‘Doesn’t Deserve to Win’: Krauthammer Slams Mitt Romney’s Strategy

It‘s no secret by now that the week following the Supreme Court’s decision on Obamacare has not been GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s best. And infuriatingly enough, it is precisely the week that should have been Romney’s best, given that the decision itself mobilized his base in a way that it hasn’t been mobilized pretty much since the general election began, a fact which has been compounded by the President’s recent job numbers. Yet Romney’s messaging on Obamacare has been confused at best, and his arguments regarding the job numbers have shown a stunning inability to gain traction.
This failure on Romney’s part has left even pundits who are ideologically in his corner confused and worried, as a Fox News panel today showed when conservative luminary Charles Krauthammer said frankly that if Romney couldn’t use moments like this to his advantage, he would not only lose the election, but deserve to lose it.
“Romney’s inability to bring home the argument,” Krauthammer sighed, “is simply incomprehensible. If he can’t make the argument, he doesn’t deserve to win the election.”
The root of Romney’s problem, according to Krauthammer, is a failure to make the correct ideological arguments while also failing to connect current economic misery to President Obama. This latter problem is especially harsh, given that the President is doing his utmost to draw a line, however flimsy, between Romney’s past with Bain Capital and the woes of average voters today. In stark contrast, as host John Roberts noted, Bill Clinton was able to unseat a sitting President on a narrow economic message even at a time when the economy was getting better precisely because Clinton was so charismatic.
Of course, Romney can be accused of many things, but charisma is not one of them. Which may explain why Krauthammer’s co-panelist Steve Hayes made the argument that Romney’s essentially myopic focus on the economy is hurting him, since voters have already worked out that the President is bad for the economy, and may be looking for stronger, more values-based arguments to motivate them. Neither Krauthammer nor Roberts nor Roll Call’s David Drucker (the third panelist) necessarily differed with this claim, though Drucker noted that criticism of Romney may be premature, given that his campaign has yet to really get on the rails after the primary.
Nevertheless, this obvious display of a lack of confidence in the ability of a major party’s nominee to persuade voters should trouble the Romney camp, especially given similar comments by conservative pundit Bill Kristol:
The economy is of course important. But voters want to hear what Romney is going to do about the economy. He can “speak about” how bad the economy is all he wants—though Americans are already well aware of the economy’s problems—but doesn’t the content of what Romney has to say matter? What is his economic growth agenda? His deficit reform agenda? His health care reform agenda? His tax reform agenda? His replacement for Dodd-Frank? No need for any of that, I suppose the Romney campaign believes. Just need to keep on “speaking about the economy.”
The Romney campaign will answer that they’re imitating Bill Clinton in 1992, who famously focused on “the economy, stupid.” But Bill Clinton was a full spectrum presidential candidate, with detailed policy proposals on welfare reform, health care, education, and foreign policy. He also made real efforts to convince the voters he was different from the losing Democratic candidates who preceded him (”a new kind of Democrat,“ ”ending welfare as we know it,” a hawkish-sounding foreign policy, Sister Souljah, etc.). So far, the Romney campaign doesn’t resemble the Clinton campaign. It seems to be following more comfortably in the tradition of the five post-Cold War Republican presidential candidates who preceded Romney. They received 37.5 percent, 40.7 percent, 47.9 percent, 50.7 percent, and 45.7 percent of the vote, respectively. The average GOP presidential vote in these last five elections was 44.5 percent. In the last three, it was 48.1 percent. Give Romney an extra point for voter disillusionment with Obama, and a half-point for being better financed than his predecessors. It still strikes me as a path to (narrow) defeat.
Kristol and Krauthammer both slamming Romney at once this way are a solid warning sign, and one that Romney cannot afford to ignore if he wants to end the reign of Barack Obama.

You need to promise people “free stuff”, Romney needs to have and actual plan on how to turn the economy around and get American’s back to work.
Mr.Romney doesn’t seem to have a plan, or maybe he’s just keeping it a secret.

