Does This ‘United States of Awesome Possibilities’ Ad Campaign Offend You?

How do you feel about Congress getting involved in a U.S. tourism campaign?

How do you feel about the campaign actively seeking to “rebrand” the U.S. because those in charge of the effort believe the country is considered too “unwelcoming,” “arrogant” and “brash”?

That’s precisely what Brand USA (formerly the Corporation for Travel Promotion, or CTP), created by Congress in 2010, is doing with what is reportedly the “first worldwide marketing campaign to promote the United States,” reports The New York Times.

The United States made $134.4 billion from international tourism in 2010, with a record 60 million tourists, according to figures from the U.S. Commerce Department. Knowing that tourism counts for 2.8 percent of gross domestic product and 7.52 million jobs, according to the New York Daily News, Washington sees the industry as a relatively fast and easy way to inject some money into the economy.

Know what the tagline is? “The United States of Awesome Possibilities.”

No joke.

Does This United States of Awesome Possibilities Ad Campaign Offend You?The budget for the campaign, estimated at up to $200 million, will reportedly come from sources “other than taxpayer dollars,” funded through a combination of private sector investments and funds collected by the Department of Homeland Security from international visitors who visit the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, reports International Business Times.

“It is not about patriotism, flag-waving or chest-beating,” said the corporation in a capsule explanation of the design, according to the Daily News. “It is meant to be welcoming, unexpected and inclusive.”

A good deal of the strategy behind the campaign is based on the fact that “the United States is facing heightened criticism around the world,” reports Advertising Age.

Recent Pew studies show America’s image has declined in Latin America and Europe, as well as places like the Middle East where there’s increased anti-American sentiment, reports My Fox Tampa.

“We’re rebranding America for the first time,” said Jim Evans, chief executive of the Corporation for Travel Promotion, according to the New York Daily News. “Over the last 10 or 12 years, people have seen America as unwelcoming as we’ve focused on security . . . and our competition (from other countries) is more fierce than it’s ever been before.”

According to Zachary Roth of The Lookout, the Brand USA campaign website offers foreign travelers some useful tips about American life and culture including:

  • “Health care is superior in the U.S. but it can be very expensive because there is no universal health care.”
  • “. . . some banking networks charge fees of $1-2 per transaction,” for ATM withdrawals.
  • “Be aware that Americans are fanatics about showering and hygiene.”

“We have to rekindle the romance with the United States,” said Chris Perkins, according to AFP.

“It pains me, as a proud American, but we’re viewed as arrogant and brash, and we’ve never been out there saying: ‘Please come.’”

Does This United States of Awesome Possibilities Ad Campaign Offend You?Could’ve fooled me.

So we need to turn cartwheels because the MEDIA, domestic and foreign, has given us a bad image? It’s a media image war. I have nothing against those who create the false image trying to correct it– as long as they don’t try to make me feel guilty about what damage they have done. I have lived overseas both to the East and to the West, and have only seen media-produced-somehow-politically-useful anti-Americanism. I spent my November 11 at a commemoration service and town hall meeting in a European town hard hit by both World Wars… no anti-Americanism for miles and miles around– indeed, quite the contrary.

The “Visa Waiver Program” is basically a simplified electronic visa program. I am sure that the tourists who bought their “visa waivers” would love to know how the money is being spent….

Comedy of errors! Money for nothing! Foreign power will continue to use foreign media to spew anti-Americanism for political purposes. The American left and the MSM does the same! Most people know enough to want to see for themselves.

I really does look like they are saying that! What gets me is that the overall hostility that we are feeling from people around the world now is primarily because of obama and his thugs. While there was a lot of people around the world that didn’t like us or was jealous of us or whatever, it has gotten a lot worse with obama. I would have to say that what I see to explain that is that unlike the OWS nerds, the people in the rest of the world KNOWS that the economic problems and such that we have now are a direct result of obama’s bailouts to his “special friends” and attempts to bring America down is affecting the whole world and the whole world knows that. The last thing that they should do is use money to try and trick people into coming here and they make it even more inviting by having them get groped and molested when they get here, yep that would really make me want to come and bring my wife and children to get molested. If the people of the world were to actually stand up and demand that the US fixes the economy and a lot of the “ailments” of the world, the first thing they would do is DEMAND the removal of obama and his thugs from the White House and for us to get rid of the laws that are allowing and protecting the union leaders that hurt maim kill people from any prosecution. This is what the people around the world would demand!

They are trying to get tourism turned back on, after “Homeland Security” basically nuked it. (It’s difficult to get a tourist visa to come here.. Very difficult.)

Florida has lost millions in revenue, and tourist dollars are their biggest industry. Scare away the Europeans, and you lose. Scare away the Asians, and you lose.

They still have the Canadians… Only problem for those in food service: They seem to assume the tip is part of the basic charge for the food..

What bologna! The Federal Government imports tens of thousands of “immigrants”, mostly from islamic nations and mostly people using “refugee” status or “asylum” as their cloak, some from other nations, but by far and away muslims out number anyone else.

They are PROVIDED, along with their airfare, a SSAN, a Drivers License, a topped off bank card and money for an extended period, housing and other benefits that may include an interpreter, liaison, concierge, or community guide, vehicle, food, utilities and various and sundry other aid. All at tax payer expense.

This commercial or ‘ad’ is, as so many are intended to be these days, a disgrace and an insult to Americans.

No Federal Agency should be involved in the private sector. America has never fully embodied the principles the Founding Fathers stood for. Jefferson lamented that the constitution did not go far enough to safeguard the liberty of the people against the growing power of Banks and Corporations. He also believed that the Supreme Court would be used to “reinterpret” the Constitution and erode the liberty of the people. Jefferson believed that because of these things, another revolution was inevitable.

I don’t want to the Constitution of 1776, which only allowed wealthy, white, landowners to vote and permitted slavery. I do want to restore the PRINCIPLES: Freedom, Equality Under the Law, Separation of Powers, Democratic Elections, Representative Government, and Inalienable HUMAN rights.

In Tourism you are selling an IMAGE. The goal is to create an IMAGE that others are willing to buy. Pepsi and Apple sold themselves as “hip” and “cool” to attract younger buyers. Banks portray themselves as “solid” and “established” to attract those looking for a safe place to stash their money. Right now America has a negative IMAGE worldwide–brash, arrogant, and self-absorbed.

Regardless of whether you agree with their perception of the USA, this negative IMAGE harms tourism. If we want people to come here, open their wallets, and spend their money we need to create an IMAGE that appeals to them. How far we go to be appealing will depend on how much we want their MONEY.

This is an ECONOMIC decision, not a POLITICAL one.

The negative image of America stems mostly from 19% of our nation (liberals) hating their own country and spreading their negative views of America to other idiot liberals/socialists around the world. I don’t hate America. I despise what our political system has become. I hate the fact that it has abandoned the free market for Crony Socialism. I hate the fact that we engage in foreign wars and “nation building” that our Founding Fathers told us to stay out of.

The nations of the world have every reason to be critical. We have violated our most basic principles, abandoned our morals, and THEN have the gall to tell everyone else how to live their lives. When we (as a nation) behave so hypocritically, Is it any wonder we have a negative image worldwide?
