Dog Killers Convicted For Murdering Navy SEAL Hero’s Beloved Companion

Marcus Luttrell, a highly decorated Navy Seal and author of “Lone Survivor,” is still hurting three years after the murder of his beloved Yellow Labrador, DASY, by a group of thugs in Texas.

Today, Luttrell has received some measure of closure, as two of the perpetrators who shot and killed his beloved companion have been sentenced to prison time.

Killers Convicted in Murder of Marcus Luttrells Dog

Luttrell, a true American hero who was the lone survivor from his fire team after an insurgent attack in Afghanistan, took the stand Thursday in the “cruelty to non-livestock animals trial” of Alfonso Hernandez, one of the two accused in the case.

Hernandez was found guilty of a state felony by a Walker County jury.

Marcus Luttrell

Another suspect, Michael Edmonds, pleaded guilty to the same state charge two days prior and admitted he was the one who fired the shot that killed DASY.

The night of the killing in April of 2009, Luttrell said he “heard a single gunshot, grabbed his pistol and ran next door to his mother’s residence to check on her. He then made his way down to the roadway, crawled underneath a fence and saw DASY had been shot.”

“I saw my dog in a ditch and two men standing outside the car,” Luttrell said, with his new service dog by his side on the stand. “I could hear them laughing.”

Law enforcement officers eventually caught up to the car with Luttrell’s help.

“I wanted to take a shot at the driver, but I figured if I missed and shot out the back window, I would not be able to catch them,” he added.

DASY given to Luttrell by friends to help him cope with the emotional and physical injuries he sustained while fighting in both the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters as a Navy Seal. She was by his side in Texas for four years.

Her name is an acronym of the initials of Luttrell’s team members who were killed in the firefight he described in “Lone Survivor.”

Edmonds and Hernandez, who was charged as an accomplice, will have to wait for a pre-sentence investigation to be conducted before a punishment is handed down, which is expected to take place in February, according to the Huntsville Item.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of up to two years in a state facility and a $10,000 fine.

Here is a clip from 2009 in which Glenn Beck interviews Luttrell, who tells the story of his beloved canine companion’s murder, including his gut-wrenching statement that “I consider that dog like a daughter to me:”

As another dog lover, that story of Marcus’s chase of those dog killers was beyond believe, when Glenn told it and played the 911 tapes etc.
I wonder why it took so long to get justice for Dasy.
It’s not like there was any question of what they had done. It’s too bad Marcus didn’t catch them before the law got them stopped. I’m sure he would have provided a little justice of his own, and very well deserved.

This article does not give the actual sentence, to bad. It seems killing dogs is going out of fashion since Vick was sent away, but now he’s an adored hero for throwing a football around for millions each year. I will never forget or forgive Vick.

      Sir,

You may want to re-think your lack of forgiveness here of Michael Vick, especially since we’re talking about animals (though I’m a big dog lover myself) and not even people who were harmed AND since Michael Vick asked for forgiveness.

In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus says that if you refuse to forgive someone of their trespasses (i.e., offenses, crimes), God the Father will not forgive you. God wants us to forgive everyone because we ourselves have been forgiven of so much more in comparison.

I hope that your words were more for effect than written with genuine unforgiveness. It’s an eternally dangerous thing not to forgive others for their sins.

My Dad and I went to see Mr. Markus Lutrell speak in a small town in Texas a few months after Dasy was shot. This is one giant of a man. He must stand 6 ft 4. When he came on the stage, the first thing he said to the audience was too ask that everyone turn off their Cell phones.

Then he looked around the room staring in to everyone eyes for a few seconds, and said “Don’t Make Me Ask You A Second Time.” Instantly at that point everyone in the room was shuffling about turning off their cell phones. I even heard a few “Yes Sir” coming from the audience.

Truly a Great American Hero – God Bless Marcus Lutrell. These punks messed with the wrong man.

Where in the Bible does God forgive anyone that doesn’t ask forgivness first? I, for one, refuse to forgive those that are unrepentant. I don’t hold myself to a differant standard, and pretend it is a higher standard, than that which God holds himself.

