Does French D-Day ‘Art Installation’ Desecrate Omaha Beach?

Does French D Day Art Installation Desecrate Omaha Beach?

An installation of 1,000 casts of Russian, German and American combat helmets of WWII which also represent turtles, to denounce global violence, created by French artist Rachid Khimoune, is seen on Omaha Beach in Colleville sur Mer, western France, Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the eve of the D-Day Anniversary. (AP Photo/Vincent Michel)

Yep, that’s a combination of a combat helmet merged with a sea turtle. And yes, a huge number of the turtles were spread across Omaha Beach today. Why? Well here is the AP version:

COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France (AP) — French artist Rachid Khimoune has installed 1,000 sculptures shaped like sea turtles on Omaha Beach to mark the 67th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

AP

The turtles’ “shells” are molded from American, Russian and German combat helmets, sprouting flippers and long-necked heads. The sculptures were arranged Sunday along the sandy expanses of Omaha Beach — where the Allies won a pivotal victory against the Nazis.

Some 215,000 Allied soldiers, and roughly as many Germans, were killed or wounded during D-Day and the ensuing nearly three months it took to secure the capture of Normandy.

A French artist of Berber origin, Khimoune is a sculptor, painter and video artist whose work often features everyday objects.

But the never-not-insightful blogger Zombie is asking the key question: “How could the French government countenance this art installation, which manages to be both juvenile and deeply insulting at the same time?”

Good question!

More Zombie:

I ask you: So, would the artist prefer that the Allies had refrained from committing any icky violence and instead not invaded Normandy, so as to preserve peace? In which case, France would to this day be calledFrankenreich, the western province of Greater Germany?

I mean, OK, sure, stupid artists make stupid art making stupid points all the time. But the French government gave permission for this particular statement to be made on Omaha Beach on the anniversary of D-Day.

The ghosts of 10,000 men who sacrificed their lives that day to save France all say “You’re welcome!” in unison.

Making it worse, Zombie has discovered that the Omaha Beach desecration is not an isolated incident for this artist.  You’ll want to see that picture, and read a key passage Zombie has selected from George Orwell by clicking right here.

For what it’s worth, I have a video of Khimoune playing with his turtles on location but before you hit play on the video…click the Zombie link (here it is again) to see the still picture first.  Then you can play the video to be even more disgusted:

And for the record here is the posed still picture of the artist looking quite proud of his creation:

What else does art do if not to confront sacred ideas and draw atttention to and question to them?

    This, somewhat, works.

It calls into question the American importance to the French Resistence, the cult of Churchill and foolishness of, then, perceived Nazi military-prowess.

If this battle had went the other way we wouldn’t see this art/expression.

    Think on this thought.

It just shows how much the French appreciate the fact that we, the British, Canadians and forces from other countries put their lives on the line for them. Had it not been for the concerted efforts of the allied forces, the official language of France would now be German. The French have and always will be a bunch of clowns. I think that Obummer should move to France. He and his ethos would fit right in to the French scheme of world politics.

Appreciate the sentiment, but realistically, not to have invaded France in 1944 might have meant facing the Soviets across the English Channel rather than in Central Europe, and waging the Cold War on much less favorable terms than turned out to be the case.

and that normandy invasion was a suicide mission but when reminded of that fact the anti mislim bigots change the subject and tell us why they were willing to send americans on suicide missions;the evil was so great that it was just and right to have suidcide missions. Then the criticism of muslims suicide missions switches to how their cause is unjust.of course that’s in the eye of the beholder;they believe they are fighting for independance from american and israeli agressors.one man’s suicide mission[normandy] is another man’s barbarity[ muslim suicide missions].of course our bombs murdered more civilians then any muslim suicide bomber ever did!

Fret not about this maggot and his collection of turtles. On YT, look up Sabaton – Primo Victoria and find the video of the song to footage from Saving Private Ryan. You’ll see and hear how it was done.

The French have no proper appreciation of their mortality, and how closer they came to being a permanent adjunct to Nazi Germany. No matter, the arrogant are the first to get blindsided, and the first to be laughed at for their foolishness. Such is life, such is fate…such is old-world comedy. I won’t shed a tear when they become an oppressive fundamentalist state much as the bulk of Europe is headed toward.

