Does This New Budweiser Beer Ad Feature a Gay Soldier?

Before I write anything, watch the following new commercial from Budweiser:
Now, did you get a “gay vibe” from that? That’s the controversy brewing over the ad after the gay website AfterElton.com suggested, in those words, that it’s possible. Here’s how blogger Michael Jensen explains it:
So the first person our soldier calls is this other guy. Let’s call him PB for Potential Boyfriend. Clearly the solider isn’t married or in a serious relationship with the girl we later see him hugging. Otherwise he surely would’ve called her first. So the possibilities are that either that PB is a best friend or … a boyfriend. Hmm, would a soldier coming home really call his best friend before his parents?
If PB is his brother, the brother clearly doesn’t live at home as we see the solider also call his parents, while PB is driving away from his house to start getting the party ready. And PB sure seems to be much of the focus of the commercial as he prepares for the party. And then who is the first person to greet and hug our soldier? It’s PB of course. And it’s a fairly intense hug.
Another gay blog, Towleroad.com, calls the ad “ambiguously gay” and includes the pun, “Budweiser’s latest is asking, but not telling.”
And that seems to be the consensus in the blogosphere.
Still, Jensen concedes that it’s possible the coziness of the two men is inadvertent. But considering that a large company such as Budweiser has a large marketing arm, he says, that’s unlikely.
A homosexual-themed ad from Budweiser wouldn’t be out of the ordinary considering the beer company has done it in the past. In 1999 Bud Light ran an ad in a gay magazine featuring two men holding hands and the line, “Be yourself and make it a Bud Light.”
At the time, Rev. Jerry Falwell spearheaded a campaign to flood the company with complaints.
What do you think?

When I came home from my 1st deployment I called my brother 1st who is older and the so called PB looks older, I also told my brother if he was going to have a party to invite a bunch of girls I could exagerate war stories too for potential late night activities, I called my parents second then I called some of my buddies, I guess since I was not married and I did not call any women (besides my mom) I was wearing a rainbow shirt under my uniform and a full on homosexual?

Posted on April 26, 2011 at 3:45pmAs a military wife, I showed this to my husband (who is against the repeal of Don‘t Ask Don’t Tell), and we both found this to be non-homosexual. I think people truly are reading too far into this commercial, and it came out during an iffy time (considering the repeal). It appears to be his brother, or at the most his best friend/college roommate/etc. While in the military, I know a lot of men who have strong relationships with their brothers, so it seems as though he was merely heading straight for family.

Posted on April 26, 2011 at 3:45pmSure seems Gay to me. The ad starts with a “Gay Vibe” with tears following the phone call and then you kind of think that maybe he‘s just emotional telling friends that he’s coming home. But when the first person to meet him at the barn door is “The guy” followed by his sister and then his mother it seals the deal. Definitely a strong lean if not an outward statement following the elimination of “Don‘t Ask Don’t Tell”.

Posted on April 26, 2011 at 3:45pmHmm – first time I saw it, I thought figured “brother”, and thought it was a great ad. Look for boogie-men (or booger bears?), and you’ll certainly find them. I‘d hate to think that a guy can’t hug is brother whom he hasn’t seen for a long time and instantly thought to be gay.

Posted on April 26, 2011 at 4:03pmIt looks like a nineteen something soldier with a 25y/o brother who probably also served. The acting might be bad, and one of them might actually be gay, but the commercial is as straight as a arrow.
An aside. I don’t think that gay people are right in what they do or how they choose to live their lives, but it is beyond me to tell another human being how to live and what to do. That is the Libertarian in me. The only exception that I make to that rule is when a child is being physically or mentally tortured by the acts of the parents. The problem isn’t who people sleep with, but it is about what people believe in. For me, what I believe in is freedom and liberty. You seem to masquarade as a person who believes the same, but you are just another control freak like alot of people. You are a social conservative who wants government, or lacking that, the church to tell people what they can and can’t do. That is the kind of thing that drives the gays who might otherwise be republican or libertarian to the other party.

Posted on April 26, 2011 at 8:19pmEveryone that saw this and thought “gay” are just blatantly retarded.
Let’s look at it from my perspective, and the perspective of other soldiers that I am friends with. What is a man who’s been deprived of the finer things in life, who is old enough to drink beer, going to be thinking about going home to? PARTYYYY! I could name a laundry list of the guys I was deployed with that they’re first thoughts were to go home and get wasted with their friends. Yes, they’d call their best friend, they’re boy. The guy was single, so he called his best friend to let him know it‘s party time because I’m on my way home. It’s not gay at all. Hell, I’ve had guys in my unit organize with fellow soldiers to not even go home but to go to Germany on R&R to party and get wasted. Were they gay? Come on!
I never even called my parents when i went home on R&R the first time until I was already home recovering from a hang over. Some people are close to their parents, others are not. This guy was close enough to at least call them second but apparently not close enough to call them first.
Plus the outrageous assumption that this man couldn’t be his brother because he called the parents separately. Did this guy look like he was under 18? Come on, why would he be living at home? Perhaps he was at college. He looks old enough to be out of college honestly. Do all siblings live at home, even as grown adults still? Ridiculous!
Interesting hug? I‘ve got some close friends that I’ve been in COMBAT with. Yea, I give em all hugs. There‘s no handshakes with a man that I’ve almost died with. There’s no handshake with a man that watched my back for a 12 month deployment. There’s no simple high five-ing them! Who knows, this guy could have been his old Sergeant from a previous deployment that saved this guys life. It could be his best friend that he knew since Kindergarten.
To pull homosexuality out of this is appalling. I’m not even against homosexuality. They are as free as you and I to pursuit their version of happiness and the American dream. But this was a friggin’ stretch!

Posted on April 27, 2011 at 8:00amI’m not sure if this could be considered yellow journalism, but it’s definitely a skewed opinion. I got the vibe that it was the soldier’s older brothe, and he was fixing up the family barn, excited to see his little brother come home safe. I did see a woman hug him too. Maybe an aunt and the kid were going to have incestual sex? Maybe it was about incest? OR, they did end up in the BARN, where the keep the animals-maybe it was about beastiality? And the BEER BOTTLE is definitely a phallic symbol. Maybe they were all there for a beer enema party? Is this entry an attempt at humor or is the over-gay-porned blog writer just a perv looking to sex-up the blog a little?

Posted on April 27, 2011 at 8:23amIt‘s commerical of a brother coming home from the war I don’t know which one being that there’s three plus wars going on. And the fact that ****‘s believe it’s about a gay soldier shows how delusional they are and how badly they want their mental illness to be normal.

Posted on April 27, 2011 at 8:32amThat’s really digging and forcing an agenda, isn’t it? I had friends who were gay, and I’m not homophobic. Love the sinner, hate the sin. I got he called his older brother, then his family. The girl he hugged was probably his sister. Maybe older brother had already done a tour and knew where he was coming from, therefore the SLIGHTLY more intense hug. He didn’t go to a “boyfriend’s” house first, he went home, then out to the barn. And come on, seperate phones? Of course! in the age of the cell phone? He called his brother’s cell phone first, then the house phone. These people will make anything support their cause.
