Does This Design of Two Towers Remind You of Anything?

South Korea Residential Building Design Looks Eerily Like The Collapsing Twin Towers

(Photo: Concept Image MVRDV)

These residential high-rise buildings to be completed in Seoul, South Korea, by 2015 are connected in the middle by a cloud, which the designer says “differentiates the building from other luxury developments.”

The towers designed by architects at MVRDV are 300 and 260 meters high with a “pixelated” cloud in the middle at the 27th floor. The cloud allows for more light and room for decks and greenspace.

South Korea Residential Building Design Looks Eerily Like The Collapsing Twin Towers

Inside the "cloud" (Photo: Concept Image MVRDV)

As peaceful as that sounds, there is something a bit disconcerting about the design. Here’s what Gizmodo has to say about what may look a little too much like the towers of the World Trade Center beginning to come down on 9/11:

From higher angles the ten story tall pixelated cloud structure that connects the two 850+ foot towers certainly looks more whimsical, as I’m sure the architects at MVRDV intended it to be. But most people will be viewing it looking up from ground level. And I‘m afraid from that angle it’s very reminiscent of the images and events that were seen around the entire world that day. So I‘m not really sure how the eerie similarities weren’t spotted before this design was approved.

What do you think of the concept?

Update: Since the posting of this story, MVRDV has issued a statement of apology (be sure to click “read” on the site to see the statement) over the design. The design company writes “MVRDV regrets deeply any connotations The Cloud projects evokes regarding 9/11. The Cloud was designed based on parameters such as sunlight, outside spaces, living quality for inhabitants and the city.  It is one of many projects in which MVRDV experiments with a raised city level to reinvent the often solitary typology of the skyscraper. It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks nor did we see the resemblance during the design process. We sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings we have hurt, it was not our intention.”

The Weekly Standard (via Drudge Report) reports that even though the design firm said evoking 9/11 “was not our intention”, it may have been thought about more than it is being let on. Written in Dutch in the newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, the Weekly Standard reports Jan Knikker of MVRDV saying “I have to admit that we also thought of the 9/11 attacks.” The Weekly Standard also points out that the design for these residential buildings was created by Daniel Libeskind, who designed the original “master plan” for the reconstruction of Ground Zero.

There are hundreds of buildings in the shape of a cross – they’re called Cathedrals. What I’m saying and which the respondents here seem to fail to understand is that there is no way that this building is intended to have any resemblance or connection to the events at the twin towers, and to suggest otherwise – Becca Leigh please note – is sick and inconsiderate. By the way Becca baby, you’re the saddo who only goes to sites where they see stories they can agree with! Never heard of discussion? Never heard of opinion? I seen designs using the “pixeling” from before 9/11, if these building didnt have it we would say wow they look like the twin towers. They added the pixeling and we say wow they look like the twin towers collapsing…. So if they just copied the towers would we be honored? Then they added to it an idea that they have been wanting to do for 20years and we become offended. Hey whatever floats your boat, boost to the world that you are weak, that you live in the past and that you will whine “boowhoo boowhoo.” I think it looks exactly like the twin towers collapsing, and I would love to live in that cloud, it’s just a building and we are better then this.

This is going to go up in SOUTH Korea you imbeciles! S. Korea is our ally and I believe will always be our ally. Remember, they were the ones we actually saved from communist N. Korea. They have a history of building up as their land mass is small. Also, it is not unheard of to build towers that connect in the middle. IF this were intended to look like the WTC on 9-11 they would have made one “cloud” higher than the other and set it on fire. This is obviously not the case. So stop all of your neocon crying and whining when our ally half a world away has an architect that wants to build something really cool because it might remind you of an event that happened in a place you’ve most likely never been. Jack of hearts They are allowed to build whatever they like, it is their country anyways. On the other hand I used to have a confederate sticker in the window of my car because my family hails from the south (note the north practiced slavery to but we still fly the US flag with pride) But when my black neighbors moved in I removed it. Not because I believe the confederate flag stands for racism but out of respect for them and what it might mean to them. They expect protection from us and call themselves our friends. The imagery of these buildings can not be ignored and out of respect to the friendship between both nations I hope they reconsider. By the way I enjoy a wonderful friendship with my neighbor and I don’t believe he would have ever even knocked on my door had I left that sticker on my window. You can do anything you want in this life but you must have foresight and weigh the pros and cons of each decision you make.