Posted on July 7, 2012 at 3:03amI don’t want the man to have some big agenda. Isn‘t that why we’re in all this mess in the first place? Mitt could run on the idea of being an overpaid gov worker that does absolutely nothing but eat jelly beans and repeal things and he would be my hero. Just do nothing but unwind all this garbage. I want a lazy POTUS for a change. Zero except eating candy and repealing. Any one can do that much and they’d get my vote too. Pass zero laws for the next four years so we can all catch a breath. It’s like an addiction to these idiots. This whole “look what I can do” bit is getting nauseating. If they’ve proven anything, it‘s that they don’t exactly have the midas touch. What makes you think he can win? Paul supporters are not going to vote for him, if for nothing else, the way the RNC / State GOP committed felonies during the primary against Paul supporters.
He cannot even excite his own base, what makes you think the Independents are going to? They are mostly Paul supporters anyway. You guys have a hard time with reality.
Paul would win by a landslide, as he would bring all those factions to the table, along with the youth that support him. Research.

You are totally correct. Reagan also used to be president of the actors union and a Democrat before he became Governor. My father, a staunch Republican, originally didn’t like the idea of an “actor” running for President, until he read his memos and heard his speeches…
I’ll tell you, I may not be that old (35), but I’m old enough to the know the difference between what life was like in a good age (at least mine, Reagan) without the internet telling our young folk (Alex Jones) what they should believe…

CIRCLED… Paul and his supporters are being attacked? Except for myself (and I have no problem admitting it), not many on The Blaze from what I’ve read for months and months “attack” Ron Paul or his supporters out of thin air just to “attack” Ron Paul and his supporters.
It is the Ron Paul insurgent faction here (and all over the internet) and Ron Paul himself who are usually on the “attack” and insulting America, most of her allies, the GOP, Republicans, well-rounded Conservatives, anyone and everyone who has not, or would not vote for Ron Paul… not to mention any the candidates they may have supported throughout the nomination process.
So for Paul supporters to whine (like Ron Paul) about the various injustices committed in regards to him, his campaign or anything Ron Paul… take a step back and look no farther than Ron Paul and yourselves for that “blowback.”

Technology is allowing the everyday person to get information which was never available to them 10-20 years ago. Glenn Beck has talked more about the progressives on both the right and the left than anyone else out there, and he reaches millions of people. The world is waking up to the truth. Old guard Republicans and Democrats hate him because he and his guests expose their dark sides and creative word uses. Progressivism was sold to us as a modern better way of life, rather than what it truly is … big government control and martial law.
The good news is there’s a new generation of conservatives and libertarians who are rising to the top in leadership positions, so I have faith this country will get turned back around. It took the communists over 50 years to get us where we are today, but with hard work we can stop the monstrosity they created. Living under the weight of a big government is not what any American wants, so those who think they like it don’t know a better way of life … YET.
Have faith, JustAngry, we can do this.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If all the registered R’s, along with 2/3 of the I’s and others would vote for Paul he would beat Obama. That is pretty much the same formula that Governor Romney will need to win. The registered R’s are going to vote for the GOP nominee in lock step. So am I to believe that you think Governor Romney will appeal to more independent voters than Rep. Paul? With all due respect, I’m not sure I can swallow that premise. It’s not consistent with the conversations that I have with Independents.
I personally think the “RP can’t win” mantra is cooked up by the establishment of the GOP to scare folks into accepting another sham for a Presidential candidate. The last three they gave us were absolutely miserable when you view them in the context of history. Reagan, Bush I and Bush II; big government overspenders all! The two others they gave us in the elections the R’s lost, Dole and McCain, were just as lame as the three that won. I will not accept that best we Americans have available to us is Governor Romney.
