Does America Have a ‘Dental Care Crisis’? Wait Until You See What Taxpayer-Funded, Soros-Linked PBS Documentary Has to Say

Anyone who has heard Barack Obama‘s former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel’s say “you never want a serious crisis go to waste“ is understandably skeptical of the rush of ”crises” that have gripped the nation in recent years.  The president’s health care overhaul, for instance, was made to be a crisis of monumental proportions, with doctors cutting off people‘s feet and taking out children’s tonsils for profit, when in all likelihood the reforms have only worsened our situation.

Now, taxpayer-funded PBS is airing a documentary called “Dollars and Dentists” that may hold a peek into what America’s next “crisis” could be, at least if you listen to politicians.

Watch the trailer, below:

The website reads:

More than 100 million Americans don’t go to the dentist because they can’t afford it. Instead, they end up broke, in severe pain and struggling to get by. Sometimes they even die.

Our next film, Dollars and Dentists, a joint investigation by FRONTLINE and the Center for Public Integrity, examines the nation’s ruptured dental-care system, and some solutions to fix it. It airs Tuesday, June 26…

New research released today from the Kaiser Family Foundation highlights just how dire our dental-care system has become. One in four children have untreated tooth decay, now the most common chronic illness among school-aged children. Adults fare no better. And one in four Medicare beneficiaries are missing all of their natural teeth — a problem that threatens not only among the elderly, but also the very poor. Low-income families and racial and ethnic minorities tend to be disproportionately affected because they tend to lack access to care, according to Kaiser.

Part of the problem is that many people don’t have dental insurance and can’t afford steep out-of-pocket costs for care. Medicare offers no dental coverage unless it’s connected to a medical procedure, Kaiser reports. Poor children are covered by Medicaid, but many dentists’ offices turn them away because the profit margins are so low. In 2009, according to the Kaiser data, 19 million children had no dental insurancemore than twice the number who went without health insurance.

Any of that sound familiar?

To top it off, Newsbusters’ Mike Ciandella notes that the special was made in conjunction with the Center for Public Integrity, using the results of a Pew Research Center poll…both of which have received funding from billionaire activist George Soros. Pew got $500,000 in Soros money in 2009 alone, Newsbusters reports, while the Center for Public Integrity got $2,416,000 in Soros funds from 2000-2003.

The film does follow two private companies who have stepped in to help victims of the “crisis,” according to the film’s description, but the results are bleak.  One of the companies reportedly “takes advantage of some of its young patients” while the other charges “hefty financing rates.”  The viewer is likely left to conclude, then, that government initiatives are the best, last option.

What remains to be seen is how the American people tackle this “crisis,” if, indeed, it can even be sold as a “crisis” to begin with.  Because wouldn’t having teeth like the British, who have government-run dental care, be so much better?

Dental school tuition at my dental school is $670,000 for a 10 year loan counting principle and interest. A 25 year student loan is $1.25 million. Overhead at a dental office is usually about 60%. Embezzlement and uncollected fees take another 3-5% a year. Dentistry is an expensive business. You want dentistry to be cheaper? You can start by making the tuition for a 4 year education go down. Otherwise, the customer just gets those costs passed on to them.

This is also a ridiculous article. I belong to a charity group of dental students in Southern California. We travel to undeserved areas once a month and provide free dental care. We usually do about $50,000 dollars worth of free dental work on any given Saturday. Two weeks ago, I went up to Bakersfield and we stayed for a week. Our group did about $170,000 worth of free dental work on the migrant farm-worker children. I’ve been on international trips to Panama where we worked on Indian tribes who had never seen a dentist. We did about $130,000 worth of work in 4 days. All free. Many dentists are very charitable. If you want good dentistry, go to an ethical, good dentist. You’ll pay more for it, but you’ll most likely only end up paying once for it. Additionally, whatever we put in your mouth is not going to last long if you don’t brush your teeth twice a day, floss every night, stop drinking soda all the time, and see a dentist for cleanings every 6 months. Nothing we have will stand up to a dirty mouth for long. Catch it while it’s small; it’ll cost you less. If you have tooth decay, it‘s nobody’s fault but your own.