<<<— Uber conservative chick here. Love the discussions on The Blaze, but for the second time this fall, find myself apparently out of sync with the regulars. This design type has been in the making for decades. I lived in a part of North Dallas that had some Asian design firms come over to study the soil shift properties in the late '80's. I got to know some of the guys, and saw concepts like this they were working on at the time. Their engineering was solid on a light scale, but they were in a quandary about the materials that would be supple enough to withstand a quake, yet strong enough to hold the counter-weight for ages to come. They also were looking at footer and weight bearing models in shifting substrate. That is why the two towers, by the way – they share the weight and relieve the load for each other.

I remember 9-11 and honour all that died there, helped there, and watched helplessly as needless death and destruction rained down. But this has nothing to do with 9-11 and has been in the works for a very long time. Personally, I liked the idea then, and I like it now.

Building structures have changed since the 1400's if anyone has noticed. We have had many types of construction styles and will have many more to come if we can survive ourselves. Commercial construction and design are moving more towards the organic. This is not the most futuristic organic building I have seen come out of the design halls. Get a grip, folks. Not everything is about us.

Personally I think the design is tacky, despite the similarities. I do have to question the architects motives with his design. How could he possibly have ignored that? Did he really think people wouldn’t immediately think of 9/11? Its like a knee-jerk reaction.

Sure, I know what the building is, what its meant for. But for people posting stuff like “aannndd, what’s the problem?” … would you live or work in a building that was built to look like a swastika? Or a building that depicted Hiroshima getting blown off the map?

Regardless of your answer, I still think its flat out tacky. But that’s just my 2 cents.

I’ve lived in South Korea a couple of times for a total of 5 years, worked in South Korea for Samsung, have been married to a Korean woman for 15 years, and am fluent in Korean. I’m about 99% sure, knowing what I know of Koreans, that this was not intentionally made to represent 9/11. The culture takes death very seriously and doesn’t make light of it. I’m not saying this out of bias since I have more of a love/hate relationship (more on the hate side as of late) with Korea, and I especially hated the toxic, overly aggressive business culture there. If this were North Korea or China, then I’d be 99% sure it’s a representation of 9/11. The only people hateful enough in South Korea to make an intentional representation of 9/11 are the leftists: violent protesters and union thugs that are the puppets of the North. However, unlike America, the South Korean left have not taken significant hold over executive positions in corporations, so the building contractor and architect firm were not likely doing this intentionally.

The percentage of Muslims in South Korea is estimated at about .1% There is NO WAY this is in any way related to Islam.

Aside from that, the fact that you still think 9/11 is representative of all of Islam shows how ignorant you are.

Aside from THAT, the fact that you believe the entire world shares the America perspective on life is telling of your global ignorance. Things that “resemble” icons in American culture are not symbolic of those same things in every other country. In other words, you see the Twin Towers because that image is engrained in your mind. South Korea does not see that because, like the majority of the world that wasn’t directly affected by it, they have moved on. Thus, they see two buildings reaching beyond the clouds.

You all act like little school kids that they think everyone is talking about them. The entire world does not revolve around YOU or America.

      Get over yourself.

“My” issue is, why has so much time passed, that we don’t already have the twin towers back up taller and stronger than what they were. I also feel that this design, in this location, is in very poor taste. It “does” look like the twin towers are exploding. Just like on that horrific day. I can‘t believe that this was even a thought in someone’s mind, and in their mind, this design was ok. I see that they did apologize, but I do hope they do not go through with it at that location. Even if the intention was benign..I‘d say it’s safe to say that subliminally the designer had the twin towers in his mind when he designed it. I’m not expecting Koreans to have the same degree of solemnity for the twin towers and the 3000 that died in them as Americans have…but knowing that Kim Jong Il is right next door and your best friend is the U.S….perhaps they should rethink this one?

Put down the crack pipe guys, Glen included. Anyone who’s ever spent any time in S. Korea would know they would not build something to mock our misery. They are one of the few nations, if not the only nation that wholeheartedly loves America for what she did to save them from enslavement. I‘m glad this didn’t happen while my father was still alive, since he put his @$$ on the line during the active war in Korea. Pulling bases out would be a huge loss for our military and probably mean an all-out war for our good ally. Since Obama has done all he could to destroy our relationships with the few really good allies we had, we should beat him to the punch and pull out of our last large military bases in Asia? Why not pull out of Europe too so the Russians can invade it while China takes over Asia? While we’re at it, why not nuke Canada?

Just by looking at the photo, and from the years I spent in Korea, I‘ll say this attack on their artistic design has to be the all out stupidest thing I’ve ever seen on The Blaze. If they wanted it to look like the towers under attack, it would look like the towers under attack, not a vague kind of sort of maybe if at the right angle and light, uh, STUPID!!!