Posted on July 8, 2012 at 2:46pmBehindBlueEyes, First, I did not see in my post that you replied to anything that was demeaning in anyway, except maybe the sheeple word, but that is just an expression and is no different than Paulbot, or any of the other terms that Paul supporters are called. I am consistently called a lefty, commie, idiot, nuts, the list goes on and on. All I try to do is to show everyone what should be right in front of their face. I think that most people do not want to believe that both parties are the same, because when they finally realize it, they understand that they have been living a political lie. Romney is not much different than Obama, so why is everyone so willing to hold their nose (as they say) to vote for a candidate that will not do much of anything different?
Report Post »You say you do not like Pauls foreign policy. I say you do not understand his foreign policy and are just going by what the establishment reporters have said. His foreign policy actually gives us a stronger defense and cuts the military budget on things that are just a waste and sends our money to our enemies. His stand on Isreal is the best for Isreal, but you are told it is bad, because it is not the best for the military industrial complex. It would devestate the establishments ability to divert taxpayer money to their different factions. His foreign policy is a big part of his economic policy.
In answer to your question, Paul supporters are just fervent for liberty and cannot believe that so many do not see it
The SCOTUS has been wrong before and they were wrong once again. Romney does not even have a set to say that. Why?
The progressives and RINO’s have pushed Romney on us and this is what they get. Just because he ran a successful business does not matter to me. Look at how big business runs this country today and he is part of that crowd. If you think things will change you are delusional.
Nice job Republican fools, voting for Mitt Romney because way back in 2009 he was declared our frontrunner and many of you just vote how you’re told to vote, even if it means voting for the father of Obamacare. And it’s the Paul supporters who are kooks and freaks….riiiiight.
We can also lay much blame at the feet of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Fox News and the rest of the Republican establishment for ignoring the only liberty candidate in the race when they could have torpedoed Romney by getting behind Paul. They chose militarism, government-run health care, and skyrocketing debt over liberty and fiscal responsibility. Maybe it’s time for mainstream Republicans to turn off talk radio and check out real patriots like Judge Napolitano and Peter Schiff on youtube, facebook, twitter, wherever. They are the warriors for the Constitution and liberty. Rush and friends are for big government as long as it’s run by Republicans. They’ve perverted the meaning of conservatism just like the left has perverted the meaning of liberal.
Yeah ur kinda getting the message wrong. I supported Ron Paul in 08 and would support him in 2012 but the reality is he just isn’t capable of winning not to mention he didn’t win the primary – so though it may be difficult for you you have to let Ron go. Too many times has he rambled on jumping from topic to topic during the debates – sometimes to the point of incoherency. If he was just a little more refined and dare I say it a little taller he might have a chance. Now before you laugh please note that most voted for Obamie not because he’s qualified to be president –– he got the job in part because of the color of his skin (he reminds most middle class white 20 somethings of Jay Z or Usher) and because his campaign team did a great job of blaming the past administration (not to mention the MSM ignored of all his radical associations). So don’t tell me that appearance/perception are not important – you have to remember who we are dealing with – the American people whos priorities are a little backwards (who is getting picked in the draft is more important than who is sitting in the White house).
Maybe Romney is a little more progressive than we would like, but he is our candidate. Its him or Obamie and we know what we are getting with Obamie more lies and deception so if they are same as you indicate then my vote is for Romney. Posted on July 7, 2012 at 4:48pmVal, I now better understand your points. They are well taken and well presented.
I’ve been a Paul_bot (and proud of it) since the ’80s, so yes, it’s hard to let go. It’s not hard because I love Ron Paul so deeply. It’s hard because I love our Republic, our Constitution, my family and God so deeply and I‘m tired of the R’s and the D’s making a mockery of our Constitution. And this is RP’s last shot. A shame because I believe he would have been better than any President we’ve had in the last 30+years that I’ve enjoyed the privilege to vote.
Frankly, it may be a bit of age catching up with me as well. I may be lucky enough to be around for another 4 or 5 Presidential Elections so there isn’t much time left for me to see the back of the two party system broken. I would like to know that it’s still possible for an “outsider”, a true maverick (not Johnny McC style), to mount a campaign and win the Presidency. In other words, that we are still are a free country where anyone can become POTUS.