      Yo Seeker of Truth:
Since we seem to be about the same thing….God forgives you and me of many things that we do in a day that we many not even be aware of…. I do not believe that forgiveness is only at the request of the offender, we are told to pray for those that persecute us, scripture says that Jesus died for us while we were still yet sinners, there are many places where the Word says we are to love and forgive no matter what…. and that is truth… according to scripture…. peace

Actually, it’s probably a good thing Marcus did not get them first, because then Texas would be put on the spot of trying a Navy SEAL war hero for murder, instead of two thugs for animal cruelty. I feel for the man, I really do, but having him in jail would do nobody any good. The thugs are not getting what they deserve, but it’s better than the alternative, I guess.

Here’s my take on the Michael Vick issue – he didn’t stop killing dogs because he chose to, or that he realized what he was doing was wrong, it was because he got caught. An apology from a man like that holds zero weight with me. His was not a crime of passion, a stupid one-time decision, or even a case of him being drunk/high or something else that clouded his judgement. Soemone apologizing for doing something out-of-character is one thing, as we all make bad choices from time to time (some mistakes obviously much more serious than others), but Vick knew all along what he was doing and continued to participate.

The only issue I have here is that to possibly condemn another man to hell for all eternity, for shooting my dog, no matter how much I love it, is just to high a price to pay for an animal’s life. People get emotional with their pets, I am so happy things worked out exactly like this and justice has been served. Knowing what he was going through at the time, it is surprising he didn’t take that shot, but it would have been even more tragic. I read his book and he is indeed a true American hero.

@ SEEKER OF TRUTH, “…forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us…” Matt 6:12, is kinda the biggest verse relating directly to your first question. Also with respect to your claim that he isn’t repentant, not gonna lie, it’s seems pretty likely that a is true statement. However, St. Paul talks about judging the heart of others in the beginning of 1 Cor. 4 and ends up saying, “My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes.” Not that you can’t judge his outward actions and say to him that his actions were sinful (not being a steward of the earth) and that he doesn’t outwardly seem or act repentant, you just need to keep in mind that you are not, and will not be the judge of his soul. It‘s not that you’re holding yourself to a higher standard than God, it’s the fact that we, as humans, do not posses God’s ability to either see the hearts of man or to know if God has also forgiven someone.

Josiah914 – Did Vick ask for forgiveness before or after he did the interview where he implied that his actions were not only OK, but certainly, to be expected? After all, in his own words, they were “just trying to make some money” and “what’s the big deal?”… Sorry, but that doesnt sound like a man who feels he even NEEDS forgiving, much less a man who desires it. And, do you think he consulted the bible before he committed his crimes? I’m sure since they were “just animals” you dont think his crimes were all that bad, but it is for precisely that reason that I DO think they were horrible crimes. Animals, defenseless, loyal to a fault and would lay down their lives for their master, were tortured and murdered… for what? So our multi million dollar ball tosser could make a few bucks? Get a few laughs? And then try to justify his monstrous acts? Forgive him? I think not.

I don’t think anyone that believes in God should make such a ridiculous statement; hero or not. God put man above animals and procreation is a gift. Now that I think about it, I don’t even think anyone that believes in evolution should make such a thoughtless statement either.

Seekeroftruth – first of all, it is not our job to forgive every single person who commits a sin. It is not your job to stand in judgement of everyone who sins and hand out forgiveness as you deem just. These men who killed that dog have nothing to do with you personally, so you have no need to forgive them. Forgiveness in this scenario would be between those men and God, and between Marcus and those men. They hurt Marcus; therefore he would be the one to forgive.

Secondly, I think you misunderstand what God did. He didn’t send Jesus to the earth to suffer, die, and rise again, to offer forgiveness only to those who ask for it. He provides forgiveness to EVERY SINGLE PERSON; it’s just that a person has to accept that freely given forgiveness. The bible talks about receiving forgiveness. It’s up to us to receive the available forgiveness.

