Do You Live Near a Terrorism ‘Hot Spot’ According to This Map?

Researchers, as part of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) under the Department of Homeland Security, are trying to come up with a way to better predict where and when terrorist attacks would happen on U.S. soil.
To start, the researchers from the University of Maryland and University of Massachusetts-Boston mapped all events considered terrorism since 1970 to 2008 in the United States (below). This established areas they deemed terrorism “hot spots” but also revealed that terrorism is actually “widely dispersed”. So widely dispersed that every state has experienced some act of terrorism in some form, according to the report. The report defines a hot spot as an area where more than the average number of terrorist attacks have taken place — the average for the U.S. is six.

Geographic Concentration of Terrorist Attacks in the U.S., 1970 – 2008 (Image: START)
The research found that a third of all terrorist attacks during that time-frame studied took place in five metropolitan cities — Manhattan, New York (343 attacks); Los Angeles County, Calif. (156 attacks); Miami-Dade County, Fla. (103 attacks); San Francisco County, Calif. (99 attacks); and Washington, D.C. (79 attacks).
“Mainly, terror attacks have been a problem in the bigger cities, but rural areas are not exempt,” Gary LaFree, director of START and lead author of the new report, said in the University of Maryland press release.
“The main attacks driving Maricopa into recent hot spot status are the actions of radical environmental groups, especially the Coalition to Save the Preserves. So, despite the clustering of attacks in certain regions, it is also clear that hot spots are dispersed throughout the country and include places as geographically diverse as counties in Arizona, Massachusetts, Nebraska and Texas,” LaFree added.

Geographic Concentration of Fatal Terrorist Attacks in the U.S., 1970 - 2008 (Image: SMART)
In addition to tracking areas prone to terrorist attacks, the study authors saw trends in timing of terrorist attacks and type of motivation behind the attack. For example, co-author Bianca Bersani, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, said that terrorist attacks they classified as extreme left-wing — “groups that want to bring about change through violent revolution rather than through established political processes” – were limited almost exclusively to the 1970s. Whereas in the 1980s terrorism with religious motivations took place and the 1990s had extreme right-wing attacks by “groups that believe that one’s personal and/or national “way of life” is under attack and is either already lost or that the threat is imminent”.
The Huffington Post points out that there is a correlation between the type of attack that took place and location:
The research showed a strong association between the county in which a terrorist attack occurred and its motivation. “For example,” a University of Maryland statement notes, “Lubbock County, Texas, only experienced extreme right-wing terrorism while the Bronx, New York, only experienced extreme left-wing terrorism.”
Overall, the report found that terrorist attacks in the United States are at lower levels than other times in its history, even though the threat of terrorism has more public attention now – usually in the form of terrorism against the country by religious extremists. The research also found that “foiled plots” for potential terrorist attacks increased during this time.
Ultimately, with more research, the group hopes to gain understanding about the link between what is considered terrorism and ordinary crime in order to better predict when and where terrorist events could happen. Next, the research will be looking into language diversity and its relationship with terrorist attacks and ordinary crime.

Posted on January 31, 2012 at 7:59pmAre you sure this is not real? Looks like real reports of real terrorism going worldwide and growing each year. Government doesn’t need a flase flag. All they have to do is send mixed signals to our enemies, concoct dangerous foreign policies to cause and or force them into action. Look we are steam rolling the world right now and they see its now or never for their own regimes survival. What did Putin say recently? “America thinks it can run the whole world” or something to that effect. Dear Leader wants the world to hate us and he came in with his policy of showing how stupid we were in the past but he makes not real changes to our forward progress concerning the same threats that faced Bush. He acts like he is not part of it and he is only a spectator but thats exactly the stuff he is selling. Its my country, its out of control and I cannot do anything about it, this is why the baton has been passed to the EU and NATO recently and for the little kinetic action in Libya, all this was an attempt to get his hands clean but still supporting the mission set forth by Bush SR/Clinton/BUSHJR and now Dear Leader himself. Be not conned here. We are being set up folks.

Posted on January 31, 2012 at 8:17pmLook……no doubt, there are maybe hundreds of radical Islamic cells in the US. How can there not be, what with our borders unprotected. Their agents are embedded in our cities and towns, waiting to mobilize.
There will be another attack at some point, but the in-roads by Islamists using our laws against us are really just as dangerous. They will peck away by winning court decisions based on charges of Islamophobia, etc.
How about the Col. Boykin situation at West Point? Isn‘t that a perfect example of Muslims using our laws of PC’ness against us? Then, of course, you have to ask yourself, “why wasn’t Maj. Hasan accused of a hate crime? Why was there no outrage by the media? Why wasn’t he openly called an Islamic terrorist?
Since we have a tolerant society, and Islam does not, would you not say that the playing field is tilted in Islams favor? Take your American lifestyle to Mecca to find out.
Will there be a tipping point at which someone says…“enough”, and takes the law in their own hands?
What will the governments reaction be if there is widespread vigilantisim against Muslims, regardless of what acts they have committed? Will guns be confiscated? Will Americans be imprisoned?
The UN is also waiting for a chance to implement gun restrictions. Our Constitution will be replaced by the UN Constitution. Think it can’t happen? You better read some books about the UN, as they will be a player if chaos descends on the streets of America.

