Do You Think These Photos Show the Impact of War on Soldiers’ Faces?

Dutch photographer Claire Felicie captured before, during and after photos of servicemen in the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps in an effort to show the effects of war on their faces.

The photos in Felicie’s collection, called “Here are the Young Men (Marked),” were taken between a 2009-2010 deployment to Uruzgan, Afghanistan, according to Lens Culture.

My husband joined the Marines at 19 years old and was wounded in Vietnam. He said the experienced matured him. He said, “I put away childish things.” He learned what was important
and after facing death, he said he knew he could give his life for me and the kids without hesitation.

I know what shows the effects of war..it’s their face, but its also when they come home and get a job as a police officer and commence to beat and tase a homeless man to death.

When they tase a 14yr old girl for not allowing herself to be brutalized phycially by a cop.

The second man: he looks determined in the first photo. The second he has light in his eyes as if he is fullfilling a mission and it is fulfilling him In his third he looks hardened but accomplished.

I’m not trying to belittle the accomplisments or hardships of your husband and the time he served, but I served during the cold war, and I felt it matured me, too. I didn’t face death, but did face heavier responsibilities than I had ever imagined. I tracked subs, and had to remind myself (as a young 20-something girl) that I was just doing a job. Knowing where all the Russian subs are isn’t fun. Thank your husband for his service. I know what he means about it teaching you what we’re fighting for.

You may have…other issues… but I’d never threaten you or your family. I’m a threat to the Police State. Based on your response, you definitely ought not wield a taser in a professional capacity. Even in war, if you reacted like that to one of our unit OR an enemy, I’d put you down myself. You’re a liability and you would put us all in danger.

Vboy and FF. FYI the U.S. Supreme Court actually set the standard for the Use of Force Model that involves the tasing of that 14 year old. The reason the Taser is below the use of strikes and muscle compliance techniques is that when you are struggling with someone, even a 14 year old girl, things can happen that cause serious bodily harm, like broken fingers, arms legs, dislocated shoulders etc. The Taser simply in a pain compliance technique. Speaking as a war vet and a member of the civilian law enforcement community who has been Tased in order to get certified, I have to agree with the Supreme Court on this one. The Taser is 5 seconds of wanting it to end YESTERDAY. But I got up, shook it off and walked away with no after effects.

I’d rather see her deal with that 5 seconds than risk her being in a cast for 6 weeks.

On the subject of our guys coming back and abusing people…I’ve got news for you, the REAL problem is that the ones who are having issues are committing suicide or having family problems. Problems on the job are usually addressed directly. There are, I admit a few departments who don’t deal with it adequately, but as a percentage it’s miniscule and far below the damage on the personal level.

I’ve got a better direction for you to focus your zeal. Get hold of your Congressman and Senators and have them focus a little effort to early detection and intervention efforts all four branches are working on.

The fact of the matter is that cop used the force of a taser at his discretion against a 14yr old girl.
“I was just following orders” doesn’t fly with me. Tasers are deadly weapons. They are LESS lethal, yet still DEADLY weapons. I’d rather you not tase my daughter because she might die, thank you. if you cannot restrain a 14yr old girl without causing broken anything, bruised anything, then you are not fit to be a cop, nor are you fit to be a parent.

I understand the suicide issue and I sympathize with the victims, but who do you think I blame? Definitely not the suicide victim. But that doesn’t directly affect me as a citizen. It directly affects me where the rubber meets the road. Now we have cops being militarized and federalized with the most aggressive and psycho/socio-pathic being promoted and celebrated, such as the retired Officer Simone of Cleveland. They’re coodinating with military and Homeland Security (TSA) performing random checkpoints in violation of Posse Comitatus.

There is a lot to be said for the stress felt upon a person making life or death decisions. You see it in our Presidents, military, law enforcement, and people who place themselves in those situations. It impacts much more than just appearances. When you have a second or less to decide someone’s life or death; it changes you. When you know your decision will be challenged step by step by those who have hours to dissect your immediate response in action; it makes it worse.

