Does the White House Even Know What Really Happened During OBL Raid?

WASHINGTON (AP) — Killing Osama bin Laden was a big victory for the U.S., but how exactly the raid went down is another story – and another, and another.

Over two days, the White House has offered contradictory versions of events, including misidentifying which of bin Laden‘s sons was killed and wrongly saying bin Laden’s wife died in gunfire, as it tries to sort through what the president’s press secretary called the “fog of combat” and produce an accurate account.

Press Secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday that officials were trying to get information out as quickly as possible about the complex event witnessed by just a handful of people, and the story line was being corrected.

“We provided a great deal of information with great haste in order to inform you. … And obviously some of the information was, came in piece by piece and is being reviewed and updated and elaborated on,” Carney said.

The contradictions and misstatements reflect the fact that even in the case of a highly successful and popular mission, the confusion inherent in a fast-paced, unpredictable military raid conducted under intense pressure in a foreign country does not lend itself immediately to a tidy story line, some experts said.

“People are demanding the equivalent of a movie, they want to know scene by scene the most trivial details. You’re in the middle of a combat operation,” said Anthony Cordesman, a national security analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“One of the things we all have to be careful about is the idea that you can suddenly rush to transparency and understanding in a matter of minutes or hours on the first day of an event like this.”

The circumstances for the Navy SEALs involved hardly lent themselves to careful note-taking. One of their helicopters stalled even before they rushed bin Laden’s compound, entering different rooms from different angles, not knowing who they’d find and then, according to the White House, engaging in a firefight. Some of what happened during those 40 minutes in Abbottabad, Pakistan, may never be known.

Nevertheless, the contradictory statements seem certain to raise suspicions about the White House’s version of events, given that no independent account from another source is likely to emerge. The only non-U.S. witnesses to survive the raid are in Pakistani custody.

Some of the White House contradictions and corrections that have emerged so far:

-White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan told reporters Monday that bin Laden’s son Khalid was killed in the raid. When the White House released a transcript of Brennan’s briefing, the name had been corrected to that of another son, Hamza.

-Brennan said bin Laden’s wife died while shielding the terrorist leader from U.S. gunfire. Carney said Tuesday that the wife hadn’t died and was merely shot in the leg, although another woman did die. But it wasn’t clear that either of them was trying to shield bin Laden.

-Brennan and other officials suggested that bin Laden was holding a gun and even firing at U.S. forces. Carney said Tuesday that bin Laden was unarmed.

-Officials have offered varying accounts of how President Barack Obama and his team in the White House Situation Room were able to monitor the raid. Without providing details on the technology involved, Brennan said that “we were able to monitor in a real-time basis the progress of the operation from its commencement to its time on target to the extraction of the remains and to then the egress off of the target.”

CIA Director Leon Panetta told PBS on Tuesday that “Once those teams went into the compound, I can tell you that there was a time period of almost 20 or 25 minutes that we really didn’t know just exactly what was going on.”

-The night of the raid, administration officials held a telephone briefing for reporters. “During the raid, we lost one helicopter due to mechanical failure,” one of the administration officials said. Later in the same call, another official contradicted that: “We didn’t say it was mechanical.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, clarified Tuesday that the explanation was more technical: The air temperature in the compound was hotter than expected and the helicopter was too heavy to stay aloft under that condition.

    Anyone who has ever been a witness to any event will have their version of what happened. That is why two witnesses are needed for any particular court statement. Those who were there know what happened, those who watched it live feed… They have eyes but do not see.

    As for the WH knowing what happened, I doubt the WH could organize a two car funeral, given that the hearse comes first.

    Let me get this right……..1 mile from a Pakistani military base several helicopters fly in, engage in a forty minute gunfight, load up the helicopter and take off and the Pakistani’s never appeared on site.

    Brennan has been contradicted by facts more than once. Usually it is the Defense Department which provides factual briefings, with charts and video. This control-freak White House cannot bear to give credit where credit is due, much less admit the military has saved/propped up his ratings, at least for a few days. Credibility, once lost is almost impossible to regain. I personally have reached the point of disbelief in this administration to the point that it can never be believed to impart truth or a cohesive statement. As I track down data from numerous sources, it strikes me that what the administration really needs is a czar for continuity, like those who produce films use continuity editors. I am a “dot the i‘s and cross the T’s” sort of person as I prepare and all these loose ends drive me batty.

      I would extend that “20 to 25 minutes” to about 20 to 25 years, if not forever.

      The military acted brilliantly. Face it, they were sent in to kill Bin Laden.
      Mission accomplished (again).

      Then, the politicians and “advisors” take over and stumble all over themselves.
      Oh!!! They used a woman as a human shield–inaccurate. Bin Laden was armed–inaccurate.

      We went in and terminated our target. Case closed. That’s what we should be doing in Afghanistan. Target and remove.

      Obummer Most Fowl didn’t lie in his statement. He said OBL was killed in a military action, and he didn’t state the year. No lie there. Limbo said it was in ‘03 when he was fried in Tora Bora. Not confirmed since he was on a bike 10 minutes before the bunker buster struck.

      Actually, most people do believe that the navy seals could kill bin laden. Fortunately we know have a decent and intelligent president in charge. A friggin moron like reagan or either Bush would invade mulitple countries for no reason. Well almost no reason, they did it to make their friends wealthy…er. Obama on the other hand, went looking for one guy, found him in 6 months and hired the right people to deal with him. Bush = two wars and nothing to show for it. Obama = half a war, which wasn’t even really his idea, and the head of Bin Laden. Obama should be on Mt Rushmore or the 1 dollar bill.

      Bunch of clowns in the admin only ones I want to hear from are the operators who were there OR SHOW the video footage they watched and we all know was recorded from the raid. Noway there wasnt a helmet or gun mounted cam rolling during the raid. We can go on tons of sites and watch combat footage shot this way.

      IMO this contradiction is really throwing the military/ operators under the bus in anticipation of the negative response that is coming from radical mussies and nations.

      Would not surprise me if we eventually hear “well there was a kill order given but if they could get him alive we wanted him alive… the operators reacted hastily resulting in UBL’s death, he was unarmed”.

      Rushing to give out details to inform the public and missing a few details I can buy. But is it just me or did anyone else see that photo of all the big-wigs sitting in the situation room watching the raid take place via helmet cam worn by the SEALS? So where is the confusion in what actually went down? The more and more I hear about this the more fishy it sounds

      The US performed a military operation.
      The US killed a high ranking Al Qaeda member.

      The rushing you hear is the administration zooming toward using this to elevate it’s poll numbers.

      A great job on the mission (untouched by Obama) by the professionals.

      As far as handling the public release of mission details? Ever seen what monkeys do to a football?