@SEEKEROFTRUTH ..We must ask for forgiveness (and turn away form) of sins from God in Jesus’ name..because He died for us sinners and He had no sin of His own..He paid the price for us…When he looked out onto the mocking jeering crowd who was calling for His death..He said “Father forgive them..for they know not what they do.” God says to love our enemies and to do good to those that persecute us. It has been proven that serial killers and others who commit heinous crimes have cruelty in their hearts toward animals..In some famous cases…the people convicted were raised in good Christian families..and for some reason..they chose God’s enemy…but God does say that many are called but few are chosen..How sad for ones who won’t be chosen.

I view the Mike Vic thing a little different than most.

I find it funny that in the days of PC rules, where you are not allowed to say much of anything that would offend the African American crowd (to include speaking real about vile rap music, the ammount of black Americans in prison, having abortions, their crime stats, numbers on welfare…) it is fine to hate Mike Vik for his dog fighting.

Here is a little dose of reality. dog fighing is part of black culture in the south. It has been for many years. I am aginst dog fighting, but I do not see it as any worse than many other non legal activities that we turn a blind eye too. In Italy and Japan, dog fighting is a legal sport that the rich folks attend.

We live in a nation, where you folks do not say a peep about violent rap music that degrades women, glorifies the pimp, promotes crime, selling drugs, violence against police…. but becuase of the years of influence of the bambi syndrom (false idea that animals have human emotions), Mike Vik is an American enemy.

Let us not forget that the same time when Mike was going through the courts, R Kelly (rapper) was also in court for uninating on minors and having sex with them. He walked out not guilty (there were films of him doing his crimes), and there was never an outcry from Americans. So basically, we live in a nation where it is fine to urinate on and molest our daughters, as long as you do not mess with the family dog. This is a sick nation.

There is a lot of bad theology and poor understanding of law here too.

Forgiveness is a requirement of us regardless of whether someone asks. First of all, what sin did Vick do to you by killing dogs? His offense was against God. What right have you not to forgive him? The Bible is clear, if you cannot forgive others who have wronged only a little, how can God forgive you for having wronged him a lot?

Secondly, these thugs DID NOT MURDER the dog. Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being. Just because a valiant war hero loved the dog does not make the dog human.

While what Vick did was awful, he served his time according to the law. He has paid his debt and forgiveness should be given, but to be honest our forgivness is not required. He did not do anything wrong to us. So unless he has wronged you, then quite frankly we can’t forgive him. It would be nice howerver if pediphiles and others got the treatement that Vick got over killing dogs, beucase to be honest there is not comparison.

You sort of proved my point about logic with your responses. Who said I assumed you were not a believer? I assumed nothing. I stated that it is illogical and insulating.

      However, you assumed some things:
      1. Calm down? Who is not calm?

      2. Condemn you? Who said it was a salvation issue? I stated there is a hierarchy and I think such references are insulting. You don’t have to agree. I am simply stating that if it is okay for you to insult me with such references than it is okay for you to hear how vile I think that is. Fair enough?

      3. Hell? You might be assuming that I view hell as anything more that Greek/pagan mythology twisted from something as simple as the grave.

      4. Do I now understand your point of view? I always did. I don’t have a problem with your fondness for your dog. I find your classification of your ‘child’, sickening.

As for you not being able to have children, you have my deepest sympathies. I thought that may be the case but did not want to assume such.

When Jesus died on the cross, he asked his Father to forgive them because they didn’t understand what they were doing (in killing Jesus, thinking it was the right thing to do). Those soldiers and Jews who persecuted, tortured, and finally hung Jesus on the cross, weren’t sorry either, but Christ forgave them and also asked His Father to, as well. I truly believe it infuriates God when we bless those who do evil to us, and He then (if they do not ask for forgiveness) removes His hand of protection (in other words, God turns around to face the other way) allowing that person to go their own way without divine intervention, allowing Satan to do whatever he wants. Don’t forget, if we want God to DO ANYTHING FOR US, WE MUST ASK. And, if Michael Vick did not ask, then he is not forgiven. However, God will ‘nudge’ him for awhile. If Michael doesn’t respond with heartfelt sorrow for what he has done, then God turns His back. God still loves Michael Vick, but remember, God does NOT force us to do anything we don’t want to do, including coming to God, asking for salvation, or anything else we might ask the Father. Besides, NO ONE, NOT EVEN THE POPE, CAN GET TO THE FATHER WITHOUT GOING THRU HIS SON JESUS ***FIRST***. This is why we should ASK AND PRAY TO THE FATHER, BUT END OUR PRAYERS WITH ‘In the name of Jesus Christ”.

