Do You Know the Full Story Behind ‘The Day the Music Died?‘ Here’s Beck’s Version

You’ve probably heard the song a million times. It’s a classic. But do you know the full story behind Don McLean‘s rock ’n roll classic “American Pie” (better known as “the day the music died”)? If you thought it was just about the plane crash that killed Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly, you’re wrong.
On radio Thursday, Glenn Beck revealed the full message behind the catchy tune. What is it? Throughout the song, Beck says, there are warning messages about the deterioration of America.
To refresh your memory, here is the song:
“Our culture has erased the meaning of anybody who tried to issue a warning,” Beck said on radio, citing J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and C.S. Lewis’s “The Chronicles of Narnia.”
“I always thought that this song was about Buddy Holly,” he added. “… But that’s only part of the song. It’s just the surface of the song.”
Listen as Beck goes verse-by-verse and explains the full meaning behind the classic:
In part two, Beck explains that McLean gave interviews saying he was obsessed with the death of America:

And what‘s more how about the possibility that Mclean didn’t really realize just how much of a gem of a song he was really writing. Good job Glenn, you’ve crossed a threshold.

After you watch this and explain this I will address your question.
I have argued with Idiots as well as Liberals.. I asked you to connect killing 11 million people with Newt Gingrich or explain how Glenn has done so. The same as American Pie has nothing to do with Gingrich. But Glenn has chosen this path and split his listeners and now we fight each other.
Address this video, and maybe read the book where Andy says that this book was not to call out any liberals conservatives republicans democrats but rather explain how these people allowed themselves to be killed. Glenn took it to Gingrich in three steps. What the Author was trying to avoid. If you are drinking Romney-Aid or Beck-Brew you will not be able to answer this question of see the problems with Glenn’s show.

I will address your question after you consider and address mine. I expect to not have to say anything else…. keep Trolling…

It just so happens that I listen to both Glenn and Mr. Levin and take a great deal of knowledge from both, really don‘t care for ’your’ judgment on Glenn, let their works speak for themselves, did you forget that #no small matter# planned event that Glenn Beck did back on 9-28-10 Faith, Hope, & Charity gathering? Or the inspiration for the Tea Party movement? If it were not for the Tea Party we would ALL be far worse off, remember the mid-terms? The GOP is trying yet again to prop up their version of a conservative messiah #Newt#, I recollect perfectly that he was ‘shifty’ during the Clinton administration and continues on the same today, you cast dispersions about Glenn Beck and prop up Newt who did far worse WITHOUT remorse, just back-tracking when it was politically expedient. Don’t be so blindly affiliated with just one aspect of truth, you’ll fair far better for clear, concise, formulated opinions.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 4:26pmI’ve know this since the 80s. I didn’t know that Dillon was the Man in the cast…some said it was Elvis in the Army. Coat borrowed from James Dean seals it though as Dillon because he appeared on a album with that coat on. McClean said none of this was true and the song had no meaning whatsoever. If that were true then monkeys could have written such a cryptic piece of work as well. Of course it is saying something of the period. The baby boom gen was a massive gen of youth all coming of age at around the same time. Of course there would be an upheavel of sorts especially when the Lefty’s knew that our country had this baby boom ready and in waiting for the indoctrination. They did a great job on them and what they did is still reverberating until now, just as what the best generation did in WWII. Still echos to this day and we’ve all to thank them for some of the best contributions.

Take a deep breath, count to ten and realize that this is about the future of our country, there will be no more chances if this one is blown. Gin‘grinch’, Romney, two sides of the same coin with a different approach on where to apply the ‘pressure’ points to our country. Santorum is our only chance although I would have voted for Bachmann as well (maybe vice president?). You get too caught up on particular points that in the end mean absolutely nothing. Newt is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, Mitt is not grounded in his beliefs (key word ‘grounded’). So in the end we agree with the real choice, it has nothing to do with Beck and I’ll sum it up for you in one sentence. Glenn Beck ALWAYS says to do your own homework, to not believe him at face value, nothing could be clearer to me. Your very username reveals your personal motivation against Beck.