While I love Glen Beck, there‘s a reason he isn’t and never will be president. And if we’re stupid enough as a nation to again elect a president who claims he will immediately pull all the troops out of anywhere, before he has all the facts known only to the president, then I

You know, I think it IS a beautiful design… except if you read the bottom paragraph you see that the master mind behind the ground zero designs was involved, and someone else FROM THE COMPANY WHO DESIGNED IT admitted that they thought about 9/11. I‘m not one to see things that aren’t there, but those two facts along with the design make me at best skeptical that they didn’t know what it would look like, and at worst flabbergasted that an ally of ours would allow such an obvious slap in the face.

      The world is mocking us!

Forget that we have pulled the worlds ass from the meat grinder at least twice in the last century. Forget the contemporary Marshal Plans we STILL fund. Forget the technology transfers. Forget bringing the worlds engineers to the US to ‘educate’ them. Forget the ‘charity’ America has given the world as a result of our productivity. Forget the engineering marvels we have provided to the world that provide water, food, energy, transportation, exploration, education, tools, automation and HOPE.

The world holds us in C-O-N-T-E-M-P-T! for our generosity and our aid. If you can’t see this you are too stupid to be part of the modern world and education eludes you.

America is under attack from every direction. Enemies, foreign AND domestic.

God love Glenn Beck. But he is NOT a fighter. He is a roll over and hope for the best conservative. He is a path of least resistance hopeful, A Lowest Common Denominator changes the world hopeful.

But, he is WRONG. The lowest common denominator has NEVER, won. Not once. Ever in history. Not ever. Not even Jesus Christ, my personal savior, has saved the world, yet.

Hope, springs eternal. Desire and lust for our future also abound. But reality and hope are two completely different things. Separate in every aspect of their interpretation and definition.

America is under attack from every direction. Get ready.

I’m seeing a lot of offense taken on both sides here. And the offense on both sides is nothing short of STUPID. There’s NOTHING ANYWHERE that says we are to be protected from offense.

Yes the building looks like the Twin Towers immediately after 9/11. Get over it. I don’t like the idea; I’m offended that someone would design a building that looks like that. BUT: The argument that it shouldn’t be built because it offends us is as bad as the Athiests who claim the Nativity scenes offend them, so we shouldn’t have them.

The ONLY reasons the building shouldn‘t be built is if the South Korean people don’t want it; it would cost more than the budget allotted to the building; it’s structurally unsound. If these reasons aren’t met, then they should build the building, and we should SHUT UP about it!

Remember: There is NOTHING that says we are protected from being offended. I am offended that the Atheists want to put up a banner with the nativity scene in California saying “Religion is a Myth”. That is their right. (BTW, atheism IS a religion…)

Those of you who are offended that they might build this building, GET OVER IT. Those of you who are offended at those who are offended, GET OVER IT.

I am sure this designer didn’t sit down and go alright lets build a building in South Korea just for the soul purpose of ******* off middle class Americans.

Rose-Ellen, You can argue till you’re blue in the face about whatever harm the US does abroad, but no country in the world has spilled more of its own blood for foreign nations than the United States of America. Furthermore, while the possibility exists that the Russians COULD have won the war on their own, they contributed neither air nor sea power to the fight. The fight in the air in particular was crucial to Russia’s fight on the Eastern Front, as it deprived the Nazis of their line of supplies and fuel. Russia would have been much worse off and spent years, perhaps even decades longer fighting if not for the intervention of the USA. If you’d like to contend that it was a joint effort, that’s acceptable if contestable, but to call the Soviets the principle force in the defeat of Nazi Germany, I think, is a bit rich.

Continued: Contest recent history all you want, but the Revolutionary War was bloody, and every drop spilled by patriotic colonials was in the name of our freedom. And if you think for a second that those Allied soldiers that fell in WWII didn’t die protecting freedom (regardless of who you think ultimately did more to win it), then you’re sorely mistaken. My family has a solid military history, and I’m a proud member of the United States Air Force. I’m not generally called upon to fight, but I have friends and family who are, and for you to sully the sacrifice that has been and is still being made by our men and women in uniform with such vitriol… well you might as well be spitting on the graves of the dead and in the eyes of the living. That might be okay to you, but remember, my family – countless American families – paid in blood for the right you have to spout that kind of nonsense. I humbly recommend you not take it for granted, it doesn’t exist everywhere.