Here is a bright idea …. Brush your teeth. I have a sixteen year old child that has never had a cavity. We brush our teeth 2-3 times a day. We were considered low income for many years, but that was no excuse for us not to brush our teeth. I’m pretty sure that we are all aware that brushing your teeth will prevent cavities, so why do so many low income families just allow their kids to suck on candy all day and then send their kids off to bed without brushing their teeth? It must be because they are lazy and just don’t care. You can’t fix stupid.

I graduated dental school in 1991 and in that time i have seen reimbusements from insurance companies climb at a snails pace and overhead skyrocket.Every year there are more regulations passed by the gov’t that increases my overhead and do nothing to improve patient care one iota. Medicaid in the state of new york covers check ups cleanings, fillings and most routine dental procedures. If they would boot all the patients that are fleecing the medicaid system there would be plenty of money available to provide quality care for the patients who really need it. However the politicians would never say a word in fear of losing their voting base of illegals and americans who scam the system

This is such BS, actually African Americans have some of the best teeth you‘ll see on human beings and that’s no ethnic joke or jab, they just do. All it usually takes us regular brushing and easy on the sweet liquids that get in between every little cranny and nook in every tooth with every gulp…

worked for me for 46 years and I take a lot of meds for MS that normally cause tooth decay, but I just brush em couple times a day. But they act like every freaking problem a family encounters is something the gubmint needs to take care of!!!!

This nation WILL NOT be here when we die I’m now sadly convinced, we people over 35 I’d say, I’m 47, as when we’re dead, this group below us is deader than doornails. The Muzz are gonna eat THEM UP for lunch. ; (

I have had problems with my teeth all my life. While I was in the service, they took care of it and got my teeth in fair shape. After I got out, I couldn’t afford insurance. When I could afford it, I got insurance and had some work done. There was quite a bit to be done. I was determined to keep as many of my original teeth as I could. The total bill for my work was for $14,000. My out of pocket price was $7600 and I am still having problems, I have to go back. I was quoted to start with, out of pocket would be $460 the first visit then there would be more to do. I have to go back soon because one of them hurt. I have to pay $230 before they do anything and the rest in 30 days. My insurance cost me $430 a year for check ups and cleaning twice a year. I am retired now and I have to watch my money fairly closely. Retirement is supposed to be a rest time, but I may have to go back to work to afford to get my teeth fixed. I still am not going to pull all of them.

I am more than willing to sit in a less than prestigious waiting room with my own book; rather than a posh new smelling waiting room. The wait time in both is about the same; but hey if that new office smell is worth 2-3times the cost to you- pay for it.

Working in the dental industry for many years this summary does ring true…… the cost of dental care is out of reach for many elderly people and the poor. Medicaid dental insurance is pathetic and most dentist wont even consider accepting it, the red tape and what it pays is pathetic. Dental insurance is worthless, it pay minimal and many dentist have went to straight private pay! Most dentist offer financing through high interest finance companies which for most people this is the route taken for costly dental care. take care of your teeth people, make sure your kids take care of their teeth and when things get too bad you can have them pulled and false teeth made for around 5k………cheaper than a car loan…………….

BTW dental care IS paid for in many states for the “poor” and the elderly. But like all government programs, you get minimal care, as in the state will only pay for extractions when a root canal could save the tooth. But many dentists and dental schools provide community dental care for free for those in dire need. Look at the English; they have notoriously bad teeth because of their government “health care” which has resulted in many dentists opening up private practices that only take remuneration from the patients themselves. The free market has a way of solving all these problems. You do not want the government involved.

I actually agree we do have a dental crisis. while this story ends up saying that the “answer” would be the usual lib response to take over the dental system we all know that is a joke. the main theme here is INSURANCE companies in both medical ad dental being the issue. I am tired of them and used to own an insurance brokerage that I sold off. I have spent 15k the last year between 2011 to current on my teeth and my childs. I have a nasty disease that causes dental problems as a side effect. It is absolutely ridiculous the amount of power we have given to insurance companies. no one is good having dental insurance you pay more than you put in there is no possible way to “get your money’s worth” so to speak. My husband just had all of his pulled a few years back and optedfor fake ones as implants are just ridiculous. Who knows what will happen but we need major insurance reform in this country

Dental insurance is a complete joke. It is not insurance but a discount program that does not even begin to pay the cost of dental care. When it cost $600 for a crown and the maximum annual benefits are $1500 does not cover it. I went in and got an estimate of almost $10,000 and that was doing the minimum. I would gladly pay triple the monthly premiums if it covered things like medical insirance does. Becuase people cannot afford dental care things just get progressively worse. I know more people opting to just go with dentures at the age of 40 instead of the constant gutting of their bank accounts.