All of your points about appearance, skin color, voice quality, etc I believe to be correct. In my mind that’s unfortunate but it is the way it is. Voters expect their President to appear and speak in a certain manner. And Romney looks like the perfect Hollywood typecast for a President. Ron Paul looks like a country veterinarian, and has a squeaky, nasal voice. It’s a shame those things matter to people ahead of ideas, but I admit that you are right.
My point (first sentence) was, “Our Republic was founded on dissent.” Laughing at the opinions of others and calling them misguided malcontents, whining miscreants, neo-Nazi’s, anti-Semites and paranoid and conspiracy nutjobs isn’t very productive dissent. That was my point. It hasn’t a thing to do with how smart I think you may, or not not, be.
To your reply, I am glad that Governor Romney would support Rep. Paul if by some very strange twist Rep. Paul is able to secure the nomination. I’m also glad that Sen. Paul is supporting Gov. Romney. I’m equally glad that you would support Rep. Paul if he won the nomination. I love freedom. But all that tells me is that Gov. Romney, Sen. Paul and you are capable of group think. I don’t say that in a pejorative way. I understand the safety in numbers and electability arguments. However while I understand them, I also reject them.
I have, and always will, vote for the candidate that I believe will carry out the executive duties of the POTUS in a manner that will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the US. I use no other relative criteria such as, “X is the most electable”. If you believe that the candidate most likely to protect and defend the Constitution is Gov. Romney then God bless you. In my mind that answer to that question is another question. What is the reason for the debate? If the reason is to “be the smartest person in the room”, and degrading language is necessary to accomplish that end, then I suppose it’s warranted. If, however, the reason for the debate is to determine a best direction for the country then all the vitriol accomplishes is to detract from the debate.
I never said in any of my posts to you that you were wrong . Nor did I at any point accuse you of lying. I said I disagreed with some of your points and perspectives. As to the “truth” question; every side can produce tons of material to support their convictions. With technology what it is today, that is a very simple thing to do. I certainly hope so, I will be adamant about following federal law (42 USC 1971) when I cast my first round vote in Tampa. Anyone that tries to stop me, I will file charges against them. Federal law trumps state law and party rules. I know that many Paul supporters are going to follow this line, and we may see a convention that will be one big fight with many GOP establishment types having federal charges against them in the end. I am very familiar with Time. He’s a straight up R ideologue. And like most ideologues, of any ilk, when the facts don‘t fit they twist ’em. Or they attack on some other point in an attempt to deflect the conversation. Or, and I think this is their favorite, they call names. I guess I was bored that day and just wanted to have some fun poking at him.
I hope the Tampa convention turns out nominating RP. I am not as confident as you are, but it appears you are a bit more “on the inside” than I am. Good Luck, and give ‘em hell. I hope when I see after the convention you can smack me upside the head with a big fat (good natured of course) “I told you so”. Peace.
Report Post »You and I know the media has lied from the beginning about the race and the GOP election fraud. It is going to come out. The delegates ARE unbound by federal law, the delegates are protected by the same federal law, there are more Paul supporters than anyone realizes as delegates. It is going to be a kick-A$$ convention.
Posted on July 6, 2012 at 10:43pmShe cannot win. The left tainted her and Palin is saddled with a ding bat daughter who is making money off her mother’s name. Bristol drags her mother’s name down.
Posted on July 7, 2012 at 12:01amIf Palin entered the race now, she would win the nomination.
There is a sense of doom at the fecklessness of the Romney campaign,
he might be worse than McCain.
He will only win on obummers weakness.
Posted on July 7, 2012 at 4:14amForget Palin as she didn’t run because she appeals to only far right voters & knew she couldn’t get the nomination. She would have ran if she felt otherwise. Reagan was behind Carter at this time. I would prefer if Mitt would start attacking Obama because he does have it in him as we have seen in the FL debate. I do think they decided to wait a little bit & will be attacking him but don’t want to do it too early. He has raised loads of money so the ads will be coming. Although I like Kraut, Kristol doesn‘t Romney so I don’t pay much attention to what he says.