As far as terrorism, there are Right Wing Extremists, Left Wing Extremists, Muslim Radicals, Mexican Drug Cartels, all kinds of Extremists. Any Extremist has only one purpose in mind. To force you to agree with their way of thinking or assume room temperature. Also, many Terrorist Attacks listed on the map are plots that were stopped BEFORE they had a chance to happen. It is just part of the lumping process. People like to lump everyone together, look at what you do in your job. Not all passengers are terrorists and yet they are all treated as though they were. People don’t like being treated like criminals for wanting to get on a plane and visit mom or conduct business. Many of our experiences have been with rude, unyielding people who don’t display an ounce of common sense. Then there are the stories where 90 year old woman in wheelchairs are being asked to remove their depends.
Traveling by plane is a humiliating experience and quite honestly, between needing to get to the airport 2 hours before a flight, flight delays because of bad weather 1200 miles away, always being stuck between two fleshy-flyers in the middle seat, having to choose between being felt up by a stranger or being exposed to radiation, taking off shoes, then making the choice between overpriced mediocre food or starving, being treated rudely by TSA and airline personnel…… it just isn’t convenient anymore. My family isn’t doing it. If we want to go overseas, we can take a boat, for everything else it is load up the SUV and drive.

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 8:25amThere are people in different agencies that work day and night on preventing terrorist attacks. The idea that there are none, as nothing (major) happened since 9/11 is false. Nothing major happened because some potentially major plot have been caught in inception or staging phases, thanks to people that are mentioned in the first sentence.
The map is, though, largely a result of statistical analysis and a flawed one at that. It has no predictive value, because it is built on false, pc-fied premises.
To get a better picture, let’s use an example of Canada. Many would agree that Canada, relative to US, has no ambitious programs in the area of foreign policy. In that sense, there should be no occurrences of “blowbacks”, or minimal volume in comparison with US.Yet, CSIS has foiled numerous plots, predominantly from element associated with radical Islam groups, that proportionally nearly correspond to the volume in US. Why is that? Of course, CSIS does not trumpet out their successes, because some threats don’t have time limit and have a continuous character–the PR is not worth to have the ongoing investigations jeopardized.
This is happening with the background of political/demographic jihad present. I appreciate what these people are doing (US/CA), regardless of the political environment, and often figuring out how to do their job with BS policies raining down from their superiors.
Taking these threats not seriously or thinking it is false flag disinfo is juven

The PC-speak is a) hampering out ability to piont out the enemy and b) extends the vague “definition” to cover what may not have been originally intended.
OTOH, during the second Clinton’s tenure, his administration tried to label some Christian groups as extremists and “enemy”, so it is hard to say to what degree that aspect is still present and not due just to PC language code.

The TSA is being used as a bludgeon on the American people. It is part of Cass Sunstein’s “nudge, nudge” policy, pushing the people into incremental docility, complacency, meek compliance and passivity one step at a time — as the MAObama statists reduce freedom and liberty piece by piece, day by day. Think red light cameras, groping and/or irradiation at the airports, VIPR teams conducting internal checkpoints on public highways, covert backscatter x-ray scanners prowling the highways lighting up law-abiding citizens as they go about their business, Terahertz Detection scanners searching for concealed weapons on anyone out in the public, helicopters, drones, monitoring of the internet, e-mails and Twitter. Yep, nothing to see here, folks, just move along….

Posted on February 1, 2012 at 4:47pmODWulf – Didn’t the SS consider their fellow citizens to be their countrymen? Didn’t the SS love their country as much as anyone else?
The TSA is a tool of the MAObama regime and they are very effectively utilizing Cass Sunstein’s “Nudge, Nudge” theory – bumping the American people a little at a time into being completely docile, timid and passive, and cowed. Cowed to accept being groped and/or irradiated at our airports in violation of their Constitutionally protected rights. Intimidated to accept VIPR checkpoints on public highways, frightened into accepting red light cameras, drones, helicopters, that record their every move in public; covert mobile backscatter x-ray scanners that irradiate innocent citizens while in their vehicles or on foot to detect concealed weapons, Terahertz Detection scanners to do the same thing; fearful of protesting license plate scanners on police cars that can scan every license plate in sight and record who is where, when by the thousands; Peacemaker armored cars (Ft. Lauderdale) outfitted with surveillance cameras to keep watch on average citizens the police decide to target.
Yep, that’s it – no problem – the TSA is just a bunch of great folks surveilling, illegally searching and irradiating their fellow American citizens for the sake of a paycheck and following their orders. Sounds a little like the SS, doesn’t it?

““The main attacks driving Maricopa into recent hot spot status are the actions of radical environmental groups, especially the Coalition to Save the Preserves.”
We have Islam to worry about, for sure. However, did you know that the environmental movement is just as radical? No, I didn’t think so.
Do a search on Barstow-to-Vegas race, but read more than one site. That race was stopped by using , mostly, the desert tortoise as an endangered species. It didn’t matter that there were no tortoise burrows in the race route (a biologist brought in by the BLM proved it) , it just mattered that there were people riding motorcycles in the desert.
It’s a religion to the Environs. Maybe if a few million people die, they will be happy or, maybe, if we just leave our homes, cars, and destructive ways behind, sit in a cave and eat leaves (not endangered ones, now), that will work. Don’t hold your breath.

We need to differentiate between blowing up a religious building with worshippers inside form burning one down at night to defacing it with spray paint.
I am not discounting the ill effects have graffiti spreading racist or other hateful messages but they are a few years to a few decades down the line from progroms or sectarian violence.

I grew up there and do recall that during the late 70s there were eco-terrorists nailing railroad spikes into the trees so that when they went through the mill bad things would happen. There was at least one fatal incident from that at the lumber mill in nearby Lewiston, ID.I would imagine they are counting that sort of thing here.

Islam is the only modern religion where many converts are involved in acts of terror and plots to murder.
You don’t find that with new converts to Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism or any other religion.
This to me proves that Islam is a dangerous Satanic cult because instead of finding ‘peace’ and ‘love’ many new converts to Islam have been hate filled and evil like advocating murder and assassination.
The Media instead of trying to cover up and make excuses for Islam should focus on why so many new converts to Islam have been behind so many acts of terrorism and plots.