I would be thriled to pay only $600 for a crown. You are right about dental insurance. It pays very little. Sadly, I have been cursed with weak teeth that run in the family. I wasn’t helped by the fact a dentist slapped me across the face when I was 6. He gave me a shot to deaden a tooth before he pulled it. The shot didn’t work, so when he started pulling it I cried and he hit me. That was before people sued for things like that. It took much effort for my parents to get me back to the dentist after that. My husband and I have had to put off vacations and sacrifice other things we wanted to pay for our dental care – but we do it. We don’t expect others to pay for us. And we do everything we can to care for our teeth and taught our kids to do the same. One son was almost 30 before he had his first cavity – inspite of the weak teeth genes he inherited.

I worked for a dentist and it is a vicious cycle. First, patients do not take care of their teeth no matter how many times they are instructed in how to do it. Second, insurance does not cover services at 100% and insurance companies dictate how much dentists can charge so low profit and with medicaid patients there is no profits. Dentists are losing money with medicaid patients. Third, in New Mexico, and most likely other states, dental offices are heavily regulated thus dentists have to pay fees, comply with other regulations, etc. However, abortion clinics do not have regulations so they have a higher profit margin. So, it’s harder for dentists in New Mexico to make a living and abortionists are raking in the $ dismembering preborn humans.

Dental insurance was put in place as a supplemental insurance. It was never meant to cover 100% of dental treatment. I have worked for 30 years in pediatric dentistry. Kids have a higher rate of tooth decay today because of poor diets and parents not taking the time to brush and floss their kids teeth. Mom, Dad and the kids all have I-phones, mom and daughters have manicures and pedicures, then they complain they don’t have the money for dental care. It’s all about priorities. There is a dental crisis, but it is from neglect, not because of government intervention or non intervention.

Even medications that cause dry mouth can be treated and pose little risk. It all comes down to hygiene, brush and floss and you will be fine. Get a dental exam and cleaning twice a year. Fix it while it’s a small problem, by the time it hurts- it will be costly. People blame everything but themselves, but they only have themselves to blame.

      Hi DEP,

I just saw your response. Here are a few suggestions.

      - In my county, they have a program called “Fill the Gap” for low income dental care. Do a internet search to check your country using key words of your county, low income, dental and see what you get.
      - Check with dental offices to see who accepts Medicaid patients. I don’t know if you are on Medicaid but the dentists that accept Medicaid will likely know of other resources available for you in your area.
      - Check with homeless shelters and local food banks. They usually know who provides medical and dental assistance for low income individuals or can refer you to others.
      - Check directly with the Medicaid office helpline for your county. Even if you aren’t on Medicaid, they may have contacts.

I hope this helps get you started. I’ll try to check back here in a day or two to see if I can be of further assistance.

Soros could have paid for many dental exams with the $2.9 million he paid for this special.

Also think of all the money Obama wasted on green energy and GSA .but Dentist are very crooked. Sometimes they cause more problems than they cure.

Amen to that! It is stunning what impact Soros could really have on the world if he were truly trying to help people versus advancing his satanic agenda.

I’m seventy years old and have always paid for my own dental care. As a child I hated to go to the dentist, BECAUSE my dentist did NOT deaden any of my teeth he drilled on. I don’t know if my mother could have paid more for deadening of pain. I don’t think so. That’s just the way it was in a small town in my day. And yes I believe SOME parents aren’t taking there kids to the dentist. Their making payments on the new truck.

I am in my 50′s .. yes our dentist had a “high speed drill” so you didn’t “need” novicane .. I have news .. yes you did! I know that pain! People now would never be able to take it … at least he gave my dad some whiskey .. I got nothing.
