Do You Know Michele Bachmann? A Quick History of Her Political Life

Editor’s note: the following is a political profile of Michele Bachmann done by the Associated Press.

Do You Know Michele Bachmann? A Quick History of Her Political LifeST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — One hand clutches a crisply folded U.S. flag with a concealed weapons certification protruding; the other slides discreetly into a denim coat pocket. Behind the beaming state lawmaker, a silhouette target with bullet holes square in the chest. Next to her nameplate, a “No New Taxes!” sticker.

The photo taken during Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann’s initial run for Congress in 2006 captures her essence.

In Bachmann’s quick rise from state lawmaker to unofficial tea party ambassador in Washington, her brazen style has kept Republican leaders on edge and appealed to those in the GOP searching for a fresh, unfettered voice. She relishes the spotlight and seldom cedes ground.

Her unpredictable edge was on display during Monday night’s GOP presidential debate in New Hampshire when, out of the blue, she announced that she had filed papers to be an official candidate for the Republican nomination.

“I do what I say and I say what I mean and I don’t change what I do based on a political wind or desire to necessarily move up the next ladder,“ Bachmann told The Associated Press this spring in an interview in which she stressed her eagerness to ”take on not only the opposing party but my own party as well to do what I think is right.”

Known for piercing and sometimes inaccurate commentary, she regularly aggravates political foes and provides ample fodder to late-night comics. She once falsely claimed taxpayers would be stuck with a $200 million per day tab for Democratic President Barack Obama’s trip to India. She mistakenly identified New Hampshire as the site of the Revolutionary War’s opening shots. (That key American moment occurred in Massachusetts.)

While some see her as a novelty candidate, she’s also regarded as a skilled, resilient politician.

“I know people like to pick at her,” said Dan Nygaard, a local Republican official during Bachmann’s early days in politics. “But you can never underestimate her.”

Do You Know Michele Bachmann? A Quick History of Her Political LifeHer personal evolution is striking.

In college, Bachmann volunteered on Democrat Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign and took her maiden trip to Washington to revel in his inauguration; now she’s a congressional megaphone for the conservative tea party. As a young government lawyer, Bachmann helped chase tax dodgers for the Internal Revenue Service; now she stokes worry about a swarm of IRS agents enforcing the new health insurance law she’s determined to repeal. In 1999, Bachmann failed to win a local school board seat; now she‘s a factor in the race for the nation’s highest office.

Carter’s evangelical Christian beliefs attracted her, she says, while his struggles to rescue the country from a funk turned her away. Bachmann says the tax work gave her a deeper understanding of a tax code she came to regard as flawed.

Bachmann, 55, was born Michele Marie Amble in Waterloo, Iowa. Her father’s engineering job led the family, including Michele and three brothers, to Minnesota when she was in elementary school. By high school, her parents had divorced. She stayed with her mother, who later remarried.

Michele Amble married college boyfriend Marcus Bachmann, a clinical therapist. The youngest of their five children will soon head off to college.

Religion has always factored heavily into Bachmann’s life. She was in the last class to graduate from Oral Roberts University’s now-defunct Coburn School of Law, a school dedicated to educating lawyers with Christian values. (Anita Hill, later involved in the scandal that nearly sank Clarence Thomas’ Supreme Court nomination, taught a couple of Bachmann’s classes.)

Until about two years ago, the Bachmanns were members of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stillwater, Minn., part of a conservative denomination that adheres to strict doctrine and excludes women from church leadership roles. The pastor there, the Rev. Marcus Birkholz, told the AP that the family stopped attending regularly when they moved to another Twin Cities suburb.

“Our church body is very pro-life, and that has come out in Michele’s position all the way along,” Birkholz said. “I would say not everybody would be as outspoken as she is.”

A fellow parishioner encouraged the Bachmanns to consider providing foster care. Teenage girls from troubled families — 23 in all — cycled through the Bachmann house, some as briefly as a couple of weeks and others as long as a couple of years.

Former neighbor Joanne Hood recalls Bachmann taking the lead in organizing block picnics, Christmas cookie exchanges and kiddie bike parades. Today, it pains Hood to see Bachmann mocked over verbal gaffes or demonized over her stances.

“When I hear negative things about her, I think, ‘You don’t know her,’” Hood said. Critics “make her out to be a ditz, and she’s not.”

Bachmann needed a couple of tries to make her mark in politics. After the school board loss, she toppled an incumbent Republican on her way to a state Senate win in 2000. She won an open seat in Congress six years later.

Outspoken on fiscal matters, she vaulted to congressional prominence as the tea party did. She co-founded the House Tea Party Caucus.

