settle for what seems best, but history shows that we can settle for nothing but what’s right, or we get what we deserve because of compromise. The Golem.       Okay…providing that you come back to this thread…you lost me on this one. I thought that all of those had been wiped out and that was the purpose of Noah’s flood.. I have always thought that liberal were aliens so to speak..but kin to the fallen angels…sorry 10th…but I find it hard to beleive that they have any angel ancestory. For God made men a little lower than the angels…that would put us below them and I am just quite sure that God took out the halfers in the flood and he locked up the rebel angels in Tartarus. That is supposedly where Jesus went during the 3 days before His resurrection. I was told that He visited the angels telling them that they would never leave Tartarus.

    Yes, there are people who pass gas in public and laugh (liberals) and there are those who are offended by such behavior (conservatives) because it really comes down to a sense of aesthetics about humanity. Conservatives see self restraint and discipline as attractive and liberals see animal behavior/ instincts as attractive. Yes, I can see how it is not easily manipulated by sheer will.

      Bonnie, I consider myself  a hard edged Constitutional conservative.  I also expect my conservative acquaintances to be intellectually honest. 

      I would greatly appreciate that you don’t include me or the bulk of conservatives in your over simplified and somewhat romanticized version of what a real conservative is all about. 

      After reading your post, I can think of nothing more funny than farting on a liberal at this moment.

    So your saying the guy eating worms is a lib? Yep i thought so,disgusting behavior don’t bother them anything goes .But more conservatives are likely to join the military, be first responders, have good family values and respectful children which would you rather be .

      Nothing gross about eating worms. They are actually quite clean and are very nutritious. And hey, if “stuff” really ends up hitting the fan they might become quite a bit more popular as a food source. In that case it would be a good survival mechanism to be able to swallow them without wretching.

    Conservatives have core values about what is wholesome, proper, and good. That’s why they wince at grossness. Liberals are at home with obscene things, and actually put them on a pedestal, like ‘pride parades’ and such.