Personally, I will not judge this man. His judgment will come from the Father

Josiah, that was very well put. It is easy to have anger and want to do your own justice when something so dispicable as the murder of DASY is. When staying focused on what God has ask of us the pain and anger subsides a little faster. We cannot depend on mans ways, such as the justice system, to implement what we think is the proper judgement and punishment for crimes. But, we should know that God will pronounce the exact payment of our sins. I hope Marcus will get another dog and name her the same. God bless. Have a Merry Christmas, all! P.S.-Everyone, please read Marcus’ book!

@Josiah…people have to ask and want forgiveness before you can forgive them. Nice preaching but we all have to pay for our sins. Jesus paid the ultimate price that we might have a chance at eternal life. With that said, Marcus is an American hero! He went through things which none of us could comprehend. The criminal punks need to get the maximum penalty . After they serve their time and if they are sorry, then we’ll consider forgiving them. Their main apology should be to our Creator though, and he’ll know if their genuine.

Um… how are you not being judgemental? Hypocrite. God’s dominion given in Genesis expired? Wow, that has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard a “christian” say.

Who said I was a christian and who said I agree with “jesus”?  I believe in THE Messiah, Yeshua, not in the image of the beast that you do.

If someone has the “right” to feel one way how do I not have the “right” to feel differently? Sounds like you are trying to take away liberty.  I think you are confusing judgement with logic.

Why are you upset about Mike Vic raising fighting dogs, but you were SILENT about RKelly sexually molesting and urinating on MINORS? Why do African American Celebrities get a PASS on every foul behavior here in America EXCEPT animal cruelty? Oh yeah, because the Ivy League Boomers in charge of America at the moment feel that we of the petit-bourgeosie class and lower DESERVE to be URINATED on by angry African American Celebrities BUT dogs don’t deserve it. Oh, one more point to make: If any of you BLAZERS had read in your LOCAL newspaper that one of your neighbors who happened to be an ex-enlisted Navy serviceman got into an “armed standoff” with some of HIS neighbors because they allegedly shot his dog, NONE OF YOU would be screaming bloody murder! You would, and let’s be HONEST now, just shrug and mutter “dumb @ss rednecks” and then assume that the Navy Veteran wasn’t upset about a dog at all but was in fact a RACIST when you read that one of the alleged shooters was named “HERNANDEZ” Remember, we are being HONEST now, NONE OF YOU would be this upset if that was how you had heard about this incident. You would not hail the ex-squid as a hero, you would PRAY that the redneck who “allegedly” had his dog shot won’t show up to your next TEA PARTY! But since THIS old Navy SEAL is PUBLISHED, well, that is a different matter, HE must be EDUCATED and not like any of the other enlisted Navy…

Many dogs have a way of making a person feel better just by their presence.
Labs have a very high ablitiy to be close to their masters and so much comfort especially to those that have experinced trama.
They become a part of the family at least to a normal person with a heart. The term the dog is like child to person does not mean they are or could take the place of a human. I resent the attack on Marcus and consider the blogers that have to be less than understanding.

For as wonderful as animals are, they are not anyone’s children. To treat them as children is a psychosis. One can have an affection for a pet but it leans towards insanity to treat them as if they are human.

To Josiah914: NO ONE should forgive Vick. He didn’t serve ONE MINUTE of time for animal cruelty. He got a plea deal and had it dropped. He only served time for financing illegal activities. When asked what he would do differently with his past, he responded “Get a shorter prison sentence”. Does that sound like a man who is sorry? NO. He has no regrets or remorse for what he did to those dogs.
Also, the bible is full of contradictions and hypocrisy. It shouldn’t be used as a reference any more than the story of Goldy Locks and The Three Bears.