Some close to Bachmann privately refer to her as a “light switch.” She flips on the charm to dazzle audiences or nail TV interviews, they say, then takes on a drill sergeant persona in private, where questioning her decisions draws suspicion of disloyalty. She’s described as meticulous and worried about the finer details, such as soundtracks played to pump up rally crowds.

Bachmann has experienced frequent top-level staff changes in her congressional office since 2007. She’s had six chiefs of staff in four years, five press secretaries, five legislative directors and three communications directors.

Bachmann discounts the staff churning as “growing pains” in an office that “moves at a fast rate of speed,” and she stresses that many left for more influential jobs elsewhere.

A few prominent ex-staff members publicly support a fellow GOP presidential candidate, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. Sean Nienow, who ran Bachmann’s district office for a year before a split he called mutual, is among those reserving judgment.

“There‘s no question she’s very conservative ideologically,” said Nienow, now a state senator who mirrors Bachmann from a philosophical standpoint. “Can she win? If she were elected, how would she lead? These are questions that have yet to be answered.”

I love this woman! I have heard her speak in person on several occasions and the liberals SHOULD fear her and they do. Another way to tell is by the media reaction to her. It’s “PALINISH.” Nancy Pelosi spearheaded a vicious campaign against her during the 2010 elections and she handled it like a real pro. If she can stand up to scrutiny from Pelousi, she’s good! If she is teamed up with the right VP, this could be a real winning team!

All of last night’s debaters, except one, just came out with more of their already somewhat stale offerings (Romney, Pawlenty, Santorum) or did not quite live up to expectations either in substance or delivery (Gingrich, Paul, Cain).

Bachmann was the exception. She stood out. Still, I can’t help wondering whether some of her 23 foster children might have been better served by actual adoption by a committed and responsible homosexual couple (whether male or female) at an earlier age. Love and dedication matter more than sexual orientation IMHO.

Pawlenty if he develops a pair, Cain if he refines his message before speaking, Paul simply because he loves the Constitution as I do, Romney ??? Christie absolutely.

If it came down to Obama and her then yes I’ll back here absolutely. Still I believe her to be a distraction from the candidates that could really do us good like Cain. Bachmann would be a good cabinet member but not POTUS. If any female would qualify for POTUS it would be Palin and she may not be ready yet. I really don’t see an outstanding qualified person out there yet but I do believe Palin would be a good vice persident above all that is on the board. Mitt is a good speaker but he does have some funny ideas and funny ideas are not what we need right now. What we need are jobs for the people and if that means another WPA then that would be better than having America sitting around doing nothing. Haven’t heard that from anyone yet.

As governor, Palin demonstrated many of the qualities we expect in our best leaders. She set aside private concerns for the greater good.
She succeeded to a remarkable extent in settling, at least for a time, what had seemed insoluble problems, in the process putting Alaska on a trajectory to financial well-being.

While other states reel under staggering deficits, budget cuts, and protests, Alaska has built up a $12 billion surplus, most of it attributable to Palin’s tax. Galvin estimates that it has raised $8 billion more than Murkowski’s tax would have. But given the corruption that plagued the PPT, a better benchmark might be the tax it supplanted—the one put on the books after the Exxon Valdez spill. By that measure, Palin’s major achievement has probably meant the difference between a $12 billion surplus and a deficit…

On the big issues she left the state in better shape than most people, herself included, seem to realize or want to credit her for.

Palin’s achievement was to pull Alaska out of a dire, corrupt, enduring systemic crisis and return it to fiscal health and prosperity when many people believed that such a thing was impossible

Ron Paul got the most applause even though he was trying hard to cram in as much information within the time allotment and with these types of events that are very controlled, Ron has to be more concise and to the point. Regardless of delivery, he still has my vote nomination or not I’ll write him in this time. Paul – Palin Ticket? Probably not because the Tea party movement is not a religious right movement! We don’t need the government OR the Religious Right telling us how to behave. We can govern ourselves! Bachmann is a phony behind the scenes and if she has internal troubles with her staff then she’s done. She’s NOT the Tea party candidate. Ron Paul if there ever was a Tea Party candidate, is the one because he basically started “the movement” with “Campaign for Liberty” right after the 2008 Election. The others followed suit.

As a long time TP member I am not new to Michelle. Last night she did very well as I knew she would. She is very well suited for debates because she has real values and principles. She knows who she is and firmly believes the American people share her values and principles. I don’t agree with everything she says mainly because I am more of a Liberaterian than she is but I support her campaign. We must not let the press divide us with their gay agenda. We got an early heads up on that last night. 2 gay questions when we are in financial meltdown and bombing 5 countries. The press plans on using their gay agenda to attack the GOP on TV early and often. Same with abortion. We have bigger fish to fry at this point in history. If we don’t defeat Obama,Reid and Pelosi in 2012 the damage they will do in a lame duck second term is too frightening to think about.

