More than 40 years ago, American astronauts began landing on the moon during manned space missions. Each of the six times they landed, they left a U.S. flag, but how those flags are holding up decades has been a question many have asked over the years. NASA seems to have the answer now.

According to a blog post on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera website, new photos reveal all but one of the American flags seem to still be standing. Mark Robinson, wrote he was “a bit surprised that the flags survived the harsh ultraviolet light and temperatures of the lunar surface.”

It isn’t clear from the photographs what state the flags are in — Robinson speculates they are at least badly faded — but shadows cast by them picked up by the camera show they are at least in tact.

Robinson writes the lone flag that appears to be missing was thought long gone a while ago:

From the LROC images it is now certain that the American flags are still standing and casting shadows at all of the sites, except Apollo 11. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin reported that the flag was blown over by the exhaust from the ascent engine during liftoff of Apollo 11, and it looks like he was correct!

According to Robinson, the easiest way to spot the flags is to look at a series of different images of the area taken at various times during the day and watch the shadow change. Check out this time-lapse video with such a series of images showing the flag’s shadow at the Apollo 12 landing site:

Note: As is reported in the CBS News report above, the Stars and Stripes do not officially “wave” on the moon where there is no wind. The flag is slightly bunched and designed to remain stretched out, giving it a waving effect.

      Will China play God Bless America again when they land on the Moon. China is really on its way to Mars and has already tested its nuclear ion drive engine that will reduce the travel time to Mars to 3 to 4 months.

      Obama with the blessings of the Democrats has shut down and plowed over the US Space Program. If its a real windy day, maybe our Dutch windmills will generate enough power so we can watch the Chinese landings on Mars on our Chinese made big screen HDTVs.

      The Chinese will remove the US Flag and drive in their own. They will then spray F–K Y-U on the side of the lander and put labels on the Lunar Rover of MADE IN CHINA.

      if that flag is still there then Hubble can get a nice HD side shot and sell copies of it for profit but they cant so they wont, no new HD image of anything supposedly left on the moon exists.

      I have to agree with votersofny…Landing on the moon was a set up…staged…fake…My friends, we have never landed on the moon…Also what most of you don’t know is that the moon is infested with demons, evil spirits, fallen angels…but I don’t expect those with out the knowledge of the MOST HIGH to understand…So, continue to live your lives blind….Good Day…

      It is a hard pill to follow that the Moon Landing was as fake as Disney… But you must have shielded yourself from the facts, as you can see laid out in the many links posted here. I guess you are a TheBlaze employee, that are responsible for pushing this story down the page to prevent others from clicking on the links and seeing the truth from themselves. There is now way that a semi intelligent person that looks at the links here will believe that we went to the moon. I did look at them years ago, and then searched NASA’s website to see for myself, and I must say that NASA’s reaction to this, is even more condemning.

      It is like learning about basic astrology and it becomes self evident that the earth goes around the sun and not the other way around. But you my friend are like the person that will not try to learn basic astrology to confuse your made up mind….

      If we are wrong, and the “youtube” videos are fake or lies, then do tell me where I can get the truth? The fact is you won’t do that, because you take it as a personal insult, and you don’t want to find out you have been played for a fool your entire life…

      While the act of going to the moon seems fantastic, it really did happen. the reflectors that were left there are visible through a telescope. Nasa anticipated this kind of thinking long ago, before anyone landed on the moon.
      As for Mr. “The hubble can get a side shot”,…. well, ignorance of geometry seems to be your problem. Measure the difference of angle from moon to 2 points: The center mass of earth, and the widest orbit of the earth sattelite, Hubble. You still get an overhead view.

      Oh my goodness. I just saw a video on Youtube (From Fox surprisingly) that proves, without a “shadow” (watch the video and you’ll get that) that there was not, and could not, have been a moon landing!

      Your link about a person making a radio in the garage heard the transmission from the moon, is proof in light of the dozens of facts listed in the links here, is silly. They could transmit from satellites, or possibly sent an unmanned device to the moon where they could transmit from..     I still question whether we truly had the technology back then to make it to the moon and back. But these photos do not help answer any questions. So they want me to believe that with our ability to see a penny laying on the ground from a satellite in orbit, but these are the best photos they have of the moon and some possible flags! We can see far out into space but we have to use shadows to try and prove there are flags on the moon. So where are the other larger items they supposed left on the moon?

      I‘m not sorry to all the ’haters‘ of people who don’t believe, but I don’t trust one damn thing the government tells me. Like you said, we can see everything from satellite images (google maps) but we can’t see an accurate or convincing photo of the flag? So I guess I’m part of the 11% of those who don’t believe.       The moon at its perigee is over 10 times the altitude of the highest orbit that a sane person would use for a terrestrial mapping satellite. It’s too close and too bright for Hubble to focus on. Or else too dark for it to see anything. A satellite to look at the moon would have to be designed for the purpose, or else yield low-quality pictures. You’re not going to get a side-shot or anything to actually see the flags either since the same side of the moon always faces us.