Rose, you seem to be fixated on the thought that America is at fault for something here, and that we are fated to be destroyed by our strengths. I think otherwise: America has been the breeding ground and main purveyor of the past two economic/scientific singularities, and the third such singularity should be within the next couple of decades. Given the drastic nature of such changes, and what is likely coming, I have no fear we will become a socialist state. More to the point, I have a feeling the next great paradigm will finally annihilate the last vestiges of the perverse and inherently ineffective socialist / communist / globalist ideas. There is no room in humanity’s future for centralized corruption and collectivist crippling of the common man, woman, and child; true progress will annihilate any such barriers.

      Careful Blazers,
The Kabyle people of Algeria are some of the most anti-Islamist people you’ll find. I don’t know his religion, but this guy’s probably not Muslim.
And another thing about art. The creator may have his idiotic ideas about what the death of so many brave soldiers fighting for freedom might mean, but we don’t have to buy them.
I’ve been at Omaha Beach, and let me tell you, it’s a pretty wide expanse of beach. Seeing a thousand white helmets there (my imagination can filter out the turtle part) would actually go along way toward helping my mind come to grips with, and bring to life the immense human sacrifice and cost that occurred on that beach on that day in a selfless effort to push back totalitarianism, and secure liberty. I refuse Khimoune’s own interpretation, and turn it on its ear, and thank God for those deaths and for the necessary global violence that stopped Hitler. May we be willing to rise to the challenge if, God forbid, another enemy of freedom ever gain so much entrenched influence.

Why is the Blaze ignoring the story about Rick Perry and the forced injections of young girls. And how did Perry become a millionaire while holding office???

      ===========================================================================

Because unlike you, I am sure that the researchers at TB understand how to use the internet to find out what is truth and what is a lie. It took me all of 30 seconds to find the story you are talking about on PolitiFact who gave it a rating of “Pants on Fire” meaning it is a HUGE lie.

Think for yourself. Do your own research.

Typical frog mentality, to reduce their liberators to slow mindless turtles. The great difference those giants on that beach knew their mortality and still went forth into a hail of fire that few could understand in the world of replay.

True Heroes have lost their luster fore the glare of HD and Blue-ray. Which have reframed history and events to fit an agenda. The only thing is history has no interpretation or agenda but hard facts and reality no matter the shading or tilt of the lenses…

Frogs live to diminish and humiliate the sacrifice those bushwah Americans. Reducing them to creepers in the muck.

This is typical of the Blaze.

So many intriguing and serious stories to cover, such as the sneak attack on the 2nd Amendment by Obama with Operation Gunrunner and Fast and Furious, and how Adam Gadahn- CIA agent, is now calling for random shootings, as the Obama anti-gun agenda merges with CIA-sponsored false-flag terror.

They carry the water for Obama because he is a warmongering liberal (a neocon) and they are neocons. They’re so happy to see the anti-war left silenced by Obama and his warmongering. The neocons want 3 more wars to go with the 3-4 we gave going already. They want total chaos WW3 so their cronies can get rich lending us the money to destroy ourself.

Ignorance has no skin color or race and hatred comes in all shades. Ideologies‘ of warmongers and power hungry elite leaders who believe they could live other people’s lives better than they could is no new idea. History did not start at the creation of United States and slavery did not start in the south but goes back to the beginning of known history.

As a Cuban born American, It is my understanding that race is not the impediment of a person but their ideology “IS”

      Update:

I called this morning to express my disappointment with the art display. First question I was asked if I was with an American newspaper. I said no just an American citizen calling about the display and how it dishonors the American soldiers who died on that beach to liberate their country. I was then told that no one was available they were all in meetings.

I have now sent an e-mail. I was polite on the phone call and in the e-mail but emphasized that the display dishonors those who blood was shed on their behalf.

At least France will know that there are some Americans who are offended by this display.

As an art major and now professional artist for 27 years… I said it years ago and I’ll say it again, 99% of “modern” art is what people who want to be artists but have no talent do. My art classes in college were full of people like this. And the professors went right along with it so they would appear “cool” with it all. The art community has for a long time been totally engrossed in it. The emperor is wearing no clothes…when will somebody point it out? Until then we will have more of this type of junk.
This is disgusting. It isn’t art and it is offensive.