We must remember though that just because we have learned something does not mean that someone else hasn’t. While it may be repetitious to us…others may need that last tumbler to be turned to open the door to understand the big picture.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 1:44pmThe song’s always been that long, and the meaning has never really been “hidden” if anyone bothered looking it up. Similar to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” it’s a song mostly about life across a few decades. Difference being that Joel’s lyrics come out and say the events, while McLean’s are mostly song references and metaphors.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 8:24amTo ALL of my blaze friends – thank you all again! I am sorry to hear some of you have been out of work for a long time, my heart and prayers go out to you too!
I will land on my feet somehow…I have a good skill set, from a BS degree in computers to carpentry, I can do a lot of things. I am very close to being what Glenn calls E4…so close I can taste it. I will let you all know what I am doing very soon, and maybe you will like my product and buy one. We have one last piece of the puzzle to put together and it will be online. Stay tuned for that my friends.
I also want to thank Glenn and company for their insight and being watchmen, I know I have been a thorn in their side at times – my tongue can be quite sharp. My apologies go out to all I have cut to the bone. We have to come together as Americans, and not let the elite split us apart, we have to find some common ground, or else we will fall like a stone – divided, and that is what they want. After all, Sore-azz says we are the last impediment to a peaceful world right? Where does that putz get off saying that stuff?. If we don’t all get behind the eventual GOP winner, we are toast. Let’s put the petty differences aside and UNITE to defeat the red machine. This much I know! Thanks again everybody, your kind words, your prayers and encouragment have given me the spark, the drive, to ‘dust myself off”. I’ve been down before, but I am not out, and will be back on my feet in no time.

I am sorry to hear you lost your job. For you and every other American who has lost employment, Let’s work together to get Ron Paul nominated and elected. His plan to get America working again begins with the lowest income tax of all the candidates (would like it to be 0%). Here is a link to a WSJ economist who loves Paul’s idea. IF America had the lowest income tax in the world, companies could not get here fast enough to do business….and in turn, put people back to work! Posted on February 9, 2012 at 8:47pmYou’re exactly right, TT. Glenn is completely wasting his time (and ours) with this. The Beatles laughed at the folks doing the same thing with their songs. Both Lennon and McCartney said anyone can read anything into them and some of Lennon’s best lines, he said, were written simply because he had a good “crap” that day. Nothing more. American Pie is a nice tune with a hook. Once when asked what the lyrics meant, Don McLean responded “It means that I will never have to work again.”
BTW, Lori Lieberman wrote the Roberta Flack hit “Killing Me Softly With His Song” after listening to Don McLean sing American Pie at a concert.

Having come of age in the 60′s (even though I never got involved with ‘flower power’ nor did I participate in anything that came afterward, what Glenn said on the radio today feels right. ) I‘ll bet Don McClain might have been reacting to old school buses or VW’s decorated during drug inspired episodes of labor; signs in the windshield stating: @$$, gas, or grass if you wanted a ride! I remember the news accounts about the Hell‘s Angels going crazy as security at a concert but didn’t remember the details and how could you not notice Woodstock? I witnessed but was spared from the 60′s insanity. The draft was over when I reached 18 and my “coming of age” in the 70‘s was a time of the country’s healing. Oh and “Helter Skelter in a summer swelter” refered to Manson and the Tate/LoBianca murders in 69. “Generation lost in space” a reference to the July 69 moon landing and the show Lost in Space on at about the same time.
I also had heard that Satan was Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. Altamont with the Hell’s Angels and “Sympathy for the Devil” makes a bit more sense.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 1:21pmDid a report on in elementary school. Not able to watch the video right now, anyone want to summarize? From what I recall, it’s mostly a procession of musical and 50s-70s event metaphors.
Book of Love, by the Monotones, references to “the king” (Elvis), and the Beatles (quarter practiced in the park/sergeants playing a marching tune), references to the Rolling Stones (moss grows fat on a rolling stone/Jack Flash), the death of Janis Joplin.
Obviously the music reflects a bunch of societal events too; the innocence of the 50s, how it was stripped away, leading to revolutionary changes in the 60s as well as the freedom from responsibility found in Woodstock.
Does that sum up most of it?

Now that many of us have voiced our opinions on him straying from the path, he probably realized that most of his audience, (myself included) get our political commentary from those who do it best. Hannity, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, et. al. Could this be beginning of a deeper immersion into how we changed from the 1950‘s culture to the truly evil parts of the 60’s? Let’s stay tuned in.