After serving in the ARMY and Law Enforcement, I’m not at all surprised by the changes these photos show. What the photos do not show is the changes the individuals feel as it relates to their thoughts and personal life. That is why a simple “thank you” means so much to them.

V-Man, I support you right to think and say what you wish. I have fought for your right and will protect it. “he said he knew he could give his life for me and the kids without hesitation.” That is an understandable position regarding the ones you love. My complaint; is our foreign policy correct, is it really in defense of the homeland? I have come to believe it is not. The policy is made by the same corrupt politicians and bureaucrats that have given us $15 trillion in debt and widespread cronyism. I have come believe the never-ending war drums are just another facet and tool of Big Government and if you support this policy of unending war like all but one of our Republican candidates you support Big Government.

The most difficult thing to deal with after coming back was not my experiences while deployed, but coming back to the Country I love and seeing so many people willing to give up their freedom in exchange for the (perceived) security of government guaranteed housing, jobs, food and health care. Fighting for people‘s freedom that don’t want it can be disheartening.

Does combat age a person? Yeah, depending on the severity of the deployment. But one must also factor in that the men are at least one year older AND have spent a tour in a very harsh, non-climate controlled, dusty, dirty environment. If you spent a year hiking up the appalachian trail it might make you age faster also.

You don’t need the impact of war to have that mindset. Heck, just look around at the current state of affairs. Whether you are an Occupier or a Tea Party Member, their are many on each side that would think that the world would be better without the other. You do not have to look at politics, just look at the words from each group.

There is evil a foot in the common day to day affairs. It is not only domestic either. Iran, Korea, China, Russia, EU, etc… Tensions are rising and are reaching a pinnacle that could swing either way. Question is, do we seek to heal or hurt… It is a personal question we all need to ask ourselves and answer.

Yeah, I don’t see any big differences frankly. What seems to be fairly consistent is that the first picture in each series shows at least the hint of a smile. The pictures really mean nothing. Certainly what war does is no more of an effect in the pictures than the passage of time and what it does to your face.

What‘s important is what’s in the brain, instead of what’s on the face. Could be good. Could be bad. You never know. A guy working in a support area has a very different level of stress than a guy in combat operations. I had friends that served in Vietnam. One worked in the data processing center, and another was a grunt out in the field. They had completely different experiences during the war. What each of these guys do in their military careers needs to be determined before anyone can come up with theories on what it might do to their face. It’s really a rather silly question.

I can see it as well. War is never good! But sometimes necessary evil is still out there.

I see the effects of out door weather. The true effects are on the inside.

That’s right. You should see folks that spend a lot of time out working construction.

If these photos show anything it is the face of wisdom and more importantly, maturity, that comes from the real life experience of the human condition and the impact of war.

We could use more Mature young men in this nation, that is for sure.

If the after photo is supposed to be the horrid one, (I really don’t see a difference in these photos) then do not look at a photo of me *after* I wake up in the morning. Hell, it’d be a sin just to take a pic of me then.

The spark in their eyes has dimmed and they look sleep deprived. If the eyes are windows to the soul, these souls are obviously damaged. Even without war, a lot of people look like this today. (empty and depressed)….and I think, with good reason too.

Yes, it shows. How could anyone, especially if thay have seen combat, not have the effects on their faces?

War is an ugly yet necessary business. That we ask our young people to do this; they should be well taken care of when they return. This cost should be borne by the FED; NOT caring for the ‘poor’, that is the responsibility of the individual State.

    War wears… so does time.

Show your son before, during and after a divorce.

    War wears… so does experience.

War wears on more than a man’s face. Their eyes tell it all. Brave, strong chaps.

War is hell and yes it does reflect on their faces and in their eyes. The eyes have seen every imaginable horror. Its something they will never be able to erase from their minds. But I pray that they can with proper help from us all they can live the rest of their lives in peace and happiness. They truly deserve to.
