Does Jon Huntsman Know What the ‘Colbert Bump’ Really Is?

Jon Huntsman Talks About Stephen

Fresh off his appearance Monday on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman spoke at George Washington University Tuesday night. He’s sure his interview on the comedy show will prove to be a benefit to his campaign.

“We got the ‘Colbert bump’ last night,” Huntsman joked to a full auditorium of more than 200 students and faculty. During his interview Monday, Stephen Colbert asked Huntsman if he was “ready for the Colbert bump,” a phenomenon in which political candidates get a surge in donations following an appearance on the comedy show. “I am so ready for the Colbert bump,” Huntsman replied.

But either Huntsman didn’t know what the “Colbert bump” is, or he didn‘t know it’s a boost exclusive to Democrats who appear on the show. Republicans see no gain, as reported by the “Washington Monthly” back in 2008. Here’s a graph they published to illustrate:

Jon Huntsman Talks About Stephen

We asked Huntsman if he was aware that traditionally, the “Colbert bump” has only been experienced by Democrats who come on the show. “We’re going to put that to the test. I think we’re going to prove otherwise,” he told The Blaze.

Huntsman’s daughters were in tow for the the speech. “If you can’t find anything to like about me,” Huntsman said, “you’re going to find something to like about  my daughters.” He asked them to stand. One wore a Burberry shawl, another hipster eyeglasses and the third, a purple dress that matched the candidate’s tie.

Per usual, they tweeted from the event:

Of course he knows. It’s that little, almost un noticable, lump that looks like a half a roll of pennies in his pocket. It‘s what gives Colbert his ’strength.’

Written in the Weekly Standard Blog today: And the fact that people question his true conservatism is hardly a disqualifier from the GOP nomination, if history is any guide. After all, people questioned the beliefs of George H. W. Bush, Bob Dole, and John McCain, and they all won the nomination.”

This was in reference to strong points of Romney. Must truly be the beliefs of the eastern blue blood RINOS. If Bush 41 had been a string conservative (read my lips, no new taxes) he would not have reached across the aisle like his son did as well. They need a good dose of TEA at the Weekly Standard. I enjoy Crystal on Fox Sunday – but this nonsense keep popping up.

I bring it up as a RINO like huntsman must be a fallback candidate for establishment republicans if Romney falls from their polling graces. Wonder why there is not the dust-up over Romney and his visit to Ohio like there was for the stupid ad pushed by Cain manager. Ultimately, the Cain ad was a push to get the narcissistic manager some recognition – a fringe guy that desires attention.
Now that I think about it – the Standard had the video of the commercial plastered all over yesterday…huh…habits of RINOS die hard and it appears they resemble the MSM.

I consider him a notch above Romney. At least for most things he’s been consistent and did Republican things in his State. Sure he’ll make noise about MMGW but nothing could come of it. So if Cain, Paul, Newt, Johnson, Santorum, Bachmann, and maybe Jimmy McMillan go down in a plane, then Huntsman has my vote.

      @ Down2theC

Huntsman was mostly “consistent and did Republican things in his State.” Ummmm . . . no, actually he was as progressive as he could be as Gov. of Utah. He campaigned for the nomination in favor of school choice and in favor of the Utah State Constitutional Ammendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman (and which prohibited state laws giving same sex couples essentially the same rights as married couples). He won the nomination. He was elected governor. The constitutional amendment passed. Then he wouldn’t support vouchers. Then the Republican-controlled senate had to stop the confirmation of a progressive Hunstman appointee for the utah Supreme Court. Then Huntsman said that he would support “domestic partnership” laws in Utah. How was the clown consistent? Oh, and “a notch above Romney”? That is a hoot. Romney had a solidly Democrat General Court (that’s the Massachusetts term for their legislature — I like it) to work with while Huntsman had a solidly Republican legislature in Utah. Huntsman was constantly making snide remaks about the legislature — he relished being at odds with the conservatives in Utah. While Gov. Herbert isn’t the best, Obumbler sure did Utah a favor by sending Huntsman to China.

@Chuck Stein and @Longing for change Most people support the domestic partnership laws in Utah including the LDS church and the SLC city council and most state congressman so that really isnt progressive. He created tons of jobs, he got rid of the Utah income tax and replaced it with a flat tax,and lowered all taxes in the state of Utah, and your “fact” that he never gave the vouchers…well the fact is the legislature opposed the vouchers but still implemented it and at the time it was implemented back in 2007 it was the largest school voucher program in the nation. Also implemented some of the strictest abortions laws in the nation. Under him Utah was first to implement the “show the woman the fetus picture”law, he also loosened Utah’s already very loose gun laws. He still has a very strong support in Utah and had a 80% approval when he left office and the haters only came out after he accepted a position from Obama to become the ambassador to China and saw him a some kind of a traitor. So i guess its true what they say “Haters gonna hate”

I saw a video of Huntsman at a protest by the chinese of their government. He was interviewed by a chinese blogger and spoke with him in perfect Mandarin. The video was subtitled. They asked what he was doing there, and he seemed honestly surprised that anyone knew who he was. He refused to answer and left. There is nothing GOP about that man, he’s a mole. I consider him a step BELOW Romney, who is also far to liberal to be GOP.

Jon is also deceitful. During the 2008 primary campaign, he said he was going to support Romney. Romney and his wife met with Huntsman and his wife for dinner to discuss. Romney laid out his campaign strategy. Shortly thereafter, Jon Huntsman became one of the McCain campaign finance committee chairs – taking Romney’s stragegy with him to the McCain camp.

      For more info: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/03/AR2011030305195.html

That Huntsman isn’t trying very hard to win the Republican nomination should raise red flags. He seems to be just showing up, going to typical liberal media outlets and winning them over. I have always felt, and do predict here on The Blaze, that he does not WANT to win the Republican nomination. He‘s just building name recognition to do something in Obama’s campaign. I even propose that Huntsman might be a replacement for Biden. Just think for a few minutes how that might play out against Romney as the GOP candidate? Think really hard, don’t just react.

Wow. I wonder how I missed that. It sure figures, though — Harry Reid & Jon Huntsman are very close politically.
      @ Brandonmerrill
A lot of misinformation in your post
“Most people support the domestic partnership laws in Utah including the LDS church and the SLC city council and most state congressman so that really isnt progressive.” Wrong, you might be thinking of “benefits” — but that is different from establishing a legal “domestic partner” legal status.
“He created tons of jobs” Wrong. Utahns created those jobs. “he got rid of the Utah income tax and replaced it with a flat tax” Wrong — Utah still has an income tax, but it is a flat tax. He “lowered all taxes in the state of Utah” — really? How do you know? Are you up on the tax rates in all counties? Also, I never presented as “fact” that he “never gave the vouchers” — I wrote that “he wouldn’t support vouchers”. See the difference? Huntsman stood on the sidelines.
“He still has a very strong support in Utah” — sure, among Democrats in particular.
Also, I never considered him a “traitor” for going to China as ambassador — I considered it sweet relief.

@1BAMBAM. Give me a break. There is nothing wrong with Jon Huntsman Jr.’s self-esteem. And it is not about his father’s money. I must say that I have a high opinion of the father. Low opinion of the son.

To judge one or the other upon the merits or the works of the other is wrong. Huntsman Sr. stands as his own man. Huntsman Jr. stands as his own man.

Huntsman has taken his own path in life, very different from his father’s. It was about choice, not measuring up.

Colbert pronounced COAL BERT… has always been a liberal hack. It is funny how his show in the beginning was less covertly liberally biased. Only when the producers realized they were actually appealing to the mainstream of America did they make him into the buffoon you see today.