      @PessimisticallyOptimistic

Pearl Harbor survivors get over it already. There, I did it. Pearl Harbor was a legitimate target, unlike the residential areas in Japan, which were hit with firebombs with the goal of killing as many women and children as possible. That’s a simple fact. And after the war was over, your “brave” American GIs raped thousands of Japanese women. That, too, is a fact. The Aussies have owned up to it, but America is still covering it up.

So what if there was no declaration of war from Japan? Those niceties are stupid and unreasonable. Get the heck over it already America. It’s been 70 years, how long will you continue to whine about being caught with your pants down because the entire country turned two blind eyes towards the development in imperial Japan?

Anyone paying attention to what happend in Japan would have seen this coming for years. That is a simple fact, but most American “historians” ignore it, because the dolts can‘t read Japanese and thus can’t use the Japanese sources. Take an elementary school book from Japan in, let’s say, 1937, and you find plenty of propaganda against the west (most notably the “ABCD encirclement”, which was “strangling” Japan, ABCD stands for America, Britain, China and the Netherlands.) The road to war was already there, but the Americans were too ignorant to see it, yet they still whine about it.

      Stupid.

I was stationed in South Korea from 1998 to 1999 Camp Hovey in Tongdachon next to Camp Casey Area 1. When I was there we had a base lockdown twice because of college protests of American Supposed Occupation.!would not put it past a younger architect in South Korea designing a building to achieve the level of angst it is receiving. Just like our young generations dont appreciate what our Patriarchs left for us the same in South Korea. They have no connection why we are there in the first place. I agree with another commenter, if any country wants to thumb their finger in our eye and hit us where it hurts we should hit them where it hurts in the pocket through Foreign Aid and trade. The older generation needs in this country and over there remind them who and what America is and is to be respected. Alot of the younger generation does not like us, the older generation much of them do like us. My only gripe I had when I was there was the amount of sex trafficking involved from girls from the Phillipines, Russia etc.. brought into American base towns to entertain our troops. Thats a whole other subject that needs to be addressed. All in Korea. Sexual Slavery and human trafficking are huge there involving young girls from other Asian countries coming to South Korea looking for a better way only to find themselves working in a bar with minimum wage that cant pay the bar owner off for their passage all the while pushing GI’s into buying drinks and ultimately favors. @Lotspot4. I spend a lot of time in Asia and have a home in Shanghai. Islam is growing in S Korea and a caliphate has had it’s presence there since the 7th century. I wouldn’t be surprised if their is a connection to 911 in this design. Heck, the government even built a mosque in Seoul. However, as an engineer, I think the design from a structural point of view is brilliant not only in it’s simplicity, but it’s cost. The most complicated architectural structure from an engineer’s perspective is The Capital Gate Tower Abu Dhabi:

Think about it you needed two builingd to do it. As for the placement of it if you put it at the bottom it would look foolish and not visible from miles away(you make a building like this so people can see it) if you put it up on the top I would think it would cost millions of dollars more to build plus it would most likely not be as stable.

I agree. It doesn’t really look like 9/11. The cloud is at the middle and encompasses both buildings. From a distance, it really looks like a cloud. Only from this angle of being between and below the buildings does it resemble a cloud of smoke. I’m willing to chalk it up to an unfortunate coincidence and I imagine it will be less obvious in real life than in this rendering, which softens the contrast of light and shadow to make it look more cloud like.

Love your humor from your fertile-mind and did recall the theory about BUSH DID IT and it does remind me of this joke:
The guy who bought a brand-new, loaded 4×4, FORD truck (doesn’t use fossil-fuel energy outlet to KICK BUTT up a logging-road mountain trail) and he would look at his prize-possession and say, MAN, I LOVE YOU. This same guy loved his three-legged dog, Lucky (he often would tell his friends, Lucky is my arithmetic dog…..he puts down 3 and carries one), (I am a dog and cat lover so don’t attack me about the number). The guy and his dog, like most dog- owners, loved to play fetch…throw something and Lucky would bring back the something about 911 to 1 time, so the guy kept practicing fetch with his beloved dog, Lucky. One day the guy was going to use dynamite to clear an area on his remote 50 acres and Lucky grabbed the stick (dynamite) in his mouth (hey daddy, catch me if you can) and ran and stopped and dropped the stick (dynamite) and stared. The guy threw AN ACTUAL STICK to get Lucky away from the other stick (dynamite)..Lucky picks up his own stick and runs under-neath the guy’s prized truck. Much later the guy made millions of dollars making a movie, “Do all dogs go to heaven?”
Please don’t attack me…I love dogs and cats.