      The hardest part (mechanically) of getting to the moon is getting into earth orbit and back down. From there the hardest part is the math to get your trajectories right, and you can precompute those months or even years ahead of time, leaving you needing only an accurate stopwatch and gyroscope to get there and back. The Space Shuttle was theoretically capable of trips to the moon and back, although we never used it for such. If the moon landing was a hoax, then so must have been the entire early space program, since once you’ve achieved orbit, getting to the moon and back is relatively easy, and if you fake it without actually sending a vehicle, the radio-telescopes watching the flight won’t pick up any transmissions from the non-existant craft. (The Russians would have had a field day with that.) And if we couldn’t achieve orbit, then where did the early satellites come from?

    I guess the proposed mission to Mars will be a hoax as well. Our goal the last few decades has been to go to Mars. It’s a more complicated mission than going to the moon. Most of the space funds have been directed toward getting to Mars and not going back to the moon although Neil Armstrong suggests our future should go through bases on the moon.

    The lack of flag fading under the ultraviolet radiation of unfiltered sunlight may represent lack of oxidation due to lack of oxygen in the lunar atmosphere. (Lack of an atmosphere for that matter).

The astronauts are caught lying, we have only been about 400 miles from earth as the radiation is so great that even our shuttle with 4″ of tiles and lead cannot protect the astronauts from the radiation. That is before you enter the Van Allen radiation belt, and not during a solar storm which is what we had in 69′…

      But you will likely go in your grave staying ignorant, or you know what I say to be true, and you are working for NASA, or being paid to help keep it covered up….

      Better question. If we went to the moon in 1969 ( and later missions) why is space exploration shuting down, not expanding. Stan Deyo says we have had the technology since the 1970s “to take ET home.” Some of the UFOs are ours. Do some research on Deyo, David Sereda and Boyd Bushman.

      @Smores The United States had 6 manned missions between 69 and 72, and there were many other unmanned missions by both the United States and the Soviet Union. We haven’t been back because the Apollo program ended.

      It’s well known that the the whole thing was faked, but NASA did send some guys to plant a flag and drive around on the moon just in case telescopes advanced – looks like it’s a good thing they covered their butts!

    Don’t you know that if the moon is ever developed with a bunch of us earthlings, and a neighborhood is formed up there with a neighborhood association, the first act will be to have those offensive flags taken down. I‘m surpirsed that one of these facist neighborhood associations hasn’t already thought of demanding the removal of the moon flags so as not offend the ragheads and communist that live in our country. Wake up you flag haters, six of them are flying proudly over your head everytime the moon comes out. Ain’t America GREAT!!!!!!!!

      hey, Obama may have to rev up NASA again to either remove the flags or plant one for each country on earth to make it more fair. After all, he wouldn’t want the U.S. to appear better than other countries or more successful in any way, right?

      That’s what I was thinking, several nations have sent up mapping missions, and this is the best we have. I have a friend with a 16″ reflector, and it seems to have almost this resolution.

      Yep, NASA managed to get tens of thousands of people to all lie coherently and not one of them ever spilled the beans.

      No I’m not trolling its just how I feel.
      we have better tech now then back in 1967 yet we didn’t go back.
      I know you want to say why go back, and I say do it for the other generation of people that would like to see it.

      We can’t survive going through the the van allen radiation belt, and if you think the uniforms used can keep the astronauts from getting ill think again.
      If the uniforms are that good then why don’t we use them to clean up Chernobyl?

      It was a space race and we did what we had to do to win even if it meant cheating and lying.
      the man landing on the moon was one of the biggest sham America has ever done up until we elected Obama.

      why haven’t we gone back?
      Hell, you think there would be a reality show on the moon staring the Kardashian.

      1.) The suits that the astronauts wore would not protect them from radiation. Look up Van Allen radiation belt. But nobody even got sick from radiation poisoning.
      2.) Look at the picture. How did they get the rover into that small LEM.
      3.) Multiple sources of light.,
      4.) Imagine docking the LEM with no windows at 1800 mph. The LEM was fragile.
      5.) Batteries weren’t good enough back then to do it.
      6.) I was running a computer for Marine Midland back in 1969. They were NOT what they are today. They took up whole rooms. I don’t think they had one on the LEM.
      7.) With todays technology they could post a picture with YOU holding onto that flag.

      Gives you something to think about.

      You are right. I think that this is one of the most important things to get out. Once people realize that they have been lied to about the Moon all these years they will have more sober expectations of our government, and for myself it caused me to read allot of history, where I came to find out that we have been lied to continually.. as governments have done throughout history.

      Which is what we could expect given the sinfull nature of man. But I was deluded to thinking that some how USA was above that..