AGREED! I was hoping that the candidates would concentrate on O’s administration and not their differences. It was refreshing to see that they could “agree to disagree” on some issues without being degrading. It is most important now as we continue to learn about each candidate and they begin to become known more to those who pay little attention. I have been happy with our field even though so many say it’s not a good one…rubbish! It’s GREAT and will only get greater when Perry and Huntsman enter the debates. The more, the merrier (for now). More impressed with Pawlenty than I thought I’d be…and I thought Ron Paul represented VERY WELL. There’s lots of work to do, wish we could have ALL of them as one! There is no doubt in my mind that O WILL BE one term president. Good Lord Willing!!!!

I like Bachmann personally but she has some serious shortcomings as a presidential candidate. The most obvious is that she voted for the Patriot Act. You can’t call yourself a Constitutional Conservative and then vote for something that so blatantly violates the Constitution.
Every presidential election seems to be touted as “the most important election of our lifetimes”, but I really believe this time it’s true. We can‘t afford even four more years of the direction we’re headed. The Republican candidates seem to offer solutions that may slow the travel but keep the direction. Only one candidate will turn things completely around and head in the other direction, and that’s Ron Paul.

I really couldn’t care less what the mainstream media does. That’s the point. No serious voter who votes on principle should care what the media says. There is only one true conservative candidate and that is Ron Paul. If people want to play the cult of personality games that the media plays, we will get status quo candidates. I wish you could see that that is what they want. When you hold each of these candidates up to the standards of the Constitution only Ron Paul is worthy of the Presidency.

To the writer of this article, Patrick Condon.
Please learn the difference between “overestimate” and “underestimate”. Unless you were intentionally trying to demean Ms. Bachmann, you used the wrong word. This is a common error by ex-jocks. When you say that you can’t underestimate her abilities, you are saying that your estimation of her abilites/worth cannot be low enough. Saying you cannot overestimate her abilities/worth means that no matter how high your estimation is, she is likely to achieve even higher.
Reminds me of the story of a guy from Oklahoma that was sooo stupid that when he moved from Arkansas to Oklahoma, it raised the average IQ of both states…. which is a slam on Oklahoma. Change the states according to who your friends are and where they are from.

Yeah, you’ll lose the moocher vote, but you’ll gain the “Real America” vote.

She lost me completely when she went on her “Hot fer Jesus” rant. It was icky. As a libertarian / independent, that’s the sound bite the left is going to play over and over and over again to make her out to be a kook and with statements like that, she very well may be.

She stood right up to the probing 30-second question opportunities with clear eyes, and said,

“If I am President I will consult with the military and all the Commanders-In-Chief before making a decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan.”

      She looked good, too.

Liberal_Atheist_Critical_Thinker, you‘re calling someone a hillbilly and you can’t even use proper grammar? “What do you know? Your just a hillbilly”. Try it like this, “You’re just a hillbilly”.

Quit calling yourself a critical thinker; it‘s quite obvious you’re not.

Well, for you liberal non-critical-thinkers … I can see how you might find it a novelty for a candidate to be honest, intelligent, moral, God-fearing, accomplished, with a law-degree and 3 terms in Congress. You just don’t see that from your side now do you.

By the way, Mr self-appointed critical thinker, you probably don’t know the meaning of critical thinking (and please don’t quote Webster). I mean “know” what it is to think at all, much less critically. I can say this with authority, because if you did know how to think, you would not be a liberal. Your just another drone that bought the “big lie”.

I often wonder how much Liberal_Atheist_Critical_Thinker gets paid by the democRAT party to come here and make hateful, inflammatory remarks. I’ve been lurking ever since this forum started up and I have yet to see anything worthwhile that he/she adds to any discussion. His/her main objective seems to be to mock and ridicule anyone and everyone at this forum who doesn’t agree with leftist ideology. I also wonder why staff hasn’t already banned this person because of it…..

Please notice the quotations and educate yourself what words inside quotation means. Patrick Condon is not being quoted but is quoting Dan Nygaard.

Some close to Bachmann privately refer to her as a “light switch.” She flips on the charm to dazzle audiences or nail TV interviews, they say, then takes on a drill sergeant persona in private, where questioning her decisions draws suspicion of disloyalty.
      **************
Wonder what they’d call it if she went from “Greek Porticos” to “I need to know who to put my boot on the throat of..!”
At least she says the same thing to every audience instead of waiting to tell CA libs, she’d tax coal fired electric plants out of existence.