Wow some people actually think two years in prison is good enough?! That goes to show that most of y‘all don’t know the truth about animal abuse. Most serial killers and people convicted of assault started out by torturing animals! If you live in a home where there is a dog and a spouse or a child is being abuse the animal is being abuse along with them but the abuse starts out with the animal first in most cases! Two years in prison is not enough! They need to be locked up a lot longer and be forced to go through psychiatric treatment! Also I hope that get beaten really bad in prison where they feel their lives are in danger because that is what they deserve! Yes humans are higher up but God doesn’t want us abusing his other creatures and killing them for no good reasons!

Also I would like to state my pets are my children! Personally I have no desire to have kids of my own (I’m a day care employee) because I don’t think it is right for me. But I have room for animals no matter what. After all I’m going to school to become a veterinarian because I believe God put me on this earth to care for animals!

No DAVEED. The new pup will not be a closure, but a new chapter in this man’s life. Anyone who has had the blessing of a wonderful dog in their life will never forget or be able to replace that lost family member. We lost our wonderful Golden-Lab seven years ago to cancer. We still grieve for her as she was a daughter to us. The same for our beautiful cat of 16 years, whom we lost 2 years ago due to old age (and a broken heart, I think, because she lost her beloved sister.) For those of us who open our hearts and homes to these wonderful animals, they are children to us and by us, they are given love, patience, care, and more love, as if they were a human child. This man lost one of his children. Getting another does not replace or close the hole in his life for the one lost. (no offense meant to you DAVEED. I just had to give my two-cents).

Brave? Redefines the word. Hero? Yup; in every way — in an arena where, curiously, ‘hero’ is watered down beyond recognition by assigning it to anyone who joins the service. Cut above? I’d hope for even one day in life that I could perform to the Marcus/SEAL incredibly high standard.

But the book is a greater blueprint of failure. For all of Petty Officer Luttrell’s impressive acccounts, nowhere is there an answering to his primary, first, and highest duty: to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic. In fact, 100% of the book’s events take place in an unconstitutional war. Moreover, to claim or even liberally infer that these SEAL actions in any way protected the Constitution from the foreign dangers they encounter is an untenable stretch.

For this reason, the GREAT, INCREDIBLE, SUPERHUMAN work of Lattrell and the Navy SEALS in the book — the sacrifice, the loss of life &c — was for nothing. Their first, primary, highest duty was left aside.

Agree with both of you. Anyone know their history and whether they are immigrants or 2nd or 3rd generation Americans? One of the many downsides of the flood of ILLEGAL immigrants is that they do not assimilate into the American society like most of our ancestors did. Instead they are importing their 3rd world customs into the U.S. And that covers a host of nationalities that have arrived or overstayed visas illegally. Many 2nd generation immigrants barely speak English, preferring to keep in their own language and start their micro-culture in the U.S. Ex-Governor Lamm’s speech of “How to Destroy America” is interesting to read, especially 10 years after the fact. I hope Marcus and his bride are at peace and enjoying their lives!

The lack of morality, compassion and loyalty brought to this nation from the misguided policies of the communist democrat party engaged in the destruction of this nation is disgusting and frightening. This story is part and parcel of the direction this country is being led in. Against Christ, and against all things that are morally correct.

Justice will be served. I believe dogs are angels God shares with us to help us through our difficult times on earth. The story of the way Marcus Lutrell lost Dazy to these sociopaths brought tears to my eyes when I first heard about it. I hope Marcus Lutrell has another service dog now. Our wonded warriors deserve better than to be met with violence here at home.

How can anyone shoot a dog just for the hell of it? I hope they get the max along with paying the $10,000 penalty. Maybe one day a pack of dogs can return the favor to these thugs.

Marcus may return the favor one day himself. I hope he does.

I hope life isn’t very nice for those guys in prison. It takes a horrible lowlife to kill innocents like dogs and children.

And let‘s hope he’s got a starving, rabid wild boar with him. You know, one that would LOVE to make himself familiar with the inner workings of these 2 vermin.

I have wondered about this story.
I would have not had the strength to hold back if I were Marcus.
    Bless you.

I wouldn’t have been able to hold back either. I’d have likely have emptied my magazine into them.

I believe this would of been the perfect chance to practice the 3S Theory

      Shoot
      Shovel
      Shut Up
